Importing a document containing a pdf in a .fm file

Dear all,
I have imported a pdf into a framemaker 9 document and wish to import that document into a new .fm file as an inset. This work but the pdf does not show. Any ideas? Below I will post a screenshot showing the document to be imported.
THX

Pieter,
I have looked at your problem more closely and think I have some answers.
First, you are not clear on what is in the imported PDF. You imply that you want each page of the imported PDF to be a FULL page in FrameMaker. If so, will FrameMaker display ANY of its content on that page? For example, will it display the page number, headers and footers, etc? If NOT, then I suggest inserting the PDF into the PDF created from your Frame book where it is needed.
Therefore, create your Frame book WITHOUT the text inset that has the imported PDF (call the imported PDF, PDF1). Create a PDF of the book, called PDF2. Open PDF2 in Acrobat (you may have to use Acrobat Standard or Professional; I am not sure whether Acrobat Reader can do this). Go to the page where you want PDF1 to be. Then select Document > Insert Pages > From file. In the dialog box, select PDF1 and whether you want PDF1 to be inserted before or after the indicated page, or at the beginning or end of PDF2. Then save PDF2. Thus, you do the merging of the PDFs (really inserting one into the other) within Acrobat, not Frame or some other third party tool. Acrobat is enough.
The above is the way I would do it IF page numbers are NOT going to be a problem. It is the easiest way to do it. You can alleviate the page problem a little bit by splitting the Frame file (the one where the PDF is to be) into two files, the first that is to be before PDF1 and the second that is to be after PDF1. Then in the book file set the second Frame file's page number to begin at the appropriate value, the value that it WOULD be once PDF1 is inserted. THen proceed as above. This means that in the final PDF, PDF1 displays no page numbers, but the page numbers for the rest of the PDF are correct.
Would this be acceptable? Is it clear what I am suggesting you do?
I looked at what you want to do within Frame, and got it do work, but tediously. I imported one page from PDF1 into a Frame file, let it be fm1. But as you stated, the anchored frame has to be the same size as the page. I also discovered that the body text frame ALSO has to be the same size as the page; I am not sure about the latter, because I do not know how to display the imported PDF page outside the fm1's text frame; if you do, please let me know.
I then imported fm1 into fm2 by reference, but in order for the page to display properly, I had to make fm2's text frame the same size as the page. One ends up with anchored frames in text frames all of which are the same size. Very confusing to me.

  • Import multiple records into a PDF document?

I'm not sure I'm using the correct terms, but let me spell out my problem.
I have a PDF document with several text forms named with the same names as columns in an Excel spreadsheet saved into txt format.
The forms are duplicated onto several pages so if there are five records in the spreadsheet, there are five pages in the PDF.
I am able to open the PDF and choose Import Form Data and point to the Excel txt file.
But in the Import Data from Delimited Text File dialog box, I am only able to choose one record at a time.
I was hoping to be able to import multiple records onto multiple pages. This way I could do a bulk printing of the spreadsheet data into the PDF. But doing one record at a time is cumbersome and won't work as we expand the project.
Any clues as to how to do this better?

    John,
I don't have the actual client's data as that is proprietary.
I do have two silly little test files that I put together, but I think you've answered my question.
I've already told the client to use Word (gasp) and Excel with a mail merge and then export to PDF or print directly.
Ironically this could have also been done with InDesign.
But as much as I had to recommend Word, it was nice that the client started out by wanting PDF.

Could you please let me know if you are using the latest version of Reader i.e 11.0.10
Ask the PDF creator or if you are the creator, open the PDF in Acrobat XI (latest version) and choose "File> Save as Other> Reader Extended PDF> Enable more Tools"

I just used PDF Pack to convert a .docx document to pdf format. The document contained a hyperlink to a bookmark within the document. The text converted OK, and the hyperlinked text was underlined, but not active. Clicking on the hyperlinked text did nothing. It seems that internal hyperlinks don’t convert using this software.
    Thanks for any advice

    Hi,
When you export your PDF file to Word file please select .doc format option rather than docx format for MS Word.
    Thank you.

  • Importing word documents - but losing all images which was in it

    Hi,
I am fairly new to Robohelp and recently got hold of Robohelp 8.
I have already written a Help File for my company's recent product, and the help file was in word 2007 with a lot of screenshots of icons, buttons and dialog boxes pasted in it.
On importing the word document to Robohelp, none of these images are being imported and I cannot see any of them in the project view.
I wanted to use the link to word document feature so that i do not have to keep re-importing the document for any changes made - however, because the images are not being imported, i now have to add them manually to the project.
1 - this is tiring and very time consuming
2 - the project files to which i add the pictures are no longer updated from the word document if any of the text changes as the project is preserving the changes i made to the file (which was only adding the image manually). Kind of defeat the purpose of link to the word document.
    HELP
I would really appreciate any help in
1 - How to import a word document containing images (screenshots, icons etc) without losing the images
2 - Keep the word document to update the project even after i add any images to the project manually.
    Thanks
    Nivekz

    Hi again
    Thanks for the clarification.
Okay, so really what you are doing is identical to clicking File > Import > Word Document, because all you are doing by choosing PDF is pre-selecting PDF as the listed file types. Once you change it to point to Word documents it's no different.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Error message on importing "checkmark field contains export value"

This is an example of an error message I receive upon importing my document into FC. "The checkbox field Member Y contains an export value. FormsCentral will record the checked state, but will not include the export value."
I need to know how to fix this.  I am working with a multi-page form where the data input on the first page needs to copy over to the other pages.  Only the checkmarks are affected.  I can find it Acrobat Pro options where it shows the export value for the checkmarks but I need to know what I need to change that field to say in order for my form to work.
frustrated.  I'm wasting too much time on this.

    I have the same problem:
FormsCentral has successfully imported the PDF with the following exceptions:
The checkbox field 10000 contains an export value. FormsCentral will record the checked state, but will not include the export value.
The checkbox field DATA CENTRE contains an export value. FormsCentral will record the checked state, but will not include the export value.
How to solve? Do you send the form to [email protected]?

  • Help with image file names when using Import Word document feature

    Hello,
I am using File >> Import >> Word document into an HTML template.  If the Word document contains images, the images are written to the directory specified in my Site Default Image Folder.  Here is my question: As I was teaching myself the Import function, one time the images were automatically named to match the page name.  So for example, if my page is named Create.html, the images would be named Create_image001.jpg, Create_image002.jpg, etc.  I can't remember how I enabled this feature (or maybe I was dreaming) but if anyone knows how to control the name of the images imported from MS Word, please let me know.  I've searched and Googled for hours and can't find a way to control the image file names.
    Thanks in advance,
    Shellie

I was hoping that this would be fixed in the 10.8.2 upgrade but it has not.  Anyone have any luck?  Earlier today I was trying to write a paper and navigating between 10 pdfs was a nightmare without being able to hover my mouse for the titles like I used to.

  • Is it possible to save my pages documents as editable PDF's?

    Thanks!

one of my professors (from last semester) had a lot of trouble sending pages documents to people who have PC's. How do I save a pages document as a PDF and not as a ".doc"?
Microsoft Word was introduced for Macintosh in 1984. The file format of Microsoft Word is application-dependent, that is, both the author and the audience must acquire the selfsame application in order to see shared files. This is true also of Aldus PageMaker (introduced 1985), QuarkXPress (introduced 1987) and any of a very, very long list of file formats specific to one and only one application.
It became clear to all concerned in 1989-1990 that problems would be produced by interchange of digital documents, if there were no conversion from application-dependent archival file formats into application-independent archival file formats. It also became clear to all concerned that there would be two kinds of application-independent archival file formats.
When laser imaging was introduced, developers of laser imaging systems for photographic preparation of the printing surface introduced preparatory-phase page markup languages which are content-oriented and production-phase page description languages which are appearance-oriented. Initially, both were tied to the make and model of laser imaging system.
Page markup languages for a make and model of laser imaging system (essentially the command syntax for the laser imagesetter) meant that if you coded/tagged for one make and model of laser imagesetter, you could not repurpose what you had coded/tagged for another make and model of laser imagesetter. Clearly, this was uneconomical.
This realisation led to SGML Standard Generalised Markup Language under the governance of the International Standards Organisation. SGML is not perfect, among other things it can let you have what are essentially private characters and if porous memory serves it can let you have several coded character sets simultaneously which is undesirable in a content-oriented format.
The same sort of problem was posed by page description languages the first of which was the command syntax for the raster image processor that ran the Monotype Lasercomp introduced in 1976. Page description languages introduce an x-y coordinate design space that is mapped onto an x-y coordinate user space which is the address space of the raster image processor.
Page descriptions that depended on the command syntax for a make and model of laser imagesetter posed problems for portability and page description languages under corporate governance clustered around the companies in the United States that targetted the market for graphic information processing commonly called desktop publishing.
Hewlett-Packard Printer Command Language was introduced into this market in May 1984 when the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet made it to market, driving a wedge between the IBM Personal Computer and the IBM line of non-impact printers. Xerox Interpress made it from the laboratory into the market with the initial documentation of the model in 1985.
Adobe PostScript and Xerox Interpress are along almost all dimensions the same model, developed by some of the same people. Adobe PostScript made it to market through a contract entered into in late 1984 between CEO Steven Jobs of Apple Computer, CEO Dr Wolfgang K u m m e r of Linotype, and CEO Dr John Warnock of Adobe Systems.
Adobe PostScript and Xerox Interpress both support multiple coded character sets simultaneously, although Xerox Interpress favours XCCS Xerox Coded Character Set which is the conceptual precursor of Unicode. Xerox Interpress in addition has a default metric coordinate system and strict page-independent structure that Adobe PostScript does not have.
At the Seybold Conference on Computer Publishing in September 1989, Dr John Warnock stated that the aim was to be able to send a page description around the world. In order to do this, first, the page-dependent structuring of Adobe PostScript had to be converted into a page-indendent structuring principle suited for drawing pages in any order on the digital graphic display.
But neither Adobe PostScript nor Xerox Interpress, being appearance-oriented page descriptions, had a strong concept of a standard coded character set that structured the imaging process. Adobe PostScript is in fact a strategy to overcome drawing on a digital device with small coded character sets containing incompatible constituencies of character codes.
The Adobe PostScript rasteriser deals with glyph names and not with character codes and some sort of solution had to be sought so that source character information could be synthesised in converting page-dependent PostScript into the page-independent page description model of what in June 1993 was introduced as Portable Document Format version 1.0.
This solution is to try to use font-independent glyph identifiers as glyph names so that the conversion from Adobe PostScript to Adobe Portable Document Format carries forward a clue about the source character information. There is no concept in PDF of page text, as if the source character information were contained in the page description.
This is the core of the commercial conflict between Adobe Systems which is trying to preserve its market share for the Adobe Portable Document Format, and to introduce Adobe PDFXML as a more serviceable and more sustainable solution for computerised full phrase cataloguing, and on the other hand Microsoft XPS XML Paper Specification which does indeed have a concept of page text for computerised full phrase cataloguing.

  • How to add/change Job Options when saving a FrameMaker document as a PDF using Acrobat 9

If you are logged on as a domain user you could have a problem if you want to add or edit .joboption files in Distiller 9 when it is opened by FrameMaker.
After installing Acrobat 9 the action of saving a FrameMaker document as a PDF automatically starts Distiller 9 which then uses the "Job Options" files that are located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings. Unless some changes have been made to the "Security" settings of the "Adobe" folder and the "Adobe PDF" folder under "All Users" it will not be possible to add or edit ".joboption" files in the "Settings" folder located in that "Adobe PDF" folder.
This can be confusing because when Distiller 9 is started separately, from Programs, it then uses the job options located in your own user folder (C:\Documents and Settings\NLPW\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings). In your own user folder (in my case: NLPW) you can add or edit the job option files.
In order to be able to add or edit job option files under "All Users" you must be included in the "All Users" list and have the appropriate "Permissions" security setting. To set this, right click on the "Adobe" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe) and select "Properties", then click on the "Security" tab and add yourself to the list. Finally, (important) check the "Full Control" box under "Allow" in the permissions field. Repeat this procedure on the "Adobe PDF" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF). Now you have the ability to add or edit ".joboption" files located in the "Settings" folder and these will be available when Distiller is started by FrameMaker.

Thank you so much for that tip. I don’t have exactly the same set-up (FrameMaker 8, Acrobat 8 Professional), but changing the permissions as you describe fixed the problem of not being able to save or change Distiller job options which has been bothering me for a while.

  • PDF as a container for PDF files

I have seen some PDF files that appear to be acting as a container for other PDF files. For example, the PDF Reference and Related Documentation ("pdf_reference.pdf") contains "pdf_reference.pdf", "pdf_reference_addendum_redaction.pdf" and a couple of other pdf files. I am new to the PDF specification and cannot find the section of the format specification that explains how this is done. Are these just embedded files? It seems like they are being handled differently as they are shown in an index when the parent PDF is displayed.

    b About Collections (PDF packages).
Beginning with PDF 1.7, PDF documents can specify how a viewer applications user interface presents collections of file attachments, where the attachments are related in structure or content. Such a presentation is called a portable collection. The intent of portable collections is to present, sort, and search collections of related documents, such as email archives, photo collections, and engineering bid sets. There is no requirement that files in a collection have an implicit relationship or even a similarity; however, showing differentiating characteristics of related documents can be helpful for document navigation.
Attachment annotations typically represent files that are embedded in the PDF document.
For more information, see section 3.10.5 "Collection Items" on page 189 and section 8.2.4, "Collections" on page 588 in the PDF Reference, version 1.7. This reference is available from

  • 'This document contains a link to an asset being upscaled'

When opening two separate Muse sites I have received the warning message, 'This document contains a link to an asset being upscaled. You should resize it smaller, or relink to a larger asset using the Assets panel'. However, none of the assets that the site links to have been amended.
Does anyone know why this might be?
    Thanks.

I believe the warning you're referring to is "This document contains a link to an asset being upsampled."
Upsampling refers to the fact the image has been resized to a size larger than it's original pixel dimensions. For example a 72x72 pixel square image may have been placed then resized to 100x100. Such an image will be exported by Muse, but it will not have an optimal appearance in the browser due to being larger than it's original dimensions. (It's been "upsampled.")
In general you want to have all the images in your site be the same size or smaller than the original placed/imported image data in order to avoid upsampling. Slight upsampling can result in an image that looks dull or slightly blurred, depending on the browser being used. A large amount of upsampling will result in an image that appears pixelated in the browser.
This message is a warning. Whether or not the result of the upsampling is acceptable is a judgement call only you can make.
The Assets panel displays an icon next to any image that's being upsampled.
One other case where this will be reported is for any image that is larger the 2048 pixels in width or height. Muse initially limits image data to a 2048 maximum in either dimension. If you have an image that is larger than 2048, you need to select it in the Assets panel, right click and choose "Import Larger Size" from the context menu. This will pull in the additional image data for whatever size the image is in Muse and thus avoid any upsampling.

  • Import Multiple Records to a PDF Form

    Hi,
I produce a separate XML file for every voucher sent to a client on a golf tour.  Using a form created in LiveCycle Designer 8.0 I create a corresponding PDF document for each voucher and import the data using Acrobat XI Pro.
However I need a better solution and came across this
Record-based processing using LiveCycle Output ES | Adobe Developer Connection
but the 'output' requires Live Cycle ES.
I followed the instructions in the above article and modified the form so that the bindings are in place from the XML fields to the form fields,
Essentially I want to create one XML files for all vouchers and then do one import (i.e. a single PDF document with multiple pages) where Acrobat Pro XI identifies each XML 'voucher' node and appends another copy of the form as a new PDF page.  If it makes any difference there is only one form and it is designed to be A4 size.
    Is this possible?
    Many thanks,
    Peter

LiveCycle forms are very different from Acrobat forms. You might get a better response in the LiveCycle forums.

  • How Can I Keep Embedded Documents in a PDF Conversion of a Word Document?

I am running XP and using Word 2010.  I have a document that contains embedded Word documents.  I can convert the document to PDF but I loose the embedded documents when I do.  Is there a way to keep them available in the PDF version?  I can "attach" them, but don't know how to make those attachments obvious to a reader.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Something embedded in a Word file isn't going to migrate to PDF with the Word file's "page content".
If the embedded files are support use Acrobat to convert them to PDF.
    Combine the PDFs.
Configure this PDF to open with the Bookmarks showing.

Edit / add Bookmarks as desired.

    Hello Nik,
Not sure what you are trying to do here and the purpose behind it.
Do you want to upload the file in PDF format in AL11 and want to view it ins PDF format in AL11? If this is the requirement then you can't view a file in PDF format in AL11. Try using SAP standard transaction CG3Z (for upload to application server) and you will see that the PDF can be uploaded in application server but it will not be visible in that format in AL11. Over there it is in binary format.
If however your idea is to upload the content of the PDF to application server and then be able to download it at a later stage - for viewing, email or whatever purpose - then what you can do is to use FM CONVERT_OTF to convert the content to OTF and then save it AL11.
Whenever you want it view or read it then you can read it from AL11 and then use FM CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF to convert to PDF.
Let me know if you took this approach and it worked for you.
    Good Luck,
    Neeraj
