Importing a Midi File into Garage Band 08

HI,
Bear with me as I apologize up front for my pathetic lack of understanding Garage Band (though I can actually read). I have an instrumental-only song in iTunes that I want to use as the background of vocals I want to lay down. (If I could play instruments, I would use those in the program, trust me.) I sing with a band and this would be SO helpful. I even have a Snowball USB microphone hooked up and ready.
I tried dragging the song from my iTunes list and it looked like it was placed in the track, but when I played nothing seemed to happen. (All audio volumes checked in advance.)
Although I may not be Mac-worthy for my ineptness, any help you send would be really appreciated.

drop the file into a blank area of the timeline
Thanks HangTime, a bit embarrassed here. How do I drop the file ?
U mean I open another window using FInder, select the file in Finder & then drop on the timeline ?
Thanks, really appreciate your help.
Cheers

I am new to Garage Band, pardon me if my question is too basic.

I want to put this mp3 file in another track below the track that I am recording the vocal.
How do I import in this mp3 file into Garage band ?
    Thanks

  • How to import midi files into garage band for ipad

I have the newest iPad and installed Garage Band.  I don't have a MAC computer, only Windows machines.  I want to use the iPad to send the midi files to a Roland 150 keyboard to make it play the music.  Is this even possible?  The Roland has Midi In and Out ports and I have the camera adapter kit and a Yamaha UX16 USB to Midi cable.

You cannot export midi files from GarageBand, sorry. You can only share audio files in aac-format or GarageBand project files, and both are not midi. See what is currently supported: http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/1.2/index.html#chsec12c387

Try reposting in the Garageband forums. You can find it at:

  • Can anyone import a midi file into Gb 2.02?

I have tested this on both G5's. I cannot drag in .mid file
cannot do! I even downloaded a midi file from the internet
and ran it thru dent du midi and could not import it into Gb2.02..... if this is true it is a bug noone has reported.
if i cant and you can then i cant imagine why two of my g5's cant do the same task.....
please just try to drag a midi file into GB 202

    eight nine ten...
my midi files are from Cubase SL 1.04 exported midi files created about 3 years ago. They are the number 1 type. They are from sequenced works done over 20 years. They imported perfectly until yesterday. This is duplicated on both G5's! Now i havent tried importing in a month. Files i get off the net are fine. They import nicely. If i take these cubase midi exported files and drag over midi du vent they open up in another folder and each aiff comes thru but these when imported are not the midi info i need.
These .mid files that WORKED since GB2 and NOW DONT drag and drop is the reason for panic. I also dont have QT pro as is inferred in your thoughtful message.
    1. i think i updated QT 7.02 in the last month.
thats the only change i can think, could that be the fault here? this is quite the enigma among other problems.
I reinstalled cubase sl 1.04 and imported these files and
they opened nicely with each track and its own data.
the problem here doctor is that I cannot import them into this infamous GarageBand 2.02
    why buy QT pro?
    what else should i do
    thanks

  • When I drag and drop a wav file into garage band it is rejected. How to imposrt a wav file?

    Hi Everyone,
I want to edit a voice recording, done in WMA format, in Garage Band.
I saw a video in which the fie is simply draged and dropped in the timeline area, and the time line appears. Then youcan edit it.
But when I drag and drop this WMA file into the editing area, it jumps back out to where I dragged it from.
Is there any way to import WMA files intoGarage Band?
    Thank you, Giorafromny

not directly, you'll need to use some software to convert it to a format supported by GB:

  • How do I import a midi file into garageband for iPad?

I have a midi file (with .mid extension) on my laptop.
Can I import it into Garageband on my iPad 2 and if so how?
    Thanks in advance!

Connect your device to your computer.
In iTunes left Pane, click your ipad under Device.  On right Pane, click Movie Tab. Check box Sync Movies, then check the movie you want it to be sync, then click the Sync button at the lower right wimdow.

    No.

  • How to import wav. files into garage band?

I've downloaded some samples for making electric music and they're all wav. files, but I don't know how I can import them into garageband "library" (probably where all the apple's loops are) can somebody please help me???

Which version of GarageBand are you using?
If you want to add samples to the Loop Library, you have to add the sample to a track, and then add it to the loop library. It will depend on your GarageBand version, how to do it:
    In GarageBand 10:  see http://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/#gbndd0009b98
    In GarageBand '11 see: http://help.apple.com/garageband/index.html#gbnda12ebb99

  • Why can I not import aif files to garage band?

Once I have created an aiff file in iTunes, why can I not import those files into Garage Band?  I'd like to be able to edit some of those files.

I go to garage band and click on create a new project, then browse through the finder and files I want to import are all grayed out -- aiff AND wav files.
You first need to create a new project  - in the "new Project panel" select a template (Guitar, piano, ...), not "Open an existing file".
When the project window opens, drag your aiff or wav file onto an empty space in the Timeline, or open the Media Browser from the footer bar in GarageBand and import an aiff song from your iTunes Library.

  • Import midi libraries to garage band

Is it possible to import outsid emidi libraries into garage band?  I want to have individual midi instruments, for instance, a solo cello or solo trumpet, is there a way to achieve this in Garage Band?

The easiest way to extend the range of software instruments in GarageBand would be to buy and install Mainstage 2 from the AppStore (30 US$) . This will include all JamPack and install them for GargeBand as well - the JamPacks bought separately would coast ~500$, so that is really a bargain.
The JamPacks include wide range of additional strings, horns, and other instruments with many articulations, for example:
Alternately you could look at the soundfonts, see HangTime's post here:
How can you add different instruments to garage band

  • I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

  • Can't Import Right Protected AAC songs into Garage Band

I have always been able to take a track from my iTunes library (whether the track was a purchased iTunes or one ripped from a CD) and bring into Garage Band to play with (I'm currently trying to make christmas ringtones for my Droid). All of a sudden, Garage Band is giving me an error code that I can't import songs that are right protected. I just imported (and saved as a ringtone) a song and now, 20 minutes later I can't do it. Does anyone have an answer for me? I appreciate any feedback.

It was never possible to import DRM protected songs from iTunes. The others were probably unprotected songs (which you can buy on iTunes too).

  • Importing .midi files into iTunes library

Hello! Can anyone please tell me how to import .midi files into my iTunes library, then convert those files into .mp3 to burn onto a CD?
    Thank you for your help!

Does this midi file play elsewhere?
I am getting the file from another location on my hard drive, not from a CD.
Doesn't matter. File -> Add file to library will work if the file is compatible.
Also, when trying to change the import settings, it seems to be for importing from a CD, not from another file location.
It is for importing or converting.
