Importing and Converting AIFF to MP3

Purchased a CD with 12 AIFF files of music. Copied files to USB drive and inmported to iTUNES 8.0.2 and successfully imported files but the artist info and album name are gone. My ultimte goal was to convert from AIFF to mp3 so I could load it on Blackberry Bold 9000 on microSD card. Is there a way to import AIFF files while retaining info on music and save as mp3 files ?

AIFF files have no tagging. This article explains how iTunes remembers CD's - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93952
To be as painless as possible I would import/rip the tunes directly from the CD into iTunes and allow iTunes to go to the internet to fill in the blanks. If you do it this way then iTunes should tag the mp3's.

  • Can't convert AIFF to MP3

Can’t convert songs in iTunes. I have iTunes 7.02. I’ve followed the process as detailed in iTunes help as well as in a “missing manuals” book.
Here’s what I’ve done to try to change a song from AIFF file to MP3:
    1) In iTunes, chose iTunes > Preferences
    2) Chose “Advanced”
    3) Chose “Importing”
    4) Was told to use “Pop-Up” menu to select between: AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless Encoder, MP3, or WAV;
    However, there is no “Pop-Up” menu........never has been;
    So,
I used the “Import Using” window and scrolled to select MP3
    5) Clicked “OK”
    6) In an iTunes Playlist, clicked once to highlight the song I wanted to convert from AIFF to MP3
    7) Went back to Preferences > Advanced to try and click “Convert Selection to MP3”............. But,
there is no such command in the Advanced, Importing window.
Presumably, after you do that (which I couldn’t) iTunes automatically converts selected song to the format I’ve chosen, plays it through while converting, resulting in a duplicate song, only in MP3 format. The original AIFF song is supposed to remain in the Library.
So why aren’t things happening they way iTunes Help and the book I’m using said they would?
Finally, after changing things in iTunes Preferences, how do I leave "Preferences": for example: should it always be left: Import Using: AIFF Encoder and Setting: Automatic?
My iMac specs should be listed below.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

    hi nemateoz,
    here are some clarifications;
"However, there is no “Pop-Up” menu."
    correct, its a drop-down list.
"Went back to Preferences > Advanced to try and click “Convert Selection to MP3"."
no, this option isn't located in the Advanced tab from the iTunes preferences but in the menu "Advanced" of iTunes (as Files, Edit, etc). This may be confusing thaugh.
"The original AIFF song is supposed to remain in the Library."
Correct; files will be duplicated. if you want to sort them easily, right click on any colum title of your library view and select "Genre". this will add a colum showing the file genre (aiff, mp3, etc) so you can sort them.
"So why aren’t things happening they way iTunes Help and the book I’m using said they would?"
i don'T know where you got your information. maybe you just got confused between advanced menu and advanced tab in preferences.
"Finally, after changing things in iTunes Preferences, how do I leave "Preferences": for example: should it always be left: Import Using: AIFF Encoder and Setting: Automatic?"
depends on what you would like. usually, people will convert aiff files to mp3 or m4a directly from CD; i.e. after inserting a CD, by just clicking "Import CD" button on the lower right corner will import/convert files based on your itunes preferences settings.

  • Convert aiff to mp3

How do I convert a mix which is 29 meg aiff to an mp3 fpr the web i use to be able through itunes but not any more

You can still do it through iTunes - go to Preferences->Advanced->Importing and select MP3 from the "Import Using" poplist. Then load the aiff into iTunes, select it, and select "Convert Selection to MP3" from the Advanced menu.

  • Converting aiff to mp3

I used to be able to convert aiffs and wavs to mp3 in itunes but I no longer have that option in itunes. These are songs that I have made and I want to turn them into mp3 files. I am only given the option of converting these files to Aiff, which doesn't make sense because they already are Aiffs. Thanks.

It appears that even though it defines that as importing from a cd, it affects ALL imports
    It doesn't.
If the files are AIFF, WAV, MP3, AAC or Apple Lossless when adding to iTunes, they will be in the original format.
iTunes will convert in iTunes for WIndows when adding unprotected WMA files.
ALso, you can have it add to files if you hold the Option key and select iTunes menu Advanced -> Convert to {import settings} then sselect files to add.

  • Cannot convert aiff to mp3

I am unable to convert my aiff album into mp3. MY import setting is set to mp3, problme is that 'create to new file' is greyed out and when I select a song and right click, there is no create mp3 version available anymore....its completely missing, the option to do this now with itunes 11...need help.

Make sure the file is playable, and that it really is an AIFF.
The greyed-out effect usually means that the file is not convertible, either because it is not an audio file, or because it is a protected file.  Neither of those would apply to an AIFF.

  • How do I open a protected CCT file and convert it to mp3?

In Windows XP I am using a trial version of Adobe Director to try to extract .cct music files from the free game Quantum Legacy and eventually convert them to mp3s, but the files are "protected and cannot be opened"
I read this link and I made the .exe with the two scripts but it's not working.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/867300
I also found recover-cct.exe but that requires "an Xtra (Flash Movie...) that either does not exist or failed to initialize properly."

You don't have the right to convert any "purchased" file. You can download content (purchases) that can play on a TV by using the Apple TV appliance.

  • Import and convert MPG using vbscript

    Hi,
Does anybody know can I import a video file and convert the footage to iPod compatible format using vbscript?
Can I use the following script to import a mpg file?
    Set iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application")
    Set mainLibrary = iTunesApp.LibraryPlaylist
    mainLibrary.AddFile("Filename")
    Thanks

I found a COM function convertfile, but it doesn't work with mpg files. Does the current version of COM SDK 6.0.2.23 support conversion of mpg?
    Set iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application")
    Status = iTunesApp.ConvertFile("m:\test.mpg")
    Thanks in advance.

  • Need expert advice to import and convert video using Windows COM SDK

    Hi,
Does anybody know can I import a video file and convert the footage to iPod compatible format using vbscript?
I found a COM function 'convertfile', but it seems only work with audio and doesn't work with mpg files. Does the current version of COM SDK 6.0.2.23 support conversion of mpg?
    Set iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application")
    Status = iTunesApp.ConvertFile("m:\test.mpg")
    Thanks in advance.
    Intel   Windows XP Pro

Thanks, but I know iTunes 6 (windows version) has a built-in function to convert a video to a format for iPod G5. That's why I wonder if the iTunes Windows COM SDK has the function call so that I can automatically import my scheduled recording to iPod. I think that's the advantage of iTunes / iPod. Actually I love my iPod G3 and iPod mini, but I don't see a reason for me to upgrade to G5 if it only accept H264 and mp4 because all my recordings (directly from my TV card) are only mpeg format and there is currently no command line tools to convert them for iPod. I know a bit of programming and it is much more conveninent to use scripts to do the mpg -> ipod conversion automatically than doing it manually using GUI programs..
    Thanks

  • I saved my aiff files to ext. storage.  Now how can I retrieve them and convert them to mp3 or wav files?

I was trying to free up space on my internal storage, so when I created files in Garage Band, I thought it would be a great idea to store them in my external hard drive.  However, I now wanted to retrieve my files and burn them to a cd.  When I dragged and dropped them to iTunes, they showed up in my playlist, but when I tried to burn the playlist, I got a message telling me there were no files in the playlist.  Then I looked into putting them back into Garage Band and transferring from there to iTunes.  But do not know how to do this, or even if I can do this.  Do I have to always convert my aiff files to either wav or mpe files before I store them?  Is it a lost cause for me now?  Would really appreciate help on this.

On the external drive, in the Finder, do a get Info on one of those & report size, where, etc.
Also, if you double click on one, does iTunes play it?
You could save some space without losing quality by converting them to Apple Lossless.

  • Old programs...want to convert aiff to mp3.  Urgent!

I have a ibook G4 PC processor OS10.4.11.  I have Garage Band v2.0.2 (50) and iTunes 9.  I made an aiff file tonight that I must convert to mp3 by tomorrow.  I thought I could do it, but it's not looking good.  How do I compress this file to an mp3

The .band file is not an audio file: it's GarageBand-specific and contains the tracks, settings and so on. You need to export from GB as a AIFF file - I don't know how you do this with the earlier version, in mine it's from the 'Share' menu but you will have to experiment.
Once you have exported it it, drag it into your Music list in iTunes.
Go to iTunes>Preferences>General and click the Import Settings button. Select the MP3 converter and choose the settings you want.
Return to the Music list. Select your AIFF file, and from the 'Advanced' menu choose 'Create MP3 version'. An MP3 copy will be made which you can drag out to the Desktop.

  • Convert AIFF to MP3 not working

I want to convert an aiff file into an mp3 file. Here's what I have done: Changed itunes preferences in advanced to mp3 and imported my aiff file into itunes. The file created in my itunes folder is aifc, not mp3. I also tried to drag my aiff file to my library then use the advanced drop down menu to convert to mp3 but the only conversion option says "convert selection to aiff". I have itunes 7.1.1

  • Computer Freezes while importing and converting music

I recently updated to Itunes 10.1.2, and now anytime I want to import a cd to my library or convert a non-aac format song into aac format, my computer freezes. Whats weird is my computer only freezes at 99.9 % importing/converting. i.e If I want to import a cd with 16 tracks, itunes will import the first 15 and then almost finish the 16th when my computer freezes. The first 15 songs are then added to my library and run properly upon restart of my computer but the 16th is not. Converting does the same thing even i convert only one song. I've tried re-installing, and downgrading to an older versions of itunes (9.2.1.5) and the same problem occurs. Any suggestions?

  • Audio sync drift after "live" CD import and convert to 48/16

I shot DV footage on a PD150 cam. The band recorded a CD from sound board to replace the mic audio of the camera. I'm running Final Cut Pro 3, and I have already converted through Quicktime the CD tracks to aiff files running at 48 ( they were 44.1) and 16 bit. The DV cam Orignal audio was also recorded at 48/16. Now when I try to sync the Cd audio (48/16) to the video clips 1: the audio sync drifts off during the song, and though it started right, the whole sync is way off by end. 2: The audio file in the track bar is longer than the video clip in the track bar above. huh? Could it be data rate Audio 187kbps vs. Video 188kbps or should I try and slow/speed up the play rate of either vid or audio. Or is this an impossible meshing of media?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

As Jim says, it's a function of how this was done. Next time you will know to look for ways to avoid the issue. But all is not lost.
I'll give you the skeleton and you can figure it out.
Find exact sync points near the beginning and end of the "video audio" and the "CD audio". Use drum beats you can be sure are the same. Identify them by ear and then by their waveforms, and put clip (not timeline) markers at those points.
Sync up the ones near the beginning exactly. Now go to the other two, find out how far apart they are, and write it down. How? I haven't got all day.
Calculate the time between the 2 markers in the video clips's audio, and between the markers in the CD audio.
Translate both of those numbers into frames.
Calculate the percentage by which the audio is longer CD audio / video audio = X%.
Go into Soundtrack Pro or audio app of your choice and make a version of the CD audio that is sped up by X%.
Bring that back to FCP and replace the version on the timeline with it.
If the markers didn't survive, find the sync points in the new CD version. Line up at the beginning. If the ones near the end now match, everything is done and you can call me "Helpful" and "Solved". If not you can be angry at me or read it again.
    Good luck!

  • Importing and converting WMA to AAC error

I am trying to convert my music files and import to itunes.
When I attempt to bulk transfer I get an error with one track and the entire process stops. When I retry that track individually it does not produce an error.
Why does itunes stop the entire process for the one track that produced the error. Can I somehow reconfigure itunes to skip tracks with errors and continue converting and importing the rest of the tracks. It has become a timely process but it is going to get much worse if I have to do each track individually.
If Windows media player encounters a problem it skips the track and contiues with the remaining tracks.
Not a glowing start for my apple experience.
Thanks in advance for any help that is given

  • Pictures turn to black once imported and converted to DV.....HELP!

Hi. I scanned a bunch of photos (all JPEG's), and imported them in to iMovie HD 6. They all show up fine at first, but as they are being converted to DV (red bar runs across), for about half of the pictures.....the pic disappears, the area turns BLACK, and when played, nothing appears. It makes no sense. They are all on my internal hard drive, and were all scanned using the same setting. Somehow, though, half work in iMovie and half don't. I'm getting very frustrated. Why is this happening and how do I fix it???

I had reduced mine to about 1500 pixels, and they all worked after that. They should really make it so that the program TELLS you that you can't import pics that large. I feel like I'm dealing with a PC here.
