Importing 24 bit audio into FCE

I have a project that calls for impeccable audio quality. The client has supplied me with 24 bit aiff files.
The files import easily and when placed in the a 1080i60 timeline show no sign of needing a render.
Does this mean that I will retain the 24 bit quality all the way through to authoring of the DVD in iDVD?
I can find little or no information about this particular question in the manuals of the discussions. Thanks in advance.
Mike Pulcinella

Hi
iDVD gives in it's help file 48 kHz (16-bit as I get it)
nothing about 24-bit 96kHz
So me = doubtful
DVD Studio Pro most certainly handles it.
from Toast™ Document/Manual
+Toast encodes PCM at 48 kHz / 16-bit or 48 kHz / 24-bit levels, which+
+are higher than standard CD quality, and exceed the level of most+
+songs in iTunes library. Audio that has been recorded at 96 kHz /+
+24 bit is downsampled automatically unless you choose the 96 kHz /+
+24 bit option, which maintains the higher quality but significantly+
+reduces disc space.+
Very informative from Roxio - I think

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Trouble Importing 12-Bit Audio

I'm importing 12-bit audio from a Sony DCR-HC21, and Final Cut Pro HD has warned me that my audio will be out of synch because of a difference between the audio quality on the tape and the quality (16 bit) that I'm digitizing it at. I've been trying to change my audio catpure preset, but can't find a way to capture it at 12 bits. I've been checking around the discussion forums, and have seen that others have had the same problem, but couldn't find a solution anywhere...
    Does anyone have any tips?

You can create your own custom capture presets.

  • Importing a powerpoint presentation into FCE

I need to import a powerpoint presentation into fce. Can it be done? What does it look like? Do I need to tweak anything to make it the best possible image? Is there any online source available to learn how to do it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. many thanks. Eileen

    Agreed.
I was stuck continually doing PP Presentations and was so limited in what I was able to do. You will notice that PP on an Apple does allow you to do Quicktime transitions.... anyways.
I did finally buy Keynote (purchase iWork and it comes with Pages - Microsoft Word equivalent, however, also much better) and you can bring PP into it and do what the before was mentioned.
I am curious though... is the only reason you want to bring a PP Preso into FCP is so you have it as a movie...? Do you want to also control transitions and animations...? You would be off much easier within Keynote and have much more control as far as exporting as a .mov or .pdf and the likes; Keynote is extensive. But if it is really for stills... you can "Save As..." in PP as JPEG, and PP will kickout each slide (with or without transitions) as single jpeg files (set your resolution high...) and then obviously import the jpegs into FCP, and have still images do things....
Hope this helps, but truly you are better off with the $99.00 purchase and trump to Keynote - I got my whole office hooked!!

  • Can't import ACVHD video clips into FCE?

First, I've read so many forum comments on this I'm blue in the face, but i've still not found a solution. I've spent the better part of a week reading on this issue and still no joy, so please don't ask me to search - I've done that. To set up my issue...
I have a brand new Canon Vixia HF-R32 camcorder. I shot video in ACVHD (MXP) onto the camera's internal memory. I'm using Final Cut Exoress 4 on a MacBook running 10.7.4 I have a new external terabite HD set as scratch disk.
When I connect camera to computer to download clips things work to a point. I use Log and Transfer and my clips show up in the window. I can set in and out points. I can change the clip name, add scene notes, etc. etc. BUT - when I click the "Add to Que" the problem occurs. The video begins to 'process' as indicated by the little spinning status wheel. However - nothing ever shows in the transfer bar that should show the progress being made in the transfer. When the spinning wheel stops and I click on the clip I get a red circle with exclamation point and the message "Error: No Data."
YES - I have checked preferences under the gear at top of the L&T window and YES my settings are for All formats, All rates, Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio is set to Plain.  That much I gleaned from other posts in various forums, but that does nothing to solve my issue. I've also checkedunder Easy Set Up and have Apple Intermediate set there.
Tonight I spent time on phone with friend who has same type (but Panasonic) camera and same software. We compared many, many settings and all seemed to be set the same. He can import video, I cannot. When he either drags and drops clips from the L&T window or uses the "add to que" button, the status wheel spins, the transfer bar moves and when complete his clip shows up in the original FCE window for editing. Mine does not.
the software recognizes my camera, the clips are either loaded or accessed by the software, I can play the clips in the FCE viewer to set in and out points. Video and audio there is fine, but when I add to que it all falls apart.
I've already bought two video format softwares to change the MTS files to something else but that's not the route I want - I don't want to lose all the resolution. So amyone have any ideas how to get ACVHD files into FCE??? I'm about to shoot either the camera or me to put one of us out of our misery! This can't be that complicated as the ACVHD is a hugely common format.
    Any help most kindly appreciated

Have you verified that your copy of FCE has been updated to 4.0.1?

  • Can't import uncompressed quicktime file into FCE 3.5.1

I've imported other files of this type before and feel a little stymied.
It's an uncompressed quicktime, 507 megabytes, 720 x 486, codecs are Integer (Big Endian), Animation. When I try to import it I keep getting an error message. I've gotten the message before but could figure out the problem - for example, one movie had AAC audio and FCE wouldn't take it. Don't know what the problem is here and it's driving me nuts.
I tried converting it using quicktime pro (with the DV/DVCPRO NTSC) but FCE still ends up reconverting the file again and the resulting file looks fairly crappy as a result.
Anybody know why the file won't import? Or can someone suggest what codec to use with Quicktime Pro to convert the file so FCE what re-compress it?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE is a fixed format application. It can handles natively (without rendering)standard def DV, HDV and AVCHD.
The timeline(sequence) format can just be either standard or hight definition one. Not quicktime animation. So the non native material has to be rendered before playing the timeline. The rendered material will have the same resolution (or format) than your timeline, thus the poor quality as you display DV material (an interlaced format designed to be monitored on TV sets).(Quicktime animation format is an uncompressed format).
Converting your non-native material with QT Pro and importing into FCE is the way to go as this process allows editing in native format.
Did you monitor your timeline content on a TV monitor?

  • Importing 16 bit file into 24 bit project

    Whats up guy's
When importing a 16 bit file into a 24 bit project
should I convert the file to 24 bits or keep the
    original 16 bit depth?
I'm aware that the sample rate is converted to the
projects sample rate when importing files as long as
the corresponding checkbox is enabled in the project
    settings - assets pane.
I'm also aware that conversion can be done at a later
state after importing, but I'm curious about the best
or proper approach. Should this be done prior to importing
or should the file be kept in it's original state (16 bits)?
PS - If you could provide the chapter or page of the manual
this information is on that would be extremely helpful.
    Thnx in advance

    Qstn wrote:
When you say "alter the file's sample data" are you referring to
edits done in the sample editor or sample rate conversion?
both would qualify. there are some corner cases where bit depth does not matter when destructively editing sample data (as I outlined in my initial post).
If you're talking about the sample editor do you mean converting by
saving a copy as 24 bits and making edits to the copy might show tiny
    improvements?
    yes.
At this moment I don't intend on destructively editing the file but
you never know how processing and mixing might go until your done.
ok. if your file is read and processed in realtime (or via a frozen track) then there's no loss - logic will convert audio samples during playback to a 32 floating point representation as it is read from disk, before it enters the mixer, or is processed by your plugins.
i'm not sure if source bit depth determines bounce in place format- if so, and if you use this feature, then you should convert the source to 24 bit.
the end point is: unless you are desperate for disk space, just convert it to 24 bits. 16 bits is very 'last millennium' in modern production stages - there are a few exceptions to that (e.g., if the files are used by a software sampler, or if the format is required for compatibility with other hardware or software) but... most of the strong arguments for 16 bit died years ago. so, i'd say it's best to consider 24 bits as the minimum during production unless you have very specific reasons to go below that (and you fully understand the tradeoffs). if you want to know the 'whys', that's fine, of course. curiosity and knowledge don't hurt. if you're only looking for a recommendation, that's my recommendation.

  • Problems Importing from a DVD into FCE

    Hi all
I have successfully imported all my own footage from my dv camcorder in FCE 4 for a wedding and placed it into a sequence. However I have recently received more footage from another chap that was filming on the day, whom gave it to me on a DVD.
I know nothing about what camcorder he was using but initially I have two big problems: There is no audio and the image is squashed once imported into FCE (he shot widescreen and I shot 4:3), however my DVD player plays the audio.
The video files read like this "VTS01.VOB", however there seems to be other files supporting: "VTS01.BUP" and "VTS01.IFO" if thats any help on how to fix the problem? I really need the audio to work in FCE and some advice on changing the widescreen clips to my 4:3 project without looking squashed.
    Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Kev

Hi guys thanks for the links!
I think I would rather go for the hardware route simply because it sounds cheaper. I don't have an analog/ digital converter so an considering recording DVD output onto DV tape then importing it into FCE via my camcorder.
I'm kinda new to this video stuff so I have no idea how to do this. Can I just connect my Canon MVX20i to my DVD player somehow and record it to tape? I initially tried to connect it with the red, white and yellow connections in the back of the DVD player (to my camera) but nothing is happening. Neither on the record setting or playback setting on my camera.
    Any advice?
    Cheers for the help!

  • Importing clips from Imovie into FCE - Clips don't match

    Hi
OK I have been successfully importing Imovie clips into FCE, but have recently hit a problem. I make a rough edit in IMovie but when I open the imported file in FCE I get different footage to that which sits in the IMovie project.

ok I have worked around it a little by importing all the footage and that way I get most of it but still not all of it makes it through

  • How to import transparent PS layer into FCE?

I'm going nuts here! I created a white design in Photoshop and have tried every option to export it as a a transparent file but when I import into FCE, a white background appears. I set the PS to transparent, add my design and all is well... except when I try and import into FCE. I want the layer to float on top of a clip in FCE like a title. Any thoughts?

TIFF, to no avail, and all the others as well. I create a new doc in PS > transparent > drag my layer in from another PS document and end up with a transparent background and one layer with my design on it > save it as a TIFF (or other). Then I import it into FCE and the image is there but with a white background and not transparent. On a couple of the save as settings the background comes thru black and not white. Thanks for helping with thissss.

  • How do i import 480x360 ipad video into fce?

I'm trying to import video from my ipad into fce. Is there a way to set up my sequence with 480x360 parameters? I'd rather not have to render it when bringing it in.
    Thanks,
    Bob

" Is there a way to set up my sequence with 480x360 parameters?"
    No.
That size should be transcoded to a size that is the same as an FCE Easy Setup.
I'd use a DV Easy Setup.

  • Importing a FCP project into FCE?

I'll try to import a FCP 7.0.2 project based on DVCPRO50 mediafiles.... into FCE 4.0.1. It will not open (of course), but is it because of not supporting the codec, or is it generally not possible to open a Pro project in Express (dependent on the material)...?!?
Any tips or tricks? Can the FCP project be saved or converted in a way that FCE will read?

Unfortunately you can't open FCP project files in FCE, only the other way around. Even if the codec was supported (which it's not), it wouldn't be possible.
If you need to edit in FCE you could always export from FCP as a Quicktime Movie in a codec that FCE does support: namely DV-NTSC or AIC.

  • Import a homemade dvd into fce

I am trying to import a dvd of a show someone filmed for me but all I get is paper files when I try to import into fce the files look like this/Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEOTS.BUP
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEOTS.IFO
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEOTS.VOB
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_010.BUP
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_010.IFO
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_011.VOB
does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the footage other than analog playback through my deck any software or shortcuts

    Tom's writeup is good instruction.
If you use MPEG Streamclip you may also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($19.99 from Apple) if you don't already have it installed on your Mac.
However, I'd add that you might be surprised how good the footage will look via analog playback through your deck coupled with analog-digital conversion through a camcorder or a converter such as the Canopus AVDC-110.

  • Cannot import audio into FCE.

I'm trying to put my svhs video tapes on my harddrive. I am using the Pinnacle Movie Box DV from the VCR then Firewire from Movie Box to Macbook Pro. I get the video but no sound. This also happens in Imovie, but in Quicktime pro I get both the video signal and Audio signal. I have also tried connecting the line in and the same problem occurs, but again its ok in quicktime. It doesn't seem to be the moviebox problem, its just that Final cut express/Imovie is just not getting the audio portion. This the first time I'm using FCE or Imovie. There must be something I'm not getting. I need to get this video onto my hard drive before I lose all these memories. Please help. I've tried asking this on many forums, alot of peeps, but no answers.
One more thing... What would be the best format/file type to record to. For now, all I need is to save them to the harddrive to edit at a later time. I was thinking H.264.

Ok that worked. I clicked on Easy setup
Formats: (all formats) Rate: (all rates)
Use: DV-NTSC DV Converter (Whats difference between that and DV-NTSC BASIC) ???
    Then Clicked on File
Scrolled down to New Project and then capture. WORKED thank You.
Now I'll have to figure out the program but I'm sure I can do that. One more question... What format should I save it in? H.264, AVchd etc? At the time I just want to get all the video tapes onto the harddrive, then in the future, edit them and maybe get them to dvd/and leave them as files for future formats.

  • Importing 44100kHz 24-bit audio into 48kHz 16-bit project...

Can I do this or should I do some sort of conversion first? What are the implications?
    Thanks

    Hi Jim,
I wasn't clear.  I'm referring to synchronization and clocking issues more than duration.  I don't think that the sample rate matters if one is just using music for a soundtrack, but if one is , for example, recording audio and video at a concert, independently of each other, then it could matter depending on the answer to this question.  I have heard (and I don't know whether its true), that even some timecode synchronization systems don't do a perfect job at synchronization.  From personal experience, I have seen that two different digital recorders (they were different brands) will not necessarily stay in sync with each other when recording at the same sample and bit rates.
    Thanks,
    Steve
