Imported video files are 7-8 times larger than the original!!!

I really like iMovie but the thing is iMovie imports my video files (taken in my AVCHD Sony Handycam HDR-CX11E) with an approximatly 7 times larger file size than the original file size of the movie. And still I have chosen the option "Large - 960 x 540". I really don't know if there is any solution to this "problem". I would be thankful for anyone who could give me a solution.
Regards

The best way to find out is to try it. Take a small but representative sample, do some edits, export as H264, then reimport, do some edits, export again.
I expect some degradation, but here mostly the problem may be the quality (or lack thereof) of the analog originals.
Also, let me clarify: QT movie per se means nothing in terms of quality or compression. The QT is a container format. Inside it can be a high quality, high bitrate ProRes 4444 or a highly compressed H264, or a number of other things.
In FCP X, when you export a Master File, you get to decide in the settings which codec to use (e.g. Prores vs H264), but the output file will still be a QT file.

  • I record a video of my screen in Quicktime.  I then open the video in iMovie and do the most basic of edits: cutting portions of the .mov I don't need.  The edited file is ~2-3 times bigger than the original Quicktime file.  What gives?

So my question is, how do I get iMovie to edit the file without changing the size of it?  It can't improve the quality of the Quicktime movie by making the file size bigger, so why does it do this?  The Optimization options do not help the situation.  Any insight into this is greatly appreciated!

  • Why are my trimmed QT movies larger than the original?

I have a bunch of raw .dv files copied over from my camcorder that have never been edited or opened in any other program. When I open in QT X and trim the file, the trimmed MOV version is often larger than the raw DV. On one file, I even trimmed about half of it away and it still came out larger. I was under the assumption that DV is not compressed and neither is raw MOV,
After trimming the file and saving it, I select "movie" as the format since at this point I want to leave the files in as raw as a format as possible before I bring into an editing program like iMovie.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Since QuickTime X doesn't have any export "options" (other than dimensions) a "raw" DV Stream format should always be smaller in file size.
DV Stream is about 13 GB's per hour of recording. A QuickTime X "conversion" would use H.264 video and AAC audio codecs and should be about ten times smaller in file size.
Are you sure your files are DV Stream?
In any event, QuickTime X may not be the best tool for the job.
QuickTime Player Pro doesn't re-compress the source codec if you use a simple "save" or "save as".
A regular "save" after doing any edits will replace your source file with the newer version. No way to restore any of the edited information so you should use save as (keeping the original).

  • Why would an alias file be larger than the original file?

I have a simple document that is 106kb. When I create an alias to the file, the alias is 133kb. Why would the alias file be larger than the orginal file when the alias file is simply a redirect to the original file?

  • If my imported video files are 720 by 480 will my movie have to be small sized?

I'm editing DV video files that, when I look at the specs on the file, says that the dimensions are 720 x 480. Common sense tells me that I shouldn't necessarily have to end up with a DVD that only covers about 1/3rd of my final viewing screen, but perhaps common sense has little to do with it. Much like the lack of it in the US Congress. However, that's what I'm ending up with right now. Is that just the way it is, or are there settings that I can make when importing or exporting that will allow me to fill up my Windows media screen a bit more with the final movie?
    I'm using CS5, intel core 2 quad CPU Q6600 2.40GHz 64bit system with 3gb of RAM.

    > fill up my Windows media screen
I don't do such, but I think there is an option in media player to expand to full screen instead of the actual resolution... which, of course, means the video will not look as good since it will be somewhat blurry

  • Converting old CS files to CS5 is creating hugh files-4 to 6 times larger than original. How can I a

I've been trying to convert some old CS files into CS5 files. These are simple files: some text, simple line work, a photo or two (tiff, jpeg or eps) and some simple illustrator art. These files were typically 500k to 800k. The updated files are 3 - 6mg. I tried to start with a new file and copy/paste the text, line work and art and would end up with a file around 2 - 3 mg without photo. What do I need to do to end up with a normal size file?

It rather depends whether you have effects that interact with the photos.
If you do, it may be better to embed just prior to saving as pdf.
My policy is to keep images linked for as long as possible.
Remember too that the photos will be converted to the colour mode of the Illie file as soon as they are embedded.
InDesign works differently in that you never need to embed or alter the colour mode of RGB images in a CMYK file,

  • Initial time machine backup larger than the original

I have been using time machine with a 1 TB time capsule without issue on a older Macbook in the house. I just got a Macbook pro and am attempting to backup on the same time capsule. During setup, Time machine states there is 118GB to back up when looking under options (which is correct). Then when it goes to back up after "processing" it states that it is backing up 330gb (larger than my harddrive of 250GB). I took off about 167 GB of files off the time capsule. I erased the backup file on time capsule and started over. It still says that there is correctly 118GB to back up before it starts but now after processing it says it will be backing up 163 GB. (330GB-167GB=163GB) Of note there is 45GB of other stuff including the backup of the other Mac still on the time capsule. (163GB-45GB=118 GB.) It appears to be calculating to re-back-up what is already stored on the time capsule. How do I deal with this issue?

Your backup drive has been use to backup both computers. TM may think it should still be backing up both computers. If both computers are on the TC network that would be the normal expectation.
If that's not the case but you've given the new computer the same Computer Name as the old computer, then TM may be trying to backup files that are non-existent but still located in the backup set. If this is the case, then reformat the TC.

  • When opening an image in Photoshop CC, the file appears at a size many times larger than the file I'm opening:  a 1mg file opens as 9mg.  This started in the past few days.  What has happened?

My files have suddenly started opening in Photoshop CC in a much larger size:  a 1mg file will open as 9mg, for instance.  The more layers I add, the more the multiplication until I'm up so large the program closes down.  This never happened before and I don't know if I've changed something by accident or what.  HELP!

Let's try something easy. Reset your preferences.
If in Windows, close Photoshop, then double click the PS icon to start it.
Now very quickly hold down the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys, and you will see a delete settings dialog where you would answer "Yes".
See if that fixes it, if not...we will need more information:
    Adobe product and version number
    Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
    Screenshots of the problem

  • Why is Keynote storing images 20x larger than the original file size upon import?

In Keynote, I'll add a 150KB PNG image to a slide and the 500KB presentation goes to 3.7MB... a more than 3MB increase. I'm trying to troubleshoot large file sizes as a simple deck takes up 50-100MB on disk. Anyone know what is going on to make the file 20x larger once added to Keynote? And how I can keep the file size down? The 'Reduce File Size' option is worthless in this case... offering a less than 10% reduction on the earlier 20x amplification. Thanks

    Chris H 71 wrote:
This was originally in Keynote 09.
Yes converting an existing version 5 file in to Keynote 6 does many strange things. Any existing version 5 files I have, I continue to edit in 5. When starting a new presentation, I can use 6 without many problems at all.
I provided the files to replicate the issue to Apple support and never heard back.
Apple do not provide feedback to users on issues, they only request information from users.

  • Why is the downloaded app 3-4 times larger than the size listed in the App Store?  The settings show Angry Birds go at 316 mb and the app desc size is 93 mb; the FB is about 3 times larger also.

Found this trying to manage the storage on the ipad.  Just wondering if the file size listed on the App Store is a zipped file.  If so, isn't that misleading?

  • Export images come larger than the original

The other night I did an event shoot and imported JPG photos into Aperture. The file size on average was about 1.5mb/photo, but when I exported the photos, they came out to be like 5.7mb/photo or greater. I couldn't understand why the exporting processing was taking so long, and I discovered it was because the files were too large. This seems to be happening only in Aperture in my laptop. It doesn't seem to happen with Aperture on my Mac Pro. Anyone else experience this problem? Solution?

I can't recall if it defaults to 10 or 12. 12 makes pretty large files, as you've seen
As to "enough" for your photos -- how are you printing? This only affects saved JPEGs. If you're creating files and sending them to a web site for printing... they'll still probably be good enough at 8x10. The real issue is repeatedly re-saving JPEGs over themselves... each time you do a little more quality is lost (JPEG is a "lossy" compression so each time you re-save you lose some more). A single save is probably just fine. But I wouldn't save at quality 9 and then save over it again and again after I'd thrown out my original.

  • When i export a video in windows media format is shorter than the original

I tried a lot of time, using Quicktime 7.3.1, to convert a .mov video to a Windows Media .wmv video using the default settings but the result is shorter than original, my original video is 4 minutes, the exported just 30 seconds.
Maybe is my fault, something wrong in my laptop or a Quicktime bug?
I hope someone can help me
    Thanks, Marco.

You have the trail of Flip-4-Mac. You need to buy the full version to be able to convert to WVM.

  • Exporting a jpg is 3 times larger than CS3

Clearly I'm missing some setting - I'm opening jpgs that had been created with FW CS3 and immediately saving it (for troubleshooting purposes). Optimize Quality is set to 75 | Smoothing 2. The file is fully 3 times larger than it was prior to save. I've exported instead of the straight Save and have the same result. I've lowered the Quality to 60 to make sure I was invoking the compressor ... the file lost 2k.
So a 260x83 bitmap moves from an acceptable 5k to 17k (or 15 with unacceptable compression level)?
Can't be right. Not even Adobe could have mucked up FW this badly.

Not too certain about this, but the increase in file size might be due to additional meta data in the file - that easily adds ~10kb to the file, so it might explain what you are seeing. But as far as I am aware, the save for web functionality in FW should remove meta data.
Use RIOT (radical image optimization tool) (win) or ImagOptim (mac) to check if this is the case or not, and remove the meta data.
