Imported AVI Being Cropped/Resized.  Why?

I'm importing an AVI into Premiere Pro 7.0.
When I play it in the project window, it looks fine.
When I move it to the timeline and play it in the sequence/monitor, it get's cropped or resized.
It doesn't matter if I have it zoomed to fit, 50%, 100%, or anything else.
I can't seem to find anything in the preferences (or anywhere) that will allow me to stop
it from doing this automatically.
Please help.
Thanks.

Take a look at this ARTICLE, as it will get you started on the right path with file formats, and also offer tips on getting all of the useful data from the files that you Import. Based on the above discussion, this will prove very useful to you, when establishing the settings for your Project.
You want your Project settings to match your Assets. You can alter things when you Export.

  • Avi being cropped on FCP6 timeline

    Hi,
I'm using FCP 6. I've imported an avi into the project and dragged it onto the timeline. It is cropping the bottom of the picture off. Does anyone know what the problem is? the sequence is set to DV-PAL anamorphic. The aspect ratio of the footage, I was told, is the same as the timeline.
If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it- the client wants this project imminently.
    Thanks.

Thanks a lot for your input Brian.
The frames size turns out to be 720x405.
My boss says that the client doesn't want it this afternoon after all so it's not quite as urgent. She's put me onto a different project so I can't do the conversion to quicktime yet. If the avi is cropped on the timeline, will it still be cropped if I convert it to quicktime, or will it adjust it?
    Cheers.

  • I'm trying to import avi files to FQP - why does it not work? I've tried DVX-converter and Perian without any luck.

I'm trying to import avi-files to FQP without any success. I'vw tried to convert it with quick-time and insalled Perian, with no luck. I'm new to FQP...

    FQP??
Never mind. Open one of your .avi files in QuickTime Player.
Press command and i keys to get the Inspector window.
Tell us what it says next to Format.
avi is just a container, we need to know the codec that was used to make them.

  • Imported PSD Files Are Being Erroneously Resized in Captivate 4

I am trying to import PSD files to use in my Captivate 4 project. I verified that the PSD image size is 800 x 600, and my Captivate project dimensions are the same 800 x 600. But when the import process completes, the layers are erroneously resized to smaller dimensions. I have tried the same thing on two separate installations of Captivate 4 on two separate PC's with the same results.
Here is a screenshot of the PSD file in Photoshop (image size = 800 x 600):
Now here is a screenshot of what the imported PSD file looks like in the Captivate project (screen size set to 800 x 600):
When I do the import, I'm selecting: File --> Import --> Photoshop File..., then I select the "As Layers" option, and do not check the box next to "Scale according to stage size" (I have tried using this option as well with the same results, although I don't believe I should have to rescale when the PSD image size and Captivate project size are the same.)
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for such a prompt reply...the single .psd file with many layers is imported using:
    Import Kind: Composition
Layer Options: Editable Layer Styles; Life Photoshop 3D (although there are no 3D layers in the .psd...so I'm unsure if this default is needed?)
Oh!!  Never mind...I just tried Import Kind: Composition -- Cropped Layers and the layers were not cropped...kind of counter-intuitive since I would have thought "Cropped Layers" would crop the layers rather than the other way around.
Thanks for your help...if you just reply to this post I'll mark your reply as the answer, thanks for suggesting the direction to look for a solution, cheers!

  • Why can't I import .AVI files?

I got the new iMovie and am not sure I like it over the older version. For once, it won't let me import .avi files. What's up with this?

For once, it won't let me import .avi files. What's up with this?
An AVI file like any MOV file will not import to iMovie '08 unless both the audio and video compression formats are "edit" compatible with iMovie '08 and the container does not contain any "extraneous" tracks such as a "Tween" track. iMovie '08 does not automatically perform conversion of files at the finder level as they import, supposedly assuming that whatever compression format you import is the one in which you wish to edit your files.
I got the new iMovie and am not sure I like it over the older version.
Many people feel the same way. Most use both HD and '08 to optimize their work flow depending on the project requirements. I am mainly interested in changes between the two and how this may affect future applications but rarely do any real "creative" editing projects in either.

  • Photos being automatically resized upon edit?

I just upgraded my 3G iPhone to a 4S and I am experiencing a the following when taking/editing photos...
    1) Take a photo
    2) Email it to myself and select "Full size".  This results in a 2.62MB 2448x3264 pixel image being sent.
    3) While still on the same photo, click the "Edit" button, then select "Auto Enhance", the "Save".
    4) Again email the photo to myseldf and again select "Full Size" when given the size options.  This results in a 880KB 1536x2048 pixel image being sent.
Why is IOS5 significantly resizing the image even after applying the simple "Auto Enhance" correction?
I've tested the same scenario with all of the editing tools (crop and red eye) and the same thing happens with all tools... the photo is substantailly resized (automatically) when saved after the edits are applied.
I couldn't or never edited photos on my 3G, so this is new to me and I am curious if this is as designed?  If so, I don't know why Apple would force the photo to be resized upon edit.

I finally got around to importing my photos to my iMac and I found that the imported photos were not resized.
Apparently the original photo files remain untouched and this issue occurs only when emailing the photo from the phone successive times (after a applying edits).
I'm still puzzled as to why this would occur so I've submitted feedback to Apple about it, but I am at least glad to discover that the original photo files are unaffected.

Hi there - Okay,,I'm a real Noob,,but I can't understand why I can't import .AVI files when apparently I should be able to. I have just purchased a Toshiba Camelio S20 and have taken some test movie shots and when I've tried to open them in iMovie or just open them in finder I get the following message
'The document “IMAG0002.AVI” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.'
The Quicktime player I'm using is Version 10 and I'm working with MacOS X V 10.6.4.
What am I doing wrong ?
    Pls help ?

  • Premiere has suddenly stopped importing avi/mp4 files

I am using Premiere Pro CS3 on a mac.
With no explanation, Premiere has decided it can't recognize files that it recognized fine a few weeks ago. I have projects that I've already finished and when I reopen them it says the media is offline. When I attempt to import .avi files I get either a "codec missing" message or an "unsupported compression in file" while an .mp4 gets me "unsupported format or damaged file"
while I have "fixed" the mp4 issue by changing the file extension to .mpg, I still cannot import any .avi files, which didn't use to be a problem. Also I didn't have to change the file extension on .mp4 files before, either.
I am extremely frustrated and have no idea why nothing works except using another program to turn the .avi files into DV format, which for some insane reason makes a 20 minute video 3.95 GB, which makes me think somehow I'm doing that wrong too.

    >That seems ridiculous
No, that would be trying to edit a delivery format
You are an artist - You paint on a canvas
It is a FLAT canvas where you may see and paint everything
That is similar to Premiere with a DV AVI type 2 file... it may see and paint (edit) everything
    1-Now, read here to see
Why NOT to try and edit an MPEG
Your canvas is now "fan folded" like the expanding part of an accordian You may now only see the edges of the folds - You may NOT see inside the folds You are now trying to paint a full picture based only on being able to see those edges
That is similar to Premiere with any variety of SD (StandardDef) file compressed into an MPEG (HD "HiDef" is different, with it's own set of issues and problems)
Do not be fooled by movie industry advertising into thinking that "DVD Quality Video" is suitable for EDITING... it is not... a DVD is for PLAYBACK only!

  • When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size?

When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size from canon 5d mark iii, in older versions I used to be able to import the files as larger images. It use to have a number of options for the images size. The option now is smaller than the maximum size used to be.

You know what - I'm sorry
I'd had a crazy long all-nighter session sorting out images for a client, then decided - when I should have simply gone to bed - to set up the new photoshop. At the very start I made a silly mistake, tried to sort it out then decided to call it a day, responding to your remarks with the problem still in my head but feeling more and more tired.
Responded again to your comment earlier with the problem still in my head but not in front of me on the screen - however with a fresh head I just turned it all on, opened up PS and today could instantly see what was going on - Oops!
Thank you for being patient with a sleep deprived photographer who must have been getting annoying yesterday
    I am officially embarrassed

  • 4:3 being cropped in Projects

    Hello,
I have a full frame ( 4:3 ) video on my hard drive, when I import it into iMovie it is being stretched into 16:9, but when I add it to a project iMovie '09 it is being cropped.
How do I get it into its correct aspect ratio?
    Cheers

I've struggled in general with aspect ratios, and I'm no expert - but seeing no other proposals here I'll venture out...
First - I'll presume the iMovie Project is set as 4x3 (sorry - have to ask).
I've an indirect thing you might try. I've found that various tools I use output video files with aspect ratios that iMovie of FCE treat as 16x9, even though the input and intent is 4x3. Recently, I was using JES Deinterlacer to deinterlace content, and found that its output was reliably treated as 4x3 by iMovie '09. In that case, I was using the "Export to Quicktime" setting, and choosing size as "NTSC 720x480 4:3.
Perhaps this tool properly "sets" the aspect ratio with the file and would meet your needs. JES does allow you to set the Project tab to "Bare" - meaning no processing, so perhaps there is a very low-intrusion way to use to tool to pass through your video and hopefully end up with video that is treated as 4x3.

  • All imported photos need cropping

I imported a large number of photos and everyone of them has a fine white line along one or two edges making it necessary for me to lightly crop each one...I imported nearly 3000 photos. Why did this happen...and does iPhoto have  a batch feature for edits?

Thanks for replying Larry. I am importing via direct USB connection and importing through iPhoto app, not just syncing with iTunes. My photo library is located on my Time Capsule. But I had this problem before I relocated the library to the time capsule actually.

  • Cropping/resizing image by pixel dimensions

I am trying to crop or resize an image that is originally 2,122 x 1,415 px | 7.1 x 4.7 in | 300 dpi. I am to crop/resize image to fit 756 x 275 px. However, I don't want to lose the whole image. I would like to use the whole image just adjust it to the dimensions.
How can I accomplish this without creating any distortion or by removing elements by cropping the image?

    Hello Slange,
may I propose a solution based on a more mathematical derivation, where I assume the height of 275 px is decisive. The way is the same, if the 765 px width is important.
The reduced copy of 2122 x 1415 provides 412 x 275. To the wished 756 you need: 756 - 412 = 344. Splitting it into two parts I'll get 344 : 2 = 172. These I mount now (The black borders are only for better overview.) to an image with the wished measures 756 x 275:
The white area you can fill it with any suitable color.

  • On my iPad I have got a lot of "other" memory being used (18gb) why? I can't see anything on there!

On my iPad I have got a lot of "other" memory being used (18gb) why? I can't see anything on there!

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Problems importing AVI files

Can someone give me some pointers on tricks/tips importing
AVI files? I imported a file that was 9 Meg, which resulted in a
published captivate project of 34 Meg.

    MikeCrockerMike said - quote:
    quote:
I am a bit dissappointed with the captivate folks that they did
not chime in with this solution in the beginning.
Mike, regards the lack of "chiming in" you mentioned,
unless you are talking about conversations you had privately with
Adobe Tech Support (see link at the bottom of every page), I think
you misunderstand the concept and use of these forums.
    There are
no "captivate folks" reading your posts in these forums!
All of us here are regular old users, just like you.
As a matter of fact, actual Adobe employees seldom read the
posts to this bulletin board for the simple reason that is it a
peer-to-peer support group ... and if you are disappointed in "us",
I don't know what to say, since "we" are unpaid volunteers who do
our best to provide free help, and being human, sometimes fail
    regardless of our best efforts.
I am glad you found a solution that works for you. This
option wasn't mentioned earlier (by me) because it will only work
for those who can afford the purchase of - and the time spent on
the learning curve for - Flash 8.
For those who are already Flash owners, there was no point in
mentioning it because for them, it would be stating the
    obvious.
    Have a nice day.
