Importing a Png into Indesign

I am trying to import a PNG logo into Indesign and even tried with a psd. Help please!

I am on CS5.5!
All I get when I look for a picture is folders (which are not readable)

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    Hello,
    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.
    Can someone help?

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?

    Re PDFs - actually, I'm working in Acrobat (not just a finalized PDF), and Acrobat does of course allow editing of a sort; I'd concluded that since Adobe is willing to tolerate that degree of editing with its product, it should therefore tolerate moving its native format (*.pdf) into another of its own native formats (*.indd). I see that's a misconception.
    This morning I tried all flavors I could find of getting my Acrobatted content into ID3, including copy/paste, place, and import (from the ID side); none was satisfactory.  Output from Acrobat to Word and then placing Word was fine for English but destroyed the Greek - not just wrong font, but complete gobbledygook and loss of all diacriticals.  Names of fonts don't matter for my purposes; the legibility of the English, and the legibility and tonic accuracy of the Greek do matter. Author of this project is not tech-savvy and is using old Greek system as well; nothing he or i can do to fix that.
    Current plan is to request author to provide me his native files, which will be Mac files.  Am I understanding the Import dialog and your collecitve comments to suggest that with that file resident on my PC (and unopened), I can use the Place dialog, with "Show Options" selected, to get the Mac file into ID?

    My client wants to send me xml text files to import into Indesign for a multi-page publication. I don't have a clue where to start. Can you point me to a tutorial that would help me figure this out?

    Hello Sally,
    First, I have only heard/read good things about the book Steve recommends. It is on my to buy list one day. Been awaiting a long deserved vaction to pick it up to read.
    I approach XML files pretty much like I do any text file I am sent in that I will import or copy/paste a text file into a frame in ID and begin setting my styles. With XML, though, I first clean it up, move closing tags up to their logical close lines, remove spurious codes that mean something in HTML but don't necessarily belong in the XML file (like &#x2019 which is an apostrophe so I do a search and replace. But for &#xA0; which is a non-breaking space I simply search and replace with a regular space in general), and make sure the XML validates.
    Validation is much like making sure an HTML page is formed properly. I use an XML editor (XML BluePrint) and a text editor (UltraEdit) for these tasks. If I had to only have one or the other, I suppose the XML editor is what I would use.
    I always show the import options when I import the XML and make sure that I link to the file.
    So once a sample of the XML is on a page in ID (via File | Import XML), I highlight text within a tag, say like in your example above, the Providor name, and make it like I want and then create a new style. I generally name the styles as per the XML tag. Later on, that makes mapping tags to styles a little easier.
    Once I set up all the styles preliminarily, I map the tags to styles. You can do that either via the Tags palette or via the Structure Pane that will appear once the XML is imported. In both cases, it is found via the flyout menu at the top right of their respective windows.
    After mapping my styles to the tags, I select the root element in the Structure Pane (the topmost element. In your sample above it is "providors" and delete it. This removes the XML in your ID file. But the styles and tags are still present.
    Then I import the XML again and look to makes sure all the tags/elements are styled as intended. I then correct any errors/ommissions. Then...I'll delete the XML again and import the full XML file.
    I can upload what I did with your XML sample above so you can compare it to your source file if you would like. You would then see how/where I moved tags. Now, moving the tags is only "necessary" to avoid all the extra blank paragraphs. That can be accomplished by ID's search/replace, too. But I like to start out with the XML cleaned up, so I take the few minutes to do it.

  • Importing transparent images into Indesign

    Hi guys,
    Just started using Indesign cs6 and for the life of me can not work out how to import transparent pngs. All transparent images I import have their background changed to a white background. The image import options has an option to use transparency information, with either use white back ground (which is selected) or use file defined background colour.
    I assume i should be using file defined background colour but its greyed out. Why is this option greyed out and how can I retain a transparent bg in my image? The image i'm importing is fireworks png file.

    I don't have Fireworks and I haven't made any Fireworks PNG files.
    I'm not sure how they work. But I believe that Fireworks PNGs can contain editable layers for Fireworks use only.
    This may be part of the issue of the transparent background - but as I say I have very limited knowledge of Fireworks.
    What I will say with some degree of comfort is that PNG is primarily a web format - and it's not a print format. Adobe InDesign is a page layout tool intended for Print on mechanical presses - and it's only recently it's been geared towards Web, ePub and  Flash creation.
    Perhaps the Fireworks PNG simply does not work with InDesign.
    Can you save that Fireworks PNG from Fireworks to say a TIF of PSD? Which may be better for importing to InDesign.
    The only other solution I can think of is to open that PNG file in Photoshop and save it as a Transparent PNG from there using File>Save for Web

  • How do I import an index into Indesign for epub and keep the links live?

    What is the best way to import a subject index (the indexer uses skyindex, and has an option to output index links to indesign para numbers), but he currently provides a word file for import into Indesign 5.5 with dead page numbers. We need to retain that for print publishing, but change the index numbers for epub, to links in both directions. Whats the best way to tackle this? I hope someone out there has done this!

    Page numbers do not exist in epub.

    Save it out of Google Images to your hard drive. It'll probably be a JPEG file. Choose File > Place to place the image. To use it as a watermark, it will have to be on a lower layer or lower in the stacking order than other objects on the page.
    It sounds like you could use some help learning InDesign. I highly recommend Sandee Cohen's Visual QuickStart Guide, which is available for every version of InDesign. It's inexpensive and will save a lot of time learning the program:

  • Error importing a PNG into After Effects CS6

    I'm trying to import a .png file into After Effects CS6 (version 11.0.4.2) and keep getting this error message:

    The .png imports fine into After Effects CC so I don't think the file is corrupted or anything like that.  I need to make some motion graphics using Trapcode though and I only have that for CS6 so I'm stuck at the moment.  Why is this happening in CS6?  If there's no solution I guess I'll have to pay for the Magic Bullet upgrade and just do it in CC but it would be great if I could just figure out why this is happening in AFX CS6...

  • Import Excel Curve into InDesign??

    Is there a reasonably simple way to import or place curves created in Excel into InDesign?  My client has created a spreadsheet in Excel, with a series of data points, then generated a performance curve (also in Excel) for some equipment.  It is a standard, smoothed, linear curve created in Excel from the data points.  I don't need the grid, labels, etc, just the curve, so I can make sure the data is accurate in the final InDesign piece.
    I'm using IDCS4 on a Mac, OSX 10.5.8. Any suggestions are welcome.  Up to now, I am drawing them with the pen tool, but accuracy can suffer.

    I have usually saved my excel-stuff as PDF and placed into InDesign... but it´s not editable then... Bob´s suggestion is good if you have to get it in editable form...
    Copy/pasting curves from office has sometimes been little tricky,curves has become clumpy or jagged etc...
    may be those problems are gone with the office 2007...? And you can alway create a pdf in excel, open that pdf in Illustrator and drag your objects to indesign from there...

    Adobe InDesign what version?
    Version 3 introduced improved CJK, including inline input. It should work if you do as you would do in any transfer of plain text: copy from your originating application e.g. Apple Pages, clean (scrub, strip) the formatting by copying into a plain text editor and choosing Plain Text e.g. in Apple TextEdit, copy into the formatting application e.g. Adobe InDesign.
    I reviewed Adobe InDesign 1.5 and was beta tester for Adobe InDesign 2 and 3.

  • Image resizes when imported or placed into InDesign

    I'm having a problem with placing images into Indesign. The problem is random but sometimes when I place an image or drag it from my library into indesign the scale changes. It should place at 100% both horizontally and vertically but not always. when I check the size it may be slightly off either way. These images could be tiff, jpg, or eps files. Is this something that can be fixed with an update?

    Are you saying the image comes in scaled unevenly, or that it comes in at something besides 100%?
    Are there updates for your version that you haven't installed? Since you haven't told us what you are currently using, it's hard to know. The ONLY update I wouldn't unequivocally tell you to install in the 6.0.6 update for CS4. Before installing that you should read the documentation about how it might affect existing files with placed .ai art, and decide if this would be a problem, or a least a greater problem than anything that the patch is designed to fix.

    it was possible with Indesign cs6, but apparently no longer..!?
    ..is there an extension or anything else i could use?

    ..well, the fact that i can install an older Version of id is an releave...!but! the fact that i cannot open .pmd file in id cc is .. in my humble opinion
    a bad sign of things to come.. i mean sooner or later adobe will completely cancel the ability to download/use id cs6 ... and then what?... buy an old version of pagemaker
    or id 1..cs6?
    if anyone close to adobe has anything substantially to say.. please go ahead..!

  • Importing word doc into InDesign

    I am trying to find the best way to get about 250 word pages into 250 InDesign pages.
    Currently I am assuming I have to copy/paste each page by hand. Is there a way to set page breaks in word and have them relate to pages in InDesign? I know that I can Find/Change attributes to batch/automatically apply styles to imported text. My major issue is that each InDesign page has a header, sub header, then 4 - 5 paragraphs with inline headers, so there is a lot of formatting.

    You have to put your custom frame on you master A page. Open your pages pallet. select the master page, create you custom frames on the master page. Select the first frame, click on the little blue box the bottom right the hover you curser over inside the  next frame and it will turn into a chain link icon. Click.
    This will link the two frames together over the left and right pages.
    Now double click on page one in your page pallet. You'll see the dotted frame which means that it on you master page. If you don't? then got to menu View>show frame edges.
    Next
    File> place select the word file
    your curser will load with the word file, hover your curser inside the dotted blue frame you just made on page 1 hold down your shift and click

    I'm doing a complex Indesign file with a link to a Excel file.
    To import the Excel file I have created several tables always using styles (table, cell, paragraph).
    The problem born when I make a correction into the file Excel and I update the link in Indesign.
    The text updated automatically bring a caracther style (the first that I have created).
    I don't want to apply any character style, but I want to maintein the paragraph style that I have applied.
    If I delete all caracther styles the problem is solved, but I need to have caracther styles in my layout.
    Anyone can help me?

    The import facility of Excel or Word Document is only on a PC system of Dreamweaver.
    File >> Import >> Excel Document
    File >> Import >> Word Document
    For mac system I understand this facility isn't there.  What can you do about this?
    1) Get hold of a PC and download a trial version of DW and import the file(s) and you are done;
    2) Ask a friend to do it for you;
    3) Post your excel file online and some nice guy like Nancy, john or Murray will help you out.
