  • When importing from Canon XL2, audio is delayed by 5 seconds

When I import from Canon XL2, the audio track is there, but it is off by a few seconds. At first it was only about 1 or 2 seconds, but when I re-imported it got worse. It's fine when I import through iMovie, but I lose my multiple audio tracks.
I know I can re align on the timeline, but that's not the point!
    Thanks for help

You may have nearly filled up your hard disc.
1 hour of DV is about 13GB. Trying to capture a 2nd hour would take you up to about 26GB of space used up on your hard disc.
It's better to capture to an internal disc, or to a FireWire-connected external disc, as USB - even USB 2.0 - can't necessarily keep up with the constantly sustained data throughput speeds which DV needs.
A Mac needs about 10% of your total hard disc space to be empty, to allow for its internal 'housekeeping', log files, virtual memory files, etc. So if you have an 80GB internal disc, with, say, 13GB of operating system & programs, plus, say, 20GB of pictures, plus, say, 13GB of documents, and you add 13GB (1 hour's worth) of video, that's 59GB, and you'll need about 8GB of free space, that's 67GB accounted for, leaving about 13GB empty for your 2nd hour.
But that spare 13GB of spare space may be scattered around the disc, and not all in one sequential region, which may be why you're getting stuttering.
Not only that, but there may be 'dropouts' on the tape (brief signal disappearance) which may not show on the camcorder (..because many camcorders substitute a previous frame of video for any damaged frame..) but may only show up when you try importing. This may happen if, for instance, you recorded at a slower than normal speed, e.g; LP speed instead of Standard Play speed.
So check, first, how much empty space you have on your internal disc, and see if your external disc can be attached by FireWire, instead of the - what's becoming almost ubiquitous - USB connection.

  • HELP! Audio Drops Out When Trying to Capture Canon XL2 Footage

Please help me out here. I'm a freelance camera operator w/ a Canon XL2 and several times now I've gotten calls from the editors saying they're having problems logging my footage, mainly the audio drops out quite a bit, and I'm not talking bout one second for every 2 or 3 minutes. No. It's like every 10 seconds the audio drops in and out.
What's the deal? Two times the guy was using a Panasonic DVX-100A to capture, another time it was a SONY DSR mini-DV deck. With each incident I had to go over with my XL2 and use it as the capture device, which is a pain.
The program they're using is FCP HD or 5. But I think even when they just play the tape in their Sony or Pany cameras, the audio may still suck.
Help me out here, I can't be the only one with this problem.
    Thanks.

Well Robert Swanson, I hope my post wasn't taken offensively, it certainly wasn't meant as such. The only Canon camcorder I owned was the GL1. After switching to Sony's I can honestly say it would take something significant to go back. And, I was merely relating my experiences in trying to capture from other Canon camcorders so that I know where you are coming from. However, I am interested in the HVX being the "noisest" camera on the market. I am seriously considering this camera and would be interested in a review that points this out. I would be using the hard drive recorder instead of P2 cards.

  • HT200166 I have a Canon XL2 that will not capture video properly in fcp 10, where it does capture properly in fcp6 and 7. How can I "fix" fcp 10 to do this correctly?

My Canon XL2 (1394/firewire 400) will not capture correctly in fcp10, but it did when I had fcp 7 on the same computer. Is there a software fix that will allow me to use the XL2 with this program?

I just want to get this clear.
With FCP 7 and earlier you could capture a whole tape in one continuous 60 minute long clip.
FCP X cannot do that. It is designed to split the tape into its individual clips, however long they may be.
Are you saying that when you try to capture clips of 10 seconds or so, it only captures the first 4 seconds?
All I can suggest is that you trash the preferences with this free app.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

If neither iPhoto not IC can seethe card it might suggest an issue with the card or the ports on the camera/mac.
Try reformat the card, change the ports and/or use a USB Card Reader.

  • Canon XL2 962 x 480 Video Import

So I have a Canon XL2 and it says that it captures 962 x 480 resolution in widescreen (16:9) mode. Whenever I try and capture it with FCP it only allows 720 x 540 anamorphic. Is there a way to capture the full resolution (962 x 480)? I'm using a firewire cable connected directly to a harddrive and then to the camera. Could this be the reason why when I try to capture higher resolution (high definition) video it drops frames?
    JJH

    ya that is misleading . . .
set your capture to 720x480 but also set the anamorphic tag as well
when I try to capture higher resolution (high definition) video it drops frames?
there is no HD/HDV in the XL2
    you need to XLH1

  • Can you capture while shooting with canon XL2 in fcp on Macbook pro

Is there a way to capture or record directly onto macbook pro hd thru final cut pro, or thru log and capture window while shooting with Canon XL2.
    If yes, how, please!
    Thanks,
    Zia

As usual, Jim is correct. There's a reasonable possibility that something could go wrong with the capture; without a tape backup you would be hosed.
Here's what I do for live multi-camera recording (it works as well for single camera setups):
    • Connect all cameras to a video switcher/DVE
    • Connect the switcher's output to a DVCam VTR
    • Connect all audio sources to an audio mixer
    • Connect the audio mixer's output to the same DVCam VTR
    • Connect the DVCam's Firewire output to my Mac
With this set up I can switch/mix live between cameras while recording to the VTR and simultaneously to the Mac in FCP.
Not only do I end up with the live mix recorded to tape and captured in FCP, I also run 'safety' tapes in each camera for additional backup in case the TD (me) makes an error.

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 Sequence Settings - Importing from a Canon XL2

Under Sequence Settings and the Advanced tab, should I leave the Compressor Quality tab at HIGH or BEST? I have heard that it's best to keep it at High but I just wanted to make sure of it. Also, since the Canon XL2 is a progressive scan camera (right?) should I lave the Scan Mode to INTERLACED or PROGRESSIVE and should I leave the Aspect Ratio to 4:3 even though I am shooting in 16:9? Thanks so much for your help.

You recorded DV/NTSC 16:9 Anamorphic (or DV/PAL depending on where you live)
That's what your Easy preset settings should be.
And no, the camera does not record progressive. It records 29.97 interlaced - like all DV cams recording to tape do. If the setting said 24fps, the camera inserted pull down in the 29.97 image stream. Unless you need to go back to film, simply edit the material in a 29.97 timeline.

  • Capturing 24p from XL2

    Hello folks,
I have some tapes that were shot on a canon xl2 in 24p mode. i assumed initially that i would need to capture using the advanced pulldown. when i did this the footage came in still at 29.97. just to see what happened i also captured using the dv/ntsc 24 fps method, and the footage comes in at 24 but i'm scared that its not really doing it correctly. i've read a couple things that seem conflicting; one says you capture at 29.97 and render in a 24 timeline and then you're okay, i've also been told the 29.97 isnt really 24p and that i'm better off just using it at 29.97, which sounds dumb to me.
has anyone got some experience with this particular deal and could offer some input? thanks. so its clear also, this footage is not so much for the image, the camera was used to plug into an audio board for a concert so its image is less important than making sure playback is exact for the audio.
    thanks

ive never done this, so just to clarify i'll look for repeated frames and then count the pattern, right?
could i also just quickly apply the reverse telecine for each option to the footage and then scroll through them after they're done to see which looks better? it seems easier than counting the repeated frames, plus at this point i'm not sure which option applies to which cadence....though i'm sure i could find it online somewhere. thanks for your help.

  • IMovie footage shot with Canon XL2 looks exports to m4v which looks lousy

Video shot with Canon XL2, captured/imported into iMovie, it looks good in iMovie but when sharing it, it turns into m4v. Is this correct? Burned DVD in iDVD and it looks lousy. Isn't it supposed to be a mov file and not m4v?

Does that require me to get rid of my 100 Hz or 200 Hz screen and exchange it for a 24 Hz screen?
No.  This stuff looks equally good on CRT, Plasma or LCD.  (Though I do recommend leaving off such things as 100 Hz modes, as they have a tendency to produce the opposite effect, making film look more like video.)
Film shot at 24 FPS is shown as 48 half frames,
Where on earth did you get that idea?  Film is always shown theatrically as whole frames, whether 24 or 48 fps.
When will you send me the ticket?
Opening day for my first fiction project will be in my cousin's basement home theater, on a 9 foot screen with overhead projection.  I'll let you know when the release date approaches.  Better get your ticket early, though.  I'm expecting a line all the way around the shed, stretching clear to the garbage cans.

  • Canon XL2 Settings

    Hello.
I have a short film that was shot on a Canon XL2 16:9 24p. To log and capture the videos, I am using my Canon Elura camcorder.
I need the best settings for the Audio/Video besides Easy Setup as I would like to enter this short in festivals (fingers crossed).
Any other advice would be helpful as I am a newbie to FCP.
    Thanks.

Thanks, but I had a DP shoot it with his camera. He gave me the video tapes. So I importing the video on my camcorder. I don't own the XL2.
Ensure the camera is set to [2:3:3:2] pulldown mode.
    In FCP edit Audio/Video Settings.
Sequence Preset tab should be set to DV NTSC 48 kHz -
23.98, duplicate and edit selecting Anamorphic
    16:9
Capture Preset Tab set to DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced
(2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal, duplicate and edit
selecing Anamorphic 16:9 and change FPS to 23.98
I think i have that right.. Check pg. 44 of the XL2
manual, and the section on Input from the FCP
    manual.

The Mac side is dictated by the connection:  can be firewire 400, 800 or thunderbolt, whatever the Mac uses.
    The choices are:
4-6 pin cable for a Mac enabled firewire 400.
4-9 pin cable for a Mac using firewire 800
And 4-9 pin cable using a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter for thunderbolt only Mac.
You may find capturing live footage to be a problem unless you use an A/D Converter or camera using free run timecode.

Well, Ive got 6 Macs,  Ive got the firewire,  I just wanted to jack into the 'older' 2013 Macbook Pro via firewire.
Capture HOW,  what APP,   auto recognition?
Any easy lazy wares you recommend for quick looks and capture?
i dont wanna capture LIVE , just recorded being played off the tape thru Firewire to the macbook.
Users who post here usually have FCP X on their system.
However, QuickTime 7 or X will capture as does the Image Capture app.
Any of the Final Cut apps work as does iMovie.

  • Importing 16x9 SD into FCP

I shot a 16x9 project with my Sony Z1U in SD because that's what the client wanted. But I cannot seem to find the correct settings for Logging & Capturing.
When I select settings that are SD, I get a 4x3 window.
If I select anamorphic, the model appears fat. (She's not fat.)
If I select any of the HDV settings, the playback device doesn't work.
I've tried adjusting the various capture settings including creating a new 16x9 preset with Frame Size of 1920x1080 and the aspect ration set to "HDTV 1080i (16:9)" This also gives me a fat model.
All of these attempts showed a nice letterboxed 16x9 image on an external TV screen. I wouldn't mind having FCP give me letterboxing, as long as it all appears proportional.
I've even tried importing directly from the camera into the Mac, and the camera monitor shows a perfectly formed image, but the computer's FCP "Log & Capture" shows a letterboxed but fat model.
I've searched the manual and haven't found any references that are applicable.
Isn't there a simple way to import 16x9 SD footage and have it appear 16x9 SD?
    Thanks for any help.

'Proper' 16:9 in SD is anamorphic, which means a 4:3 recorded frame squashed vertically on playback to 16:9.
So if it displayed incorrectly you end up with very tall thin people. what you're describing sounds like 16:9 letterbox being treated as anamorphic, resulting in short fat people. This is odd as I'm sure the Z1 shoots 'proper' SD 16:9 not a LB.
What happens if you connect the a/v output of the camera to a SD monitor set to 4:3? If you've shot proper SD 16:9 you should see a 4:3 image that looks horizontally squeezed. If you see a 16:9 image then what you have is a 16:9 letterbox.
You say that if you use standard ntsc capture you either get a letterbox OR lose the sides of the shot, but how do you achieve this difference? Are you changing a setting on the camera, or in FCP? What does the clip info tell you about the captured files? Something is not right here but what you're describing doesn't make sense.
