Importing and handling video
I have a (626k) .wmv video/audio file that I am importing
into Flash MX 2004. I make some simple additions to timeline to
create a "loading" and fade out. When I Export the size of the .swf
ends up at around 5-6 megs. What should I be doing different to
make this file much smaller of faster to load.
thanks

Open flash,
File - Import Video
While you go through the Import Wizard you will get to the
point (ENCODING)
where you can chose Advanced Setting, this is where you work
your quality.
Otherwise just reduce it further outside of flash in some
video editing program.
That is all there is to in , especially in flash. No other
way to control the
file size once the file is inside flash.

I can't import and view videos from a camera.
I can't import and view videos from a camera. Even if I open the file and copy the .avi files onto the hard drive. I have tried iMovie, Quicktime, and Flip player. Flip player will open it but I only get the audio, Quicktime freezes, and iPhoto tries to automatically import only to then error saying the files are not compatible.
Hello Hese,
try the following:
1. delete preferences (com.apple.iMovie.plist) and empty the trash
2. repair disc permissions with Disc Utility and reboot your mac
3. use Diskwarrior or MacJanitor for disc clean-up
4. disconnect any other firewire devices
5. take off any non-system desktop pictures
If nothing else helps, you might want to consider resetting your Firewire port(s)

Importing and organizing video clips
I have a question about iMovie. I've made a few movies with it but am no pro. I am really anal about organizing my photos, music, videos, etc. and for that I love iPhoto. If i've just taken some pictures on my digital camera but don't quite have a use for them yet I can just name the roll and save them in iPhoto. With iMovie it's a different story. Whenever I hook my DV camcorder up I have been importing the video i took into iMovie, BUT it makes me save it into a project. What if I don't have a project in mind yet that I want to use this footage for but I just want to get it off my camera and store it on my computer or in iMovie for future use and easy access when I do decide to use that footage in a project or a movie I am creating? Any idea or suggestions?
One way is to do it manually. When you import to iMovie it stores the clips in a folder inside the project called "Media" and the video files are usually Clip 01, Clip 02, etc. Ya not very descriptive names, but you could rename them all after importing to give them meaningful names. If you don't need the project other than to import them, then import, rename, then drag and drop those to your storage folder(s). Trash the project or use it again to import more.
Then you can create a generic folder structure to help you organize. Something like this...
Video Clip Archives
. . . Vacations
. . . . . . Aruba
. . . . . . Disney
. . . Family
. . . . . . Kids
. . . . . . Aunt Martha
etc.
Inside the folders put the clips in. Give them date names or something to help. Like 060798-01, 060798-02 which would be the first two clips from June 7th 1998 and if they were in the Aruba folder then you know they are from a vacation you took to Aruba in June of 1998.
Nice thing about this system is you are not dependent on some application which may or may not be around years from now and in fact you are not even dependent on having a Mac. You could move this folder structure to another computer since the clips are generic DV formatted files, they can be read on other systems.

Trouble importing and playing video in Lightroom 5
I mainly use Lightroom for photos, but I do use it to organize my videos. Lightroom 5.3 on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.9.2.
Videos from all of our iPhones import and play perfeclty.
Video from the Nikon D90 will import sometimes, but will rarely play. You can scroll across the preview icon and see the video, but when you click on to play it, it will only play a few seconds of the video but will continue to play the audio.
I have converted the .avi files to .m4v in order to play in iTunes and Apple TV. I've tried importing the .m4v files to Lightroom as well but always get an error: "Connecting to dynamic link server failed."
Not sure what is going on or what I may be doing wrong. I've successfully imported the videos from the camera to Aperture. Not sure why I can't get Lightroom to work.
Thanks for any help.Exact same problem as well. When I try to import CDs either in iTunes or Windows Media Player I have problems. iTunes will play a track or two, but usually the imports ring in around 755 minutes and change and are corrupt. Windows Media Player has similar issues.
What's strange is that my drive works just fine for burning DVDs, installing software from disc, or watching DVD movies, so I'm a little in the dark. Any ideas? -
Importing and handling progressive (non-interlaced) video...
Hi, have searched around and can't quite find the answer to my problem so I hope somebody can help...
Ive recently aquired a Sony TRV 900 (3ccd) which has a progressive shooting option. Apart from a strange semi-strobing effect on that sometimes occurson fast moving objects this option generally seems fine in good light.
I can import into Final Cut Express (v1) ok, and when I view the clip frame by frame (with the arrow keys) every single frame is clear, crisp, free of jaggies etc.
As soon as I play it back (either as a clip or in a sequence) it appears to be lower quality somehow and there is lots of nasty aliasing or jaggies. Pausing restores the image quality back to normal.
Ive messed with various options available when putting the browser into list view. (PAL or square ratios etc). Even tried exporting a final cut express movie, to view in Quicktime but the quality never matches that of a frame by frame playback in FCE. The exported versions if viewed frame by frame lack also lack the higher quality.
I cannot find any sort of interlace or field options during the import stage but as my 'stills' are great I assume it's either the preview playback or the rendered export at fault, but it's driving me pretty crazy! lol
Even though footage may end up on a dvd at some point (ie. interlaced, right?), I would still like progressive versions to create web versions etc.
Am I completely missing the point here or something?
Hope somebody is able to shed a little light here for me?!
Thanks in advance...As far as i know, Final Cut Express (at least the version i've used which is version 2) assumes you are working with interlaced video and that is that. In Final Cut Pro there is the option to work with progressive footage, but i think FCE just assumes you are using interlaced, and doesn't allow you to change that.
The way you are describing it, it does sound like it is playing progressive footage when in an interlaced mode. A similar thing happens when you play interlaced footage in a progressive mode. It looks absolutely fine when you look at a single frame, but once playing it has lines and artifacts around edges.
I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. I'd like to be wrong though. -
Importing and editing video from DSLRs onto iPad 2
Hi,
I'm reading that it's not possible to import video direct from a DSLR (Nikon D7000 or Olympus Pen, for example) onto the iPad 2, and edit, then export.
Is this the case?
I'd like to be able to work remotely, taking stills and video (with audio) that I can then edit on the iPad and upload.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers!
GregI FOUND A WORKAROUND!!!!! GET ANY DSLR VIDEO UP TO 720p/30fps to work!! W()()T!!! [NO PC REQUIRED AT ALL!!!!]
Check my Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8-crriMQms
YYEEE HHAWW!! -
So I'm shooting some video on a Sony CX430
60fps & 24fps
Both on AVCHD format.
And working out of my MacBookPro
Processor 2.8Ghz (intel core 2 duo)
Mem 8GB 1067 MHz ddr3
1TB hard drive Space (440GB actual free space right now)
im having trouble editing the video. the video becomes choppy and seems to drop frames. its no where near as smooth as when i play it back on the camera itself.
1. should I be transcoding the files as I import them. ?
2. And if so, which option.
I. Create optimize media. Or
II. Crete proxy Media ?
once I have played and done some editing in FCP.X
3. Do I need to buy and use a compressor to get them burned on to a Blu Ray or DVD. ?
4. What is a good Blu Ray burner (external) I should use/buy?#1 on my completely under powered MacMini, 2.26GHz/8GB, I'm noticing, it's faster to make the import/conversion a two-step process: step1 import, step2 after import select all clips, cmd-click, convert. If you import 'over night', I wouldn't care anyhow.....
#2 for stutter free edit, I prefer Proxies; … Optimize is only recommended when you use a seperate, ext. hard-drive, due to sheer amount of data (~220GBs/h)
#3 FCPX allows creation of DVD/BluRays - but: very simple ones, to be exact: two 'designs', just one Project, no fancy menus etc. 'Disk' isn't Apple's preferred delivery format for many years …
#4 I'm not burning disks; LG and Samsung seem to have a good track-record ... -
Need expert advice to import and convert video using Windows COM SDK
Hi,
Does anybody know can I import a video file and convert the footage to iPod compatible format using vbscript?
I found a COM function 'convertfile', but it seems only work with audio and doesn't work with mpg files. Does the current version of COM SDK 6.0.2.23 support conversion of mpg?
Set iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application")
Status = iTunesApp.ConvertFile("m:\test.mpg")
Thanks in advance.
Intel Windows XP ProThanks, but I know iTunes 6 (windows version) has a built-in function to convert a video to a format for iPod G5. That's why I wonder if the iTunes Windows COM SDK has the function call so that I can automatically import my scheduled recording to iPod. I think that's the advantage of iTunes / iPod. Actually I love my iPod G3 and iPod mini, but I don't see a reason for me to upgrade to G5 if it only accept H264 and mp4 because all my recordings (directly from my TV card) are only mpeg format and there is currently no command line tools to convert them for iPod. I know a bit of programming and it is much more conveninent to use scripts to do the mpg -> ipod conversion automatically than doing it manually using GUI programs..

IMovie Problems: Photo import and audio-video out of sync.
Photo import problem:
Some times, I have problems importing photos onto my new project, the photos will appear to be that just one same photo when played. It does not transit to the other photos following the first, it's just stuck on the first. Is this just an issue with iMovie '11? Are there any other ways to resolve this problem?
Audio-video out of sync:
I've checked some other discussions but I'd like to raise this issue again for APPLE. There are problems exporting my 7-minute film - the video and audio go completely out of sync no matter what format I export it to. There are not a lot of clips used. I'm now trying the method to detach the audio files from the video, hopefully it works.
These issues are bothering me, in addition to a failed firmware update on Mac OSX 10.7.2 a few weeks ago. I couldn't open my computer and I had to go to the Genius Bar to have them help me backup my files on my computer and reinstall the whole system again. Anyways, any help to the above iMovie issues are greatly appreciated. Just wish that Apple will address these current issues and not just focus on improving their products with awesome features ._.Hello,
Thanks for the reply, I am using embed code generated with Flash Media Playback, as follows:

Problems importing and exporting video and audio. Photoshop CC OSX
I use the timeline features for animation, but i have been running into some problems on a fresh install of PS CC on a minimac with these specs.
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB
Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F37)
There is no generated program log and the error for every problem i get is the same.
I have also tried deleting the preference file.
"Could not complete your request because of a program error."
So this is if i attempt to import audio using the timeline, (or just using open).
If i go to file>export>render video (no dialog pops up it errors straight away.)
if i attempt to import a video.
These problems all seem related and i'm guessing it could be a hardware incompatability thing, or a lack of native codecs or something silly?
Any one have any ideas?
EDIT:
More info.
encoder crashes on open. So i would hazard a guess that my issues is the media encoder needs to be running for these things to work.

Importing and Using Video from Sony DVD Camcorders
I have a Sony DVD Camcorder (DCR-DVD 92) and I have recently shot a lot of footage which is now on my computer. The file extensions are .BUP, .IFO, and .VOB. I am able to import some of the files into final cut but they are shortened to only a few seconds each when in reality, they were shot for several minutes. Is there a way to make these work or to convert the files so they can be edited in Final Cut Pro 5?
mrescobar 1 1,
You should find that GreatVideo! v1.7 for Mac OS X - 10.4', by Software Architects, Inc., solves your problem. Converts from Sony to Mac readable format.
Come back if you have questions.

Importing and Exporting Video VHS and MiniDV
I just recently purchased an iMac 27-inch 3.1GHz (2TB Serial ATA Drive / 256GB Solid State Drive / 16GB Memory). I am interested in converting my family videos from my Sony camcorder (MiniDV) and VHS/DVD player.
I would prefer not to spend tons of money but I don't want poor quality either.
I have the Adobe Master Collection with the video software components. I can't recall since I am not at my computer if I have Final Cut (maybe it's Aperture I am thinking of). I have Toast Titanium but I would need to upgrade to the Pro version for better video components (but maybe I don't need to use it either).
What are some of the ways I can convert VHS and MiniDV cassettes to store it digital on my iMac or created a DVD disc? Here is a software and device comparison chart with prices http://vhs-to-dvd-converters-review.toptenreviews.com/

Dynamically Importing and Exporting Video in Adobe Air
Hi all,
I am currently working on a project where I want the users to be able to download an application that allows them to be able to upload a video of them playing an instrument, and that also enables them to be able to create sheet music for the music they are playing in the video, and then the application will synchronise the two together and the sheet music will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen in synchronisation with the video that is being played. I then want the application to allow the user to be able to export the new synchronised video out as a video so that they can than upload it onto a website that can be viewed by others. I was just wondering if this would be possible in Adobe Air, or if anyone knows of another piece of software that would be better suited to this. Also if it is possible in adobe air are there any resources that I could turn to that would help me out.
Much thanks,

Importing and organizing raw video footage - options
greetings-
Looking for a better solution, if available, for importing & organizing raw video. I am using imovie for now. Soon to switch to FC express. After much exploring & learning on my new machine (recent convert), I’m a bit frustrated on how it video is handled.
Please correct any of these that I’ve got wrong, but it appears that:
Importing video (from DV camera) with programs provided on my machine can only be done through imovie and idvd.
Importing video through these programs requires creating a project, and importing the video to that project.
Then that imported video is associated with that project.
So I want to take the imported clips (say from imovie), and organize them archiving, use on other projects, backup, etc. I know that I can find the actually video files by control clicking on the project in finder, hit show package, and get to "clip 1, clip 2...clip 55". This represents the raw footage, but now I’ve got say 55 separate clips, for just one import.
I’d like to effectively organize my various raw videos by year/event etc. So that when working a project, a can pull in the different footage that I want to use. For instance, I previously imported and organzied video footage with my PC editing software, and now, thankfully, I can just bring that various footage from the external drive into Imovie and edit. If I want to do a project and grab some footage from 04, 05, 06, it's all right there.
Is there a better solution for import & organizing my raw video clips more efficiently with imovie or idvd?? Or perhaps another program. Such that I’ve got the 1/2 hr of video "Christmas 05", one file (not 40 seperate clips), saved, and can pull it into projects as needed in the future... Ideally maintaining the clip breaks. Am I asking to much from apple? How do you all import/manage/save your imported video?
Much thanks for any feedback!
20" G5 core duo Mac OS X (10.4.7)Ciao Rubbersoul,
unfortunately iMovie doesn't allow you to rename the clips (other than within the project), so if you want to label them for future reference, you'll have to do that outside iMovie.
I personally save the best shots from each project to an external hard drive using the following method:
• simply drag the desired clips from the iMovie project to the desktop
• organize the clips by creating the appropriate folders (e.g. by subject, time, etc.), so you'll find your footage faster
• rename the clips within the folders. If you don't need to give each clip a separate name, you can use tools like Renamer4Mac (http://www.power4mac.com) to batch-rename the clips.
• transfer and organize your folders/clips on the external (Firewire) hard disk. You can do that manually or by using media browsers like iDive to organize and view your clips. iDive is a digital hub that can help you to keep not only your video but also music and pic collections under control, and it integrates with iMovie and FCE/FCP. Check it out here:
http://www.aquafadas.com/idive-digital-video/index.php
Always remember that DV eats up a lot of disk space and don't forget to back up your footage to tape.

New 27 iMAC keeps crashing iMovie and freezing videos on YouTube & Quicktime
We just got a new Sept 2013 iMac three days ago, purchased refurbished from the Apple Store online. The whole point of the purchase was to be able to use iMovie to thoroughly edit videos for our YouTube channel, use garage band, lots of internet surfing and video watching etc. We spent the extra dollars to get what we thought was the most improved version of the iMac with all the souped up specs in order to avoid any hassle and headaches from a lack of performance. Here's what we have:
3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
27-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1440 resolution
8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB hard drive (We have only used 80 GBs of it so far, so plenty of space left)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
720p Camera & Mic
OS X 10.9
We're feeling a bit duped now as this seems to have turned out to just be a big expensive piece of junk. Here are our problems:
- Firstly, thank goodness that we had our own Logitech HD camera/mic left over from our PC because the "HD camera" built in to the iMac is worse in quality than my old blackberry curve. Grainy, lack luster, mic has sharp and distant sound, really really bad and false advertisement.
- In the middle of using iMovie (iMac came preinstalled with the newest one, i think its 10?), it will stop responding properly or will crash and close, we wont even have any other programs running.
- When opening Quicktime to record a new video, in the middle of a recording or while the recording window is idle, it will start glitching - flashing between live footage and a freeze frame repeatedly. The only way to stop it is to quit out Quicktime and open again and try to record quickly, or in some cases we have to completely restart the iMac, which then still randomly in the middle of a recording or idle window it will continue to flash and glitch. (You can view an example here in the last minute of one of our videos, we tried to make it work and kept the take since we were doing our outro music dance, but it totally ***** when this happens randomly during our content portion and we have to redo recording. http://youtu.be/MAJzaEShJGw?t=4m34s )
- When watching YouTube videos, the computer takes a while to respond to a command, like if we click on a certain part of the video, it will not load it until we press the pause/play button a few times and wait. Also at the beginning of a video it will start glitching and freezing again, similar to how we explained above in the quicktime, but faster.
If you are familiar with what could be the problem or have any advice, PLEASE HELP, we are concerned that after dropping so much money within just 3 days of use, this iMac is not performing flawlessly in the areas that we most needed and want to know if these issues are common and fixable or if its a defect that would require we send this thing back immediately. We did not get apple care and would hate to have wasted money that we really dont have on a glitchy crashing huge piece of junk.
Want to mention a few other pros and cons unrelated to our issues, for those who may be considering buying one too:
PROS:
- The Magic mouse is really great, particularly because of the scrolling and zooming gestures. (Though sometimes i accidentaly swipe in a browser and go back to a previous page losing any information that was input on the page i was originally on, for example, i had to retype this whole apple imac inquiry because i swiped backwards by mistake and the whole form cleared! annoying, wish the horizontal swipe navigated between tabs instead of going through the page view history.)
- When the imovie is not crashing, after watching some tutorials and making a few vids, its a really greatly improved program from the '09 version we used to use. I import and edit videos much faster now, and footage does not freeze or take time to load while im dragging and dropping, it is immediately responsive.
- Love using the Talk to text function (like Siri) by pressing "fn" twice. Use this to write long emails and papers with ease. Would like to see a "Speak" read back option that allows for text to be selected and read back (like Siri on iPad)
CONS:
- The text is SO small everywhere and there is no option to exactly set text size across the whole system, only option given is to set a different resolution which lessens the quality of the screen with pixelation, and some programs give you the option to set custom sized text in their individual preferences.
- Sometimes in both iMovie & Garageband, simple automated functionality will stop working, for example in iMove, when certain screens or images are dragged and dropped to the work area by the activity bar (i dont know what else to call it, the line that rolls across during playback or stays put when pressing spacebar) usually, that screen or image will click into place to align with the activity bar and will highlight the bar yellow to further communicate that alignment before you drop it, but after extended use in a session, that snapping into alignment when adding items stops working. Or sometimes you can drag and drop the ends of a title screen to adjust/trim the clip, but after extended time that too stops responding and does not let the cursor turn into that arrow that allows you to trim or extend, until after many frustrated clicks or a quit and restart.
- When sharing/exporting a video from iMovie, i would recommend unchecking the add to theatre option because it significantly extends the amount of time needed to complete the action and i found out the theatre is just like a video stream of your movies to be shared on icloud for easy access from your other devices (similar to the icloud photostream connected to iPhoto). It takes the time to make the video readily availabe in various sizes on the Mac server for easy access, which means it takes forever for your video to be exported to where you actually want it. This is not something we need and is not worth the wait time. (For example, last ime we left the theatre box checked, the progress status of the video was estimated to be completed in 351 minutes, and then 20 minutes later that somehow inclreased to 385 minutes, then duddenly it was done, so i think this add to theatre option also cause the progress status updates to go berzerk.)Given the maximum RAM that model can use is 32GB, and the earlier release of that 27" mid-2013 iMac is nearly the same in most regards, you may note the listing of this slightly older iMac 27" is here in an Apple support document...
•iMac: How to remove or install memory:

The images of where the RAM chips are located, behind a metal plate, should be similar in your iMac and the mid-2013 iMac 27" shown in images on that page. Note there are several models discussed.
You could take the computer to a certified Apple service facility (retail store, or specialist reseller) and pay them to do this, and buy the RAM from them, and you will pay for this at a retail level. If they do it, you'd want to be assured the computer did all the things you sought to cure by upgrading RAM, correctly without fault. Like run tests and stuff.... Or there's no reason to not go ahead (after confirming from Apple) that you could buy quality RAM and do this job yourself, citing the Apple page link I'd posted above.
Contact Apple Support:
http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
You'd have to obtain the correct RAM (as indicated in my earlier post, citing MacTracker) of suitable quality for use in a Macintosh computer, and the recommendation for a DIY is to get the kit from 'Other World Computing' OWC online at their site. You can talk to knowledgable sales staff at OWC about what you have and what you need, and to help they may ask for the product serial number.
This is OWC and they have the spec RAM required for your iMac 27" model; double-check info:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Since yours is an Apple Refurbished model it will have a different number series. Unlike those in a retail store, because Apple does that to tell what ones they refurbished; refurbs I bought online were like that.
With questions during the first three months, you can get 'support' under the initial 90-day span of ownership of the new (and certified) Apple refurbs bought online; the other part of that is 'service' for 1 year. Call a nearest retail Apple Store, to set a genius appointment; or go online, and start the process of reporting your issue, while you still have some kind of warranty on the device. They can diagnose the issues you cite and tell you if you can upgrade the RAM (as you likely can) then you can buy and install the RAM yourself and probably pay less than 1/2 the retail rate, if you get some from OWC. A diagnosis is free if the Genius looks into it, but you'd need to set an appointment & lug the iMac to their store; protected from weather/shock.
If you want to extend the complementary service to three years (less the included 90-days) and add two years of AppleCare service, that is an affordable option of about $170. For a total of three years coverage.
{If you had a 21.5-inch iMac the RAM would require a service department visit where they use a different method to install the RAM upgrade. Those are built differently than the 27-inch iMac.}
There is a bit of detailed important information in the Apple link on how to upgrade the iMac RAM. There is a certain amount of RAM installed already and these chips would likely be removed if you get matching sets of new RAM to upgrade the capacity. And no matter what some say, there is a reason why they can be upgraded with more. Even with Mavericks OS X 10.9.x and its 'memory compression' etc, it would gladly accept all the RAM upgrade chips it could swallow. (Behind metal screen, mid-bottom iMac 27")
You may need to consider questions about applications that use system resources separate from those about whatever issues your iMac seems to exhibit. There may be some other cause of the video and iMovie symptoms, but more RAM won't hurt given the beast you bought can use 32GB and it has 8.
And if it seems too much to handle, you have 14 days from date of
purchase to take it back. Contact them ahead of then, if you do.
Hopefully this helps.
Good luck & happy computing!
