Importing a commercial DVD to FCP

Hi all,
I'm trying to import a NTSC commercial DVD (public domain film) into FCP.
A lot of VOB files.
I'm fairly new at this - I tried using 4Media Video Ripper for Mac and it seemed quite confusing.
The movie clips I already have in my sequence (from another life!) are set at: 720 x 480, 29.97 fps, DV/DVCPRO - NT, 48 Khz. I'm trying to match these settings with the new movie clips.
I'm using MPEG Streamclip and I've set the Movie Exporter window as follows:
Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
100% quality
Sound: Uncompressed, Stereo, 48 Khz
Frame size: 720 x 480 (DV-NTSC)
Interlaced
Lower field
I also adjusted Streamclip preferences to fix streams with data breaks, to resample audio to 48
I'm still getting thousands of data breaks in the encoding window (10,000! and I'm only 9 minutes in)- and the results are a mess.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Also, is there a way to get the entire movie in one file or do I need to stitch it together?
Is 4Media Video Ripper for Mac of any use - or have I wasted my money.
Many thanks,
Mikado 1

While your film may well be in the public domain, it would seem that it has been placed on a DVD that has had anti-copying features added to it.
Discussion of methods which break that copy protection is prohibited on Apple Discussions. Those methods could also be used by others to unlawfully circumvent it on copyrighted discs too -this is a public forum that anyone can read. Obviously, Apple do not want to be put in a position where they could be accused by copyright holders of openly presenting this information.
In any case, DVD is a heavily compressed source and will degrade in quality when it is converted to an editable codec. Tools such as MPEG Streamclip and DVDxDV are useful when there is no other way to access the footage, but using a DVD copy really should be a last resort.
Ask the film's distributor for a copy that is already in a suitable, high quality format that can be edited. If there are no longer royalties or licensing fees applicable, you will only pay for the physical media, shipping and handling.

  • Importing from a DVD to FCP

Having lost my original FCP files for my film I'm wanting to import two preview DVDs into FCP and cut them together. I know this is very back to front! but is this possible? If not is there another way to import DVDs and then splice them together. Thanks for any help with this.

I've had mixed results w/ MPEG StreamClip.
If you have a PC w/ a DVD Player... Sony Vegas will import a Non-Copyrighted DVD directly from the Disc. -I guess it's because Sony makes those DVD Camcorders. The option is under IMPORT. Then you select the DVD. (FCP also needs this option)
You can then Edit, Trim, or whatever you'd like to do, then export a QT (or whatever format you need) ****, Vegas is so easy to use you can probably just Cut & Export your piece from there.

  • Import Clips From DVD into FCP

I am working on a 50th anniversary project for a client. They want to include several "home movie" clips in the project. They provided the home video footage to me on DVD. I am looking for the best way to import the material on the DVD into FCP.
I have used Handbrake to capture the video from the DVD and the file is saved in an MP4 format. But when I try to import that file into my FCP bin, FCP tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I think that I can connect a DVD player to my system by running the signal from the DVD player into my DV cam, and then into my MAC, so that is a possibility.
I am just wondering if I am overlooking something that is quicker or easier.
Again my goal is to import material from a DVD into FCP so I can use clips on my timelines.
    Any hint, tips, advice?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Import and edit commercial DVD

Is there any way to import a commercially available DVD Movie and edit it, then burn to DVD. I want to remove some language from a couple of movies. The usual TV versions have this done already but my VCR tapes are far from the quality of DVDs.

  • Importing subtitles into DVD Studio Pro 4 that were created FCP Studio 6

    Greetings!
So in all the DVD Studio Pro 4 documentation, I couldn't find any work flow that allowed you to create subtitles, via *Text or Boris 3D Titles* in Final Cut Pro Studio 6 and then export or import your work into DVD Studio Pro to be used in the subtitle fields... Is that possible?
After painstakingly entering in subtitles for a feature film line-by-line, timing them perfectly to picture and making them look beautiful with crisp-text & a slight drop-shadow... It would be wonderful to import those files (as graphics files? DVD Studio Pro can import those...) in our DVD for release, with optional subtitles-- Instead of making/encoding 2 versions; with & without subtitles.
What is the best way to export these files, created for the film subtitling in *Text or Boris 3D Titles* so that we can import them into DVD Studio Pro 4 subtitle tracks... Could they be exported with an Alpha Channel so that the background is transparent? And will this then be excepted into DVD Studio Pro 4 to be placed in the subtitle fields?
Please help us conquer this seemingly-necessary procedure... I would really hate to think that to achieve this task we'd have to re-enter, re-design & re-time ALL subtitles to make our DVD... All of your suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

OK-- I love that I've found a way to answer my own question on this forum (but actually I must credit my buddy James for finding out about 'TitleExchange Pro') It looks pretty cool and should do exactly what I've asked about: Exporting/ Importing subtitles made in FCP to DVD SP...
TitleExchange Pro is a unique tool which makes complicated things simple.
If you ever wished to get your titles out of FCP into DVDSP (or another DVD authoring application), get titles into FCP from another source like DVDSP or STL, or ceate a QT with all your FCP subtitles without the need of rendering (and get automatic selection of language) or just "equalize" your FCP titles TEP will be the right tool.
There's a slight catch but it might be worth it, if this works as well as it states...Cost 135 EUR:) You can download a limited demo version that works for 30 days & 50 titles...If anyone wants to give their feedback on this software, please post it here-- We'd all be interested.
Download & more information about this process at: http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/TitleExchange/
Also, check out this video tutorial on the product... It explains exactly how to do the task-at-hand... http://www.studiodaily.com/main/minisites/finalcutpro/f/mtutorials/6851.html
Hope this finds you all well--

  • Editing material from a commercial DVD

I'd like to mess around with footage from a commercial dvd...in this case a nice quality criterion disk. This is my own dvd and this is strictly for the practice and personal use. How do I transfer the movie to FCP for editing? I've used Handbrake to successfully rip the movie into both Mpeg4 and Avi files (Mac the Ripper is not yet available for Universal). When I file/edit/import/files for either of these formats, I get the following message:
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.
...so the question is, how do I get this to work? Am I formatting all wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for all the postings.
Completely understand about the 1st Problem. I will speak of it no more.
2nd Problem solved...again, by searching the forums and culling, culling.
The solution is to import the original footage from iMovie into quicktime, then open with FCP.
I am, however, running into a problem of rendering that footage. The quick fix is to use "unlimited RT", which allows me to actually view the footage, make my edits, etc., but I will eventually have to render at some point. If you have suggestions, please post...otherwise, I'll probably find the solution searching the forums.

  • Import Stereo From DVD?

Not a commercial DVD...I want to re-import a DVD I edited that was originally imported into FCP from DV tape in stereo.
What kind of cable and what jack(s) do I use on my DVD player to import the audio in stereo? Would a s-cable connected between my DVD player, into my VX2000, and then into firewire to my computer do the trick?

    Gina:
You just can insert your DVD in the computer and extract/re-encode the audio using MPEG Streamclip.
    Hope that helps !

  • Can I import one chapter of a dvd of old family movies to edit or do I have to import the entire dvd first?

I had an old family film converted toa dvd.
I would now like to use one chapter in a project I'm working on. Can I just import the chapter I want or do I have to import the entire dvd first and then edit. It takes so long to do?

    Hi
Most probably not - not at all. I assume that Your DVD plays on any regular DVD-Player and if so the material on it is in a sort of .mpeg2 code and neither iMovie or iDVD can open this so to do what You want it needs to be converted into a codec they can open.
There are no standard way to do this on a native Mac (Yes one might ask why - indeed) so there are ways around this.
I prefer these of two methods
    • connect a DVD-player to a miniDV Camera and copy to tape and use this
    • or - Roxio Toast™ that can open the DVD and back engineer it into streamingDV that both iMovie and iDVD can use.
Best result is if You go directly to iDVD without any editing. But if material needs to be edited using iMovie HD6 or any version of FinalCut will keep quality as high as possibly. Using iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 will result in a quality loss depending on that they can not deliver interlaced video over to iDVD - so they lose every second line in the picture - less sharp result.
    or read my list on
    DVD back for future editing
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a tray-loaded DVD burner/reader
    B. iMovie’08 prob. 09 can import from DVD (homemade without copy-protection)
    C. I prefer one of these two ways
    • Copy to miniDV tape from set-top DVD-player --> Camera -or-
    • Roxio Toast™ - Can back convert to streamingDV for iMovie or FinalCut
    D. Read what Karsten collected.
    DVD back to iMovie.

  • Video and audio files from dvd using FCP

    Hi
Trying to get footage from a dvd using fcp. I can import the clips ok using file >import but they have no audio with them and the audio folder on the dvd is blank...any ideas????????
    cheers

The audio_TS folder is normally blank.
You need to use MPEG Streamclip to get the DVD files to Quicktime.

  • Publishing to DVD from FCP instead of printing to Tape

How would I be able to put my finished timeline to a DVD from FCP rather than print to tape? as I am new to FCP?

Export > Quicktime Movie (using sequence settings)
    Open iDVD
Import > Video (locate your QT file)
    Burn

  • Compress to SD DVD from FCP 7.0

I have a project in FCP 7.0 that is made up of ProRes 422 (LT) footage that I just finished. I'm trying to get this to DVD. The footage is 1440x1080 30fps. Everything looks great in the time line. I've exported it to Quicktime twice using these settings:
    ProRes422 1440x1080 30
    ProRes422 (LT) 1440x1080 30
They both look pretty bad. Lots of jagged edges.
I tried to "Send to" Compressor and used the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes settings for the audio and video. I imported this into DVD Studio Pro and after burning the DVD it's the same thing. Actually before I even import it into DVD SP it looks bad so I guess it's not anything that DVD SP is doing.
The footage is only 16minutes long.
Am I doing something wrong on my export? Do I have to de-interlace something or change a setting? Help would be much appreciated.
    Steve

You could try duplicating that 90 minute preset so you can make a few adjustments. One of the settings I modify in my m2v presets is in the Frame Controls: Resizing Control: Deinterlace. I have that set to Better or Best, depending on the video. I also set the Output Fields: to Progressive. This seems to work well for my DVDs even when down converting from HD.

  • DVD to FCP?

Need to import/capture a dvd (my old demo reel) to FCP3, don't have dvdxdv, still on Jaguar, Apple manual says something about changing it to a QT file but doesn't really explain how?
    G4 Tower FCP3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   Dual 867MHz 512RAM 1x80G/ 1x200HD

So I can't put the dvd in my dvd player on my Powermac?
Yes, you can. And you can play it like a DVD, only you cannot then get that into FCP without third party software like MPEG Streamclip, or DVDxDV or Cinematize.
