Imported B&W NEF images appear as colour when opened!

Odd one here. Have searched the forum but while there are some B&W issues discussed, nothing matches this one.
OS X 10.6.4, iphoto '09 build (8.1.2). Camera Nikon D90 using NEF images. Camera set to take B&W. Camera is using Colour Profile Adobe RGB 1998.
Camera takes B&W photos. I can see this in the LCD viewer. I can also see B&W thumbnails of the images via Finder when looking directly into the SD card.
Then I open iPhoto, select the SD card and even iPhoto will display B&W thumbnails. So far so good.
Now I do the import into iPhoto, but then after the import is completed the thumbnail images display as colour images. Even when you open the image it displays in colour.
How can this be ?
Have not found anything specific to this particular issue on the 'net to date, Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks, I understand what you are saying.
The Nikon D90, has a Picture Control setting called Monochrome, This I thought, allows the shooter to take the picture in B&W, by doing an in-camera conversion from colour to B&W and stores the B&W image on the card. But then this doesn't explain why it opens in colour on OS X (??).
So more likely it as you say, the camera is taking and storing a colour image, but has a flag embedded in it to indicate it was 'shot' in B&W.
Oddly enough, under Windows XP using the free MS NEF viewer, the pictures do actually display in B&W ..thumbnails and when they are fully opened. I suspect then there is a bit or flag in the NEF processor in iPhoto 09 is not recognising and therefore shows the colour version. Does this make sense ?

  • TIF images scrambled and error when opening NEF file

    Hello,
Not sure what happened, but when I open .tif images in CS5 the display screambled.
When I open the NEF image adn hen press the Open Imge button in Camera Raw 6.6 dialog, sometimes I get the following error message and other times the image opens but it also scrambled like the image above.
Is this Camera Raw issue? I have 6.6 which is the latest.
The NEF and TIF images display correctly in Lightroom 3.5.
    Thanks

The issue was definatly with OpenGL. However, when I upgraded the driver the problem did not go away. Plus the there was no option to turn off OpenGL in the graphic card it self. What I did is, I opened Preferences -> Performance in Photoshop and unchecked Enable OpenGL Drawings box which located above the "Advance Settings" button. After that the images displayed correctly.

Upgraded from LR4 to LR5.7. Apparently successful download on iMac27" 5K running OS X10.2. Collections that were clear in LR4 appear badly blurred when opened in LR5.7.  What's wrong?

    Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions.
John: I back up the catalogue (and optimize/check its integrity) every time I quit Lightroom - which is why excluding it from Time Machine isn't the end of the world. I did rename the catalogue early on in my troubleshooting process - as you say, I didn't like the fact I felt out of control of it.
I tried synchronizing a folder that had some flags: when I'd done there were three flags in the folder. (I have unclicked - and clicked and then unclicked - the 'unsaved metadata' checkbox in View Options: as I say, Lightroom shouldn't be displaying these flags at all.)
Rob: Thanks for understanding why I'm fretting! I've checked my XMP sidecars, as you suggest, and they have read and write privileges. I then checked the last-modified date on the XMPs that came up with flags after I'd synchronized that folder. One of them displayed the time I'd just synchronized the folder (it's one I haven't worked on apart from applying a blanket preset in LR2, and then a blanket update to PV2012 in LR4, as I've done to all the images I haven't yet worked on individually); the other two showed the time (I presume) I worked on them yesterday. I selected these three and applied command-S: they then showed, correctly, that they'd been modified a minute before. So far, that folder's now flag-free. (As I said in my original post, the flags sometimes do seem to vanish if I save enough times - and they're unpredictable, not necessarily appearing on the same images in a collection or folder as before I do I group save/clear conflict.)
Mollysnoot: I don't see how the Mac OS would be doing this (although who knows - I'm not a software expert). I don't have any other programs open that can modify images. And since these flags can reappear instantly when I've dealt with the conflict - before I've had time to take a breath, even - I don't think they represent any actual modifications.

  • Hello. I have a new Computer and import my mediathek with an externe storage. When opened the new Mediethek in front of every song there is a explanation mark: original song could not been found. I try everything. Whats the Problem??

Hello. I have a new Computer and import my mediathek with an externe storage. When opened the new Mediethek in front of every song there is a explanation mark: original song could not been found. I try everything. Whats the Problem??

But it seems the OP has a setup where the media is on the external drive, and the library files are on the internal. This is what I refer to as a split library, Migrating such from one computer to another is not straightforward. Often iTunes will have some definite idea about where the files should live, and updating the setting of the media folder won't change that. If it requires a drive letter change that is usually not too hard, but sometimes there is another preference file that needs tweaking to indicate which of the old & new layouts for the library is being used. In more extreme cases I have a script for automatically making track by track repairs.

  • Logo image in titles disappear when open project on other PC

    Hi You all!
Got a problem with Premiere Pro CS5 regarding titles. We´re a group of people who uses the same CS5-project file as a template (write protected) from a server out on different computers.
For each new project we open the template-project from the server and do a "save as" before we start editing on our own PC.
The problem occurs with our titles in this template-project. We have a pretty straightforward title with a background and text created in the title editor. Then we also  import a logo in png-format in the title editor. This works great when we open the project on the same computer as its made on. But when someone opens the project on another computer from the server the image is gone and there's a "Logo" text where the logoimage was. To get the image back we ned to open the title in the editor, klick on the "logo" and the smal square in the tools to the right and browse the image file.
This is hard unecessary work to do when we do changes etc in the template project.
Hope there is some way to get the logo image to stay in the title when the project is used on other PC:s.
Hope I have managed to explain the issue ok. Thanks for any help with this.

    You explained it well enough.
But in my experience, you will have to redo the logo every time you switch computers.  I don't know why PP keeps losing that link, but it does.
The better option would be to create the title in Photoshop, including the logo, and bring that into the template project instead of using a PP title.

  • Imported images shift in colour when clicking on preview...?

I import my files from the cf card, as I've always done. The thumb looks fine but when I click on it and the preview is generated, it shifts in colour. And I can't shift it back to where I want it to be.
This seems to have started up suddenly. I have not made any updates nor have a changed my settings.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks
    mb

Have you changed the settings on your camera(s)?  People usually report this when they see the JPG preview, created by the camera, and then see the converted-from-RAW Image created by Aperture.  The only camera settings that effect the RAW file are for the exposure (aperture, exposure duration, ISO, exposure compensation).
It might also be caused by updating Aperture or your OS to a version that includes a newer version of Apple's RAW converter.  Any recent updates?  What version of Aperture?  Is 10.7.5 correct?
Can you describe the color change?

  • Image background changes colour when exported

    Hi there,
I have placed a jpg image (also tried it as a bmp) onto my report... The section background is white... The image background is white.
When the report is run, everything appears fine... HOWEVER, when the report is exported to PDF, the image background is slightly tinted (ie RGB 255, 255, 255 to 251, 254, 253).
I've tried the Report Options / Retain original image colour depth and Export Registry Settings options listed in other posts but still get the same results.
Does anyone have any ideas so I can hopefully this customer off my back.
    Cheers,
    Mat

When you zoom in PDF file the color depth decreases. In report level make it in large size and try to export it.

  • Why do my images appear washed out when I use Save for Web?

Q: The color/brightness/tone of my image changes when I use
    Save for Web. Why?
A: Photoshop is a color-managed application. The Web is not. Normally, when you view an image in
    Save for Web or
ImageReady you are viewing it without color management and see it how it will appear when uploaded to the Web.
To minimize changes, Convert your image to sRGB (i.e from
    Edit menu choose
    Convert to Profile )before using
Save for Web. You should also make sure that
Save for Web has been configured so that images are displayed using the document color profile (see attached screenshot for guidance).
You should also ensure that your monitor properly calibrated and the gamma is set to 2.2.

Same here. Didn't get any good New Years Eve photos indoors.

  • My RAW images are becoming corrupt when opening with Adobe Bridge, showing very bright colours.

Windows Vista, Canon 20d, Dell PC.
Happens to older images not new ones.
Have a raw thumbnail codex installed.
    Any help much apreciated
    Example attached.
It isn't happening to all images though:

The raw codec doesn't affect Bridge/ACR, only Windows Explorer and applications which use the codec, like Photo Gallery.
The corruption you show is pretty extreme. It's usually the sort of thing you get with a corrupt display profile (Bridge is fully colour-managed), but if that was the case, I would expect it to happen with all of your photos, not just some.
You show the Preview panel is corrupted, but what about full-screen and Camera Raw previews?
What happens if you reset an image to camera raw defaults, with bog-standard settings and an Adobe Camera Profile?
The only other obvious problem I can think of is graphics drivers.
Which versions of Bridge and Camera Raw are you using?

  • CS4 Fireworks Image appears split up when viewed in IE, FireFox or inserted into Dreamweaver

I am working on my job's webiste (and I'm not a web developer) and I created this menu using fireworks here is how it appears in fireworks:
However when I view it in IE, FireFox or try inserting it on to a page in Dream wever it looks like this:
I have have played around with the different file types to save it as and nothing seems to work. Can someone please help me out?

When you export as HTML, you get a rigid table, but all your images are different widths. To produce this result, Fireworks has to make a very complex table. It's like making a jigsaw puzzle out of rectangular bits. Fireworks is not really a code-writing program and the table code required to emulate what you have would make me tear my hair out if I had to do it. Hardly anything lines up!
So... Make all your slices the same width. Or, if you really have to, pull two or three guidelines in from the ruler on the left (and also horizontal guidelines down from the top to separate your images vertically). Then, draw your slices over whole areas defined by the guidelines. Then, when Fireworks creates the jigsaw puzzle, all the pieces have edges that align. The code is much simpler and is less likely to break.
The better way would be to not use Fireworks code at all, though. Create images just from the areas you need, make sure you have the same number of pixels above and below each unit of text. Then, in Dreamweaver, set a background color to match the background color of your images and then put them in using a div (or even a table). Dreamweaver is good for coding, Fireworks is not.

  • Element 7 image losing all colour when published on website

I created a background in elements 7 for my website. when i publish it, it shows up in full colour on the computer i designed it on but shows up grey and colourless on other computers, mac and PC. Any ideas why?

What format is the image, what web design program are you using, and how are you placing the image into it (drag/drop, code, etc.)? If you're coding, are you sure the source image is correctly placed in your folder structure and that it uploaded?
If this is a giant file in terms of KB/MB is it possible it's just too big and is taking a really long time to load?

  • Colour picker automatically changing to different colour when opening

I think I've only been having this problem since switching to CC 2014, but I can't be sure exactly when it started.
When I open the colour picker to change a colour of an object, the colour automatically jumps to a different colour. It's very disruptive because I have no way of telling what the original colour was when trying to make small changes. And it's not a small jump either: for example, the default black jumps automatically to C60M90 purple – every time! It doesn't only occur with the default colour but also after I've selected a shade myself –  it seems to only be happening with blacks and greys.
Any help would be appreciated, as it's driving me crazy. I've tried activating and deactivating the "Art work has default appearance" option as it was the only thing I could think of and have had problems with that acting strangely before. I can't think of what else I should try. If no one knows, I'll try trashing the preferences folder.
    Thanks in advance. Cheers.

    Sounds like a 2014 problem.
Check that you are woking in the correct color mode, look to the right of your filename in parenthesis. Then use the color palette (always in the same color mode) and let us know if that is working.
If not try to reset your illustrator preferences.

  • Images are automatically saturated when opened in PS

    Hi,
I've been using Photoshop for a while, and was recently bought CS5...  My problem is, everytime I either import a photo from my files or I copy an image offline, open a new file and then paste in the image, they come out highly saturated.
I've searched the PS forums and have seen it might be something to do with my monitor settings but I'm not particularly good with technical talk so I haven'tgot a clue what I should be looking for or what I should be changing.
    Thanks for your help!

The OP needed to be given a good reference on color management, not further confusion.
Gary's recommendations were right on, Lundberg.  But if you felt a more direct response would have been to provide a color-management reference, why not just provide one instead of complaining that others didn't provide one?  You raised gator's hackles a bit and you didn't really provide any help.
Floralfidelity, I'm afraid this may be one of those cases where you really ARE going to have to throw your arms wide and try very hard to embrace the technical.  It's near impossible to understand why things work the way they do without gaining a basic understanding of what color-management is and how it's implemented in the real world.
I don't personally have any good links to share with you, but a Google search for "introduction to color management" turns up a fair bit of reference material.  I only caution you to keep in mind that in this realm a fair number of folks who don't really know what they're doing themselves still try to tell others how to do things, so whenever you read articles keep in mind that no matter how pretty the printing the information may not actually be right.  Use your common sense to judge whether what you're reading fits with everything else you've learned.
When you finally do gain an understanding you'll wonder how you ever got things the right colors before.
