Importing Analog Footage into my G5
My apologies, I realize this is not a question specific to FCP but I thought I would post regardless. The insight here is extremely helpful.
I am looking to import analog footage from a HI-8 Camera. How can I import? The camera has RCA outputs.
Thank you
Scott
You need a firewire to analog converter.
Canopus Grass Valley makes a number of them. From pretty inexpensive to more expensive:

Need help importing Hi8 footage into FCE4
Hi all,
I have a Sony Digital 8 TRV310 camcorder. I'd like to be able to import the Sony footage directly into FCE 4 but am having trouble.
I've successfully imported Hi8 footage from the TRV310 into FCE 4 in the past (it's been a couple years) but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it (it had something to do with Easy Setup and choosing 'device control = none' or something like that. I can't seem to find that option anymore and the only 'device control none' is 'DV-NTSC DV Converter' and that selection doesn't work for the import).
Here is the process that I am going through:
1. I hook my Sony TRV310 up to my Mac Pro via a firewire 400 cable, turn the camera on and switch it to VTR (play) mode. I manually cue to the beginning of the footage I want to capture.
2. Before attempting to import Sony footage into FCE 4 I go to 'easy setup' and dial in format=NTSC and use=DV-NTSC then click the setup button. I then go to file-->capture and a small window pops up indicating that capture is being initialized.
3. The the 'capture window' pops up with preview screen indicating that 'preview has been disabled'
4. I then hit the 'play' button in the capture window and then hit the 'capture now' button.
A black window with 'Final Cut Express and Apple logo' pops up for a few seconds, then a warning window pops up which states 'this operation could not be completed as there is no video'.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
DennisSounds pretty close to me.
Try starting a NEW Project the the DV Converter option selected , you may not have initiated the DV Converter option.
Also there is no device control, so the Capture Now will not work, Start the camera manually and use the Escape key to stop capture.

CS3 - Can I Import AVCHD footage into Premiere and if so, how ?
Hello All;
Can you tell me if I can Import AVCHD footage (Like from a Panasonic Professional Camcorder) into Premiere CS3 ? My version doesn't recognize the .MTS files that the camcorder generates. If there is any way to import AVCHD footage, could you tell me how ? Thanks.

Importing DVD footage into HD project?
I have a project shot with the Panasonic AG-HVX200 - we shot 720p 24fps. It looks great.
I ripped a DVD and imported it, and it needs rendering and shows up as a smaller size, since it's SD footage.
If I stretch it, it looks worse than it did to begin with.
Since the DVD looks pretty good when you play it normally on a SD setup, why can't at least that image quality be achieved? Is it possible?
(In case you're wondering: I ripped the DVD without compressing and it's the exact same daa that is on the DVD itself. No copy protection is a factor in this.)
Thanks for any help and advice you can give me...
MacBook Pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.6)When I captured the Digibeta, it was on a different system. It was capturing digibeta on a Avid Nitris Symphony HD using the Avid capture codecs. And it didn't look great. You could tell that it was SD right away. Grainy and pixelated. But we only needed 8 seconds (4 clips) and we treated the rest of the footage to look grainy so that it fit in better.
I wouldn't run the footage into the HVX. Best signal you can get would be S-Video and that is a composite signal.
Transferring to digibeta then uprezzing won't get you better quality, but worse. You will be losing a generation.
Look...the best you are going to possibly get is the DVD rip that you stretch and render. You might try taking it to a post facility and paying tons of money to use a Terranex box, but it still won't be stellar. You have to understand how compressed DVDs are...they are HIGHLY compressed. Blowing that compression up big will not look good.

How Do you import C100 footage into Premiere Pro CC
I just tried importing Canon C100 footage into Premiere Pro CC, but get no sound. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong and I pray I don't have to convert this footage before bringing it in. Is there a workflow anyone can recommend? Do I have to convert the footage first? Thanks, Lucian
Lucian,
PrPro should work natively with the Canon C100 footage ... it works with almost everything out there. And with the C100 shooting MP-4, AVCHD, & H.264, those are all handled easily by PrPro.
My question ... I would surmise (from what little info you include) you are shooting AVCHD? The reason I say this is that format splits audio & video into different files ... so it's a bit trickier to "import" than others that have the a & v in one file. Make sure you copied the whole top-leveL FOLDER and all sub-folders (not just the footage or contents of a folder) from the cam/card into the computer for AVCHD ... and then when you import into a project via the media browser your audio & video should be all connected by PrPro.
There have been numerous threads here where AVCHD users have "lost" their audio, only to find they'd simply left it behind by NOT copying all the folders & subfolders their camera had created. -
How to import analog audio into garage band
I have an iMac with 2.5 GHz Intel Core 5i 8 GB memory OSX 10.7.5 and I am trying to import analog audio from a reel to reel tape deck so I can edit it and burn to a CD. I have a elgato video capture device with RCA female plugs on one side and USB on the other. (I've used this device to import analog video and audio to iMovie and Adobe Premiere Elements). I am told that I could import analog audio to Garage Band to edit and burn , however when I launch Garage Band I am not sure what part of the program I should be selecting and how to go about importing the analog audio. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"File Not Supported" Message when importing AVCHD footage into Premiere on Mac
Hi,
What I am using:
Camera: Sony FS100
Media Codec: AVCHD
Computer: iMac running OSX 10.8.2
Premiere CS6
I have a quirky issue I have been trying to figure out. I just bought a Sony FS100 camera which records footage in the AVCHD format. When I import the "private" folder the camera creates into Premiere, it brings the footage in but always give me this error message: "File format not supported" along with a list of every clip on the card. The thing is, despite the warning, Premiere brings in each clip fine into browser window. I can preview the clips, edit them and export them out of the timeline with no problems that I have seen. Additionally, if I go back to the "File" dropdown and select "Import Recent File", I can select any of the the files individually again and NOT get the error message when I bring in the clips. I have imported from the Private folder amd the AVCHD quicktime inside the Private folder and, when I do, I get the above mentioned error. But if I import any of the .mts folders that Premiere can see inside the AVCHD folder (each .mts folder seems to represent each indvidual clip), they come in perfect without the error message. Additionally, if I locate the folder through the media browser, it brings the clips in without the error message. I can then drag these clips into the Project window like I have been trying to do eith the "import" function. So should I not be using the "Import" function with these files? I want to because that is what I did with FCP? Any help would be much appreciated! The PRIVATE folder contains far more than just the media. Those additional files are what's generated the message.
The proper method here is to use the Media Browser for importing. -
Importing logged footage into Prelude?
I have a project that was partially logged in Premiere CS5.5 and now I would like to continue the process in Prelude for the logged and new, unlogged footage. We only modified a couple of metadata fields (log notes) in CS5.5, but when I try to ingest the files into Prelude, our comments do not show up. Is it possible to import the media already logged with the metadata, into Prelude? If so, how?
Gregneedles27 is correct, comments entered in the "Comments" field under "Premiere Pro Project Metadata" won't appear in Prelude because this metadata is not written into the media files.
However if you put the comments into the Dynamic Media > Comments field this information will be written into the media's XMP and will appear in Prelude. Choose Metadata Display from the Premiere Pro project panel flyout menu then enable Dynamic Media > Comment. -

Importing TV footage into Final Cut
I imported video from a tv show into final cut. When it plays it like stutters... I thought this was just a play back issue and that once I exported it the video ticking would go away but it doesn't. Any ideas on how to fix this?
What format is this TV show? What CODEC? And don't say "It's a Quicktime Movie..." That says nothing. We need to know what TYPE of QT movie. FCP doesn't work with any format you decide to throw at it. It requires that the footage be converted to a few specific Quicktime codecs. And that list can be found in the EASY SETUP menu (in the Final Cut Pro menu).

Trying to import SxS footage into FCP 7
A client of mine gave me a mini G-Drive with a BPAV file of footage from SxS. I downloaded ClipBrowser and got that to work. Then I hunted for the raw footage to import into my system. All I can find is MPeg4s. But they don't preview in Finder and they don't import into FCP. Does it matter that the client is PC based? He formatted the drive FAT 32. I don't have a problem reading the drive. As I said, Clipbrowser works. What am I missing?
Here's what I found that helped me and will hopefully help others in the future. I could not find mention of this in any documentation (very thin on clipbrowser and BPAV) but did find mention of it in an internet search which turned up a Creative COW thread. Here's what I did.
Choose Import XDCAM in FCP. XDCAM Transfer opens up. Go to top menu row and select ADD SOURCE. Direct your choice to the BPAV file in the top tier of your ClipBrowser files. That opens up a visual directory of the clips. Choose each one you want and hit IMPORT at the bottom of the screen. They will then show up in your FCP browser as quicktime files. Then you are are ready to edit as you would normally.
Hope that helps. -
Capturing Analog Footage into CS6
I'm trying to capture Hi8 Camcorder tape footage, through an ADVC 300 Digitiser, but every time there's a break in the footage (i.e. the recording goes to blank tape / 'snow') CS6 stops the recording. I've turned off Device Control, but that doesn't resolve it. In Final Cut Pro 6, you could go into Capture Settings and tell it the input was an 'Uncontrolled Device', and it recorded everything. Is there a way of doing that in Premiere Pro CS6?
I have NOT used either, but many say to try these for SD capture http://windv.mourek.cz/ or http://www.exsate.com/products/dvcapture/

Importing DVcam footage into FCE
Just got a sony DSR PD150 and want to make the most of shooting in 16:9 DVcam mode.
I assume that it should give better results than shooting in plain old DV mode.
What settings do I use in FCE to get this extra qualityness?
At the moment I am importing in "dv-pal 32khz anamorphic", but don't really see any special 'DVcam-ness'
Am i missing something?I assume that it should give better results than shooting in plain old DV mode
You assume incorrectly. Both DV and DVCam are the same codec: DV25. The only differences are tape speed and track pitch ... and DVCam does have locked audio while DV doesn't. The quality will be identical if shot in with the same camera/lens combination.
There is no DVCam-ness.

How do I import avchd sony cx700 camcorder footage into Final Cut Pro?
I've recently bought a Sony CX700 camcorder, but can't transfer the footage using the Log and Transfer window. Does anybody know how to import AVCHD footage into Final Cut Pro?
You use the log and transfer function.

Importing Canon C300 footage into FCPX
So I shot about 100GB worth of footage on a C300. Now, when I go to import the footage into FCPX, I get the message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again."
I've read in other threads that FCPX directly supports MXF files, and that I should just be able to import directly. However, it's not working! Anyone else deal with this or have found a solid workaround??
- FCPX 10.1.1
- iMac OSX 10.9.2, 3.4 GHz i5, 24 GB RAM.Hi Chris, I use C300 footage all the time, FCPx loves it, all you have to do is install the plugin : http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120224_xf_plugin_fcp_x.shtml
after that you should be good to go
