Importing Anamorphic 16:9 video into iMovie

How can I import anamorphic 16:9 video into iMovie?
I tick the "automatic letterbox & pillarboxing" to off
and import.
The resulting video is made into 4:3 format and squashed up!
When I import into iDVD the video is pillar boxed even when selecting widescreen project.
I have a SONY digital 8 camcorder connected to iMac by firewire.
Please Help!

Hello Roller,
iMovie simply takes your footage for what it really is: standard 4:3 with a letterbox.
you could try capturing with a different software like Vidi or BTV Pro:

There is a little droplet that will flag the material correctly once you have it on your Mac. It's called Anamorphicizer and you can find it here:

hope this helps

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • FireWire is the only way to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?

As a followup to my last post a moment ago tonight 1/30/08:
Is it true that I need a FireWire cable to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?
If so, the Apple salesperson is wrong.
He told me last Monday that purchasing the new iLife 2008 (that contains iMovie 2008) would allow me to use my current USB cable.
Given I see NO FireWire port on my new MacBook Pro (bought in 8/2006), I don't see a solution.
Note the camera, an HD camcorder (the Canon HV20) did NOT come with a FireWire cable; it only came with a USB male plug on one side of the cable and the other is a small square-like male plug that connects to a female port on the Canon HV20.
    Solution?
    Thanks for any suggestions, Daniel

The USB cable is for importing still photographs. Not video.
The firewire 400 cable you need is one that goes from the 6 pin full size male connector to the small 4 pin form used for DV.
The cable plugs into the camera in a socket behind a plastic flap near the eyepiece. Its marked HDV/DV. The other end plugs into the MBP on the right-hand side. 4th from the back.

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • Import Edited Video Into iMovie 8.0.5

I have an edited movie that I created on a previous version of iMovie. I saved the movie to mini DV tape. I want to import the movie in its edited version to iMovie 8.0.5. When I import it, it puts the clips out of order, esp transitions and titles. It seems that there must be some timecode in the DV somewhere that iMovie 8.0.5 is using to reorder the fully edited video. The question is then: How do you import a fully edited movie into iMovie without it reordering it into clips. If there is no option to import the clip, then I will have to re-edit the entire movie -- a true waste of time. Please help. Robert.

Hello, Robert, and Welcome to the Discussions,
iMovie 9 (v 8.x) cannot import an earlier version of iMovie and keep its edits. You will get the clips, edited clips, photos, but no effects or titles, and all the transitions will be converted to cross-dissolves.
If you still have the previous iMovie version used to create that movie, you can export it as Quick Time Full Quality and import that QT movie into iMovie 09.

  • DI imported an mpeg4 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and the Precision Editor is grayed out and I can't edit.  Why??

I imported an mpeg34 video into iMovie 10.0.5 and I am unable to edit it.  Precision Editor and Clip Trimmer are grayed out.  Any idea why this is happening?

Did you get any joy with answering this?
My first thought was that maybe when you imported you chose to leave the files  in place rather than copy then to the iMovie library..but I can't see where that option is now.
I too have created a short movie from load f clips..but can't export or share either..the 'Share 'menu is empty..you go to it and no sub menu appears.

It depends on the type of video. iMovie will only import video that it can edit.

  • Importing DivX 4.1.2 encoded video into iMovie HD 6

I had a PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz machine. With that, I could import DivX encoded video into iMovie HD 6. I had installed DivX for Mac 6.5 to allow this import.
I just switched to a new machine, MacBook Pro, Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz.
I migrated over to this new machine using the Migration Assistant.
I just updated the system to 10.4.8 this morning.
When I import the same DivX encoded video into iMovie HD 6 now, the application crashes immediately.
Something did not get migrated properly...it seems.
Interestingly, there are a few video files that I had saved on my old machine using QT 7 Pro (still DivX encoded), and they import just fine on the new machine. I tried resaving the DivX video on the new machine in QT 7 Pro, but this does not rectify the problem. Very odd. I also now can not get QT Pro 7 to export these files as another encoded file. I could do that on the old machine.
I hope someone can provide me with the insight into the plug-in or reloading of something that will fix this problem. Is it compatibility of the DivX codec with the new Intel processor?
    Thanks everyone.

I'm working on a video at the moment and the way I'm dealing with it is with MPEG Streamclip. Hard drive cameras use a different format and you cannot import directly to iMovie. (Looking to go back to Mini DV Tape the way things are going)... Had to pay for MPEG Streamclip but it transcodes back to DV on the fly and then you spend hours importing to iMovie. I use a JVC Emperio hard drive Video camera. There is quite a deal of quality loss during all the various transitions unfortunately. You can also try... *Download and install DVDrop. This converts the .MOD MPEG-2 formatted video into standard Digital Video (DV) for iMovie. (see www.dropdv.com).* (cannot vouch for that one though. I'm going to try this evening. Thanks to Zac.

  • Please recommend digital format for importing video into iMovie.

I have iMovie '09 and am considering a purchase of a new digital camcorder. I want to easily inport video into IMovie for editing and burning DVD's for use on our home player and for importing into Facebook, email, etc. Can you recommend the best digital format for me? Also, if you have any recommended camcorders I would appreciate that too. I'm looking for something portable with High Def and either a hard drive or flash drive memory component (or both-hybrid).

I would suggest that you pick something from[this list|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290]

  • Trouble importing video into iMovie from External HD

I have video from my Panasonic Full HD camera.  I have already transferred the video off the camera and onto an external hard drive.  When I try to import the video into iMovie those files are grayed out.  Does anyone have any idea how to make this work?
It is all my video of my son's first year since birth!

It is very important that when you transferred the video off the camera, you kept all files and folders from the camera. If you did, you can open iMovie and use FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA ARCHIVE and navigate to the folder that contains the contents that you removed from the camera.
In the future, open iMovie and use FILE/IMPORT FROM CAMERA. This will bring up an import screen. There you can click a button that says Create Camera Archive. This will automatically get you all the files you need off the camera, and it gives you a good backup.
You can also import directly into iMovie from this screen.
If you did not preserve the contents of the camera - for example, you just copied the .mts files, but did not copy the rest of the files and folders, you will need a third party app to convert the .mts files so that iMovie can read them. Two apps that people use for this are ClipWrap and Voltaic HD. They are pricey, but if you did not copy the full camera contents, this may be your best bet.
