Imported playlists but itunes doesn't see songs

I have dutifuly exported playlists both by right click playlist/export playlists and by file/export as xml and neither of those formats imported see any of the music. I have to find them all manually now. Any thoughts?

I'm looking for an answer to this same question. I imported a previous iTunes library. The playlist folders are in tact but are empty. No song info appears.
Can someone direct me toward a solution. The iTunes tutorial doesn't offer tips on this.

  • Migration Assistant problem? : New iMac's iTunes doesn't see the catalog or playlist of my old Mac's songs on an external drive

    So I just migrated from a 10.7.5 iMac 27" from 2009 to 10.9.4 on a 2013 27" iMac with Fusion Drive.
I don't use Time Machine. There are no backups involved here.
Used Ethernet. Only took 20 hours... (BTW, it stayed on "less than 1 minute left" for like 12 hours but luckily I was away and just left it going in hopes it would work... and it did!)
Anyway, back on my OLD iMac, I kept all of my songs on an external drive because my internal drive was too small. So iTunes looked at that drive for the music it was playing. I turned that drive off, even disconnected it, during the migration process because I thought it was confusing it during the first attempt which took 10 hours and nothing happened.
So now it worked, finally. On my new iMac, running Mavericks, I now have two user accounts... the one that was set up when I started the computer the first time, and the new one that transferred over via Migration Assistant. No problem. I can live with that. The only thing is, I would still think the old XML files and library stuff would migrate over... but iTunes doesn't see it. When I open up iTunes, in *either* account, iTunes behaves as if it's brand new. Repeat: the old and new account on the new iMac, both, do not see an old iTunes library which IS on the old iMac. Only the music is on the external drive from what I understand.
I've done this before so I know it's possible. I remember upgrading a long time ago and got iTunes to see my old library... even though some of the music was no longer there. It just puts "!" marks wherever there is no link. I was hoping that that's what I would find when I launched iTunes, but no luck. Even connecting the old hard drive to the new Mac (via USB) doesn't make iTunes all of a sudden "see" the old library. That data doesn't seem to be there. It didn't transfer over. Did it not transfer over because the songs weren't on the internal volume? Should I have left my external hard drive on?
So.... now that I've spent almost 3 days total trying to get this to work, and everything is running... I don't want to have to start over in order to get iTunes to work.  Is there a way I can just drag over some XML files or something from the old computer? I don't want to lose all of the ratings and personal notes and everything.
I should add also that I have like only four songs I've ever actually bought through iTunes. I'm still a bit old fashioned and buy CDs and rip them to Apple Lossless. So I hope it's not an authorization / reauthorization issue because I have like 1400 albums ripped.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    --Jeff

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

  • ITunes doesn't "see" my iPod Touch but Windows 7 does. What can I do?

Windows 7 using "MTP USB Device" driver so it recognizes that it's an Apple iPod but iTunes doesn't see it. I have spent the entire day following the "install/ininstall/start AMDS/stop AMDS" instructions ad nauseum...still no love. Frustration maxed out!

    Did you try here:

I downloaded itunes and installed it on my new pc but itunes doesn't see my apple tv on my network. Any help. Thanks.

did you try using the setting feature on ATV and point ATV to your new computer's itunes library. That's where you enter a new 5 digit code.

  • If I connect my iphone to my pc the computer see's it as a camera and itunes doesn't see it at all

If I connect my iphone 3gs to my pc the computer see's it as a camera but itunes doesn't see it at all, however, if I connect a friends using the same usb port and lead it connected straight away.  I've reset the phone uninstalled itunes abd re installed and I've updated the software but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

If you have photos in the Camera Roll on your iPhone and have preferences set to open an image azure application on your pc when a camera is connected, your pc will do just that. That's how one transfers photos taken with the phone to a PC.
You can do two things to avoid this.
    1. Just quit the image capture application and open iTunes. You do have iTunes 10.7 or higher installed on your pc, right?
    2. You can change the preferences on your pc to do nothing when a camera is connected. And you can set the preference in iTunes to open iTunes when your iPhone is connected.

  • It appears since my Windows PC McAfee AV subscription expired my PC's iTunes doesn't see my two Apple TV2's.  My computer has internet connection thru router and my ATV has internet connection thru same router.  My iPad can see the ATV but it can't see iT

My Windows PC iTunes doesn't see my two Apple TV2's (in the speaker button in lower right of iTunes), I believe this problem began when my PC's McAfee AV subscription expired.  My computer has internet connection thru router and my ATVs have internet connection thru same router so it's not a networking issue.  My iPad can see the ATVs but it can't see iTunes so the problem appears to be PC/iTunes related.  I turned the PC's firewall off but no joy.  I uninstalled the expired McAfee and still no joy.  Reboot = no joy.  Glass of scotch = no joy.  Need help!!

Wanted to add that I turned on Home Sharing w/the same account in iTunes and ATVs.  And I've successfully streamed music/photos to my ATVs for over a year.

    Mac: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591

Your computer should recognize the Camera Roll only, as a digital camera. iTunes must recognize it for syncing and backup.

  • ITunes doesn't see PSE7 images

I had Photoshop Elements 8 installed, and iTunes could see those photos just fine. But then my trial expired, so I had to uninstall and use PSE7. The problem is that iTunes no longer sees my PSE7 catalog and instead sees the PSE8 catalog as it was before it was uninstalled. I managed to track down where iTunes apparantly copied the PSE8 catalog and deleted it, but now iTunes doesn't see any PSE catalogs at all.
Of course there is the option to sync with individual folders, but I'd rather not do that since PSE keeps them nice and organized, and iPod Touch doesn't show the folders within subfolders of the selected folder for photo syncing. So, how can I get iTunes to pick up my PSE7 catalog again?

I had something similar (if not the same) happen. I was going to transfer some new shows from iTunes on my laptop into my iPod. The msg I get from iTunes: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "(iPod'S name)". Use the iPod Software Updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings." The best part....my iPod's empty! I don't know what happened but I tried to connect it to my work PC and it read the same. I can reload my iPod with songs/shows. That's not an issue BUT I'd like to know what may have caused this and how do I know it won't happen again?

  • HT203167 Music files present but iTunes can't see them

OK, I have the unfortunate situation that all of my music files appear to be present and correct, but iTunes just shows nothing at all. I have tried all of the suggestions I can find online, including changing the Music folder using iTunes Preferences/Advanced, selecting a new folder on startup by pressing the Alt key on my MacBook, and re-installing iTunes from scratch, but nothing seems to work.
    Config: OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) and iTunes 10.6.3 (25)
I have a sneaking suspicion that this occurred just after the system upgraded my version of iTunes, but can't be 100% certain since upgrades seem to happen all the time.
This is obviously frustrating, so any advice would be gratefully received. It's an unusual case I think, in that I've got my music and backups, but can't actually play the blasted stuff with iTunes. As a last resort I may have to just re-import it all, but this will take and age and will almost certainly lose my playlists, so I consider this a last resort. Everything is there on the 'puter, so I don't see why it has to be so **** difficult!

Oh well, nobody replied so I went out on a limb and thought I'd try a combination of the various fixes that I had seen for similar problems on this forum. This seems to have worked, so I thought I'd document them here, in case anybody has the same problem. Yes, I know it's just repeating stuff that other people have said (by definition), but it'll be useful for me, even if nobody else ever uses it.
I'd pretty much resigned myself to screwing everything up, so I thought I might as well tidy up my iTunes folders to begin with, since these had got rather scrambled over the lifetime of iTunes.
As a first step, I exitted iTunes and used the OS X Activity Monitor to kill the iTunes helper.
I then moved all of the various iTunes media folders from the "iTunes" directory to the newer "iTunes\iTunes Media" folder. The media folders that I had on my system were: Album Artwork, Audiobooks, Books, Mobile Applications, Movies, Music, Podcasts, Ringtones, TV Shows, Voice Memos, iPod Games and iTunes U. Note that this is just what I found on my setup - ymmv.
Rather pleasingly, by performing this step I located a number of orphan media files that I hadn't seen for ages (years in some cases), so it was a step well worth doing imho.
Since I didn't want to waste time actually moving any files at this stage, I started up iTunes and set the iTunes/Preferences/Advanced dialog to disable the "Copy files to media folder" option.
I then dragged each of the media folders from the Finder into iTunes. I was really pleased that it was able to automagically assign them to the correct categories under the iTunes LIBRARY. Apart from the music selection the transfer was pretty fast, which made it easier to stomach. I also began by transferring some of the smaller folders (e.g. Books) which reassured me that the process was working correctly.
Note that the "File/Add to Library..." menu option did not work in the same way - only dragging from Finder.
After all of this, my media content inside iTunes was pretty much pristine, with all of the media located, in the correct place and with al of the artwork as expected.
Unfortunately, I had lost all of my playlists, which is something I had resigned myself to. However, I'd read elsewhere that these might be recoverable from the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file. I did a quick scan of this file and was able to locate some of my old playlists - much to my surprise (recall, this was after I had already made several attempts to recover my files, so I was expecting this to have been scrambled).
I therefore copied this file to my desktop and used the iTunes "File/Library/Import Playlist..." to see if I could recover any playlists from this file. Amazingly, they all re-appeared. Better yet, they actualy worked, despite the fact that I had moved loads of the files during the earlier housekeeping stage. A few playlists were duplicated but it was a trivial step to delete the unwanted ones.
To finish up, I re-enabled the "Copy files to media folder" - fully expecting this to take an age to move the files around. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised that nothing seemed to happen - possibly because all of the media files were already in the 'correct' location - I'm not sure on this point.
So, to finish - all of my media files are back in iTunes, all of the playlists recovered, and I've also recovered some music files and movies that I thought I'd lost. Not a bad outcome for a couple of hours work (most of which was during the initial housekeepign step).
If I had the time, it'd be nice to write a script to do the housekeeping step, but well, you know how life goes...

hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music'  then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo
