Importing Address Book & ical details from old Mac

I have just invested in a new Macbook to replace my deceased G3 ibook.
I tried to use Migration Assistant to get all my data across but it told me there was no OS on the old Mac! Fortunately I could still access the old hard drive and have successfully transferred all my music, photos, movies and a few vital apps.
However, I was looking around my old hard drive and I couldnt find the ical or Address Book data, nor where I should move it to on my new system.
Can anyone point me in the right irection?
Many thanks.
G3 ibook is dead, long live the 2.16GHz Macbook White!   Mac OS X (10.4)

Address Book stores the settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and the data in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/. I believe it’s similar in the case of iCal.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Trying to import address books and templates from old Netscape Communicator 4.8 to Thunderbird. What old version of Thunderbird to use ( new version wont do

Been using Communicator 4.8 for years. Working fine had no reason to change. But now security settings wont work with yahoo pop server.
Want to import my address books and templates to thunderbird.
New version of Thunderbird 31.0 doesn't have import for communicator that old. Earlier versions do.
Figured I'd use old version of thunderbird to import and then update thunderbird to 31.00
Tried thunderbird 3.0 which has importer for 4.73 but getting error message that it is having trouble. Anyone know last version of thunderbird that had netscape 4.8 importer ? Thought maybe a later version would be able to import and then update to newest thunderbird.
    Thanks

1 - there is no importing involved - you NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library
2 - you have to run programs after you download them - go to your applications folder ==> utilities and launch the library upgrader  --  Then launch iPhoto to complete the upgrade

  • Moving Mail, Address Book and Keychains from Old Computer to New Computer

My issue: Moving mail, address book and keychains from Panther (old machine) to Leopard (new machine). Old machine (500mh G4 power pc) will not connect directly via firewire to new machine (iMac intel). So, I have to move the files manually via a firewire hard drive.
I am looking for a document that will tell me exactly which files to move. Can someone please help me find this document? Thank you. Dale
P.S. I have no issues with installing Leopard. I only need to move the mail, address book and keychains from old to new machine. No .mac account is available.

for address book: go to your old mac, launch ab, and go to file>export and export your contacts as vcards, select all cards before that, then bring that export file to the new mac, and launch ab there, then go to file>import as vcards and you should be set as far as contacts are, but not as far as groups if you have extensive groups. that would be the safe option. the other option is to go to homefolder/library/application support/address book and move that folder to the new mac. the only question i have is... is the database structure and files the same between panther and leopard, which is why i suggest the first option of import/export of vcards.
for mail, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/mail and move that mail folder to the new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
for keychain, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/keychain, you want to bring the file that is in that folder to your new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
once that is done, you may have to do some more steps with mail, once you launch mail, such as importing mailboxes. let me know if that is the case.
    hope this helps

  • Importing address book and emails from a PC to a Mac

I would like to get my address book contents from Outlook Express into my Mac Pro's Mail address book.
Is there some easy way to do this? I'm on OSX 1.5.2.
Also, is it possible to copy over my sent items folder from Outlook Express into the Mac?
I have a lot of saved emails in OE that I will need to have access to from the Mac, and I would also like to avoid having to manually redo my entire address book.
Are Safari and Mail the best apps to use on a Mac for email and internet, or should I install something else?
Should I just forget the whole thing and install Win XP on the Mac so that I can use my OE stuff?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

I had no problems by installing Thunderbird on my PC first, and then importing all of my Outlook data into Thunderbird. I then located and made a copy of the Thunderbird Mail file, which I moved to my Mac. I installed Thunderbird on my Mac, and imported the file I moved from the PC. I was then able to use the resulting mail file in Mac's Mail.
It's been several months ago, and my details might not be exact...however, a little bit of messing with it will definitely get the job done. I had about 10 years of data to move.
Regarding contacts, I think I exported a comma delimited file from the PC, which I was able to import into Mac's Address book....it wasn't difficult. Good luck! Bill

  • Retrieving Address book files & emails from old G5 (10.4) to MacPro (10.5)

My G5 died last week - both processors. HDs are OK though and I thought accessing old files would be easy.
I would like to recuperate the old Address book contacts and also my old emails from the old HDs.
Although I can mount them in the MacPro, I can't open the old Address book with Leopard and don't know where they might be in the old system; Same with the old emails. I did save the old email boxes as an mbox file but Leopard won't open it although I can open the old files individually.
    Any solutions ?

    David,
I once had a similar experience with a G5, but I love my Mac Pro 8 Core.
You should be able to simply "transplant" the com.apple.mail.plist (old User Directory/Library/Preferences) and the Mail folder from your old User Directory/Library, as well as the AddressBook folder from User Directory/Library/Application Support and then launch Mail and also the Address Book application, and have everything taken up where you left off, despite the version change. This is best done before every setting up anything in Mail or AB.
    More info, please.

  • Import Address Book after upgrade from panther.

    Hello folks,
A friend of mine recently upgraded to leopard from 10.3.9.
Made backups but can't import her old addressbook files.
The way i told her to do it is just to take the addressbook folder from 10.3.9 and replace it in Users > library > application support in Leopard. This has always worked in 10.4 or from 10.4 to 10.5 but this time it wouldn't.
Any idea's ? She can't go back to Panther and needs those address cards.
    Thanks for the help
    Jay

I figured it would be the same as after an upgrade from Tiger, so i just copied the folder out of Application Support :/
Now that Panther is gone there is no way to go back and export it to vcards or archive anymore.

  • Importing Address Book & Calendar from Palm to Mac

I just got a new MacBook and would like to import my address book and calendar from my Palm to iCal and the Address Book on Mac. I tried unsuccessfully to import my Address Book and Calendar from Lotus Notes for PC and it although I exported it in the formats indicated available on Mac - nothing went into iCal or the Address book and importing it into Entourage was a complete disaster - it created over 285,000 useless records and locked up the Mac. So instead I've now installed Palm Desktop for Mac - and hope that I can sync my old Tungsten C (originally set up and synced for PC). If so, I'd like to export the Address Book and maybe the Calendar from the Palm Desktop to iCal and Mac Address Book. Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Everyone says Macs are easier than PCs and it's easy to bring over your stuff from PC - which has not exactly been my experience. Advice appreciated.

Thanks, I did look at the link. What is not clear to me is whether it can sync the data (address book and calendar - tho calendar is less important) from my Tungsten C that was previously always synced with a PC - to a MacBook now. Any information on that?

  • Can I import address book info from mac 10.5 to 10.7

Can I import address book info from Mac 10.5 to 10.7?   It tells me "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Address Book 4.0.6."

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Try moving just the folder at Mac HD/users/~/Library/Application Support/Address Book from 10.5 to the same location in 10.7.
Or in Address Book on the old Mac go to the File menu and choose Export Contacts Archive, copy that file to the new Mac and in Address Book on the new Mac go to File menu Import, browse to the archive file on the new Mac and choose it.

  • Import address book data from Metadata cache files?

    Hi,
A friend of mine has a PM Cube and the hard drive got some bad sectors. I believe he still had 10.4.8 on it. I was able to pull off most of the data from the bad drive but I have no addressbook.data file. I do have all the cache files in the Metadata folder, is there any way to import these files? The new drive I installed now has 10.4.9 on it.
    Thanks for your help!

    ok, try the following:
    quit ab in leopard
select that address book folder in your old tiger home directory, then bring it to your leopard homefolder in the same location, i.e. homefolder/library/application support/address book
then in that newly moved ab folder locate the following two items and remove them: Metadata folder and AddressBook-v22.abcddb file
then launch ab in leopard and see if that solves your issue
    hope this helps

You have 3 months of care and up to 3 years with paid AppleCare, let them handle it and bring everything in.

Unless you deleted Address Book 6, or restored from a backup made before you upgraded to Lion, Address Book 6 should be on your disk somewhere.  Try to find it with spotlight or by browsing likely folders with Finder.  Also check Trash. If you find other Address Books, using Quick View or Get Info in Finder should show the version number.
Have you ever moved Address Book out of the Applications folder, either before or after you upgraded to Lion?
If you can't figure out how this happened in the first place, I would be worried that other OS X utilities are similarly affected.

  • Import Address Book 4.0.6 into Address Book 4.1.2

My MacBookPro (purchased July 2007, don't know operating system) broke June 2009. Mac store put hard drive in an external case. I'm trying to import my contacts from the MacBookPro external hard drive Address Book 4.0.6 into my new imac desktop Mac OS X 10.5.8.
The new computer will not open the old Address Book at all. Can't read, can't export. The new Addresss Book 4.1.2 will not import or open the Old Addresss Book contacts. I've tried dragging too. I also tried to replace the new Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder with the old one from the external hard drive. Any ideas?

The new computer will not open the old Address Book at all. Can't read, can't export.
That's to be expected. Address Book 4.0.6 requires Mac OS X 10.4.x, so if you're not running that, you can't open it and export the contacts.
You need to install 10.4.x, open Address Book 4.0.6, export all the contacts as a single vCard file, then on a Mac with 10.5.8 installed, open Address Book 4.1.2, then drag & drop the vCard file onto the open Address Book window to import those contacts.

  • How to sync Address Book, iCal, Bookmarks

How to sync Address Book, iCal, Bookmarks between my iMac and Macbook?

    {quote:title=Julian Wright wrote:}Do you expect everything to be free?{quote}
Geez, ya big meanie, give the guy a break. Not everyone wants to spend $50 on a syncing solution! He just asked a question, and you heap attitude on him about his finances. Not your business!
5480, syncing that information between two Macs is both easy and tricky at the same time. It’s easy because you really can just copy the files back and forth. But it can get tricky if, for instance, you were to change information on both sides. Then you’ve got two different versions! The general solution to this is to be pretty careful about only changing data on one side at a time. If you add some contacts on one side, don’t go working in Address Book on the other side until you’ve copied the new info over.
“Exporting” the data, burning to CD, and then importing it on the other Mac would be a total pain in the ***, though. Much too time consuming. What you need to do, if you don’t want to pay for a solution (I didn’t for ages), is just learn to hook your computers together on a network, and copy over the relevant files directly (no exporting, no CD burning). Address Book, iCal and bookmarks data is all stored in folders in your Library folder. You just copy it over! Be sure to quit the applications before moving the data.
Where exactly are these files, you say? How do you network? Figuring out the details is your homework assignment, but the method works. Good luck!
