Importing 16x9 DVD Video

I am running Premiere CS3.
I have converted a VOB file to a .mov (and also .avi) file to edit. The VOB file was shot in 16x9 (720x480 aspect) SD and when I play the converted file outside of Premiere the aspect ratio is correct. But when I import the video into my project it automatically converts it back to a 4x3 ratio. The project I am editing in was set up as a 16x9 project and I have already imported and edited other 16x9 video within this project along w/ older 4x3 video - I have no problems w/ this video.
Has anyone had any experience w/ this along w/ advice?

If the video is already on a DVD:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

Importing unencrypted dvd video files

I have always brought in video from DVD through a converter and used batch capture. However, I was given the following instructions for bringing in the files without a converter:
"Use imovie and do import and select dvd as source, will copy raw dv footage and save. Convert to quicktime stream, can do in imovie if have quicktime pro, and final cut has as well."
When I tried to follow these instructions using imovie, I got stuck after selecting import and then selecting the dvd footage. It would show a window as if it was importing and then nothing would happen. Where did I go wrong? Does anyone know how this should work who can explain it to me?

Roundabout way to do it and the instructions really don't make any sense anyway. Even if it works you'll be doing multiple conversions of your video.
Take a look at MPEG Streamclip. It's free, works great, and many people in this forum use it. It's a utility that will directly convert the DVD video to the DV format that FCE requires. (And if you don't already have the QuickTime MPEG 2 Playback Component installed on your Mac, you will need to get it from Apple - $19.99)

Importing/Ripping DVD Video

Miranda, Handbrake is indeed very good at ripping DVD content.
Do note that using this software to rip commercial DVDs is probably illegal in Canada and the US (especially for non-personal use). If the DVD provided by the client was produced by them, you should be fine, although they might then be able to give you the original video files (which would be preferable, since ripping will likely involve some loss of quality).

Editing DVD video

I have a client who is providing to me DVDs of various videos he has had produced, and wishes me to include them in a website. Since I got Premiere Pro as part of my CS4 package, I thought, no problem - I can just import the DVD video and edit out the first bit (the color bars and a blue screen with the production notes/title for the TV stations), and reencode it as an FLV to put on my media server and play via a streaming player.
I got it loaded into premeir (after I found I couldn't just open a video, but rather have to start a new project - very annoying!), I figured out how to place the .vob file onto the timeline after I imported it into the project... but now I cannot figure out how to select the first 24 seconds and delete it.
I tried searching the local and online help files, but nothing came up. This can't be that rare, can it?

You've gotten links to some tutorials, that will tell you how to do this and more, but for those following along at home, there are two quick ways to do just this:
1.) Click on the Head of your Video Clip, and drag it to the right. I'd do this with the Info Panel visible, just to make sure that my "click-drag" was perfectly 00;00;24;00 (there are other monitors for the TimeCode, but I like Info Panel). If you wish to leave that 24 sec. gap, just click-drag. If you wish the new Head to move to 00;00;000;00, add the Ctrl key, and when you Trim that 24 sec., the new In Point (Head) will move to the beginning of the Timeline.
2.) Move the CTI (Current Timeline Indicator) to 00;00;24;00, and hit Ctrl+k to Razor your targeted Tracks' Clips at that point. Rt-click and choose Ripple Delete to close that gap, or Clear to leave it.
As for starting a Project first, that is the basis for all work to be done, and its settings should reflect your source Assets. Trust me, you really do not want to even try to imagine Video editing without a Project. I know it sounds like unnecessary work, when all you want to do is just edit, but it is the entire foundation of any editing session. You cannot build a skyscraper without a foundation - you would not want to try it here either.

Do I need to compress video before importing into DVD SP?

Hello,
this is probably stupid question, but I would like to know, if I need to compress my video before I import it into DVD SP as an asset. It looks like everyone use Compressor before importing into DVD SP, (setting up number of passes, bit rates and so on), and then they do it again when setting up preferences in DVD SP. (setting 1 pass or 2passes, bit rate values)
So is not the video actually compressed twice? Once in Compressor and once in DVD SP?
And also, what video formats are actually OK to import into DVD SP? (QT, AVI, FCP movie, etc)
Does DVD SP take them all, or does it only have to be QT?

m2v will not be recompressed when placed on tracks (though in some instances it may recompress on menus.) Ultimately it is better to compress outside of DVD SP for control of encodes (and making AC3 files) and also some formats may not be supported by importing into DVD SP directly.

The command is gone because iDVD has been discontinued by Apple. After Apple discontinued iDVD they removed the iDVD burning link from iMovie. I still use iDVD sometimes, only because I have an old copy.

I don't know what RF means. When I have used HandBrake, I've used presets that apply to what I want to do, so I don't know the meaning of each individual setting. However, it appears that many of them are listed in the HandBrake User's Guide that is linked from the Help menu in the program:

Photoshop is not amateur-level software, and although it can edit a video, it cannot burn a DVD. Unfortunately, because I still use iMovie, I haven't tried anything else. You might want to read the reviews of various DVD-burning applications in the Mac App Store.
And maybe another forum member will jump in and help us here!

Question About Importing DVD Video to iMovie 9

I have some home DVDs with 3 types of files on them (.BUP, .IFO, and .VOB), and they are all grayed out when I try to import them in iMovie. iMovie help says the format has to be in MPEG-4, DV, or .mov files

Here's situation: I have several DVDs that were burned from home videos (high school football games, etc.). I don't know whether they were burned using iMovie/iDVD or some other program. I need to pull clips from the individual DVDs and combine them into a new DVD. I've edited movies that were recorded on my digital camera with iMovie and burned the project to a DVD using iDVD, so that part isn't a problem.
My questions are as follows:
1. I downloaded the QuickTime component and Streamclip, per the instructions in your post dated 12/5/09. After I installed each application (or thought I did), I dragged the files from the "download" folder to the trash. Now I don't see the applications in the Finder. Did I uninstall the applications when I dragged the downloaded files to the trash? Also, the file types in the trash are "Disk Images" (.dmg). Is that correct?
1. Will the QuickTime MPEG2 Component/Streamclip process work for DVDs that weren't created using Apple software?

Importing 16:9 video

I have taped video in 16:9 screen size with my DV camera and have imported the video into Final Cut Pro HD. My settings are in anamorphic 16:9 dv and everything look normal. When I render and export the final video and then import that final video into DVD studio pro, the video footage is elongated, stretched, and does not appear as cinema screen anymore.
I have always used Final Cut express and never had any problems with the wide screen before. I see more advanced setting options in Pro, maybe I am missing something. Any suggestions if I should adjust the render settings in Final Cut Pro? or should I adjust my DVD Studio pro settings?

I have the same problem. I do not see a box to check for anamorphic video in the video track. In the inspector tab there is a place for 4x3,16x9 pan and scan, 16x9 letterbox and 16x9 pan & scan and letterbox. I see nothing for anamorphic.

Getting Ripped DVD Video and Audio Into Encore

Do you have previously authored DVDs that need rework? Do you want to add menus with greater impact and functionality? Do you want to add some additional program or supplemental material? Does a client want their product demo DVD to be updated to reflect the capabilities of the new and improved version, but the source files no longer exist? Using Adobe Encore DVD and a freeware utility called DVD Decrypter (DVDD), you can accomplish this quickly and easily.
Disclaimer: I do not support the illegal copying and/or distribution of copyrighted works. The authors and distributors of the software I use have made it clear that they do not support illegal copying. This guide is intended solely to assist you in ripping and copying DVD video to which you have the legal rights. Any use of this guide to infringe the copyright of someone else’s intellectual property is prohibited.
This guide is based on Adobe Encore DVD 1.5.1 and DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0. Let’s Begin!
Place the DVD to be ripped in your DVD drive and launch DVDD. If you have more than one drive (e.g., a DVD-ROM and a DVD burner) make sure the one with the disc is selected in the Source dropdown list in the main program window. Now we need to set up DVDD to extract video in a way that is “Encore friendly”. This is the toughest part of the whole exercise. Click on the Tools menu item and choose “Settings…”.
Settings
General Tab: You can leave these set at their defaults if you like. Personally, I specify a custom Default Destination. I put my ripped video assets all in one place anyway, and having a default destination means I have one less thing to do when I rip a DVD.
IFO Mode Tab: Make sure that “Select Main Movie PGC” and “Enable Stream Processing” are checked. “Uncheck Suspect Cells” is probably a good default safety check. If your hard disks are formatted as NTFS, set File Splitting to “None”. I leave “Copy IFO File” checked with the default sub-items checked. Make sure that “Patch M2V Timecode” is unchecked. The items in the Create Additional Files section are purely optional. The author of DVDD has been kind enough to list which programs need which files; notice that Encore DVD isn’t listed as needing any of these extra files. I do keep the “Stream Information” box checked. DVDD generates very informative file names, but I like to keep “Include PGC Number” under File Names checked. Be advised you will get some lengthy file names after DVDD is finished ripping.
Stream Processing Tab: Since we enabled stream processing in the IFO Mode tab, we need to tell DVDD how to process those streams. To save yourself time and confusion later, check the “Convert PCM to WAV” box. Earlier versions of Encore required a Demuxed audio stream and a Raw video stream. Encore 1.5.1 can accept either type of video stream (Raw or Demuxed) but it does still require a Demuxed audio stream. However, I still recommend using Raw video and Demuxed audio, if only because it seems to be somewhat faster to process in DVDD. This workflow is also backward-compatible with earlier versions of Encore.
So let’s set up the Stream Processing tab now. In the Demux box, enter “0x8? 0xA? 0xC?”. This ensures that all audio streams in the selected PGC, whether AC3, PCM or MPEG will be set to Demux. In the Raw box, enter “0xE0”. This ensures that the video from the selected PGC will be set to Raw.
Additional Notes about the Stream Processing Tab:
1. For those of you asking the question, “What the heck is a PGC?” it’s just DVD-speak for the titles in a DVD project. And I’m not talking about the opening or end credits, either; I’m talking about the titles that result, for example, from the timelines you create in an Encore DVD project. There is a subtle difference between a PGC and a VTS (title set), but that's not important right now.
2. Happily, recent versions of DVDD create a WAV file after ripping that will import directly into Encore. Versions prior to 3.2.0.0 would create a WAV file that had to be imported to, and exported from, a sound editing program like Adobe Audition, Goldwave or SoundForge before Encore would recognize it.
Events Tab: For convenience sake, I recommend setting “Set Program Mode” in the Startup section to “IFO”. That way, whenever you launch DVDD, it will look familiar to you. You may safely ignore all of the other tabs in the Settings dialog.
Ripping
1.Under the Input Tab of the main program window, select the PGC you want to rip. You can only do one at a time.
2.Switch to the Stream Processing Tab. Verify that Enable Stream Processing is checked.
3.Check or uncheck any or all of the video and audio streams that are listed. Highlight each one to verify that all audio streams are set to Demux and the video stream is set to Raw.
4.If you didn’t select Default Destination in the General Settings Tab, then you need to tell DVDD where to put the ripped files now.
5.Click on the big DVD-to-Disk icon.
6.DVDD will announce, quite loudly, when it has finished. At that point you can rename the files or import them as is into Encore.
I hope you find this guide useful and that it helps you get the most out of your investment in Adobe Encore DVD.

OK, I can't tell you what we are doing, you'll have to trust me that it's for a very good cause. I'll simplify the use case as an example. If I can do the following we'll be OK:
1) Read video/audo files from a DVD that we created
2) Open these files with the QuickTime Player, click on Export to Apple TV to create an output file.
I'd rather not do an interim conversion of the video data (like use a 3rd party app to convert to mp4 first and then read into QT, but I'm considering a conversion to DV) because that could seriously hurt the apps effectiveness. I also can't use another app (MPEG Streamclip, HandBrake, VisualHub, etc.) to do the conversion.

Importing from dvd disk

I am very new to imovie and am trying to import my home videos from a disk. I have a sony camcorder that finalizes disks so you can view them on dvd players. I have no problem watching the disk on my computer, but when I try to import, a screen pops up saying that it is doing something to the unusable files, stops, then nothng is imported. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I not able to import from disks? Funny thing is I have no way of connecting the camera to the computer....no usb ports or fire wire port on the camera. HELP!

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

presuming they're not copywriteed commercial dvd's, you can use a program like Handbrake to convert the dvd files to mp4's that you can then import into iTunes and sync to your device.
If they're copywritted commercial dvd's then you'd have to break the copywrite encoding to transcode the files and since that is illegal in the US no one here can help you with that.

Sorry, but I don't understand what "5 1 hour video" means.
I do understand that you have a lot of clips that you want to group by various subjects, like vacation, etc. That's a perfect job for keywords, which perhaps is what you used when you named them?
If you did use keywords, go to that TL Index and click Tag at the top and then the keyword icon at the bottom. It should give you a list of only clips in that category. Select clip from the menu and it should highlight them. You could then copy and paste them to a new project for export. Repeat as necessary.
If you're going to do a lot of these, I'd suggest doing this from the event browser, applying keywords and then the clips into separate projects. But there are always more than one way to do things, and to each his/her own.
Again, I don't have any idea how long your footage is and whether it is even possible (or desirable) to fit it on to a single DVD. I mentioned iDVD because of its menu and sub menu capabilities. You will need another app like Compressor to do the chapter makers (unless Apple updates FCP before you finish your project and adds that capability. That would be nice,)

Import to DVD SP

Minor issue, here. But I can't quite figure it out.
*I complete a project (movie/with video and audio tracks) and I export (successfully) to my external drive. I know it's done correctly because I went and played the project from that drive. Good to go!*
I open DVD Studio Pro: and I have set my preferences correctly ( I think) and I click the import button.
I go back to my external drive and choose the file (movie I exported from FCP) and click import.
So far so good. But not quite.
I should see two tracks imported to DVD SP: video and audio.
I see only the audio track (with the little round green light) imported.
Why don't both tracks come in? Where is my video track? The entire project is intact on my external drive and was exported correctly: I think.
This is a minor newbie situation and I would love to know what I've done wrong.

Try to follow this minor development.
Before I read your post: I went back and exported my project from FCP *a second time* and renamed it # 2...the first one was named # 1.
Then I went to DVD SP and clicked import on *this # (2) video.*
*This time, David, both audio and video tracks were imported as should be!*
Why?
For some reason my first export to my external drive was not acceptable? But my second export was just fine.....*with no change in the content?*
Any thoughts, David?
