Importing a DVD sound track

Is there a way to import a sound track from a DVD into itunes then copy it to an ipod?

Audio Hijack will work, but it is a real-time process and records all sounds, including system sounds, when recording.
Instead of recording, you can "rip" the audio only from a DVD and convert it to MP3.
It is not a quick process, but it certainly can be done. I have followed this process for several concert DVDs that I own and I am quite happy with the results. Best of all, it can all be done with free software, but there is one small program to buy to give it a more professional touch and amke it much easier on the ears.
First, download OSEx. This will allow you to extract only the audio files from a DVD.
To demux/extract only the audio with OSEx, splitting the audio in one file per chapter (usually equivalent to a song for music videos):
- After starting OSex and inserting your music video DVD, make sure the correct title is selected by clicking on the "TI" button.
- Click on the "VID" button an deselect the video stream(s).
- Click on the "Aud" button and select the appropriate audio stream (usually 2 channel AC3).
- Click on the "Fmt" button and select "Elem. streams."
- Click on the "Seg" button and select "Chapter" to split the audio by track in separate files.
- Click "Begin" to start audio axtraction.
If you have a few songs that span several DVD tracks and have no break in them, you can encode them as one audio track by selecting those tracks together and encoding them as a single selection.
Then, download mAC3dec. This is a program that will convert the resulting AC3 files from OSEx into MP3s. I use the highest bitrate - 320 - so that my audio is as close to the source as possible.
Then - the finishing touch - but one that costs $10.95. It is well worth it. Download MP3 Trimmer. This sweet little program allows you to trim the beginning and ends of files off and even apply a fade in and out without re-encoding the file and eliminating the resulting loss of sound quality. This means that you can cut the applause out of the beginnings and endings of the tracks, and since you can fade in and out, you lessen the "shock" of the breaks in the tracks that can be so annoying.
All in all, it sounds harder than it actually is, but it is well worth it for a whopping $10.95 for all three programs.
BTW, I am not connected with these companies at all and receive no compensation of any kind. It is just a process that I did a lot of research on and came up with these three programs and the steps to create a nice, professional sounding CD from concert DVDs.

You would use a 3rd party application like Audio Hijack to do that, then import into GB:

  • DVD sound track

I am burning DVDs that need no sound.
Can you Burn a disk that skips that part of the encoding?
Just want to speed up the encoding.

Well... that would be a no... and yes.
If there's no audio already in your sequence, then there is nothing for iDVD to encode. If you have audio in your sequence, then there is no way to break it out in iDVD short of going back to your editor (iMovie, FCE, etc) and deleting the audio.
However, for what it's worth, I don't think you will see huge time improvements in the compression. iDVD uses uncompressed audio and I should imagine that the math is near the same with or without.

  • Exporting sound track from DVD to Itunes.

I recently purchased a DVD and wanted to put the sound track on my iPod Nano (4th Gen0. Is there is way of doing this ?

If this is a commercial DVD, it's copyright protected and cannot be copied over to the Nano.
If the soundtrack is available in iTunes, you can download and upload the file to the Nano that way.

  • Can I import and play just the sound track from a video?

I downloaded some video clips with sound and imported them as QT videos into i-tunes - no problem. But how can I now play just the sound track and import it into a music playlist so I can play it on my Ipod in the car? (Or if I put the video on my Ipod - it's a sound only one, not a video one - will it just play the sound track?)
    Thanks

Without knowing anything about the nature of the video files you're talking about, all I can say is that if they contain audio, you can extract it. The process may not be lossless, unless you extract the audio and convert it to Apple Lossless, WAV or AIFF. If your iPod is an older one, you may be limited in the formats you can play.
For a simple way to extract the audio only, you can use the Streaming/Exporting Wizard in VLC. You can also, depending on the format of the source movie, export audio with Toast or even iMovie to formats compatible with iPods.

  • Sound quality afer importing to dvd

after i export my movie to dvd, the fades of the music jumps around or disjointed when the two pieces of music are joined together. When i view it in imovie the sound is perfect. Is there something i am doing wrong? Is there a wrong setting.
    Dan

There are several problems that you need to consider. A mono VCR plays back the sound that is encoded in a very slow moving tape playback. Think of reel to reel tape at 1.75ips. Some stereo material gets lost in this translation. Stereo is recorded at a much higher quality at a faster rate. Think of reel to reel tape at 15ips. Playing back through a HiFi VCR should improve the sound quality. Once recorded to iMovie, extract the sound and adjust it as a separate sound source through Garage Band or other sound processing program. Make sure that it is placed back in the exact location when returning it to your iMovie sound track.

  • PP cs5 wont import mts sound track

On my machine I have a full  licenced copy of Master Colelction CS5 and a trail version (within 30 days) of Production premium cs5.5
If i import a avchd file in MTS format into prem pro cs5, the sound track does not show in the import bin properties etc . Also, if I drag to timeline only the video shows - no audio
This file plays fine (audio and video) in other media players such as VLC and windows media so the file itself is ok
Any clues anyone as to what I should be looking at?
I have imported other files ok, such as .MOV and they are fine
I know cs5.5  trail has certain limitations, I am hoping the install of cs5.5 trial has not messed up my cs5 install

  • Multiple sound tracks on a DVD?

Is there any low cost/free DVD authoring software that would allow me to put 2 alternative sound tracks on a DVD? DVD Studio is out of my reach, especially since I am not sure I will need that functionality again.
Mac software would be preferred, but a PC would work (yech) if it can record a disk image.
    Thanks-

Thank you for all the answers. I have solved the problem with a shareware encoder called FFmpegX.
I had a movie (Battleship Potemkin), and I wanted to add the score that Pet Shop Boys wrote for it, and I wanted to have the original score to be there too, so I could switch between them, depending on which one I wanted to play.
FFmpegX has mux and demux tools, so I created the new sound track in iMovie to make sure it is syncronized with the video, then saved it as an mp2 file, and then used FFmpegX to mux it with the original video. This also allowed me to avoid converting the video between DV and MPEG, so helps to preserve the quality.
The resulting MPEG2 file can be used for DVD authoring in FFmpegX, but it produces really bare bones DVD. I am going to try Toast and iDVD. The tracks are switched by pressing the "audio" button on the DVD player remote, or you can select the track if you use VLC for computer playback. I have not figured out how to swith the audio using the Title menu.
The double video solution is not very desirable, because the movie is over an hour long, and on a single layer DVD I would have to drop the bitrate to half the original.

A few years agao, when I used to make lots of iMovies, there used to be a page on the Apple site where you could download sound tracks that were good for home movies. Does that page still exist? If not, where else can I download background music for free?

  • I loose both sound tracks of the last chapter when burning a movie to a disc in iDVD

I loose both sound tracks in the last chapter when I burn a project to a disc in iDVD. The sound tracks are there if I play the movie in iDVD before burning to disc, but as soon as I try turn burn to disc the original sound track & the sound track imported from iTunes disappears in the majority of the last chapter.
I'am using the latest version of iMovie & IDVD.  The project in iDVD is listed as 96 minutes & 3.9GB & I'am using an LG single sided DVD 120 Min 4.7GB
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi
    May be something here.
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.
    Minuscular - - 176x144
    Mobile - - - - - 480x360
    Medium - - - - 640x480
    Large - - - - - - 720x540    960x540
    HD - - - - - - - - 1280x720
    4. Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    5. Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In
    6. Ed Hanna
Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies — except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format — that I have noticed.
    7. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple’s Disk Utilities application
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

  • Final sound track issue

Using Pre 11, I have completed a wide screen project and exported it to DVD, using suggested AVCHD settings (.m2ts @ 1920-1080i - 30fps)  The final video quality is excellent as far as the images and video tracks go, when viewed on a 60" TV screen.  There is an issue with the actual DVD starting but it eventually works (my next problem to solve)
Anyway, the sound track (music) plays thru all 5 speakers during playback on a Bluray player and therefore the sound is not very good in comparison to what a 2 channel stereo track, typical for music would be, or the playback in the Elements edit window.  It looks and sounds great on a computer that is only stereo, both within Elements and the exported clips to files.
Is there a way to export the video to a DVD this quality, but retain the 2 channel stereo playback?
Or, is the only option to change sound output settings in the Bluray player?
Music source within Elements are Mp3 converted to .wav prior to import.

Thanks for the reply and glad for the opportunity to clarify my view of the Premiere Elements 5.1 situation.
All the burn to of Premiere Elements are for audio as Dolby Digital Stereo.
However, when you get to export to file save to computer hard drive, things can get interesting. You can
find a few opportunities to export certain files with 5.1 channel audio, but not Dolby Digital 5.1 channel.
In the course of looking into Premiere Elements 5.1 channel opportunities, I ran across a way to import a source
with Stereo and export it as 5.1 channel, not just go from 5.1 channel source to 5.1 channel export file.

  • How to put and burn two diaporama WITH DIFFÉRENT SOUND TRACK on one D,V,D

I HAD A BIG PROBLEM! I HAVE MADE TWO chapters DIAPORAMA OF a band realated the history of the band. and i want to put them one one DVD .tHEY HAVE DIFÉRENT SOUND TRACK.
My problem, is when i burn the Dvd only one show ? I use 1 video line and sound track and the second chapter on the video 2 and soundtrack 2 .It d'int make a différence .What did i do WRONG ?

    towline
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    Lots of possibilities.
What do you mean "My problem, is when I burn the DVD only One Show"? Are you saying that instead of having two separate slideshows in DVD-VIDEO, you
have the two running together as one slideshow?
What menu markers (Chapter markers) are using - scene markers? Are there stop markers?
How are your menu menu and scene menu set up?
    One scenario
    Timeline content set up....
Slideshow 1 with a scene marker at its beginning and a stop marker at its end
    a few seconds gap
Slideshow 2 with a scene marker at its beginning and NO STOP MARKER AT ITS END.
(I put that in capital letters because putting a stop marker at the end of the last item of the Timeline 99.99999% of the time creates project failure.)
With this setup, the viewer is greeted by the main menu and selects from Play Movie or Scene Selection.
    a. If Scene Selection is selected, the viewer is taken to the Scene Selection page where he/she picks a slideshow to watch.
Important: If the viewer pick Slideshow 1, Slideshow 1 is played and then it reverts back to the main menu.
    b. In this type of scenario, the Play All Button on the main menu becomes meaningless, since selecting it will play only up to the
stop marker ( end of Slideshow 1) and then revert back to the main menu.
Alternately, you could create a main menu with the Slideshow 1 or Slideshow 1 choice (use main menu markers) and do away with the
scene menu. That sounds abstract as written but I can give you how to on that and give you examples.
First let us see if anything that I have written above has anything to do with what you really asked.
    Thanks. Clarification always available.

  • IMovie sound track

On iMovie, can you play a live music recording keep the sound track playing and add other visuals?
    Thanks

    Hello, songthief!
    Welcome to the discussions!
What format was the commercial CD song? Did it play in iMovie?
You might want to re-record it to get it into a form that iDVD will burn. You can do this several ways. Here are two suggestions:
    1. Import the song into iTunes, then burn it to a CD. Reimport the song from the CD back into iTunes in AIFF, then import it into your iMovie.
    2. Record the song using WireTap Pro and import the AIC file that it creates into your imovie.
    Also, one more tip:
Don't send your iMovie to iDVD from WITHIN your iMovie. Close your finished iMovie, open iDVD, create your project and then drag/drop your iMovie into iDVD's main screen. You will find your movie in 'Media' ->'Movies.' This prevents double rendering of your clips, 'jaggies' in your final burned DVD and other problems.

  • From good iMovie to iDVD sound track not playing (let us try this again!)

There was an earlier problem of this posted here...the question was marked ANSWERED...but didn't solve anything for most of us that replied. So let us take it out for another spin...
Created in iMovie...works perfect in iMovie 6...then SHARE with iDVD. Attempting to preview...no sound track is played/heard.
Can someone let us know what is going on...how to fix...and why we users are forced to be beta-testers for RELEASED software? This problem seem like something that SHOULD have been found, tested and corrected by release date.
This product is wasting a lot of user's time and dvd discs.
    Thanks

This product is wasting a lot of user's time and dvd discs.
Well I can help you stop wasting disks, at least! Use "Save as Disk Image" to encode the project and create a ".img" file. You can test the final encoding by mounting the .img file and playing it with DVD player in your applications folder. If this has sound, then burn it with Disk Utility.
iMovie will sometimes tolerate both 12 bit and 16 bit audio. iDVD won't - it must have 16 bit audio. Check the settings on your camcorder with the problem DV tape in it. If it is 12 bit audio, there are fixes listed here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61636
    http://danslagle.dvmix.com/mac/iMovie/audio/1001.shtml
    http://danslagle.dvmix.com/mac/iMovie/audio/1000.shtml
I know you say it plays fine in iMovie, but these fixes sometimes help files that work in iMovie but don't work right in iDVD.
If none of this applies, please let us know, and as F Shippey said, let Apple know too!

  • Do I need to compress video before importing into DVD SP?

    Hello,
this is probably stupid question, but I would like to know, if I need to compress my video before I import it into DVD SP as an asset. It looks like everyone use Compressor before importing into DVD SP, (setting up number of passes, bit rates and so on), and then they do it again when setting up preferences in DVD SP. (setting 1 pass or 2passes, bit rate values)
So is not the video actually compressed twice? Once in Compressor and once in DVD SP?
And also, what video formats are actually OK to import into DVD SP? (QT, AVI, FCP movie, etc)
Does DVD SP take them all, or does it only have to be QT?
Thank you and I appologize for these novice questions.

m2v will not be recompressed when placed on tracks (though in some instances it may recompress on menus.) Ultimately it is better to compress outside of DVD SP for control of encodes (and making AC3 files) and also some formats may not be supported by importing into DVD SP directly.
