Importing and Arranging question

If I have an upcoming trip with several cities for several days, I want to import the photos so that it works the best for viewing a slide show during the trip.  If I want the group to be able to view a slide show each night of either that day or the whole trip, how do I import the folders?  I was going to have one trip folder then subfolders for each city.  As such, how can I tell the slide show to include only the non-rejected photos for several cities in the viewing if I want to view more than just the one city?
Thanks

Thank you both for your comments.  I'm beginning to get a better handle.
Let me elaborate or what I already have.  Much like the other post with 72,000 photos, I too have about 7 years of photos arranged in one main folder in the desktop (backed up nightly on-line of course) then within that I have a folder for each year like 2007 and 2008, etc.  Finally within each year, I have a folder for each event named with "yymm " preceding it like "0805 Memorial Day".  This way my wife can find photos similar to being in 3 ring binder on a shelf (even though she demands we have that too).
So I will eventually have one folder called "0909 Africa".
Great. Don't change your folder structure, and don't go moving things around. Make a mental commitment to use Lightroom tools from now on to find things.
So to best use the power of LR (which I have JUST been introduced to within the last week (where have you been all my life?), when I return to the computer at night from a day in the bush and import the photos, I should keyword them like Africa, Kruger, 09/19.  Then if I want my slide show that evening for the group to include just that day  I would filter for 09/19 or I wanted all the Kruger location shots, I would filter for Kruger, etc?  Is this the fastest way to select only wanted slides for a slide show or to be printed, etc?
I never bother adding keywords for date/month/year, because photos have the date and time built in. You can search for photos taken on specific dates in the Lightroom Library search bar (or alternatively, I believe you can choose date as a criteria for smart collections). If the photos were scanned, and then the date and time is not in the file itself, then you could add the date to the file instead of making it a keyword.
You search using the search bar in Lightroom, which you can toggle on and off with the backslash (\) key. There, you can choose to search for text, attributes, metadata or a combination of these. Alternatively, you can set up a smart collection which does the searching as well.
If your search is for keyword only (not other criteria), you can also use the keyword panel on the right. Find the keyword you wish to search for, and if you put your mouse all the way over to the right of that panel a right-arrow will appear, click there.

  • Toast 7 Importing and Editing Questions

My story so far is, I got most of a short project done in iMovie 3.0.3, but one of my songs near the end is hopelessly screwed up by two seconds of phantom sound which can't be seen and can't be deleted. Through trial and error I determined the sound was on the soundtrack, not in the clip.
My question is about importing from more than one iMovie project into Toast 7, and editing the content to be actually burned to DVD.
If I put the song currently being messed up in the order it's supposed to be on one copy of the project, the audio at the end of the project will almost certainly inherit THE CURSE OF THE PHANTOM SOUND.
What if I do that in one copy, but leave it where it is in the other copy? Can I import just the good copies of each song in the project to Toast 7, even though it means importing from two different copies of the project? Or do you have to import the iMovie project as a whole?
If you have to import all of each copy of the project as a whole, will Toast 7 get all screwed up and start complaining before I even get a chance to delete the duplicates, as it would be two copies of things with the same names in slightly different order?
IF I CAN'T DO THIS, it will mean upgrading to another version of iMovie and a whole other set of problems and questions.
Thanks for anything that may help straighten me out or set me on the right path.

To phrase it another way, how much, if any, editing is possible in Toast? It might be simpler to keep both copies the same, put in however many minutes of black space would cover over the bad audio spot, then put the end of the project after that. But in Toast, can I edit the black space down to just the ten seconds I want? Or do I have to burn the whole thing "as is" and then do the editing when I dub from the DVD to the VHS tape?

  • Import and Export Questions

Trying to work out if final cut pro can do what we need. Our requirements are:
    1. To be able to export .avi files with a indeo 5 codec from a .mov
    2. To be able to import a muxed mpeg and export with separate audio and video track. (unmuxed?)
Can we do this with Final Cut Pro?

To be able to export .avi files with a indeo 5 codec from a .mov < </div>
Not without a Macintosh version of Indeo 5 which, AFAIK, does not exist. You would need to go out of the Mac to a windows machine to do the AVI encoding.
FCP is an editor, not a transcoder. For that, you need some other tools.

  • Newby DV importing and organization question - general

    Hi,
I've been reading the forums, watched the tutorials, but still want to get some feedback regarding my understanding of the process and also on what I'd like to do before I get started. I have iLife '08, also with iMovie HD 6.0.4. From reading, it seems that the thing to do is to use iMovie HD 6 to edit and iDVD '08 to burn my final projects. (I can upgrade to iLife '09 if needed.)
I'll be editing footage of vacation, research documentation, and live music performances. I plan to add music, narration, etc., to make travel guides and documentaries. Currently, I have about twelve hours of Mini-DV that were recorded SP on a Sony Handycam DCR-HC90. Most of the time, I shot each tape from beginning to end without rewinding to check results - so the scenes should mostly be back-to-back, right? (What happens to the small gaps from the rare occasions that I did rewind and watch a recent shot?) Some of the audio is 12-bit, some will be 16-bit, some was recorded using a surround-sound mic; what problems will this cause?
I envision making a "video library" of all of my footage so that I can pull scenes into coherent projects. Recording the tapes front-to-back means that the order of scenes relevant to vacation/work/play/locations will be mixed. I would like to import directly to an external drive (LaCie 1T Quad drive - or would another be better?); iLink from camera to computer, Firewire 800 from computer to external drive. (Program on the internal, data on the external, right? Again, I would like to be able to access all of my video footage and pull scenes or parts of scenes into smaller projects.) As I understand it, the scenes will be separated and made into "clips" or Events automatically. Can I make a Folder of these clips and pull individual clips into various new projects? Before I started, the program asked me to name a new project; so, will I have to load all of my tapes into one massive project (e.g., called "film bank" or "video library") which might take a long time to open and be available for editing into new projects? Should I perhaps import each tape into its own project (a smaller library), then open one-at-a-time to pull what I'd like into a current new project?
I'm certain that I'll learn a lot once I get "hands-on" and maybe I just need to start playing. But, if I can pick up some suggestions for organization and saving time (and keeping this process fun!) before I start, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks much for any input!

.. if I want to upload my video to an external hard drive only once, where is the best place for it? In iM09, or iDive, or somewhere else?
    none.
iMHD6 is, as said, 'project centric' - it has to import all needed clips into its project-file; it does NOT allow 'links' as better tools as FinalCutExpress do use (= the clip in the project is just a link o its real, physical location...).
iM09 has by concept a Library, but those 'interlace/skip field problem'; the workarounds known-so-far, as described on my site, or the commercially sold advice to manipulate the moov-atoms (no, no cow-thingie, some.. engineer voodoo) of each mov are - imho - not 'Mac like'; to 'manually' add inbetween-steps is not my understanding of a consumer tool.
your options are, in my belief:
    a) forget the idea of a 'clip pool' and use iMHD6; iMHD6 has a very unknown and never used 'print' feature, to create a fast and simple overview of project's content=clips .. paper&pencil are sometimes better than any software..
    b) use the major advantage of a Lib and live with the quality iM09 allows (= test yourself.. in many cases it is less drama as some complain .. )
    c) purchase $$$ and teach yourself FCE - it allows Library AND perfect handling of interlaced material ..
.. Hoffentlich werde ich 2010-2011 in Erlangen/Nürnberg forschen.
    Erlangen? sounds like rocket-science.. kiddin'!

  • Starting out with FCP - import and setup question

I believe I have some good gear to begin using FCPX.
iMac 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7, 4GB RAM, AMD  Radeon 1 GB, Lion 10.7.2
    Canon EOS 60D Camera
(Have an external drive although it is used for time machine)
    Living in Canada
Would like to start using FCPX (dowloaded yesterday) in a relatively simple way to get used to it in small steps.
Is there a list of attributes and hints that would provide any easy start for understanding the best way to setup the camera, preferences on FCPX, import routine including basic event management etc.  other thoughts like when should I consider an external drive versus using iMac internal drive ould be appreciated.  I have been waching a number of tutorials and reviewing the discussions groups and many of these do get a little complex quickly.  Not worried about the complexity in the future just want to start out simply and then progress over time.  (Not sure I am ready to understand all the codec complexities that get a lot of attention just yet.)
Will keep looking at discussion groups and tutorials to advance my learning although any pointers to well thought out "newbie" information would be helpful (5000 discussions is a lot to go through).  Also do I need Compressor and Motion out of the gate?
    Thanks

4 GB RAM is barely enough (despite what Apple say). FCP X is very RAM hungry.
(Have an external drive although it is used for time machine)
Particularly with an iMac, I recommend you put your Media, Events and Projects on an exclusive, fast external HD formatted 'Mac OS Extended' (not necessarily journaled - it doesn't matter for video).

    Shouldn't present any problems : )
Is there a list of attributes and hints that would provide any easy start for understanding the best way to setup the camera, preferences on FCPX, import routine including basic event management etc.
Depends on  what you want to do - particularly regarding drive space. If you're prepared to spend a little money on external HD space, then I would import all your footage as ProRes 422 - your iMac will find it far easier to edit and play back.
The downside of ProRes is that it takes up between 5 and 7 times more drive space than your (highly compressed) camera footage.
Also do I need Compressor and Motion out of the gate?
No - strictly speaking you don't - but I wouldn't be without either of them.
I don't know the 60D (I have a 5D Mk2) but I suggest the footage might be inclined towards high contrast and sharpening by default (as with the 5D 2). If the menu allows you to reduce the contrast and saturation (probably by as much as it will allow) you will have much more leeway when it comes to colour grading.
The footage won't look so amazing when you first import it, but you can do more with it. On the 5D 2 I get about two stops more latitude with exposure this way.
I also reduce sharpening to about half what the camera default - remember, the manufacturer wants you to be blown away by the first images you get from your camera - so they set the colour, contrast and sharpening at levels which are far too high for good grading.

  • Best app to import and study multiple choice questions.

    Hi,
I'm searching for an app to help study for an exam.
Part of the studying strategy is to study by the previous exams questions. I have those (a lot of them) in text format.
The app would need to have:
    - Support for multiple-choice questions;
    - Easy, fast and automated way of importing the questions;
    Would be nice to have:
    - Ability to include a rich-text comment along with the right/wrong answer;
    - Support for tagging each questions.
I've used the search function and found this:http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1041085 but it's been a while since then.

  • Problem importing and including the subfolders without getting question marks

i am trying to import a folder of vacation pictures. it has 5000 pictures and there are many subfolders. It imports them where i want but it gives me question marks on all the subfolders. And the subfolders are empty even though it tells me how many pictures are in the folder. I right clicked the question marked folders and point to where they are and it just says they are already there and do i want to merge the folders. In importing i told it to include the subfolders. I have tried this twice and each time the same results. Very frustrating to have to scroll through thousands of pictures. what am i doing wrong.

try sync your folders and make sure you are not moving anything externally:
    Synchronize folders
When you synchronize folders, you have the option of adding files that have been added to the folder but not imported into the catalog, removing files that have been deleted, and scanning for metadata updates. The photo files in the folder and all subfolders can be synchronized. You can determine which folders, subfolders, and files are imported.
In the Folders panel, select the folder you want to synchronize.
    Choose Library > Synchronize Folder.
In the Synchronize Folder dialog box, do any of the following:
To import photos that appear in the folders but have not been imported in the catalog, select Import New Photos. If you select Show Import Dialog Before Importing, you can specify which folders and photos are imported.
To remove photos that have been deleted from the folder but not from the catalog, select Remove Missing Photos From Catalog. If this option is dimmed, no files are missing. (You can choose Show Missing Photos to display the photos in Grid view.)
To scan for any metadata changes made to the files in another application, choose Scan For Metadata Updates.
    Click Synchronize.
If the Import Photos dialog box opens, specify the folders and files you want to import, and then click Import.
    also:
Make sure that the option "Library" -> "Show Photos in Subfolders" is enabled. If it is not enabled, an activated folder will only show the photos that are directly in that folder.

  • DRM/MDM Import and Export File types - Question

    Hi Guys,
We have been implementing Hyperion DRM to our existing Oracle Environment for managing the company's sales data which comes from multiple data sources. In my experience and research, I feel DRM is an excellent tool but there are some questions I have in our mind. The following are the few questions that I\we have.
    a) How does the Import and Export of data functionality works in DRM? In this forum, I have found some one saying we can only import the data through flat files, in other words, "text file" with the delimiters [ ] seperated by comma. My question is, Is there any other possible way to import the data, Such as getting the data directly from the database tables? To get the data, Do we need to have any integration points or do we need to use SOAP APIs (& programming)?
    b) While we exporting the data, can we export it directly to the Oracle database tables? What are the integration points needed for this kind of export?
    c) Is there any sample guide or design document available for creating the hierarchy and nodes. I just want to know how the attributes that we have "is transformed" into the hierarchies and nodes in DRM? In the past, I used Essbase, which is integrated with DRM and that process was straight forward since we imported and exported data directly from DRM to Essbase.
I would appreciate any suggestion offered to me regarding the questions posted above.
    Thanks in advance,
    Leo

    Hi,
1.As per my knowledge the Import can be done using Flat files only,we can import the data from Oracle Tables once the structure is ready in DRM.
2.We have an utility called Export to Table(in the last tab when you performing an Export along with Export to File), which requires the DB mapping to be done properly,
    Thanks!

  • A different ESX and REX2 question ;)

    Hi all,
So I have read all the bits about the EXS and REX files, found out why I couldnt import and installed the shared library but I have a bit of a file question if any one wants to take a shot at this.
I am a bit confused at the various import methods for REX files and the associated files that are created so let me try and explain a bit further in a numerical order.
    1. if I just place the REX files I wish to use in a sub directory of the Sampler Instruments folder each loaded REX now created a .EXS version of this but when I look at the EXS instrument list I see both the REX and a copy titled .EXS, is this normal?
    2. If I try and import via edit and REX covert it seems I have no control over where the file will reside and it places the file in the Sapler Instruments root, is this normal and will I need to then go back and place the files where I want then EG: in a sub folder?
    and lastly...
    3. Will only the 1st opening of a REX file place a midi file? if I delete the midi file from the arrange window is their a simple method to get the midi file to produce again?
I hate to ask all these simple questions, but I promise I havce spent time in the reference manual, for some reason anything I need to learn in logic is never explained how to accomplish in the manual, they only discuss what the function does.
Maybe I am not reading the right manual all this time lol?
    Thanks in advance!

    1) Yes it is normal. The EXS opens the Rex file and saves it as an EXS+samples file. As it hasn't touched the original REX file, it's still there in the sample instruments directory. If you don't need it anymore, delete it.
    2) Yep.
    3) The EXS stores the midi data from a rex file. There's an EXS menu command you can use at any time to place the midi data on the current track: Options -> Extract MIDI Regions from Recycle instrument

  • How do I get PSE10 to import and rename files in order?

When I place my CF card into the reader PSE opens and displays all the photos on the card the problem is they are out of order. I take volleyball photos and use the burst often The files are numbered properly by the camera but PSE seems to get them mixed up. When I import and renamer them PSE thakes them in the order they are shown and they are then renumbered out of order causind many shots to be out of order. I have never had this problem before. I have been using PSE 6 up thru 10 now and this is the first time I have had this happen. Last season I wasusing PSE9 and all my bursts sequences are in purfect order.
Am I missing something in the settings?

    Hi,
The problem I have is with the PSE Organizer "Photo Downloader". When I
plug the CF card from my camera into the card reader on the computer the
"downloader" opens up and shows thumbnails of the files on the card. At
this point the files are out of order based on the file numbers applied
by the camera. I.e.: one sequence looks like this-
    11,12,16,15,14,13,17,18; where 12 thru 16 were a burst. Another
sequence- 121,120,125,124,122,123; all one burst. As you can see they
are out of order.  I tried leaving the card in the camera and the same
thing happens. If I view the photos in /on the camera they are in the
right order. What has been happening is that I rename and number the
files as I import them. When that happens the files get numbered in
sequence as to how they are seen in the "downloader"....this means in
the examples shown 16 would become 13; 15 becomes 14 ect. This ends up
mixing up any sequence of shots.
Once I have the RAW files imported I import them to Lightroom 4 to do
most of my processing. Here if I choose to arrange by time created I can
get them in the right order but because the files are rearranged into
the correct order and since I renamed them on importing the file numbers
are now out of order. After figuring out what the problem was I can now
import the files to lightroom without renaming > arrange by time or file
name> rename> and all seems to be OK. My question is I never had this
problem before and it was very nice to be able to rename the files at
import and be done with it.
I haven't had time to check into it but one thing I'm wondering is is
there a way to rename the files at import without changing the file
number? Is there a way to insert the date and text while keeping the
    IMG_Number....i.e IMG001 becomes 2012 09 15_Volleyball_0001 keeping the
original file number and only inserting a date/name? This would solve
the whole problem as I could then arrange by file name and all would be
    well.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

  • IMovie HD (6.0.3) - Export Quality and Editing Question

Hi guys, i wanted to ask two questions. The first is that i wanted to export videos to upload onto YouTube and the best format for this seems to be the CD-ROM format that is available on the version i have, the only thing is my videos still appear low quality and pixellated even though i am editing good quality videos......i was wondering if i was doing anything wrong/or can do something better?
Also, when i am editing, can i place logos or maybe pictures onto the video e.g. with TV channels they have a logo at the corner of the screen. I also wanted to black out text on screen but i don't seem to be able to do that.
    Thanks a lot.

QuickTime has never supported anything more than "playback" of MPEG-1 formats and conversions to QuickTime formats will never include audio.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-1 a "format" created a long time ago.
iMovie 7 can import and convert most MPEG-2 formats (DVD and HD media) and include audio. It also uses QuickTime for the work.
MPEG Streamclip does allow "batch" conversions. Do them while you sleep.

  • What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

    Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!
    1. Follow the advice above. Also use the Media Browser to import the footage in case you have spanned media files. Import files with the Media Browser.
    2. It largely depends on what you wish to ouput to: Blu-ray, web, etc. This FAQ gives the best answer: What are the best export settings?
    3. Use the Replace with Adobe After Effects Composition function.

I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!

    Hello,
I've just finished shooting what I am considering to be my directorial masterpiece.  Shot it on the Canon 5D (1080p, 24fps), and the footage looks amazing.  Now I am ready to start editing and have been using premiere lately, but I have yet to figure out the proper pipeline.  I want to know the best way to retain resolution before I delve into this project.
    My questions:
    1)  What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
    2)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?

  • Performance issue and functional question regarding updates on tables

A person at my site wrote some code to update a custom field on the MARC table that was being copied from the MARA table.  Here is what I would have expected to see as the code.  Assume that both sets of code have a parameter called p_werks which is the plant in question.
    data : commit_count type i.
select matnr zfield from mara into (wa_marc-matnr, wa_marc-zfield).
update marc set zfield = wa_marc-zfield
         where werks = p_werks and matnr = wa_matnr.
      commit work and wait.
    endselect.
I would have committed every 200 rows instead of every one row, but here's the actual code and my question isn't around the commits but something else.  In this case an internal table was built with two elements - MATNR and WERKS - could have done that above too, but that's not my question.
                DO.
" Lock the record that needs to be update with material creation date

                  wa_log-matnr   = wa_marc-matnr.

                  wa_log-message = text-011.
                  wa_log-zzdate  = wa_mara-zzdate..
                  APPEND wa_log TO tb_log.
                  CLEAR: wa_return, wa_log.
                ENDIF.
" Unlock the record from data base
                CALL FUNCTION 'DEQUEUE_EMMARCS'
                  EXPORTING
                    mode_marc = 'S'
                    mandt     = sy-mandt
                    matnr     = wa_marc-matnr
                    werks     = wa_marc-werks.
              ENDIF.
Here's the question - why did this person enqueue and dequeue explicit locks like this ?  They claimed it was to prevent issues - what issues ???  Is there something special about updating tables that we don't know about ?  We've actually seen it where the system runs out of these ENQUEUE locks.
Before you all go off the deep end and ask why not just do the update, keep in mind that you don't want to update a million + rows and then do a commit either - that locks up the entire table!

The ENQUEUE lock insure that another program called by another user will not update the data at the same time, so preventing database coherence to be lost. In fact, another user on a SAP correct transaction, has read the record and locked it, so when it will be updated your modifications will be lost, also you could override modifications made by another user in another luw.
You cannot use a COMMIT WORK in a SELECT - ENDSELECT, because COMMIT WORK will close each and every opened database cursor, so your first idea would dump after the first update. (so the internal table is mandatory)
Go through some documentation like [Updates in the R/3 System (BC-CST-UP)|http://help.sap.com/printdocu/core/Print46c/en/data/pdf/BCCSTUP/BCCSTUP_PT.pdf]
