Importing Addresses from a Spreadsheet to Address Book

Any chance of importing a spreadsheet to address book? How do I accomplish this???
Thanks!!!

Under import you should see Text File. That would be what you need to import with.

  • Can I import address book info from mac 10.5 to 10.7

Can I import address book info from Mac 10.5 to 10.7?   It tells me "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Address Book 4.0.6."

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Try moving just the folder at Mac HD/users/~/Library/Application Support/Address Book from 10.5 to the same location in 10.7.
Or in Address Book on the old Mac go to the File menu and choose Export Contacts Archive, copy that file to the new Mac and in Address Book on the new Mac go to File menu Import, browse to the archive file on the new Mac and choose it.

  • Imported Address Book not linking - when typing, results are red

    OS - Windows Vista
    Thunderbird Version 24.6.6
Issue: Address book was imported into Mozilla from Windows Live Mail 2006. When trying to send an email, even though the contacts are listed in the address book, when typing them out in a new email, they are still flashing up in red.
Troubleshooting performed: Composed new mail, typed out email manually - this added to address book. There were four copies of the address book listed, deleted the duplicates and migrated the addresses from the imported book to Personal Address Book. Still not working. Opened Address book and selected contact, attempted to compose mail to selected contact, failed. Checked Address Book entries - found that the entries didn't import properly into the following fields:
First, Last, Email - rather they got imported as Display Name, Nickname (with nickname being the email address)
Solution: Went into each contact, and modified them by moving the 'nickname' (which contained the email address) to the 'email address' field. Now able to send emails through to the contact.
    Questions:
    1) When importing the Address from Windows Live Mail - how can we stop it from importing/mapping the email address field into the nickname field?
    2) Is there a faster way to update all the contacts to copy across from Nickname field to the Email field?
    Thanks,
    Angela

If you import via CSV fie, you should be shown a dialog that asks you to re-sort address book fields so the fields in the imported address book correspond with those in Thunderbird's Address Book.
    Did this not happen?
See "From somewhere else to Thunderbird:" here:
    http://www.ramsden.org.uk/11_Thunderbird_Settings_and_the_Profile.html
I don't know of any easy way to work directly with the address book file itself; it's not organized in a user-friendly manner internally. These matters are usually best addressed either before importing (i.e. tweak the CSV file in a spreadsheet program) or via the import dialog.
Alternative formats such as vcf or vCard may avoid the need to massage the data, but IMHO are less suited to managing address books. If you can use these formats, this add-on can be useful:

  • How Do I Make Import Address Book Archive Work Properly?

I have several address books archived. I have one for Christmas cards, I have another for my neighborhood watch program and others that I use at various times. Some of the archives were made using Tiger and some I have created in Leopard. When I Export an Address Book Archive it does so without a problem. When I Import one of my Address Book Archives, to replace whatever address book is currently located in Address Book, the import does not work. Once I try to import, I must quit Address Book then reopen it and I still have the Address Book resident that I was trying to replace. The only way I have found to replace the resident address book is to first archive the current book for the sake of having it backed up, then delete all the names in the book by selecting all then deleting by hitting the delete key or by selecting Delete Cards using the Menu. After the names are deleted, then Importing an archive works fine.
Is anyone else having this problem or possibly have a solution to making Address Book work properly without having to delete all the current names before Importing an archive?
Information: I have deleted the Address Book Folder located within the Home/Library/Application Support folders and rebuilt it under Leopard OS and then pasted the names that were resident before deleting the folders. So far, I still cannot get the Import Address Book Archive function to work properly. Thanks in advance for any helpful information or hints.

Ok! Hmm... I indeed have tried to import an archive, did get the message, replaced all and had it working fine for me so it should for you I would think.
Have you tried to log in your computer as a different user, launch AB and try to toggle back and forth between archives to see if you experience the same issue? If not, then it is a user specific issue, if yes, then it may be more a case of app/system issue.
If you are able to overwrite in AB under a different user, then I would suggest you log in back to your main user and repair permissions (applications/utilities/disk utility repair permissions.
As for your use of AB and different archives, I am sure no one is bothered by that. We are all users here trying to learn and/or help others. I would only point out that if you cannot find a solution to your problem, you may want to consider working with AB in a different manner than you have in the past and by your description of usage groups and smart groups will more than handle your contacts while avoiding mixing apples and doughnuts - but I am sure you have thought of that already !!
    hope this helps

  • Imported address book contains six copies of each address

I imported my Outlook Express address book (Address Book.WAB) into TB, but now I have six copies of each address in the imported address book. Deleting the imported address book and importing again only adds another copy of each address. How can I eliminate all the extra copies of each address?

Gosh, after three days cannot anyone tell me how to (COMPLETELY) delete my imported address book so I can start fresh? Each time I think I have deleted my imported address book, I try to import again and the book contains one additional copy of each address. I am up to six copies at present. It seem apparent to me that each time I am not successfully deleting the imported address book

  • Import address book from Hotmail

    Hello,
I have been trying to import my stored email addresses from MSN/Hotmail. I exported them to a flash drive, where they are now in an Excel spreadsheet format. I saved them to a document file on the desktop and then imported them to the address book. I now have the names only, but no email address or phone numbers for the contact list. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.

When you import a text file into Address Book, it's supposed to run through each column in your file to determine what data field it contains. Are you able to specify the columns to use for the email address and phone number? Does the data file contain that information in the first place?

  • Importing Address Book From An Older Version To Leopard

I'm trying to import my address book from my old, G3 iMac running 10.1.5 to my new machine. All my address cards show the .vcf file extension, yet I can't import them. I get an error message that says, "No importable cards found". I tried switching from .vcf version 3.0 to 2.1 with no luck. I tried importing them as a text file, still doesn't work.
Any ideas on how I can import my addresses?

I was able to solve my problem with the help of a friend.
I found the Old Address Book database file under OS 10.1.5:
    Users->myusername->Library->Addresses->Address Book.addressbook
I pasted Address Book.addressbook to the new Address Book running under OS 10.5 in:
    Users->myusername->Application Support->AddressBook
The computer did a little conversion dance and everything appeared just fine.
    Hope this helps others.

  • How do I import Address Book data from an old Mac to a new one?

I just bought a MacBook using OS 10.5.1. How can I transfer the address card data from my old eMac using system 10.3.9? The two machines are currently connected with a Firewire cable, and my laptop is reading the eMac's hard drive.

It's actually very simple. In your old AB under the file menu click "Export Address Book Archive to your desktop. Then using the new system log in to the old via network and move the file from the old to the new.
Then open the new AB and click import AB archive"
    You're done

  • How do I import address book from time machine backup

My address book was populated on an imac running Lion and I used time machine to back up to an external hard drive.
The imac crashed and I've purchased another one running  Mavericks.
How do I import the contents of my address book from the backup on the external drive to the address book on the new imac?
Whenever I try to select or open an earlier version of the address book in the backup applications folder on the external drive, I get a message saying that I can't open the file because it is a time machine backup.
There is also a diagonal line going through the address book thumbnail icon and various other applications in the backup applications folder and I get the same error message informing that these apps are time machine backups.
If you have a solution please be as clear and precise as possible with instructions as I am not a computer boffin.

    Here's the situation:
I have a G4 with Tiger OS that has 2 years of saved emails and Address Book entries. I just got a G5, installed brand new drives, and did a fresh install of Leopard. I did not use Migration Assistant during the install, because I have no router.
Then I connected the 2 'puters with firewire, and started the G4 in Target Mode, and attempted to Import my old mail and Address Book. I diddled around and was able to import my old mailboxes. I did just realize, though, that only about half the emails were imported; there's a huge gap of nearly a year up until I stopped using the G4.
Also, when I go to the Address Book and try to import my old one, it shows up not as a solid icon that I can select, but a ghostly icon, for lack of a better word, and it will not let me select it.
I really thought this should be easier and less painful. I'm open to suggestions, including whether I should try to use the Leopard install DVD to try the Migration Assistant with a Firewire connection or an ethernet cable.
    Thanks.

  • Importing Address Book from Microsoft Outlook Express 5 for Mac (v5.02)

I just made the leap to a Mac Pro 8 Core from a 350MHz G3. I was running 10.3.9 on the G3, but I was still using the old Outlook mail program because I was comfortable with it. Now I can't figure out how to import the address book into Mail 3.3. I know I waited too long to buy a new computer, But I was able to do what I wanted to do with my old machine. (In fact, the G3 was six years old when I went from OS 9.2.2 to 10.3.9. It worked better with 10.3.9 than it did with all the other OS's I ran on it. Try THAT with a PC!!!) So if I'm hosed, I'm hosed, I can live with that, but I wanted to pick the collective brains of my fellow Mac community people before I threw in the towel.

    Sorry - its late
But you still should be able to export a CVS (Excel comma delimited file) - almost any address book can

  • How can I import address book info from old mac to new one?

Just got a macbook, and migrated all the info as per instructions. Now I need to get all the info from my old address book to the new one. Spent about 6 hours today trying to figure this out, and an hour of that was spent on the phone with a friendly but clueless customer service rep. Managed to get all the vcards transferred, but no group info. Since this is for my business, I need to get this taken care of ASAP--- help, anyone? Thanks!!!

Exporting vCards from Address Book partially preserves group information - it puts it in the notes field as Categories, which is not very useful. I suggest you export one group at a time. I don't think you can import directly into a group, so create a group, import the cards for that group, then select all the cards in the "Last Import" pseudo-group and drag them to the appropriate group.
If some of your contacts are in multiple groups the duplicates will be spotted on import. Unless you have hundreds of groups it should not be to much of a pain. Otherwise look at Gwenhiver.net - Applications - Address Book Exporter - it may preserve groups on re-import (but I don't know).

  • How can I import address book from thunderbird on another computer

I just purchased a new laptop and have dowloaded Thunderbird for my e-mail as that was what I was using on desktop. I have 2 e-mail accounts, my personal e-mail addresses came thru with no difficulty however my other account the contacts in address book didn't come thru. So question is how can I get address book imported for this account too. My desktop is Windows XP and my laptop is Windows 8
    thanks for any help

The neat thing to do would be to copy the profile from the XP machine to the W8 machine. This would have transferred your messages, your account settings and your Address Book and much else.
Given that you have set up Thunderbird and have started using it, copying over the profile may not now be terribly attractive for you.
So, instead, you can export and import your Address Books.
On the XP computer, open the Address Book, select an address book (e.g. Personal Address Book), select '''Tools|Export''', select the name and location of a file to contain the exported data, choose LDIF and then Save. Repeat for each required address book. Give your LDIF files simple but meaningful names, such as PAB.ldif and CA.ldif. Don't use, for instance, ''Personal Address Book.ldif'', as this will create a second address book with the same name as one of the defaults and you won't be able to easily tell which is which.
Put the exported LDIF files where the W8 computer can see them, e.g. a USB memory stick.
On the W8 machine, open the address book, Tools|Import and select an exported LDIF file. It will import and create a new address book; you'll probably want to move the Contact data back to the usual address book. You can select all (ctrl+a) then drag-and-drop the imported Contacts to the preferred address book. Repeat for each LDIF file.
Having said that, I don't understand what you mean by "my personal e-mail addresses came thru with no difficulty however my other account the contacts in address book didn't come thru"; unless you have moved the profile folder over, I don't understand why ''any'' contacts should have transferred.
If you have in fact moved the profile folder, then I'm puzzled as to why the transfer of address books has been incomplete. However the export and import route should be able to reclaim the missing address book(s).

  • How can I import address book contacts from 10.2 to 10.6?

I have an uncle who recently had a computer with 10.2 that crashed.  I recovered all his files.  His new computer is now at 10.5 or 6, and will not import old contacts from 10.2.  Anyone know how I can import them?

  • Importing Address Book from XP

I cannot figure this out, and it is really frustraing. I am a new convert from XP to MAC. The problem is my address book in MS Outlook 2000 will not import into my MAC address book, why not? I save as a CSV file when exporting in Outlook, but MAC does not recognize the file for some reason. The weird thing is, that I can export from my Gmail address book into the MAC using the same procedure, but it does not imput all the information such as home address, fax, mobile phone etc. What is going on here? I know I am new to MACs, but I cannot understand what I have overlooked, if anything at all. I am now using my address book as an Excel file on my desktop, and that is not good enough.
If anyone can show some mercy and help out the newbies, that would be great.
    Thanks in advance,
    M&C

This will not be helpful reply, unfortunately--just an example of a similar problem. I was unable to import addresses from a CSV text file. I could open the file and edit in in MS Word and Excel, and Address Book could see and read the file--I used the 'import' function of Address Book and rearranged some of the field mapping, and could click through all the various cards. But, when I clicked the 'Okay' button in the corner of the import window, nothing happened except that the button turned color, from blue to white. No information was imported, no indication appeared that the computer was working on importing anything. Following advice from this forum, I downloaded the address book importer, and that worked fine. But Apple's own import function seems to have a big problem. I just upgraded to a PowerBook G4 after my old Lombard finally conked out. Very exciting to have a beautiful new machine, but man, little problems like the one w/ Address Book make me miss my old computer.

  • Importing Address Book & Calendar from Palm to Mac

I just got a new MacBook and would like to import my address book and calendar from my Palm to iCal and the Address Book on Mac. I tried unsuccessfully to import my Address Book and Calendar from Lotus Notes for PC and it although I exported it in the formats indicated available on Mac - nothing went into iCal or the Address book and importing it into Entourage was a complete disaster - it created over 285,000 useless records and locked up the Mac. So instead I've now installed Palm Desktop for Mac - and hope that I can sync my old Tungsten C (originally set up and synced for PC). If so, I'd like to export the Address Book and maybe the Calendar from the Palm Desktop to iCal and Mac Address Book. Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Everyone says Macs are easier than PCs and it's easy to bring over your stuff from PC - which has not exactly been my experience. Advice appreciated.

Thanks, I did look at the link. What is not clear to me is whether it can sync the data (address book and calendar - tho calendar is less important) from my Tungsten C that was previously always synced with a PC - to a MacBook now. Any information on that?

  • Importing address book and emails from a PC to a Mac

I would like to get my address book contents from Outlook Express into my Mac Pro's Mail address book.
Is there some easy way to do this? I'm on OSX 1.5.2.
Also, is it possible to copy over my sent items folder from Outlook Express into the Mac?
I have a lot of saved emails in OE that I will need to have access to from the Mac, and I would also like to avoid having to manually redo my entire address book.
Are Safari and Mail the best apps to use on a Mac for email and internet, or should I install something else?
Should I just forget the whole thing and install Win XP on the Mac so that I can use my OE stuff?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

I had no problems by installing Thunderbird on my PC first, and then importing all of my Outlook data into Thunderbird. I then located and made a copy of the Thunderbird Mail file, which I moved to my Mac. I installed Thunderbird on my Mac, and imported the file I moved from the PC. I was then able to use the resulting mail file in Mac's Mail.
It's been several months ago, and my details might not be exact...however, a little bit of messing with it will definitely get the job done. I had about 10 years of data to move.
Regarding contacts, I think I exported a comma delimited file from the PC, which I was able to import into Mac's Address book....it wasn't difficult. Good luck! Bill
