Importing audiobooks from CD

I'm trying to help my daughter to import a couple of audiobooks from CD into iTunes.  I'm used to downloaded audiobooks (mainly from Audible) where an unabridged reading is stored in a small of files (usually from 1-3), each of which is broken up into multiple chapters.  Looking at the CDs, though, there are multiple discs (7 or 8) per book, and each disc is broken up into 70-75 tracks, each about a minute long.  The sleeve notes list the correspondence between tracks and chapters - some of these span two discs, e.g., the book chapter consists of tracks 50-70 of one disc and tracks 1-10 of the next disc.
I know that iTunes allows tracks can be merged on import, so in this example I could select the tracks that make up each chapter to merge and import these as one file.  I've never used this, though, and have a couple of questions:
After import, are the original CD track boundaries recognized within the resulting files, i.e., is it possible to skip forward or backward based on the original tracking?
Is there any way to create one file that merges tracks from two different CDs?
I'm assuming that the answer to the second question in no, so that I'll end up with several pairings of tracks Chapter X, Part 1 + Chapter X, Part 2.
Given that iTunes doesn't seem to have all the capabilities needed to convert from CD to "Audible-like" audiobook files, are there any third party utilities (preferably free!!) that can do the job better?  Do any such utilities use existing audio files, as opposed to CD tracks, as input?

Thanks - useful info (as always), though it doesn't address the specifics of converting a multi-disc, many-short-tracks CD set to a much smaller set of longer files.  So far I'm just working with what iTunes gives me and will end up with 21 files averaging 24-25 minutes rather than nearly 500 one-minute tracks ... this is good enough for immediate purposes, though I'd still like an ability to convert sources like this to "real" audiobooks.

  • How to import Audiobooks from MacBook to Ipad2

How to import AudioBooks from Macbook OS 10.4.1 onto an Ipad2?
I have many audiobooks which I am currently attempting to have re-loaded via the Apple Support network and have requested that these Audiobooks purchased in good faith between 2008 - 2009 be made available for download on our recently purchased Ipad2 via ITunes. This download procedure has worked very well for the 18 songs purchased in the same period. However, I have followed a discussion on the Apple Support community by TASA posted on the Nov 13 2011 and have made a similar polite request to the Apple Support afficionados, so far with no success. My question is this How can i transfer the Audiobook files which appear as m4b across to the Ipad2. I cannot sync the MacBook because the operating system is a mismatch. Attempting to use a camera connection kit by Apple and using an SD card to copy a single audi file has not worked. What other recourse of action is there?
It is all very well suggesting that Audiobooks can only be downloaded once, as has been mentioned by a discussion pundit. However this was not in the Terms and Conditions from 2008, of which I have a copy.

Back in 2008 all media purchases from the iTunes Store were subject to a one time only download policy. iTunes would have regularly reminded you to backup your purchases unless you chose to suppress such messages.
With your audiobooks in an iTunes library you can take the opportunity to make secondary backup copies now on removable media or networked storage.
I don't understand what you mean by this:
I cannot sync the MacBook because the operating system is a mismatch.
If you download and install the latest version of iTunes to your computer it should be capable of communicating with the device and will let you copy the audiobook files across. If the iPad is set up to sync with a different library/computer then copy the audiobook files to that. If your iPad is not set to sync with any library, and your concern is that you will lose data if you attempt to associate it with the library on your computer then this method should work for you...
    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.

  • Importing Audiobooks from CD - Media Kind Greyed Out

I am importing audiobooks from CD and all the relevant Options for audiobooks are greyed out.
    "Media Kind" is greyed out
    "Remember position" is greyed out
"Skip when shuffling" is greyed out
I can make the changes after I've imported them, but I really want to do it before I import as it simply makes it easier on me (which is to say, it saves me time, and time is precious).
Any idea why these would be greyed out for importing audio CDs?
At least I can still join tracks.
Hmmm ... I suppose I should see if it's also greyed out when I import a music CD, but I haven't bought a music CD is years and have already imported all the one I do own.

Any idea why these would be greyed out for importing audio CDs?
Because this info is not in the tags for the audio CD. They are part of the file after you import it.
This info is part of the *CD Info.cidb* file., which is where iTunes stores the CD info. The CD info is not stored in iTunes.
See this -> How iTunes remembers audio CDs
I suppose I should see if it's also greyed out when I import a music CD
    Yes it is.

  • Importing audiobooks from Overdrive not showing up

I've downloaded OverDrive so that I can download audiobooks from the library.
I've installed and updated all necessary programs, gone into iTunes and chosen manually managing files under my iPod Nano as suggested, and I've even been able to Add Folder to Library where the audiobook files were converted from WMA...but now I can't find the converted files in iTunes.
What happened to the audiobook? What am I doing wrong?
    TIA

I'm not sure what Overdrive is and what some of audiobook files you refer to but what I do is get the books on CD and then just manually drag the files from each disk into folders & playlists I create. You have to do this with the organize and copy options off so the tracks will stay in the correct order. I haven't messed with the digital audio books as yet from the library, they have a due date and I don't like the pressure, I have been very happy with the CDs and I can delete when I'm done. Hope it helps.

  • Importing audiobooks from cds

I have an audiobook that is 3 cd's that I want to import to iTunes then sync to my iPod. When importing first cd (about 70, 30-60 second tracks) it goes to Library, then I import 2nd cd and it meshes the tracks to the first cd in the library (track 1 of the second cd follows track 1 of the first cd, and so on screwing up the order that the book is read back.
Can anyone help with the proper way of importing a multiple cd audiobook?

    Not really likely, is it?
First of all, look on the iPod to see if the song is actually on there. (The last Sync of my Classic resulted in "song not copied... because it cannot be found." The song had previously been on the iPod. I checked and despite the fact that iTunes could not find the file, the song was still on my iPod. I checked the folder and the song was exactly where t was supposed to be. So I simply set iTunes to find it again. What happened? I don't know, iTunes simply threw a wobbly!)
Second, try another Sync. Does this change anything? If the song was on the iPod, does a second Sync remove the message?  If the song was not on the iPod after the first Sync, does the second one put it on there?
    What happens?

  • Importing Audiobooks with alternative to Track 1, Track 2, Track 3, ...

I have an audiobooks with 7 Disc.
    I want to import them with the Track name with Disc 1->1a, 1b, 1c,...., Disc 2->2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, ..., Disc 3->3a, 3b, 3c, 3d...
I do not want to import as (default): Track 1, Track 2, Track 3 for each of the 7 Disc. I am not interested in using Get Info to manually change the Track name. Is there some type of Itunes Add on for Itunes Windows or something to change in the configuration.
Otherwise, is there a program that automates the ID3 Track name renaming and maybe the file name too.
I am sick of importing Audiobooks with several Disc, each with Track 1...X for each Disc.

I wrote a program to help with importing audiobooks and renaming tracks. It doesn't do quite what you want. First, it only names tracks on import -- there's currently no way to rename existing tracks in your Library. Also, the names don't exactly match what you want. Instead, you can do something like: <disc num><track num>, e.g.:
    For Disc 1:
    0101
    0102
    0103
    For Disc 2
    0201
    0202
    Or you can use letters
    01a
    01b
    01c
    02a
    02b
The program is free. If you want to try it you can get it here:
    http://www.pobox.com/~teridon/audiobook_helper/index.html
The forum TOS requires me to say: "I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link" because I have a paypal donation link on my webpage, but the program is free (donation totally optional).

  • Audiobook from CD not in Audiobook Library

    Hello,
I've spent the last hour and a half trying to find an answer to this question on the support page.
I bought an audiobook on CD and imported it into iTunes as AAC. The book won't show up in the "Audiobook" library. I've arranged the info file in proper order and check it against my online purchased audiobooks; they info formated in the same way, ie order number, audiobooks as the genre etc. The only thing I could see, looking at the actual file in Finder, is that books bought on iTMS are .m4b, books from audible.com are .aa and the book I imported from CD are .m4a The CDs, 26 of them, were aiff files, not mp3.
So the question is: Can I get these files into the "Audiobook" library? Is there a trick in the file name? I have the CDs so I could rip again if there is something special I need to do for this.

Here's the very basic version of my method of importing audiobooks:
I import the CDs in AAC, which gives me .m4a files. I then run a script called "Make Bookmarkable" to change the file extension to .m4b. You could do this manually or with a file renamer and achieve the same result. I then remove the files from my library and re-add them.
Please note, iTunes will ask you what you want to do with the files you're deleting from the library. PLEASE make sure you click "Keep Them"! Moving them to the trash won't hurt, but if you accidentally empty the trash before you re-import the files you're sunk.
    You'll find the files in ~/Music/iTunes Library/Author Name/Book Title
    Hope that helps!

  • How to import audiobooks into the right place on Itunes?

I have Windows and am struggling with getting audiobooks from a CD to actually go into the "audiobooks" designation on the left hand side of the screen.
What they are actually doing is being listed as "books and spoken" and remaining in my music library. I'm assuming if they remain in there, the chapters will get shuffled like songs?
Can someone help this confused Kansas dude out?

If the files are mp3 then you can't just change the extension. The extension actually tells the computer what program to use when playing the file along with how to play the file.
To do what you want try reading these.
