Imported mp3 files end up as "Unknown" tracks

I have a folder of mp3 files - all files have different names. When I import into iTunes all the files are given the track name "Unknown".
Ideally I'd like to import the folder and have the folder title as the Album Title and the different mp3 tracks given the correct track names without having to re-name them in iTunes.
How - without too much trouble (there's about 40 tracks in each folder).
JL

Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to retrieve the titles directly. Mp3 files have the capability to encode information such as song title, album title, artist, etc. But if that information isn't already encoded in the file, then there's nothing for iTunes to read. Unfortunately, it won't read the file titles as song titles. So, unless anyone has any other idea, you will have to type in the song info for each file.

    1) find an MP3 file on your file system (in Windows Explorer)
    2) Right click on it to get contextual menu
    3) Select Properties
    4) on the General Tab the text "opens with" appears - in your case it'll be windows Media Player
    5) Click Change
    6) Select ITunes
    7) Select Always for this type checkbox
    8) Now try double clicking on an MP3 file
    9) Does it start playing in ITunes?
    10) Check Itunes settings: Edit>Preferences>Advanced
    11) Are the checkboxes Keep Itunes folder organized and Copy to Itunes foler when adding selected? If not - read the manual to understand what those two settings do

  • I can't import mp3 files into iTunes

Just recently, I find that I can't drag/drop (or import) .mp3 files into iTunes (12.1.0.50).
I did confirm that the files aren't locked.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

No mp3 files from any source, including iTunes itself, or just some particular batch of mp3s files from some unspecified source?  It isn't unusual for some encoders to produce mp3s that are not compliant with iTunes.  You can try using the application MP3 Scan+Repair (http://triq.net/mac/mp3-validator-mac-os-x) to fix them but sometimes you have to re-encode them.  Try playing with Quicktime Player instead and report if it will play the files.
Oh, it also isn't unusual that files do not have labels built in.  They are adding to iTunes but not ending up where you expect them to be.

  • Import mp3 file to imovie

i cannot import mp3 files to imovie - i tried via itunes but the files do not show up and cannot be dragged. any suggestion? thank you

I have the same problem and read your response and cannot make any sense of it.
What is the "apps area of itunes"?
How about this? For some unknown reason, Apple requires your audio clips to be in itunes first , which is ridiculous.
And when you put them in, imovie won't recognize them. That is just bad design all the way around. Mine are in mp3 and something called m3a, and neither is recognized by this terribly designed program

  • I can't import MP3 files - why?

I'm new to iTunes, and am wondering why I can't permanently import MP3 files that are currently on a DVD into my iTunes library. (Right now, iTunes will only recognize the songs when the DVD is in the computer). Is there any way that I can permanently move them into my iTunes library, so that I can then download the songs to my iPod?
    Thanks!

    Hi Chris,
I'm sorry for all the questions, but when I previously tried to add the files from the DVD to iTunes library (using the File -> Add file (or Folder)command), it created new folders in my iTunes library for the files, but they were empty. So, when I tried to download everything from iTunes into my iPod, the iPod said that the songs "couldn't be found". That's why I was so upset --after spending two hours thinking that I was importing selected songs into my iTunes, I learned that I was really only creating empty folders for them...!

that's usually an mp3 setting problem.  open your mp3 in audio editing software and resave.

  • Help! can't import mp3 files

hello, everyone. I'm a new logic user and I met several problems when i first used logic 7.2.3.
One problem is that i cannot import mp3 files, when i do so, the logic tell me 'Permission was denied, probably due to insufficient access rights.' Another problems is that everytime i pressed the record button, there will always be 2 seconds to wait before the logic starting record, though the cursor is moving. Sometimes it is useful but sometimes i don't need time to wait. What can i do to cancel the wait time?
well, i am a foreigner and english is not my mother tongue, so maybe i cannot express myself clearly. Advanced thanks for you.

    Hi,
The reason your mp3 cannot be imported is the following:
The mp3 is locked, and does not allow the operation to happen.
    Try this:
    1. COPY the mp3 file onto your hard drive.
    2. in your finder, look up your mp3. press "apple+i" for the file info to be displayed.
    3. look at the bottom of the info pane that pops up, and CHANGE the permissions for everyone to "read+write"
    4. CLOSE the info pane, and then try to import the mp3 inot Logic. It should now import normally.
    Cheers

  • BUG: Unable to Import MP3 Files in Flash CS6

I am unable to import mp3 files of any kind in Flash CS6. Tried import to stage, import to library, Drag and Drop... no dice. Receiving a generic error message. Tried closing out and restarting, etc. - still not working.
    Anyone else having this issue?

    Yep that worked!
The "update" in the library would not update the content but the drag and drop worked fine.
Note: The path in the update dialog shows a relative path and after the drag and drop it shows an absolute path to the file
I also had an issue with the audio being changed from stream to event.

  • FAQ: Unable to import MP3 files in Flash Professional CS6

If you are unable to import mp3 files in Flash Professional CS6, ensure that you update QuickTime(7.7.1) and iTune(10.5.3.3) versions. This is necessary to import .mp3 files of bitrates higher than 192kbps.

  • Problems importing .mp3 files to itunes

I'm having problems importing .mp3 files to itunes, it's importing the song name tage with "artist - song title" when it should just be the song title?

    Chad,
Glad to hear that Steve's script was helpful.
As to the bug, I don't know.  The problem you report is not common.  Usually when iTunes displays artist-title in the Name field, it is either an untagged MP3 or a WAV file, but in those cases it does not correct itself when you give it a kick.  Between that and the non-refresh problem you report, I think there is something else going on besides a tagging issue.  At your convenience, you may want to reinstall the newest iTunes, and see if it helps.
    Anyway, enjoy the music!

  • Trouble Importing mp3 Files

    Hello:
I've installed iLife 06 over a week ago, and played around a little with Garageband 3. By the way, I'm running Panther (10.3.9) on a Powerbook G4 laptop.
I do a radio show, and so I usually record a two-hour show. For the heck of it, I wanted to kick the tires, as it were, with importing one of the files as a track. And no matter if it's a one-hour file or a two-hour one, it fails to import the tracks properly. Even though I can see the orange track on the timeline, the actual sound wave is only partial. For a two-hour show that I attempt to import, for instance, it routinely cuts off the wave at 1:06:xx (that's an hour and six minutes plus).
I'm baffled, because these are mp3 files that I'm working with, usually at 128 kbps or 192. Any help to get this resolved would be appreciated....thanks!

  • How do I import .mp3 files on a CD to .m4a files in iTunes?

I have several audio books that are .mp3 files on CDs. Since they are books, they work best in iTunes as .m4b files, which I can convert from .m4a, but when I import to iTunes, the files import as .mp3 files. There's lots of help to go from the .m4a to .mp3, but not the other direction - does any one have any suggestions? Thank you!

With iTunes 8.x you have the option to tell iTunes to treat any audio file as an audiobook, so there is no need to change format (avoiding the consequent loss of fidelity that would entail). Just drag the files from the CD into your music folders, then add to the library in the usual way. Chris has already explained how you set the *Media Kind* to Audiobook. On the same tab you can also set options to *Remember playback position* and *Skip when shuffling*.
Assuming, however, that the books consist of more than one file you may have problems if you plan to listen to them on an iPod. The Audiobooks feature was originally designed for books that have been stitched up into a single file and hasn't been updated to reflect the changes that make multi-track audiobooks easy to work with in iTunes. There are tools for creating iPod-friendly audiobooks for which Aldo on Audiobooks is probably the best reference. Personally I don't bother with the extra effort and just have an "Audiobooks" playlist folder containing sub-folders for each author and within these playlists for each audiobook.

  • ITunes not importing MP3 files

Hi, I've purchased an album online from an MP3 retailer and downloaded the tracks from the album (I've done this quite a few times from this web site).
iTunes imported them fine using the "Add folder" function, however I've found that the song is skipped on my iPod.
I've tried to play the tracks from iTunes and they just don't play. So I deleted the tracks and tried to reimport them, but the Add from Folder function just doesn't do anything - no error, no music in iTunes. Strangely, I added other MP3 files to the same folder and tried adding from the folder again, and the new tracks imported fine, but the original album tracks did not.
I have double clicked on them from Explorer and Media Player plays them just fine, so the files seem OK. I've tried adding the files individually and tried using Explorer to "Open with iTunes" - again, nothing.
This is really annoying me - has anyone else had this issue? I'm using iTunes 7.6.2.9 on Windows Vista.
    Cheers,
    Pete

OK, if iTunes can't import the file, you could try working on the ID3 tag with a tag editor or repair tool. But if you experiment, always do it on a copy.
You could try MP3 repair tool:
    http://www.drtag.de/en/description_mp3rt.htm
MP3 Tag Studio also claims repair capabilities http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/
    Remove iD3 tags

Foobar2000 has tag removal and add capabilities
