Importing ARW files

Lightroom starts up fine when I insert a CF card, but it only ever imports the jpg files , never the ARW ones. ARW is the extension for the RAW files of the Sony Alpha 100 camera. There is no problem with importing ARW files if i search for them & manually import them. It just does not happen on auto-import.
I've looked through forum & manual & program. Am I missing something ?
Chris

About all I can suggest is that you open up the downloader (the camera icon) in your system tray and check the configuration. I use Vista, Sony's downloader or Photo Gallery's downloader and import the downloaded folders into Lightroom. Only the Raw and ARW files come in Lightroom although both the Jpeg and RAW Panasonic files are imported onto my hard drive. I am under the impression that the downloader actually imports both the jpegs and .ARW files onto the hard drive, but don't know for sure.
To completely keep the downloader from launching Lightroom, uncheck "Adobe Photo downloader" and/or "adproxy.exe" in the Start Up tab of msconfig. Let's just say that the Lightroom downloader is less than perfect on Windows.
If you prefer shooting in .ARW, you may also prefer shooting in .ARW only, at least that is what I prefer.

  • Why can't I import ARW File to lightroom 4.4?

I just bought a Sony Nex 5n and I was shooting in raw format.  I notice when i tried to import the file from the SD Card to Lightroom 4.4, it didn't reconized the files and it said it need an update.  I had updated my lightroom and downloaded raw drive from sony. Still nothing work.  I also try to convert the ARW to DNG file and still didn't work.  I don't know what to do. I am running Widows 7 Home Edition.

The NEX 5N has been supported since LR 3.5, so it’s unclear what issue you’re having, unless your camera is really a 5T which wasn't supported until LR 5.2:

  • How to recover sony ARW files deleted by Aperture after importing?

I imported some Sony RAW photos (in .ARW format, shot by Sony Nex 6) from a SDXC card into Aperture library with my MacBook Pro, and as usual I let Aperture deleted the files on the SDXC card (i.e. I did not deleted the files using Finder).  Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the imported ARW files (as masters in the Aperture library) by Carbon Capy Cloner (I made a copy in the wrong direction after editing the photos).  Now I am trying to recover those ARW files.  I used several Photo recovery software but they do not recognize any deleted ARW files on the SD card (nor on my hard drive). The best result was from Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery software, which recognizes those deleted ARW files as NEF files but the size of each photo is only 32KB (it shows the photo in its preview).  I recovered them, but no software can open those 32KB NEF files.  It appears to me that Aperture somehow deleted the ARW files on the SD card in a way (very different from Finder deletion) that photo recovery software can't recognize them.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

Yes I understand that trying to recover from my HD is more difficult, so my attention is on the card now.  In fact, I tried to use Stellar to recover from the HD as well and I got tons of other photos and non of them is ARW.
I have kept both the HD and the card not being used anymore (I stopped using it right after I made the copy in the wrong direction, and the card is not being used after Aperture deleted the photos), so the data should be there.  I tested with Stellar on a new card.  I shot some ARW photos and format the card on my NEX 6 camera, then try to recover them with Stellar.  Same result: no ARW files, only NEF files of size 32KB or less (the photos in the preview are correct).  Strange.  I tried Remo software, no ARW either, not even NEF files.  I guess I am using the wrong recovery software (although they advertise that they recover ARW files).  Is there any recovery software that DOES recover ARW photos shot by Sony NEX 6?

  • Import Sony RAW .arw files not automatic

I decided to take the plunge yesterday I downloaded the trial LR2 (now 2.1) and purchased Kelby's Lightroom 2 book. All my catalog from PSE6 imported without a hitch. That's over 12000 photos with about half of them Minolta (.mrw) and Sony RAW (.arw) files. Then I decided to import the shots I had just taken from a weekend photoshoot. I plugged in my CF into the card reader and started LR. When I clicked on the IMPORT button for my CF location all I got was the message "NO PHOTOS WERE FOUND TO IMPORT". I can import the files using the manual CHOOSE FILE option but I want it to work just like PSE with auto import. From what I understand that should be the case. After a Google search I found importing Sony RAW images (.arw) was an issue in LR1, but shouldn't Aobe have fixed it by now?? Just as an aside, if I'm having this issue with .arw files, when I import the RAW images from my Minolta 7Hi I wonder if I'll have the same issue.
Since its a trail version I'm not eligible for Adobe support, so there is no help coming from there.

  • Sony a7 mk2 ARW files will not import

I have a Sony RX100 and LR 5.7 imports the ARW files ok, However I've just bought an A7 Mk2 and Lightroom will not import the ARW files from that camera. I've downloaded CameraRaw 8 so I can convert the files first and then import into LR, but it seems strange that I cant import and convert from withing LR itself.

    Mac – http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5856
    Win – http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5857
Use the links above to upgrade to LR 5.7.1 or if you have a Creative Cloud account subscription login to your account and check if there is a button indicating "install" available next to Lightroom and proceed to click the button and install the update.

  • Problems with .ARW files and auto toning

problems with .ARW files and auto toning
let me try to explain this because this has happened in past and never found a way to resolve but i lived with it
now that I have a Sony A7R the problem is more serious
Firstly i take pride it making the picture happen all in camera, i use DRO lvl 5 to get enough light, like when i'm shooting at dusk. DRO its like doing HDR but in a single file, it lightens the darks. in my camera i'm happy with results
but when I upload them to lightroom, they come out near black.
    allow me to explain
lets say I import 100 images
i double check my preferences and everything is UNCHECKED when it comes to importing options, there is no auto toning, nothing.
as the images import i see a preview in the thumbnail which looks fine.
i double click on one to enlarge it, hence leave grid view.
for a brief 1 or 2 seconds, i see the full image in all its glory but than lightroom does something funny, it darkens the image
one by one as it inspects each image, if it was a DRO image it makes it too dark.
to make this clear, the image is perfect as it was in the beginning but after a few seconds lightroom for some reason thinks it needs to correct it.
how to prevent lightroom from doing this, i want the image exactly as it is, why must lightroom apply a correction>?
i think it has to do something with interpreting the raw file and lightroom applies its own algorithm.
but here is what i dont get.....before lightroom makes the change i'm able to witness the picture exactly as it was taken and want it unchanged..
now i have to tweak each file or find a profile for it which is added work.
any ideas how to prevent lightroom from ruining my images and just leave them as they were when first detected...
there are 2 phases...one is when it originally imports and they look fine
second is scanning each image and applying some kind of toning which darkens it too much.
    thanks for the help

sorry thats the auto reply message from yahoo email.
    i've disabled it now
thing is, there is no DRO jpg to download from the camera
its only ARW. so my understanding is when i use DRO setting, the camera makes changes to the ARW than lightroom somehow reads this from the ARW.
but then sadly reverts it to no DRO settings.
because i notice if i take normal picture in raw mode its dark but if i apply dro to it, it comes out brighter, yet when i d/l the image from camera to lightroom, which is an ARW - there are no jpgs. lightroom decides to mess it up
so in reality there is no point in using DRO because when i upload it lightroom removes it.
is there a way to tell lightroom to preserve the jpg preview as it first sees it.
its just lame, picture appears perfect...than lightroom does something, than bam, its ruined,.
what do i need to do to prevent lightroom from ruining the image? if it was good in the first place.

  • LR 4.2RC and ACR 7.2 RC won't read SONY RX 100 ARW files

I was at a wedding yesterday and had two cameras with me - a Nikon D800 and my little SONY RX 100.  I was using an Eye-Fi Pro card for the Sony.  I'm uninterested in the Wi-Fi capabilities when I'm away from home, but like the camera to upload pictures when I'm close to my big processing machine.  Long story short.  This was the first time I've used the LR 4.2RC and ACR 7.2RC with the Sony RX 100.  I plugged the card into both the regular Eye-Fi USB reader, and into my Hoodman USB 3.0 reader.  Of course, LR doesn't like the Eye-Fi reader, but it loves the Hoodman.  Finally, it recognized the Hoodman and the Eye-Fi card.  I have previews set to minimal and I was attempting to import all the raw (ARW) files into Lightroom.  When the initial previews come up as I start the import process, it shows about 1/3 of the previews and then tells me it can't read the rest, including MP4 files.  When I actually begin the import, it simply times out and reports that it was unable to import ANY of the ARW files, nor the MP4 files.  I have no trouble reading 63 files into Raw Photo Processor so I know there is nothing wrong with any of the files.  I can only conclude that there is something wrong with LR 4.2 and/or ACR 7.2.
Anyone else reporting this problem?  I'm puzzled because this is the ONLY time I have ever had trouble importing files from supported cameras.
    Thanks for feedback.

Well.  After some experimentation, I discovered what the problem seems to be.  For reasons completely opaque to me, Lightroom expects not only that the Eye-Fi card will be read from its own reader, but it also expects that the Eye-Fi helper application be installed and running.  Of course, this means that I end up with duplicate copies of every file - once to the Eye Fi directory, and again to the appropriate Lightroom Folder on a completely different set of drives.   I guess the conclusion I can draw from this is that without the helper application, the Eye Fi card is dumb and the images only partly visibible.  The Eye-Fi helper can import the .ARW files, but it doesn't display them because Apple hasn't updated its camera list to include the RX100.  Until they do, I think I'll just use regular cards and consign the Eye-Fi card to the hall of unhelpful cards.  Yikes, the darned thing is as expensive as the Lightroom upgrade.
    Sigh.

  • LR4.4: Nex5 vs Nex5T no longer reads arw file

My Sony Nex5 broke and is no longer available, so I bought the Sony Nex5T. I use Win7 on desktop and Lightroom 4.4. When I take picture with my Nex5, I import the photos off the card into a 'dump' folder based on date and Copy as DNG. I can preview the photo and import arw to dng with no problem.  I shoot in jpeg-raw on both cameras.
With the Nex5T, I follow the same process as with nex5.  However, now the "Preview is unavailable for file" and when I try to import, "The files are not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom"  Both cameras are sony and use arw format.
Solutions I tried: I reformatted the SD card, I made sure the folders had permission to write (no read only folders), I copied arw into folder then tried to convert (didn't work), and I checked the help discussions and google searched and cannot find a solution.
I can use the dngconversion program, but it takes a long time. changes the name of the file so now the jpeg and dng are no longer combined which is a problem for me.
Would lightroom 5 fix this? I would consider upgrading but if it doesn't, I don't want to waste the money. I want the process to work with the new camera the same way it worked with an earlier version of the same one!!  Ideally I'd like to keep lightroom 4.4. I'm still trying to learn how to use it beyond organization.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

If you have a look at Camera Raw 8.2 and DNG Converter 8.2 Now Available it seems to indicate that Nex5T support appeared in Lightroom 5 on Sep 17, 2013. So Lr 5.5 will support the RAW files.
Otherwise you will need to use the DNG Converter as you mentioned above.

  • Sony ARW files in Camera RAW 6.2 for PSE 8

Recently I bought a new camera, a Sony A580. I made several tests in RAW (ARW-files) and found out that my PSE8 does not recognize the files and hence, does not import them into the organizer.
I started searching and installed the Adobe Camera RAW 6.2 update, and installed a Sony update for viewing ARW files in Windows Vista/7.
Now I can view the ARW files in Windows, but still cannot import them into the organizer.
Is there anybody out there who can help me importing my ARW files into the PSE8 organizer?
    Thank you in advance,
    With kind regards,

    Well, very clear answer.
Can you tell me where I can find information about models which are supported by Camera RAW 6.2? I've been searching everywhere but only been able to find supported camera models for Camera RAW 6.3.
Thanks a lot for your swift answer and the supplied links.

  • Lightroom 4.4 and ARW files from a Sony RX100 II

Does anybody know if there is a way to have Lightroom 4.4 directly recognize these ARW file? Right now it will not import them, which is a pain. Thanks!

Raw support for the RX100 II was not introduced until Lightroom version 5.2. So your choices are either upgrade your Lightroom, or use the free Adobe DNG converter to create DNG files which LR4 will then happily read.

  • I have a new camera and cannot import RAW files into lightroom.

I have a new Sony NEX 5 and have tried importing the ARW files into lightroom. The files are recognized when I import photos from device. When I choose the .arw files to import, I receive an message "unknown errors occurred" and files won't import. I have never had a problem importing files from a card or directly from my older camera. Any suggestions?

Check here to see if your camera is supported yet.
If its a camera launched in the last month it won't be. But you can try LR 3.2 RC and see if it has been added. Otherwise you will have to wait until LR supports the format. This is a problem caused by manufacturers constantly using their own formats which require Adobe to investigate every new format before adding it to LR. In 99.99% of the cases the so called new format from the manufacturers is just a line of code with the name of the camera in it. You can use a EXIF editor tool (just google, lots of free ones) to change the name in the RAW file to one presently supported and then convert to DNG. If you do go down this road then ensure you also keep a copy of the original files just in case something has actually changed.
If you are still using LR 2.7 and the format you need was introduced with LR 3 you don't need to upgrade, you can just use Adobes standalone converter to convert the files to DNG and then import them.

  • Can't open ARW files

I bought a Sony Cybershot DSC RX100, which was launched in July, and I just can't open the ARW.files (Sony RAW files). My Sofware is completely updated. Any ideas?

Later versions of iPhoto support the ARW format (imports fine on my Mac Book Air running iPhoto '11 [9.4.2], Sony have a converter that you can use : http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/imsoft/Mac/idc/us.html or you could use Picasa, which will also allow you to import.
The Sony Image Data Converter allows you to convert a series of images to JPG or TIF format and also provides the ability to play with the brightness, white balance, creative style, contrast, tone curve etc. before processing. Developing (Converting) of the image files is a little slow having regard to the 20M file sizes.

  • Sony A77 ARW files in LR 5.2 do not show...

    Hi there,
some time ago I was "suddenly"troubled that my Sony A77 Arw files dit not show up in Lr 3 no more. I recently upgraded to 5.2 but same problem...
On the same laptop they do show up in PSE 12 strangely enough.
Maybe I overlook something but any help/suggestion is welcome as I am truly stuck. Thanks!

    Hi thanks for replying.
I am using the most recent version of LR on a dell lattitute W7.
I import the files and convert them directly into DNG.
When in the library it shows meta details like in the screenshot below. But the actual immage is not shown. This counts for the ARW files but also Jpeg or Tiff files. As said before the image is shown in PSelements-12 and also in Sony sw itself(PMB) I am  afraid I overlook something simple but I cannot get my fingers behind it. Thanks for any help!

  • Geotagging raws/ importing xmp files

I'm shooting exclusively in Sony ARW raw format and look for an solution, now for over a year, to geotag my images inside Aperture - so far with no success. It seems to be an unholy alliance between Sony, not allowing to embed geotagging information into their RAW formats, and Aperture being unable to import xmp sidecar files.
I can import import a folder containing ARW files with accompanying xmp files (created with an application like Geotag and containing the geotagging information for the unaltered RAWs) into Lightroom, and have all geotagging information incorporated into the EXIF fields of the Lightroom database automatically.
But so far I found no way to get this information into Aperture, neither natively, nor with the help of Automator actions, AppleScripts or plugins.
I really hope, the next version of Aperture improves on this. Meanwhile I've downloaded the Lightroom 3 beta to check whether this could become an alternative to Aperture ...

Sorry for answering my own post, but I figured out a slight work around, and others may be interested:
I have my photos arranged in folders containing 75-125 photos each. For each photo I created an iView catalog. Each catalog was then imported into the appropriate album in Aperture using Annoture.
My struggle earlier was trying to load all my images into a single iView catalog. Annoture seemed to double count images, and choke when synchronizing large numbers of pictures (1000+).

  • Horizontal colored bands appearing in imported raw files

I just now started to have mostly magenta horizontal lines or bands appear in imported a Sony Nex 7 ARW files. When opening the same file with Sony’s raw converter or DXO Pro, the bands are non existent. I have noticed that sometimes but not always, the bands will disappearing in LR after I examine a photo by clicking on it to enlarge a selected area and the loading finishes. Exported photos will have the bands. Also, If I first open the files with IDC or DXO, the file will then import into Lightroom without the bands. I have run diagnostics on the SD card and the hard drive with no errors showing up. Running LR5.4 on a Macbook Pro. I’m totally confused. Any enlightening comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
These artifacts are exactly like those in the post : Why do I get Colored bands on some images in LR4 and LR5, but not in Aperture?

I have the EXACT same problems when importing .RAF files from my Fujifilm X-T1 via a USB card reader (USB 2.0) on my MacBook Pro 13" Retina (late 2013) with OS X 10.9.3 in Lightroom 5.4. (I did not purchase the X-T1 until after I updated to 5.4, so I can't speak of whether this happens in other versions of LR)
I second sevenc's suggestions that this is NOT a hardware issue - I have tried 5 different SD cards, all formatted either on my computer or in the camera, reformatted several times (low-level format) and it STILL happens! Never with the JPGs, only with the RAW files.
However, doing a straight file copy from the SD card (in the card reader) to the hard drive before doing the import works fine - no artifacts!
Ditto if I use the internal SD reader (an internal USB3.0 connection) on the Macbook, no purple bands.
It is apparently unrelated to the OS, since this is happening both in Windows and OS X. I have posted a more detailed acccount here:
    Lightroom 5.4 - "glitches" on my RAF->DNG conversions from X-T1 - Fuji X Post Processing - Fuji X Forum
One of the members of that forum has seen the same happening with Panasonic RAW files, but only when an external USB drive was connected at the same time.
When the external drive was disconnected, the images imported normally.
BTW, my Canon files import just fine, using the same SD card, the same USB card reader and the same computer - no glitches....
The most likely thing happening (my opinion) is that the Lightroom import process somehow interferes with the USB connection. It doesn't really make sense, because I am sure Lightroom uses the standard OS I/O file routines, but it seems to be the most likely issue. Is there a chance LR uses its own code for reading files off of external drives.
Other software (Aperture, Preview, Image Capture, Raw Photo Processor 64 or PhotoNinja) can import fine, whether the card is in an external card reader or not - no artifacts.
I have seen it the same issue described with Panasonic files on LR 4, so it does not seem to be limited to LR 5.4
Re: Why do I get Colored bands on some images in LR4 and LR5, but not in Aperture?
Anyone care to shed light on the issue and what could be going on here ? It seems the more obscure raw formats are affected (Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm) and that Canon/Nikon users do not experience it (at least I haven't found it described online).
This is a serious bug, because unless you do a re-import of the RAW/RAF file, the image data is permanently corrupted. It is not an issue of corruption of the embedded JPG preview , it is the RAW file itself. Once it has been imported by Lightroom, it displays the artifacts in other programs as well (Aperture, Preview etc)
Trying to convert the image to another format, e.g. TIFF, JPG, BMP the artifacts are still there.
I hope this is taken seriously by Adobe, as it is a critical issue for those of us who are affected. I can work around it by copying the files to my hard drive first, but it shouldn't have to be this way....
