Imported jpeg photos with noise after unsharp mask in photoshop

Hallo, I have this problem with Aperture (last update version). I have some photos in RAW/NEF format, I use Camera Raw for the main adjustment and then I use unsharp mask in photoshop for get sharpening. Photos are saved in jpeg max quality and I import the Jpeg files in Aperture. When I view this photos, for a few seconds photo looks good and sharp (I see loading... indicator). Then photos become blurry and it present a huge noise. If I export one of this photos or I view in Iphoto or in mac Preview, photo is very good. The problem is INSIDE of Aperture. If I don't use unsharp mask (from photoshop), all is ok!!! I tried to import files directly in Iphoto and photos are good.
Thank you.

What your screenshots are showing, is exactly how the sharpening with "unsharp mask" is supposed to work. It emphasizes any variation of the luminance in the image, including the variance due to noise. The threshold parameter should be used to separate noise from the main edges in the photo. By setting this parameter to 0, you have disabled the noise suppression in this filter, and so the result is very noisy, most noticable in the darker regions of the image, where there are no real edges to be sharpened, only noise.  I'd recommend to set the threshold to a higher value, I usually use 10-20 or so.  My screenshot was computed with a threshold of 15.
But the big question is, why you are not seeing the noise in iPhoto or Preview. Have you pixel-peeped at 100 % in these apps? There must be some kind of filter applied that will reduce the noise that must be present.
Your second question: Why do the jpeg load first as bluury and then gradually become sharper? I only see this happen, when I save the jpegs with the option "Progressive"; this will encode the jpeg in scale-space - a pyramide of images at different resolution. When opening, Aperture will first load the coarse resolution as apreview, and the image will gradually become sharper.

Use iPhoto. What's the problem with iPhoto import? It's a two clicks job. Select your device and click import.

  • Importing new photos with Iphoto6 without importing duplicates

In IPhoto 5 when I imported from the Ultra II reader a dialogue box appeared allowing me to say don't import duplicates. With IPhoto 6 this box doesn't appear. Or can I make it appear by clicking on something?

    Manning:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It should give you that option. Try loading some known duplicates from the desktop and see if you get that message. Some would not get the message when coming direct from the camera but would when coming from the HD.
Be sure to repair disk permission (after every software install or update) and see if that will help. You can try downloading the iPhoto 6.0.5 updater (if you're at 6.0.5 or 6.0.4 already) and re-install it. If you're already at 6.0.5 then you need to go to the HD/Library/Receipts and delete the iPhoto_605.pkg file before running the installer. Again repair disk permissions afterward.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Cannot Import JPEG Photos

I recently photographed a family event with my Canon 5D Mark II using RAW and JPEG Large.  When I imported into LR 4 I expected to see the RAW photos and JPEG photos in the library.   The RAW files imported fine but the JPEG photos did not import at all.
Can anyone help me sort this out,
    Regards,
    Henry

But be aware that changing that setting is not retro-active, so those Jpegs that didn't import won't suddently appear. You'll need to either run the import again, or maybe a tad quicker would be to synchronise the folder.

  • Resolution of Imported jpegs, especially with text, is terrible.

I'm importing jpegs built @ 1280 x 720 pixels. In the viewer the text is crisp, but when it's put into the sequence, it loses all quality. I'm not sure what my sequence settings should be on. Under Sequence settings I've been using "DV NTSC 48 Khz Anamorphic" .I export using quicktime conversion using the "best" settings.
    Thanks

Not sure how or where to make that happen. To create a sequence that's 1280x720, would that be under easy setup's, "HDV-Apple intermediate codec 720p30?
I'll eventually be exporting video to be placed in an html document with a flash player.

  • Can't import jpeg photos into iPad

Can't figure out why some of my scanned jpeg photos can be imported into my iPad through iTunes and others can't. the message I get is "holiday.jpeg was not copied to the iPod because it cannot be played on this iPod." Any ideas?

I would recommend you try one tool called ipad magic:http://www.topdvdtoipad.com/dvd-to-ipad-mac.html

  • Photos with noise reduction filters applied shows too much noise in preview mode

The Noise Reduction filters do an impressive job in Lightroom, but the preview of photos when zoomed out is sometimes poor.
This becomes especially visible on photos with a high amount of noise reduction applied.
When zooming in to 1:1 I see that the noise reduction works as it should. Also when exporting the images the noise is removed as it should.
I wish the non-zoomed preview inside Lightroom was able to show the image with the noise reduction applied more correctly than in version 3.4.
    I'm using Lightroom 3.4 64-bit in Windows 7.
See samples of image with heavy noise reduction applied in 1:1 screen shot, and then a unzoomed screen shot of the same part of the image. As you can see the unzoomed preview contains much more noise than the zoomed image does.

I've had to encode with no noise reduction which is a shame, but have to get this DVD done.
Any ideas for the next one?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • I cannot import my photos with Preview and iOS 5. Help!

I've just update my iPhone 4 to iOS5 and now i can't import my pic with Preview on a Macbook Pro (OSX fully updated). Someone knows something or has had the same problem?

Some kinds of bugs has arrived with the new iOS. Neither can I import my photos to my IPad2 from my Sony digital camera anymore. That was no problem before with ios4. There seems to many "small" problem. Also the AirPlay used with the app "GarageBand" does not work anymore.

  • How do I import (lost) photos to Library after crash?

I am using iPhoto '11 on a Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5.
I imported some photos from my camera, then chose to delete the photos from the camera. A few minutes later, iPhoto crashed-- and lost the photos.
I used right-clicking on the iPhoto app to see Package Contents and found the photos buried in a folder.
How do I safely import them back into iPhoto? (Since they are buried in a hidden folder, the "Import" function probably won't apply.)
    Any advice appreciated.

Do not make any changes to the contents of the  library from the Finder.
    and lost the photos.
Don't they show in the Last Import smart album?  If they don't show in the Last Import smart album try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
If that fails to recover the photos continue with:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download the free version of iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I recently opened my photos with iphoto after uploading my old photos from my PC to finder.  Now that I have my photos in iphoto, is it ok to delete the albums of photos I have in finder?

I had a problem importing my photos to iphoto when i first started using my mac, so instead I just saved all my pictures in finder.  Now that I have all my photos in iphoto, I'm not sure if its ok to delete the photos i originally uploaded to finder.

Assuming that you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) then yes - everything imported is in iPhoto and the source photo can be deleted

  • Import jpeg photos unsharp

Want to create a video film consisting of HD video sequences and single photos (jpeg). When importing photos (high quality & resolution )those become unsharp. What i am doing wrong. Can someone help me? Many thansk in advance. Best regards heide

SInce you want an HD output file, I assume you've set your East Setup to one of the AIC presets: for example, 720p. What are your video clips…where they shot progressive or interlaced? You can verify that your settings match your video clips and are correct by hitting command 0.
You will probably need to render your stills after you edit them to the timeline. After render, they should appear sharp in the Canvass viewed at 100%.
    Good luck.

  • IPhoto won't import jpeg photos from camera

I've been using the same method to import photos from my camera to iPhoto '09 with no problem ever since we got this computer. All of the sudden, the photos will not import and the error message says the file format is unreadable. All photos have the name.jpg format.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Julie.
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches (I remove the whole folder. It will be re-generated upon restart.)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There will may be more than one. Remove them all.)
If the issue persists these jpeg files may be damaged. Try importing them using Image Capture found in Macintosh HD > Applications.
If Image Capture can import them you can then try to add them to iPhoto.
If you still get the same error message try opening the files with Preview by double-clicking on them. You can then go to File > Save As > Format > TIFF and add those files to iPhoto.
Consider using these best practice tips to avoid or minimize the impact of issues in the future:
_Ensure your camera has a full charge on the battery before you import (Or run off of AC if possible).
_Ensure the date and time on the camera are correct before importing.
_If you are using a media card reader and are getting regular failures, try using a different reader or the camera itself (The same is true about importing directly from the camera. Try a reader instead.)
_Plug the camera directly into the computer with a solid connection, no loose cables. Don't use a hub.
_Reformat the camera's media card using the camera itself between uses.
_Alternate between multiple media cards during photo shoots (trips, etc) so that if one card goes bad (they are just little bits of plastic after all) you don't lose the entire shoot.
    Hope that helps.

  • Apperture allows you to import two photos with the same name

I have two different Sony Cameras and Apperture has allowed me to import photos from both without a problem however after changing to 1.5 it will not allow me to back them up to an external drive because the drive thinks that the other one is open and that it is duplicated. For example the file name DSC2134 has been saved at different times with different cameras but if I try to back up to my exyternal drive it just hangs up my entire computer. I thought the backup was slow but after 24 hours it still had not moved and would not even allow me to force quit. I had to turn my mac off. If I move each photo one by one it will say that my second photo is a duplicate - even if I have renamed the second version. How do I batch rename? How do I rebuild my library?
I moved to Apperture to get out of all the problems with iphoto now I seem to be back at the begining.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Tiger

    Rhian,
Aperture stores everything in its index table with a master filename as a key. This key may be the incoming filename or a user designated name.
Images are imported into a Project, and OSX naming conventions demand that within a folder, names are unique. However, OS X allows multiple occurences of the same name in different folders. And so does Aperture.
When you exported, it sounds like you exported the dups to the same folder? It sounds like Aperture should have identified this error condition and presented a dialog box to ignore/replace .... obviously it didn't and I suggest that is a program defect.
To remove dups., sort on filename or date/time stamp and delete the offending image.
BTW, with multiple cameras available to us, it is quite reasonable to expect two distinctly unique images with the same name. Duplicating the name is not necessarily duplicating the image. So I am for Aperture allowing dups. - providing it also allows me to rename, which it does. At the image level, true dups. should show up at the date/time stamp level. That's why sorting on date/time is a useful tool.
