Importing and saving

When importing DV from my camcorder how do I get it to import straight to my external Hard Drive. Becuase I would like to do video editing and movie making without using ANY space on my internal hard drive. EVERYTHING on the external Hard Drive. And what size external hard dirve would you guys reccomend for my purposes. I'm on a budget. Thanks

When you create new project, just point the new project to be saved on your external HD.
PS : you must mount your external HD first to give the saving option to that external, and make sure it is turn on and mount everytine you open your iMovie.
Any external HD size above 100 Gb would do good, try to get one with 7200 rpm and cache 8 or 16 mb. But it depend how long and how many tape you want to import.
I used to import two mini dv tape for two hours of material of project tbefore edit it to my smallest 160 Gb HD without any glitch.

• FHMX Crashes When Importing and Saving

I am using one of the 24" iMacs and FreeHand crashes whenever
I Save As (it doesn't happen when I save over a file that I've
started and saved previously). I am also trying to save directly to
a Network drive. It doesn't crash as much when I save to my
desktop, but it HAS done it, so I don't know if it has to do with
the Intel Processors, the version of Mac OS, or the fact that I'm
saving to a Network, or something that I haven't thought of.
It also crashes when I try to import items into a FH
document, regardless of where those files are saved.
If anyone has any suggestions or advice, please let me know!
I have a major project due today and I can't afford to waste any
time on crashes! Thanks!!!

Hi watermelonpatty!, I don't have much experience with the
new intel macs so this is not a solution to the 'save as" crashes,
but here's a couple of ideas that could save you from losing your
work:
1. before you try to save the file, you could use export to
save the freehand file first just as a safeguard.
2. if you drag and drop items directly from the finder into a
FH page does it crash?, if not you could use this method for the
time being until you find a more permanent fix.
hope this helps

• Importing and Saving Problems

Hello,
I need help with getting my AE 7.0 Professional Version to work. It will not allow me to import and save my work. Does some know what the issue may be?
Here is what system I am using:
MAC OSX 10.6.8
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB Memory
After Effects
Student Version 7.0 Professional

Hello Rick,
I tried to locate the correct Rosetta download for OSX 10.6.8 and I was not able to find it. I tried downloading the Rosetta for OSX 10.6.3 and it would not work with newer versions. Do you know where I can find this Rosetta Download or is there another option you might know about?

• Sony TD10, MVC files, 3D, Importing and Saving - your thoughts?

Hello, new to the forum but over the past year I've been collecting bits and pieces and now finally have a 990X cpu with 3XGTX 580's and Premiere Pro...Ya, what did I get in to..., well something to keep my mind busy.
Anyway, Just got my TD10 and a Bloggie too, but looking to see if there is any updates on importing, but more importantly, being able to save the interlaced file that I'm pulling out of my Sony. Will I need to purchase the Cineform 3d Neo program? I've downloaded the plugins but not sure if that is enough. I just Dave Helmly's "Stereoscopic Workflows for Premiere Pro CS5" and will check that out in a bit.
I have been able to get the files off the TD10, edit a bit and combine with Sony's PMB, then play in 3d with Cyberlink's player with my NVidia glasses, pretty cool.
I see there is a couple posts on this topic inside here but they are 2 months old. I'm just looking for some pointers so I can jump in with both feet and not bang my head against any brick walls. Looking forward to it.
Thanks,
Dan

For what it will cost you in time and plug-ins to go the Cineform/Premiere route, you'll be better off getting Vegas Pro 10. It already recognizes the MVC files flawlessly and allows you to work with them on a single timeline in total, frame-accurate sync.
I don't like the Vegas interface and am in the midst of remapping the keyboard but the ease of working with the footage more than makes up for the quirky keystrokes.
Hopefully Adobe will get it together to handle this format SOON!!!

• Importing masters from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and saving as referenced files on external drive

I'm making the move from iPhoto to Aperture 3.I'm new to Aperture 3 and want o make sure I am importing and saving correctly. So far, I have imported my library of events from iphoto to Aperture 3. I understand that for the most part, it makes sense to house this library on an external drive as "referenced files" vs within Apeture as "managed files." I'm not clear on exactly how to accomplish this set-up. Is this something I should have set-up when doing the initial import or can I move the files now? Once this is done, when importing new files, how do I import to Aperture 3 but save on external drive?
Thanks in advance for your help!

A fabulous answer:
In the olden days ( ) when hobbyists made their own telescopes from kits, everyone wanted a six-inch lens, and the kit makers shipped six-inch lens blanks. Which the hobbyists used to learn lens grinding. Which is arduous and requires skill. Which the hobbyists didn't have until they'd ground that six-inch blank -- an expensive piece of high-quality material at the time -- into a lumpen flawed approximation of a good lens. Then the hobbyists would contact the kit makers and ask for another lens-blank, so they could build their telescope. At which point they would drop the project because the six-inch lens blank cost so much. And much calumny was rained on the kit manufacturers.
Now the kit manufacturers wanted to promote a hobby, and make, in addition to telescope kits, money (not calumny), so they together and separately hit upon the idea of supplying the hobbyist with _two_ lens blanks: a four-inch blank, and a six inch blank. Nobody wanted a four-inch telescope -- but that's not what the blank was for. The instructions read (I've shortened this part) "Grind the four-inch blank into the most perfect lens you can. Check it and re-check it. Now throw it out. You likely now have the skill to grind the six-inch blank into a useable lens."
Thus endeth our fable.
The point, of course, is: start small and gain skill before committing time and material to a task. Port just a small sub-set of you photos into Aperture. Experiment with it. Try different workflows. Think about how to best use the containers and organization tools Aperture provides. Develop a long-term naming convention for files and Projects. Work out a back-up strategy that is scalable and that you will stick with. My specific recommendation for beginners is: don't worry about Referenced v. Managed at first. Make all your Masters Managed. When you have your four-inch Aperture Library all smooth and even, put the entire thing in the system trash -- and then you can start working on an Aperture Library fit for your photos -- one that will allow you to see far, and clear, for years.
Good luck.

Try this ..
On your Mac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to: Notes
Then reselect it.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync the data.
Other than that, try Time Machine > http://pondini.org/TM/15m.html

softwarespecial wrote:
why can't I have the prefs saved in the .h
You can save that address in an ivar if you want to, but there's no purpose to that. The standardUserDefaults object is a +shared class object+. It's like a dictionary object that's maintained for your program by the NSUserPreferences class. You can read from or write to it at any time for the duration of your program. So whenever you get the shared object's address [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults], you're just getting the address of that same object each time.
In case the above doesn't make sense, I ran across a good explanation by Danneman in the last message on this page: [http://www.iphonedevsdk.com/forum/iphone-sdk-development/18716-set-settings-va riable-code.html].
When I did that as you so wisely pointed out it didn't work but when I saved it at each point I needed it it works.
When you change two things at once it's easy to forget the first and assume the second change solved the problem. Actually, I don't think saving prefs in your ivar had anything to do with your bug. What fixed it was getting a pointer to the shared std defaults object in this method:
-(void)permsavedattime
NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; <-- get the shared object
tddate=[prefs stringForKey:@"testing"];
tdtime=[prefs stringForKey:@"timetesting"];
dateoutput.text =[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@",tddate];
Without the first line of the above, I'm fairly sure that your prefs ivar was nil. I didn't see any code that initialized that ivar prior to the first time userdefaultdate ran. It looked to me like permsavedattime ran at start up, well before prefs was set in userdefaultdate. If you're interested in backtracking, restore the file to the way it was when you posted, then add a NSLog() like this:
-(void)permsavedattime
// NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; <-- get the shared object
NSLog(@"prefs=%@", prefs);
tddate=[prefs stringForKey:@"testing"];
tdtime=[prefs stringForKey:@"timetesting"];
dateoutput.text =[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%@",tddate];
I wish to save lets say five different things to NSUSerDefaults would I be able to do it all with my NSUserDefaults prefs or would I have to create a another one for some of them?
You know the answer to your second question now, right? The important point is that you're never creating the shared object, you're just asking for its address whenever you need it.
Btw, there's another user defaults method you should know about: The synchronize method writes the data to disk. You might want to do that when your app is ready to exit. E.g., in the app delegate:
- (void)applicationWillTerminate:(UIApplication *)application {
NSUserDefaults *prefs = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];
[prefs synchronize];
Although the docs suggest synchronize when the app is about to exit, I'm not sure it's necessary. I think the system might write the defaults out to disk anyway when the app terminates, but not sure about this. +User Defaults Programming Topics for Cocoa+ says:
On Mac OS X v10.5 and later, in applications in which a run-loop is present, synchronize is automatically invoked at periodic intervals. Consequently, you might synchronize before exiting a process, but otherwise you shouldn’t need to.
The above is in the iPhone edition, so I think it applies.
It might also be a good idea to update the data and call resetStandardUserDefaults in didReceiveMemoryWarning. I'm not clear about the need for reset either though, since the system may do that for you as well. But on a memory warning, you would definitely want to update the user default data if some of it is stored in an object to be released. You can find out how your app behaves on a memory warning by selecting Hardware->Simulate Memory Warning from the iPhone Simulator menu.

Travel and detours have kept me from following up sooner. If the problem that you wrote about still persists.....
Let us go back over that Adobe document regarding troubleshooting damaged projects.
3. Delete the Application Preferences
Where you able to follow that path and delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file at the end of the path? And, after you did, did the saved/closed programs still refuse to open? If you could not carry out this procedure, what were the limiting factors that kept you from do
7. Test to see if individual media files are causing the problem.
That is an important one. How far did you get into following the instructions given in the document? If you could not complete the test, what was the major block that prevented you from doing so?
I want to make sure that we have gone through everything in that document and ruled all factors there in or out. If it was a matter of you not understanding the instructions, I am hoping that the above will channel you questions to me so that I can clarify anything that you did not understand in the Adobe document instructions.
I do not recall if I asked previously. Even if you cannot open all your saved/closed projects, can you still open a new project and save/close it? Maybe even reopen it?
Please review and consider.
Thank you.

i have accidentally uninstalled Firefox software. how can i recover my bookmarks and saved passwords for the various sites. Please help on this regard. I'm in a serious trouble now.

If you have removed your personal data when uninstalling Firefox then the Firefox profile folder that store your Firefox personal data has been removed.
If you do not have a backup of the files in this folder then your only option is to try to recover this data with an undelete utility like Recuva.

• Following download of version 23.0.1 I lost all previous history but not bookmarks. How do I recover old history? Recovery in "import and backup" does not help

My remembered and retained history was going back quite a few months. Following update of Firefox to 23.0.1 I lost all my history and Firefox only retains websites visited after the new version was installed. My bookmarks have been retained. I tried Recover in "Import and backup" but it only goes back to the date of the new installation. I tried places.sqlite in "Roaming" but there is only one with today's date. Is there a way to recover the lost history? Why did Firefox lose it? Will it happen averytime Firefox updates?

Backup your bookmarks manually. If you have been using the "import" you may have already lost some information by overwriting it. As a matter of course you should always save current bookmarks manually before using any restores.
* [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
That way you can ensure you are able to restore the complete current set. Put your .json backup file somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths. The Windows Desktop or removable media would be suitable.
Firefox does create some autobackups of bookmarks but does not do anything about backing up the History. Luckily Windows probably backs up previous versions of your file ''places.sqlite'' and that is the database with History and bookmarks in it. See if you can recover a recent version of that, it will restore your history up to the date of the restored file.
* http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
* the file ''places.sulite'' is in the Firefox profile, a hidden folder that is easy to find by using troubleshooting. see [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]_how-do-i-find-my-profile
Afterwards import your more recent bookmarks from wherever they were saved. The import overwrites the slightly older bookmarks from the Windows file.
You my also then wish to install and run the addon places maintenance.
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
That may be used to check and repair the places.sqlite database. It will give a short status report. Note if the places.sqlite runs out of space it starts deleting History.
In future you my wish to routinely create occasional backups of your profile or at least your places.sqlite

• Internal table with Import and Export

Hi All,
Hi all
Please let me know the use of Internal table with Import and Export parameters and SET/GET parameters, on what type of cases we can use these? Plese give me the syntax with some examples.
Please give me detailed analysis on the above.
Regards,
Prabhu

Hi Prabhakar,
There are three types of memories.
1. ABAP MEMORY
2. SAP MEMORY
3. EXTERNAL MEMORY.
1.we will use EXPORT/ IMPORT TO/ FROM MEMORY-ID when we want to transfer between ABAP memory
2. we will use GET PARAMETER ID/ SET PARAMETER ID to transfer between SAP MEMORY
3. we will use EXPORT/IMPORT TO/FROM SHARED BUFFER to transfer between external memory.
ABAP MEMORY : we can say that two reports in the same session will be in ABAP MEMORY
SAP MEMORY: TWO DIFFERENT SESSIONS WILL BE IN SAP MEMORY.
for ex: IF WE CALL TWO DIFFERENT TRANSACTIONS SE38, SE11
then they both are in SAP MEMORY.
EXTERNAL MEMORY: TWO different logons will be in EXTERNAL MEMORY.
Syntax
To fill the input fields of a called transaction with data from the calling program, you can use the SPA/GPA technique. SPA/GPA parameters are values that the system stores in the global, user-specific SAP memory. SAP memory allows you to pass values between programs. A user can access the values stored in the SAP memory during one terminal session for all parallel sessions. Each SPA/GPA parameter is identified by a 20-character code. You can maintain them in the Repository Browser in the ABAP Workbench. The values in SPA/GPA parameters are user-specific.
ABAP programs can access the parameters using the SET PARAMETER and GET PARAMETER statements.
To fill one, use:
SET PARAMETER ID <pid> FIELD <f>.
This statement saves the contents of field <f> under the ID <pid> in the SAP memory. The code <pid> can be up to 20 characters long. If there was already a value stored under <pid>, this statement overwrites it. If the ID <pid> does not exist, double-click <pid> in the ABAP Editor to create a new parameter object.
To read an SPA/GPA parameter, use:
GET PARAMETER ID <pid> FIELD <f>.
This statement fills the value stored under the ID <pid> into the variable <f>. If the system does not find a value for <pid> in the SAP memory, it sets SY-SUBRC to 4, otherwise to 0.
To fill the initial screen of a program using SPA/GPA parameters, you normally only need the SET PARAMETER statement.
The relevant fields must each be linked to an SPA/GPA parameter.
On a selection screen, you link fields to parameters using the MEMORY ID addition in the PARAMETERS or SELECT-OPTIONS statement. If you specify an SPA/GPA parameter ID when you declare a parameter or selection option, the corresponding input field is linked to that input field.
On a screen, you link fields to parameters in the Screen Painter. When you define the field attributes of an input field, you can enter the name of an SPA/GPA parameter in the Parameter ID field in the screen attributes. The SET parameter and GET parameter checkboxes allow you to specify whether the field should be filled from the corresponding SPA/GPA parameter in the PBO event, and whether the SPA/GPA parameter should be filled with the value from the screen in the PAI event.
When an input field is linked to an SPA/GPA parameter, it is initialized with the current value of the parameter each time the screen is displayed. This is the reason why fields on screens in the R/3 System often already contain values when you call them more than once.
When you call programs, you can use SPA/GPA parameters with no additional programming overhead if, for example, you need to fill obligatory fields on the initial screen of the called program. The system simply transfers the values from the parameters into the input fields of the called program.
However, you can control the contents of the parameters from your program by using the SET PARAMETER statement before the actual program call. This technique is particularly useful if you want to skip the initial screen of the called program and that screen contains obligatory fields.
Reading Data Objects from Memory
To read data objects from ABAP memory into an ABAP program, use the following statement:
Syntax
IMPORT <f1> [TO <g 1>] <f 2> [TO <g 2>] ... FROM MEMORY ID <key>.
This statement reads the data objects specified in the list from a cluster in memory. If you do not use the TO <g i > option, the data object <f i > in memory is assigned to the data object in the program with the same name. If you do use the option, the data object <f i > is read from memory into the field <g i >. The name <key> identifies the cluster in memory. It may be up to 32 characters long.
You do not have to read all of the objects stored under a particular name <key>. You can restrict the number of objects by specifying their names. If the memory does not contain any objects under the name <key>, SY-SUBRC is set to 4. If, on the other hand, there is a data cluster in memory with the name <key>, SY-SUBRC is always 0, regardless of whether it contained the data object <f i >. If the cluster does not contain the data object <f i >, the target field remains unchanged.
Saving Data Objects in Memory
To read data objects from an ABAP program into ABAP memory, use the following statement:
Syntax
EXPORT <f1> [FROM <g 1>] <f 2> [FROM <g 2>] ... TO MEMORY ID <key>.
This statement stores the data objects specified in the list as a cluster in memory. If you do not use the option FROM <f i >, the data object <f i > is saved under its own name. If you use the FROM <g i > option, the data objet <g i > is saved under the name <f i >. The name <key> identifies the cluster in memory. It may be up to 32 characters long.

• Importing and organizing raw video footage - options

greetings-
Looking for a better solution, if available, for importing & organizing raw video. I am using imovie for now. Soon to switch to FC express. After much exploring & learning on my new machine (recent convert), I’m a bit frustrated on how it video is handled.
Please correct any of these that I’ve got wrong, but it appears that:
Importing video (from DV camera) with programs provided on my machine can only be done through imovie and idvd.
Importing video through these programs requires creating a project, and importing the video to that project.
Then that imported video is associated with that project.
So I want to take the imported clips (say from imovie), and organize them archiving, use on other projects, backup, etc. I know that I can find the actually video files by control clicking on the project in finder, hit show package, and get to "clip 1, clip 2...clip 55". This represents the raw footage, but now I’ve got say 55 separate clips, for just one import.
I’d like to effectively organize my various raw videos by year/event etc. So that when working a project, a can pull in the different footage that I want to use. For instance, I previously imported and organzied video footage with my PC editing software, and now, thankfully, I can just bring that various footage from the external drive into Imovie and edit. If I want to do a project and grab some footage from 04, 05, 06, it's all right there.
Is there a better solution for import & organizing my raw video clips more efficiently with imovie or idvd?? Or perhaps another program. Such that I’ve got the 1/2 hr of video "Christmas 05", one file (not 40 seperate clips), saved, and can pull it into projects as needed in the future... Ideally maintaining the clip breaks. Am I asking to much from apple? How do you all import/manage/save your imported video?
Much thanks for any feedback!
20" G5 core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Ciao Rubbersoul,
unfortunately iMovie doesn't allow you to rename the clips (other than within the project), so if you want to label them for future reference, you'll have to do that outside iMovie.
I personally save the best shots from each project to an external hard drive using the following method:
• simply drag the desired clips from the iMovie project to the desktop
• organize the clips by creating the appropriate folders (e.g. by subject, time, etc.), so you'll find your footage faster
• rename the clips within the folders. If you don't need to give each clip a separate name, you can use tools like Renamer4Mac (http://www.power4mac.com) to batch-rename the clips.
• transfer and organize your folders/clips on the external (Firewire) hard disk. You can do that manually or by using media browsers like iDive to organize and view your clips. iDive is a digital hub that can help you to keep not only your video but also music and pic collections under control, and it integrates with iMovie and FCE/FCP. Check it out here:
http://www.aquafadas.com/idive-digital-video/index.php
Always remember that DV eats up a lot of disk space and don't forget to back up your footage to tape.

• Loading, cropping and saving jpg files in Flex

I'm attempting to apply the code for selecting, cropping and saving image data (.jpg, .png) as shown on the web site:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/filereference_class_as3.html#articlecontentAd obe_numberedheader_1
The sample application is contained within a class called Crop contained in the action script file Crop.as which begins as follows:
package
import com.adobe.images.JPGEncoder;
import com.adobe.images.PNGEncoder;
import flash.display.BitmapData;
import flash.display.DisplayObject;
import flash.display.DisplayObjectContainer;
import flash.display.Loader;
import flash.display.LoaderInfo;
import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.events.Event;
import flash.events.IOErrorEvent;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
import flash.geom.Matrix;
import flash.geom.Rectangle;
import flash.net.FileFilter;
import flash.net.FileReference;
import flash.utils.ByteArray;
public class Crop extends Sprite
My application attempts to make use of the Crop class by including the Crop.as file:
<mx:Script source="Crop.as"/>
in the Flex Component which needs it, and then calling the Crop constructor to perform the methods of the class
var localImage:Crop = new Crop();
localImage.Crop();
My application does not compile. The package statement (or the curly bracket on the following line) is flagged with the error "Packages may not be nested".
I have no idea why this should be as I cannot see any nested definitions anywhere in my application. The component includes the Crop.as file which contains the package and class definition.
Can anyone give my some guidance as to why this error is occurring?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Scott,
#1
that error is because "fx:Script" (or mx:Script) are intended to include part of Actionscript code - but not class defitions or blocks.
So if you are trying to include e.g. such class:
package
import flash.display.Sprite;
public class Crop extends Sprite
public function Crop()
super();
public function processImage():void
trace("processImage()");
compiler will immediately complain as you are trying to incorporate nested class within your application code.
#2
here is correct way (I think) to incorporate some class via mxml tags (here using fx:Script):
Using class sample above:

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
xmlns:utils="*"
applicationComplete="completeHandler(event)">

<fx:Declarations>
<utils:Crop id="cropUtil"/>
</fx:Declarations>

<fx:Script>

import mx.events.FlexEvent;
protected function completeHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
cropUtil.processImage();

</fx:Script>
</s:Application>
But note that you could simply create instance of your class by direct import in fx:Script:
<fx:Script>

import mx.events.FlexEvent;
private var cropUtil:Crop = null;
protected function completeHandler(event:FlexEvent):void
cropUtil = new Crop();
cropUtil.processImage();

</fx:Script>
hth,
kind regards,
Peter Blazejewicz
