Importing a .psd file - getting weird effects with drop shadows!! HELP!

Hi all,
I'm trying to import a psd file as my site and then animate each page.
I have each page set up as a different layer and am importing each page as a movie clip so  i can animate each one separately.
The problem is that i have some images on each page that have drop shadows ( i have flattened these in photoshop so there is no longer the blending options layers attached). When flash imports all the layers it obviously has all of them visible at the same time initially.
When i then go through and separate each page to show at different points in the timeline, the images with drop shadows are now showing the image that was underneath it on import, instead of the drop shadow. Difficult to explain, but if you imagine a page with a square in the middle. That square has a drop shadow along two edges which is a slight shading. On a different page (on the layer underneath) there is just a big image of the sea (could be anything). When i import them, the page with the square is sitting directly on top of the page with the image of the sea. I separate these in the timeline so they show at different points, but when it's just the page with the square showing (the page with the sea isn't showing at this point), instead of the nice shading for the drop shadow, in it's place is the thin part of the image of the sea that was initially under the shading for the drop shadow....
Can anyone suggest what is happening and why, and how to quickly fix it in Flash. It took me AGES to import the whole site and all the pages, but now all the movieclips are completely useless because all the drop shadows are messed up with the images that were importing underneath them???!
I'm in a real rush here too, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Can't import any .psd files into after effects.

    Hello all.
I was using CS5 master collection without issue, for a year.
Decided to upgrade to the CS6 master collection and that’s when the problems began.
For example, I can’t import any .psd files into AE.
All files are saved in RGB mode.
The previous files were made on CS5.
I made a new .psd file in CS6 with just a couple of layers on it, couldn’t import that either.
I’ve tried Ctrl-alt-shift to delete preferences, that had limited success. I can import a file and do a little bit of work on it but as soon as I close the file down and opened it up again, it does not recognise the .psd file.
The errors I’m getting in AE are many
    For example:
After Effects warning: Reading past end of file
After Effects error: Could not open intro.psd because it is not a valid Photoshop document
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message:<8104><dynamiclink><5>C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS6\Adobe Premiere Pro exe
After Effects error: Not enough memory to initialise PSL
    I have un-installed and re-installed many times.
    I’m using Windows 8, with 32ram. Hard drives C: 100mg, D: 2 Tb
I’ve tried installing on both drives, still the same thing happens.
Does anyone out there in Adobe Land have any ideas?
    Totally confused
    Cheers,
    Gary.

    Hi Arie,
    Thanks for your response.
It actually happens with every .psd file regardless of size or specs.
All the other programs in the CS6 master collection work fine, except for AE and PS.
I tried the small file. Created a small file, 100 px by 100px 72dpi, just with a gradient background. Same thing, not enough memory to initialise PSL.
I got the adobe cleaner, and re-installed on my system (again) .... same thing.
As long as I open AE with doing ctrl-alt-shift every single time or export layers from PS individually I seem to be OK.
The problem is far from solved, so I guess i just have to put up with workarounds.
Thanks for taking the time to respond

  • Imported a .psd file into project - why showing up as a sequence?

    hi everyone
i successfully imported a photoshop file into a project recently, after help from you, and it ended up working fine. I adjusted the size and placement in the viewer and got what i wanted.
i have tried to do it again, with a different photoshop file, however this time when i import it into the browser it appears with a sequence icon, rather than clip icon. so when i double click to open it up and adjust - it opens a new dedicated timeline rather than in the viewer - i THOUGHT i'd done everything the same - but i guess not.
    what did i do different?
    thanks

Its a feature! Not a bug. By importing a .psd file you can play with the layers in FCP. Apply motion features to a layer, fade the layers on and off at different times, or just change the opacity to suit your background. I know several people that create all their lower thirds for a show in one .psd file and then change the info by turning on and off the different layers. The advantage is you can easily maintain control and placement of your graphics. Like the previous responder I personally don't like .psd's in my timeline. I prefer .pict. Probably because when I started editing it was the only choice on a Mac and it allows for an alpha channel. Using alpha or matte channels make the best keys.

  • A problem with importing layered PSD file into Flash

    Hi.
There's a problem with importing layered PSD file into Flash.
If I import a layered PSD file, some part the color of the lower layer is shown at the edge of objects or shadows. Instead, if I crop each layers first and import them, there's no problem.
If the higher layer has brush or transparent effects, it becomes worse.
    Any help with this problem?
    Thanks.

  • I need help with Importing my Illustrator file into After Effects, I'm having problems

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum. I am having a hard time importing this Illustrator file into After Effects. Here's how it is in the Illustrator file
As you can see, I made all the layers separate so then when I import it I can work on each and every one.  (I want them to bloom from the center)
but when I import to After Effects (I ask to import the composition and retain the layers), the size looks completely different:
Then when I drag down the layers folder to the Comp Panel, the layer order starts getting really messed up. Here is what I am talking about
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it? Also how can I figure out how to let the petals boom? I'm thinking of scaling the center larger first and then scaling the petals from there. but first I have to figure out how to get the size distortion and the layer orders right. Thanks.

You need to open the comp not drag layers in a new comp.

  • When using external editor, iPhoto does not re-import the .psd file

    Hi,
I've just started using Photoshop Elements 6 as a more advanced editor in iPhoto. When I do the 'External Edits' wihtout adding layers etc. and re-save as a JPEG then the photo will re-appear in iPhoto as the edited file.
However if I do the external edit and add layers then save as a .PSD, then the file does not update.. I have to save the .PSD file in a desktop folder then import the file after.
Is there anyway to force iPhoto to pick up the .PSD automatically after an update if I save it to the iPhoto library?
    Thanks,
    Glyn

    Glyn:
The folllowing might be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you import a psd file initially then you can edit it via the external editor, with or without layers, and do a normal save and iPhoto will recognize the changes.

  • Word 2003 will not import a .PSD file

    Using PSE5
To my surprise, Office/Word 2003 will not import a .PSD file created by PSE5. I am talking about a simple, Insert, Picture, From File... into an existing document.
Is there a way to make .PSD files compatible with Word? If not, what is the best file format to save in from PSE5 to use with Office?
Additionally, does anyone have a URL that explains the pros/cons of the various file formats (like where they are best used, etc.)?
    Thanks!

I would be surprised if MS Word could handle proprietary formats like PSD. As Ken says, convert to JPEG's. That works fine. I have written many travelogues in Word with JPEG images.

16bit? Pixels extending beyond the canvas? (from a crop with delete unused pixels turn off).  Have you previously been saving PSD files?
IME you sometimes have to tell Photoshop that the first save of a session is JPG, and it remembers from there on.  The way to 'tell' Photoshop that JPG, or PDF, or PNG etc are now your preferred format is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on that format in the Save As drop down list.  So long as the file does not have parameters that your chosen format does not support, then this should work for you.
[EDIT]  Just noticed that you did include 'Crop' in the subject line.  Do you have 'Delete cropped pixels' checked?

Place the PSD (File menu) if you are bringing it into an existing AI document, or simply choose to Open it if you are going to use the document size from the PSD file and simply add to it.

  • How to place multiple images in batch with drop shadow effects on room backgrounds at the same position?

I want to place multiple images of hand paintings with drop shadow effects on room backgrounds to make them look as if the paintings are hanged on the room walls. I know how to do it one by one, but that takes time and I want to do it in batch at once.
I am quite a beginner for adobe photoshop CS6. I belive such an automated task is possible through 'Automated Batch' function and/or 'Create Droplet' function. Kindly share your expert opinion.

If you want to go with Batch I would recommend creating an Action of more or less these steps:
    • set the resolution to the same as the background image’s
    • change the image from Background Layer to regular Layer if necessary
    • convert it to a Smart Object
    • add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the image (do not use Global Angle)
    • place the background image (File > Place …)
    • move it behind the image layer
    • Image > Reveal All
    • make Selection from that layer’s transparency (cmd-click its icon in the Layers Panel) and use Image > Crop
    • select and transform the image layer to fit the intended position
This would naturally work out best if the images had the same size and proportions.
For the reflection on the floor duplicate the image, flip it vertically, move it in position and reduce its opacity to maybe 10%.
Realistically you may have to hide it partially behind the pillows, a Vector Mask would be an option.

  • Lines around image with drop shadow

    Hello,
I am currently using Illustrator CS 5.1 and am having an issue with my PDF files. I have a graphic that I am building and when I import an image, place a clipping mask around it and then add a drop shadow to it, everything works fine and looks exactly as I want it on screen. However, when I save the document as a pdf, a hazy white line appears around the edges of the image. However, the line is not on the clipping mask itself, instead it is on the square edges of the unmasked version of the image. So when I have 10 masked items on the page with drop shadows, I'm getting 10 faint white squares around each of the images which looks terrible. Has anyone else experienced this? Any recommendations/solutions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Wil

Also change your acrobat settings to show overprint preview always.
If this comes back in Illustrator PDFs, Print >> Advanced >> Slide tranparency flattener to raster >> done , then save.

  • Illustrator CS6 crashes using Effect Stylize Drop Shadow. There's a work-around

Illustrator CS6 crashes when using Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow on a regular shape e.g. rectangle created by the Ractangle Tool.
I select the shape, apply the effect and it will crash giving this warning dialog: "The operation cannot complete of an unknown error: [CANT]". Then Illustrator CS6 crashes.
This is the crash report in Windows 7 32-bit:
Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 16.0.0.682, time stamp: 0x4f6e762b
Faulting module name: MMXCore.8BX_unloaded, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f44e8d6
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
The crash happens about 90% of the time.
    Possible work-around:
Since I experienced some strange behaviour of CS6 applications before, I experimented witn running Illustrator as an administrator (elevated privileges). When I do that, I can apply the effect without Illustrator CS6 crashing. Here I go again..elevated privileges (see http://forums.adobe.com/message/4432510) .
I have to admit, this is one of the many strange behaviours in CS6 applications that make their performance and reliability very unpredictable.

Because there's no need to do a "repair permissions" thing, that being a bizarre Apple concept.  In Windows, the software installation neither "sets permissions properly" nor does previously installed software "change your system" (whatever that means).  Windows installation packages run under a special account to copy files into their proper directories without having to "change system properties".  It's all done automagically and managed by Windows, not by individual applications.

Like I said, all of that makes no sense on Windows.

I did rename the Prefs, and AI did re-create it, and the SFW problem I described was resolved.  Great!, I thought, until I closed AI and opened it again -- Boom!  Same problem.
The problems I described happen because software developers (and the Q&A testing teams) have an arrogant attitude -- they think "I'm the King of my computer and, by God, I'm going to run my computer as the most powerful user I can be."  So they do all their work under the elevated privileges of an administrator account, and are completely surprised and clueless when their software fails to run under a standard user account.  (Always running one's computer under the reduced privileges of a standard user account, by the way, is the recognized Best Practice for safe computing; and in these times it is now unacceptable to require elevated privileges to run an application....)

  • Help with resizing and import a .psd file

I have a rather large logo that is a photoshop file. I am trying to scale it down in motion to use on a lower third. when I import the file it is large so I basically drag the handles to resize it. When it gets small the edges are very jagged and lok horrible. Is there something that motion needs to see from the .psd file for a clean import? I have also tried exporting the logo as a smaller file size and the resolution still looks horrible.

encoding is only for character data.  It is not used for byte data.
ARQ requires message level transactions which is not supported in UDP. That is the whole point of TCP.  It can bedone but you have to design a message accounting system. Performance is not an issue because Get-Content would usually rad the whole file
into a buffer and spit it out in pieces. The client would just feed the file to the transport layer so performance for reading the file is not an issue. THe buffer acquisition and design of message accounting is where all performance issues will show up.
In the past the file could be an issue on a large system with slow disks and limited user memory.  We used stream readers because the system gave special attention to stream IO so it would be fast.  Current systems are so fast and so highly buffered
that direct block read is actually more efficient.  If you want to control memory footprint with scrolling then use memory mapped IO.   In general, the Internet is till not fast enough to beat the modern computer so that is not usually necessary
Anyway, good luck with your project no matter what you decide to do.  Remember that encoding is only when you want to translate character data between systems or locales. Unicode to ANSI, ANSI to UTF-8...
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
