Importing any iMac's back up, without integrating it into the new computer's files.
My parent's iMac died, and while they are looking at what they will replace it with, they are temporarily using my Mac Pro. I want to import their back up they were making of all their files, but I do not want it to integrate with my files so their is a quick separation later. What is the best way to do this.
This will not be hard if they had only a single username that was different to yours on the computer..
When you import via migration assistant do not import applications or settings .. just files..
But in the process they are likely to lose their emails etc.
A rather better way to do it.. since a mac pro is one of those few computer you can easily pull out your hard drive.. I recommend just that.. pull your drive and plug in another. load the OS and then you can go to town with migration assistant and load in everything under the sun.
OR..
Get Carbon Copy Cloner.. and make a bootable clone of your computer.. Mac OS disk.. (other disks not needed just boot). Test the bootable clone.. by holding down the option key and booting from it.. so you immediately know where your files are.. you could then use either the internal or the USB.. for the migration.. but IMHO you can disconnect the USB and keep it safe.. let them go to town.. then you can create a bootable clone back to your boot drive.. simple.. fast .. reliable.
Actually thinking about it since you have multiple disk ports in the Pro.. put a hard disk in the pro. .don't use USB at all.. and clone the drive.. then boot off the clone and make sure it works.. swap back to the normal drive and just disconnect your drive.. and copy files to the clone..
War of the Clones. Come out a factory with a Maori NZ accent.. heaven help us.

Our old computer crashed and died. We imported our songs from back up disks to iTunes on the new computer. We lost all our purchased and downloaded songs. None of the help articles are helping. Any suggestions?

i updated to maverick, and maybe it's a coincidence but my left shift key doesn't work unless i really press it down. Is there any way to fix this without bringing it into the Genius Bar?
Plugins usually are installed externally to Firefox. However, you can disable them in Firefox so that Firefox does not use them.
SearchReset is supposed to automate the task of resetting certain preferences, but you still can edit them manually if necessary.
'''''Address Bar Search'''''
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste '''keyword''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Right-click '''keyword.URL''' and choose Reset. This should restore Google as the default for address bar search.
Does that work?
'''''Search Box'''''
Usually it works to choose your preferred search engine from the drop-down. To remove an unwanted search engine plugin, usually the Manage Search Engines... choice at the bottom of the drop-down takes care of it.
Do either of those work?
There might be another way to hijack that search box; I think some of the other frequent responders probably are more familiar with it than I am. -
I Have a Ipod Classic that all my music is on.
After my previous computer crashed I have not had any of my music able to be transfered to the new computer from the Ipod.
Is there a way to do this?Unfortunately, unless you have a backup and can restore the iTunes library to the new computer, you are stuck with the current state of the iPod. This is one of those things that makes doing backups so important.
Unless your music is all purchased from iTunes (not from your own CD's that you imported into iTunes and then downloaded to the iPod), you will be able to re-download all your iTunes store music back to the iPod when you install iTunes on the new computer. When you first attach the iPod to the new computer and new iTunes the first time it will tell you that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and let you initialize the iPod (which will erase everything on the iPod - so don't do this unless you don't care about the stuff on the iPod now).
I've seen 3rd party apps in the past that will let you copy music/content from iPod to computer and bypass iTunes, but not sure if they still exist as this was several years ago.

My iPod touch is synced to my old Mac and I have a new PC. Now when I plug my iPod into the new computer it will make the connection sound, but will not show up in my iTunes. I do not care to have the content copied over. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I'd appreciate some advice on setting up a new, actually used, iMac. I purchased a year-old iMac from a guy who left several apps and some music on the drive. Should I just use the Migration Assistant as I ordinarily would, or do I need to take some action to ensure that the info on this new computer is maintained? If used normally, will the Migration Asst. integrate the music the seller left for me into my iTune library, will it keep those files discrete from the files already in my library, or is it possible that it will toss them out?
Thanks,
spreldogI HIGHLY recommend you format the drive and reinstall the OS before you enter ANY of your info on it.
Then use Migration Assistant to get your info from your old computer to new computer. -

The problem of having 2 'Podcast' folders / menu items after adding a new podcast through clicking on a link in the browser has been addressed on the forums by instructing users to resubscribe to existing podcasts, which then appear in the new folder, and delete the old folder. This will not work for me as most of the podcasts I listen to are BBC, which vanish from the web 7 days after they were first broadcast (about which much swearing, but that's unalterable). Consequently I can't adopt this solution.
I have resubscribed to the podcasts using the link in a browser method, so that they all appear and (in theory) will download new episodes again. However, this leaves the old episodes missing. What must I do to get the episodes downloaded from the old podcasts recognised as belonging to the new subscriptions?I found a very fast and easy solution: I selected all the podcasts in the first window, copied them using the command in the Menu>Edit (Command+C did not seem to work). I then pasted them into the new empty folder. All the podcasts already downloaded appeared. The only problem is that some podcasts did not remember which had been viewed or not, while did keep the information. I just had to re-subscribe to the ones I still wanted by clicking on button.
For some reason, the previous Podcasts folder was only recogized as a list by iTunes, this showed up when I deleted the previous folder (contextual menu). I also had to re-select which ones I wanted synced with my iPad and iPhone.
(I did make a backup of the Podcasts folder in the Finder, just in case, a bit like voodoo computing) -
My old Vista computer died, but I had backup of my old Firefox .json bookmark files and installed this folder on my new window's 7 computer's desktop. But I can't seem to open these files (windows cant find a program to open them with, and I don't seem to have .json files in my file association list) or import them into the new computer's Firefox bookmarks list.
That's great, matthungo, I'm glad it worked and you've got your Bookmarks back. Wishing you and yours a wonderful and blessed Holiday season as well!

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy.... google...." fcpx time machine problem" Frist page link

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.

Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Communities page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums and in the Apple Knowledge Base, before you post a question. -
