Imported Tape Broken into Too Many Clips

I tape my movies with a Sony Digital 8 camera, model DCR-TRV103, and import them to my MacBook Pro, using iMovie HD 6. This has been working very well. But one recent event I taped, upon importing, started breaking a long clip from the tape into very many short clips in iMovie, most only a few seconds long, with some just a fraction of a second in length. When the number of clips in iMove exceeded 100, I stopped the importing, even though the tape was less than half way through. I have not had this problem either before or after this one particular tape.
The event I taped was a ride on a tourist railroad, so I was bouncing around a lot. Maybe this threw some kind of errors into the tape? I'm grasping at straws here. Viewing the tape, as it imported into iMovie, it looks just fine, with no irregularities apparent, at the same time that dozens of clips are being populated.
I shot another movie after this one, and had no problems importing it into iMovie. But during this taping, the camera was stationary. Importing this one gave only two clips for an entire 55 minute tape.
Any ideas?

I have this problem too. I was able to make the situation a little better by cleaning the video heads with a cleaning tape, but the problem still persists. Now, I am having to work around this problem by turning off the option to "start new clip @ scene break" in the import preferences. I then set the maximum clip length to 1 minute. Then I get a series of 1 minute clips that I can then break into scenes in iMovie. Not an optimal situation.

  • Imported HD footage separates in many clips!

When using the SonyHD FX-1 when I set to capture the whole tape it separates the tape into many clips. I believe it makes a separate clip for each time the camera was turned on and off. There is no timecode breaks whatsover and this process is repeatable, meaning I can do it multiple times and get the same separation of clips. This makes my workflow very slow and frustrating especially when the camera was stopped many, many times for a particular shoot.
    Any ideas?
Also, any ideas on how to consolidate the tapes that have already been segregated into one contiguous clip?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Adam

I am actually working with nature footage, so there is often many "takes" with different themes within one start/stop of a camera. For example, shooting birds...a lot can happen in a minute, especially when there's a lot of them gathering.
Do you know where that setting is...is it on the camera or in Final Cut?

  • Too many clips!!!!!

Help! Hi , I am having this annoying problem. iMovie is breaking my scnes up into very small clips of about 2-3 seconds sometimes. This started to get much worse when I either switched fro LP to Sp speed, or when I turned on 16 bit audio.
This would not be so bad if I could take all the small clips I know are from one scene and join them into one clip.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi!
My dad's having the same type of problem, except that iMovie keeps importing the same 2:12 seconds as a clip. Which means he can't even paste all the bits together because there's only just one clip imported several times.
He says File Vault is turned off.
He tried changing the preferences as well.
I just upgraded his iMovie from the standard to the HD version, and the same problem occurred before and after...
    What can we do?...

    Hi,
If you have Zoom turned on, tap on the screen with three fingers to toggle it.  Then go into Settings>General>Accessibility, and turn Zoom off.  For resetting your iPod, see:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430.

  • Imported music using far too many GBs of storage

I got a 160GB iPod Classic a few months ago and have been steadily importing my CD collection to iTunes to sync with the new iPod. It's advertised as being able to hold up to 40,000 songs. Currently, according to my iTunes, 3000 songs are taking up nearly 25GB of storage space! That seems dramatically out of whack to me. At this rate, the iPod won't even be able to hold 20,000 songs. I figure the problem has to be something with the importing of the music that causes it to take up too much space. How can I fix this going forward and can I do anything to fix the problem with the music that has already been imported so that I don't have to do it all over again? I would appreciate any assistance I can get with this. Thanks!

The answer lies in the small print. Apple's quoted 40000 song capacity is for tracks ripped at 128kbps AAC encoding. If you are using anything higher than this then capacity will be reduced accordingly. If you are encoding in iTunes Plus format, which matches the tracks you download from the iTunes Store, then this is in 256kpbs AAC which means you will only get around 20000 tracks capacity.
Personally I prefer 256kpbs AAC, but the choice is yours - more tracks at lower quality or fewer tracks at higher quality.
There is a solution for your iPod. If you tick the option to 'Convert higher bitrate songs to 128 kbps AAC for this iPod' when you sync your iPod with gouges ti will convert all your tracks to the lower quality before transferring them to your iPod. This allows you to keep higher quality files on your iTunes, but squeeze the max number of tracks onto your iPod. Bear in mind it can take a long time to sync your iPod if you choose this option, so maybe leave it syncing overnight.

  • File won't import due to 'Too many audio channels'

I've managered to import one 30 minute video recorded off a screen recording program off the AppStore called ScreenRecordStd. This software has an 'include computer audio' button which I activated after the first 30 minute video.
Once trying to import any videos with this selection activated they won't import, telling me there are too many audio channels.. so I know it is due to this selection. The file information tells me I have two AAC 44100 Hz Stereo files as part of the video, when I change it to mp4 or h264 file formats it does import but the video/audio are not in sync when played through on Premiere Pro but are totally fine in QuickTime player.. also the second audio channel is a lot quieter when being played through on Premiere Pro than in QuickTime.
So, I hoping someone has came across this software or this problem and can help me. So I have two 44100 Hz stereo files within the video and the selection I am using says it can take up to three stereo files, so why is it telling me it can't import because there's too many audio channels??? I've tried changing the video to h.264, mp4 and they just struggle with the video being too slow and avi. just has the same issues as .mov.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

Why do you convert the media to start with? Are you aware of that you are converting the camera's MPEG2 to the MPEG2 you get when creating the new MXF file? (XDCAM HD = MPEG2)
I would never ever re-compress/convert the already-in-camera-compressed MPEG2 to compressed MPEG2 for editing and then having it to end up in let's say either MPEG2-DVD or H.264. You loose one generation and i would not want to lose it by re-encoding to MPEG2 since, imo, re-encodong MPEG2 to MPEG2 should be avoided. (MPEG2 to MPEG2 = The quality is degraded too much) If you still want to re-encode the footage i would use another codec, DNxHD/CineForm/Lagarith. (Pick your favorite)
You can use the MXF files from Canon XF Utility in CS6. (The files MXF are just copied from the original folder structure, so no re-encoding is done.)
AFAIK, the problems with tearing video go away by using the MXF files you get from XF Utility. If the tearing is still present, close Pr and delete all Cache files. Open Pr and let the Generating Peak file finish.
AFAIK 8 audio channels are standard in MXF OP1a according to SMPTE D10.

  • Help! iMovie deleted many clips during a "split event" procedure.

Please help. I realized that my 2004 "event" had far too many clips in it and decided to split the event. (Trying to remedy a poor organizational system). The split appeared to work fine, creating a new event 2004 1 that I assumed had my clips in it. They weren't there, or in the original event. Worse, other clips from that event were also missing. I have restarted the computer, still not there. And yes, I did check to be sure I was viewing ALL clips, not just favorites etc.
I do have a backup, but after much reorganizing it is just about impossible for me to figure out which clips disappeared. I had just this week given up on using iPhoto for my old 1000+ 30 second clips from my digital camera and had imported them directly into iMovie. I had also just imported all my old video footage from my nonHD camera. And of course, I hadn't re-backed up yet, but I had deleted them from iPhoto. (Was going to backup tonight to my new drive I bought for that purpose...)
    Any suggestions?

Thank you. I tried that and the actual folders match what shows in iMovie. I'm backing up now, but when I'm done I'll just reimport from my older backup and tapes and try to figure out what's missing.
What I'm really concerned about, is does iMovie just arbitrarily make things disappear often? How do I know there aren't other things from other events that are missing? Obviously right now I can do a file count, but once I actually start working with the clips and deleting the bad ones etc. how can I know if things are suddenly missing? (I have over a thousand clips so it isn't obvious.) These are baby clips which are precious to me...
In case it matters, just had my mac in for full diagnostic and it's fine. The hard drive is new and tests fine. Permissions on my C drive HAVE been being corrupted during file imports from my old Sony digital8, possibly that caused the original problem? I will be sure to check permissions before opening iMovie from now on.

where i am not able to import the last video clip.It is giving me same error "file contain too many audio channels"".

I too am getting this error in Premiere CS5.  I was digitizing a Broadcast VHS and since I did not have a breakout box, I hooked it up to a Sony DV deck so I could connect via firewire and capture inside Premiere.  I was able to capture and import 1 of the 3 clips and it did have 4 audio channels attached to it.  However, upon closer inspection only 2 channels had a waveform.  I captured the other 2 clips the same way, but this time, Premiere give the error "The file contains too many audio channels."
    Any ideas?

  • Import comes in as ONE LONG CLIP, no breaks... DV Camcorder TOO OLD ?

I check the prefs in iMovie, and its set correctly... Is my SONY DCR-TRV20 too old?
I checked the CAMERA SETTINGS, but a little unsure about these. I think I've all the EDIT and LINK settings, but...
    Any help you can provide.

    iMovie HD

If your camcorder hasn't been used for many months, its battery may have run down.
The external battery usually recharges a much smaller, teeny battery inside the camcorder, and that one keeps the cam's internal clock, date and time, ticking over.
If the internal clock battery has run down, or the clock hasn't been set, then every shot you shoot will have the same date and time on it. This means that when you import your material into your Mac, iMovie can't read any difference between all your shots, so they all import as one long, continuous take.
So recharge your camcorder's battery, leave the charged-up battery clipped onto the camcorder - or leave the charging wire connected to the camcorder - and re-set your camcorder's date and time.
Anything shot after this "reset" should import correctly, as single clips. But that won't make any previously shot material now import as individual clips!
So it's probably not that your cam's too old: it's that the battery(ies) has/have been run down to empty.

  • DV not being broken into individual clips

I just imported some DV from my video camera into iMove HD 5.0.2. Usually, the DV tape is broken into multiple clips about 9 minutes long (2 gig) segments. This time, the tape just ran and I have 1 clip in iMovie Clips pane that is 32 minutes long. This has never happened before.
Any idea what is going on?
    David

The 2GB clip limit (9+ minutes) existed in iMovie 4, but not in iMovie 5. Neither iMovie 5 nor iMovie 6 has a limit.
iMovie 6 preferences lets you set the clip limit to what you want.
And of course, all versions let you limit clips to the scene breaks.
If that's not how it's working with your camera, you might want to check that the camera clock is set correctly. When it's not, iMovie can't see the scene breaks on the recorded video.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Breaking 1 clip into many clips

My project (over 1 hour long) consists of many 40-year-old super 8 movies. Half were digitized into a proprietary Sony format, which had to be converted to a format iMovie 6 HD could use; half were already in an iMovie HD6 project. They were then combined into one file in iMovie HD 6, and exported in .dv format for use in iMovie 11. However, iMovie 11 imported almost one hunded clips as one clip. I now need to break it into lots of clips so I can edit very dark spots, blown out spots, and bad color, and add music. iMovie 11 help says I can break 1 clip into only 2 or 3 clips. Help please!
Thanks in advance for any solutions.

I would recommend that you break apart the big DV clip using MPEG Streamclip.
    Here are the details.
Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    Start MPEG Streamclip
In iMovie, Right-click on your long event clip and select REVEAL IN FINDER.
A Finder Window will appear. Drag the highlighted clip to MPEG Streamclip.
If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
You can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o.
IN MPEG Streamclip, Use FILE/EXPORT to DV
Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month. hh is hours in 24 hour time.
Save the resulting files in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
Go back to MPEG Streamclip, and set the in and out points for your second clip and go through the steps again.
Continue until you have created all your clips.
In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the files you saved above.
iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

When opening taps in FF7.1 I can get a few taps open without any problem, surfing normaly just fine.
When i open too many taps (normaly around 5) then FF can't connect to ANY pages anymore, not even the ones i had open before.
I've used the current installation for 2-3 months without problems, but after i moved my PC to a friend and back home this problem startet.
I've made a clean installation of FF7.1 only importing bookmarks to get alot of tabs open quick.
All firewalls/antivirus programs have been disabeled, and the rest of the net works just fine.
No error messages of any kind, it just keeps turning the "loading page"-circle untill i get tirred of it.

Currently i have reverted back to FF6.0 to not go crazy from having to use IE.

FF6.0 does it as well... any idears ?

  • I tried to import a video into iMovie. Its says their is not enough space on the destination disk. I deleted many projects, and events. Nothing changed. What files do I delete and how?

I tried to import a video into iMovie. Its says their is not enough space on the destination disk. I deleted many projects, and events. Nothing changed. What files do I delete and how?

Hard drive full or near full:
You are going to have to delete, move or archive your data to regain hard drive space.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!
