Imported from Mini DV tapes, now how do I backup footage onto DVD?

Before I start working on the 7 hours of footage I just imported into iMovie, I would like to back it up on DVD. How to?
Also, is there any method that will make the DVD readable from another app and possibly from another OS?
I notice all my footage is in user > Movies > iMovie Events and that the files contained therein end with the .dv extension.
Thank you in advance for your help.

YOu can easily do this with Toast. Just create a data DVD.
I think you can also do this in OSX, (but I have not tried it lately.)
Open a burn folder on your desktop (or anywhere). Drag your DV files into the burn folder. And burn your DVD from there. No need to use iDVD for this, as long as you understand that you are saving the Data files, not a file that is playable in a DVD player.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How can I import from a MiniDV tape and keep the clip order

A long time ago, I edited some MiniDV video together and recorded back out to a MiniDV tape using some older version of iMovie (ten years ago). I have latest version of iMovie (10.0.2) and have imported all of the edited video back into a new library. Unfortunately, the library is separating the video into separate clips and sorting them by the original timestamps of the original video (before editing). As a result, the clip are in a jumbled mess of an order.
Note that I am just importing the video from the MiniDV tapes so that I can export it as a Quicktime file. I really don't need the video to be split into clips at all. I would actually prefer to just import the entire video as one big clip.
Any idea how I can preserve the order of the

One thing that I have noticed is that Apples built-in camera is optimized for Face Time, so it sometimes captures at 30 frames per second, but if there is not a lot of motion in the frame, it might use 12 or 15 frames per second. So it has variable frame rates. This is great for FaceTime, but not so great if you are trying to keep the audio in sync.
The way to fix this is to use QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip to save the movie out with identical specs except to specify 30 frames per second (or 25 in a PAL country).
I wonder if you are running into a similar problem in QTPlayer. If it is making a variable frame rate movie, you could fix it by dragging the movie into MPEG Streamclip and exporting as the same kind of movie, but with a fixed 30 fps frame rate. MPEG Streamclip is free and quite useful for stuff like this.
    Just a thought.
Right now my QuickTime Player is hanging so I can't test to see if you could set the frame rate directly in QuickTime Player X.

    Hi
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box

    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)

    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.

I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Problem with create archive from mini-DV tape

I have a fairly large collection of homemade mini-DV tapes. They are getting a bit old and I would like to back them up to my computer as well as have easy access to the footage with FCP.
The tapes were made on a Sony TRV8 camcorder (either directly or as backups of older VHS tapes). I am using the same camcorder for playback.
The camera shows up as expected in FCP. My goal is to "Create Archive" on each tape. Here is where I ran into some problems.
My first tape ran about halfway through - around the 30 min mark and gave me a "end of tape" message. The footage was captured properly, but there is still half the tape to go. I tried a second time and only reached the 5 minute mark when the archiving ended with an "end of tape" message. I am on my third try as I type this and have made it to the 15 minute mark.
I thought to possibly create multiple archives, picking up where I left off. However, whenever I select "create archive" FCP insists on rewinding the tape to the start. This behavior differs from the Apple KB article which states archiving will start from the current position of the tape.
Adding to the problem is an issue of jittering playback.
When I playback using the camera controls of the "play" button in the import window, things are fine. When "Create Archive" handles the playback on its own, the pictures jumps as if it is on a trampoline. Sometimes I am able to hit "stop" and then "play" to get a normal playback - sometimes hitting stop stops the archive with an "end of tape" message.
Any ideas on what is going wrong or how to work around it? I have over 100 tapes to archive. If each tape requires numerous attempts to archive, this will never get done. I thought the archive process was supposed to import the entire tape?

The bit about archiving from the current tape position is from Apple:
"Final Cut Pro begins archiving from the current location on the tape."
From Final Cut Pro X: Create and manage camera archives
    Last updated 9.16.14
    Obviously, that is wrong.
The part about archiving ignoring timecode and just archiving the entire tape I have read in several online forum posts. Some I believe are in this forum. These same folks usually advise to use archive rather than import in a bad TC scenario. Again, it seems that wrong information.
I am now simply doing an "import" of a tape, which appears to be working as expected. Seems either the age of the tape and/or the playback device is causing less than perfect timecode. Lot's of stutters resulting in a single "scene" being imported as many separate clips. I understand what you mean by assembling when ready to edit, but this is not practical. It looks like some areas are broken down to clips of 1-2 seconds (some even less).
What a mess. I'm looking for a mini-DV player as I suspect my camcorder may be the culprit. Not easy to find one.
Seems I will have to assemble the multiple clips to recreate the original. I am hoping I can then output the assembled sequences to DV files to maintain the "original" quality of the import (which should be the same as the tape since it is all digital). I would then create some FCP libraries to organize and store the clips.
Was really hoping to simply do the camera archive thing. My tapes are all cataloged and organized. Having a number of archives which match each tape would have saved a lot of time and trouble.
--and thanks for the help. It's a bit frustrating trying to preserve old tapes, especially when things don't work how you expect. Any workarounds or ideas to get a library of raw files out of this mess is appreciated. IF I can get that far, I plan to back up to M-disc.

  • Fizzy, grainy, snowly picture on importing from mini DV

Okay can import my mini DV now.
But the quailty is really bad. I wait a better clear pic. Help

How old is the tape? How it was stored could mean a loss of signal from the tape it self. Snowy picture could be the recorded tape may have lost some of it magnetic signal and causing snow. You can also try cleaning the the camera with one of those cleaning tapes as well. If the tape was recorded with a different camera then the one you are importing I found that sometimes it does not play back correctly, with some loss of quality.

  • Advice on importing old mini dv tapes with timecode breaks

I've dug out mini DV tapes from storage which contain priceless (at least to me) family footage. Some of these tapes are close to 11 years old.
Before these tapes degrade and rot further, I'm trying to generate tape archive files on my hard drive using Final Cut Pro 10.1 from these old tapes.
The issue I'm having is with timecode breaks on some of the tapes. After a few minutes of an import, sometimes the video will go a little wonky and I'll get a timecode break and the import process aborts itself. When this happens, I'm forced to start the archive all over again from the beginning, as far as I can tell. If I get lucky, sometimes I'll get through the import after another try but other times the tape is so badly damaged that I can't get through the entire tape.
I believe there used to be a setting to tell Final Cut Pro to ignore these breaks. It now appears this setting is gone. Or am I missing something? If it's gone, is there some kind of workaround I can employ?
Otherwise, if Final Cut Pro isn't up to the task, can someone please recommend software that will help me convert my tapes to archives on my hard drive?
PS. I've used a head cleaning tape on my camera to limit the problem but it still happens with some of the tapes.

You need a DV device to be attached and recognized by your Mac.
    Open QTime X.
    File>New Movie Recording.
In the control bar click the small triangle.
A list of devices appears to record from.
Make the DV/camera selection and start capturing.
It's all manual start stop and very basic but does capture.

Panasonic MiniDV tape camcorder model NV GS 25 GC

I have MBP with Leopard OS.

Kindly suggest how to solve this problem. I need to transfer the MiniDV tape recorded data to iMovie08
    Thanks.
from a user new to MAC world.

    Try this.
This Camcorder has both USB and Firewire connections. Use the Firewire connection for importing into iMovie. You may need to acquire a firewire cable, but a firewire cable should have been included with your camera..
Camcorder must be plugged in (not on batteries).
    Open iMovie.
    Connect the Camcorder with Firewire.
Turn on Camcorder to Playback mode or PC mode (depends on camcorder)
    Camcorder should be recognized.
Import the video from within iMovie 08.
USB connections work on some camcorders (those that store video to SD cards). Those that use mini-DV tape should use firewire.

  • Can't find time code from original footage (captured from mini-DV tape)

Hi. I'm Old to mac, new to FCE, good at iMovieHD ('06). Just got FCE (4.0.1).
Imported some footage (a few random practice clips) from a mini-DV tape I shot, but I can only see the time coding for each clip, not where that clip begins and ends in terms of the entire one hour mini-DV tape.
My log is for the entire mini-DV. So this is a problem.
I suppose I could re-import the entire 60 minute mini-DV tape from the start, but shouldn't the time code be embedded into each frame?
    Help much appreciated.
