Importing AVCHD and the quality looks terrible

I just tried importing my Canon Vixia HFG10 HD video clips and the results look terrible.  They look really good on the camera but in Premiere Pro 5.5 they don't.
I loaded the clips in the media browser and did a new-sequence-from-clip to match all of the specs.
Any thoughts?
My inital browsing for solutions recommended buying some converters but after buying PP and a top-line camera I am not too jazzed about going to the wife and saying I need to buy more.

So people don't have to ask, it is a good idea to post at least a short list of your hardware

  • I am trying to edit footage in PE12 from 2 different cameras and the output looks terrible

I am trying to edit footage in PE12 from 2 different cameras. One is a canon HD video camera taking AVCHD at 1440x1080 at 29fps. I am also using a canon 70D DSLR taking a MOV at 1920x 1080 at 29FPS
I want to make a 2 camera angle video. When i import both videos into PE12 and edit them together (i am dropping in footage and editing them back to back on video/audio 1) and start rendering, the output video is horrible. there are no straight lines and its blurry. the source video looks great...I am wondering if the difference in size of the 2 videos are messing up the project. is there anything i could do to make the final video look better?
I am very new at using this program and any information would be helpful...
    thanks in advance,
    jason

    Both 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 (pixel aspect ratio = 1.33) and 1920 x 1080 16:9 (pixel aspect ratio = 1.0) have the same
display, that is, 1920 x 1080. Whether you use a project preset for either, the space established by the project preset in the Edit area
monitor is 1920 x 1080 for editing. So, we achieve the goal of a 1920 x 1080 Edit area monitor space in selecting the project preset cited
    above, that is
    NTSC
    DSLR
    1080p
    DSLR 1080p30
On the export side of things, it has long been suggested that 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic content be exported with preset for 1920 x 1080 16:9
instead of 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 since both give the same display (1920 x 1080) and the choice 1920 x 1080 16:9 avoids the use of
a format that depends on a 16:9 flag to stretch the 1440 x 1080 for display after encoding. The latter has implications regarding issue of the player and recognition
    of the 16:9 flag.
So, we should be OK on the import and export choices.
What about what happens between import and export. You wrote
I tried this solution and it seemed like it helped at first but when the final project was done, it looked bad again.
How did the final product look bad....was it the 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:8, the 1920 x 1080 16:9, or both that presented poorly in the export
    which I am assuming was Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30?
Depending on your further details, I have some suggestions for the Timeline content prior to export to file.
    Please review and consider.
    Thanks.

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

Under the Effects-Lumetri Looks-Desaturation choose a B and W effect. Then add the luma corrector from the Video effects-colour correction section. Adjust the brightness and contrast to get the effect you want.

I barely bought my iphone 6 plus in october and the speaker looks white how would i clean that?

White from what? Lint? Try a small soft brush with a vacuum and see if you can gently brush it out. A vacuum will help lift the lint rather than possibly getting pushed into the phone.

  • I am trying to import video and the audio doesn't upload with the video. Help.

I am trying to import video and the audio doesn't upload with the video. Help.
I upgraded to iMovie 11 because the previous version wouldn't read the type of video I was importing (VOB).  The video imports but not the audio, what do I do?

What are you capturing from?  You may not hear the auido as it's captured but it will be there.  After it's captured can you see the audio waveforms? Do the audio meters move when you play the clip?  If so then go to "View" then "Audio Playback"  and set it to 'Built-in Output" if you're monitoring audio through the computer.

  • I have downloaded Yosemite and want to delete it it possible off my mac, I previously had Mountain Lion which I liked.  I hate Yosemite, the dock looks terrible.

I have downloaded Yosemite and want to delete it, is this possible?

I also think the computers are over priced and over rated,, its all about profit with this company, they dis-regard customers comments and I have read all the feedback regarding Yosemite...Yosemite looks cheap, is slow, and the classy stand alone image is now gone with this computer.....would I purchase another of these comps?? the answer is NO, for the various reasons..1.. if you have a problem with the computer a service engineer will not come to your premises, the customer has to take there machine to the nearest store,, which in my case will be over an hours drive away,,  2..The recent update has not only put me off buying any further computers, I also would never recommend these to a friend or business associate,, 3rd,,The manufacturer never listen to the customer they just think of the profit,, so next year I will be choosing an alternative computer supplier.

  • Edited video quality looks terrible!

I am seriously confused... Take a loot at the photo. On the left is the viewer and on the right is the canvas.
I have filmed with an HD video (5D MKIII) yet why is it, when I edit this specific part of the video it goes so poor quality?
I have changed all the playback settings to full quality and HD. I even tried to export it and it came out poor quality as well!
Befire rendering it looked fine, yet when it has been rendered it looks terrible. When I view it for editing it also looks fine (as you can see) but in the canvas it looks terrible again.
Why is it doing this and is there a way to fix it?
    Thanks

That could be the problem... where it says 'Quicktime Video settings' that was set on H.264. I haven't converted my .mov files to ProRes no...
I'm guessing I'd need to convert them then import them and edit them all again then?
    Thanks for the reply

  • Importing mpeg2 and video quality of final DVD

I had a company create an mpeg2 file from a master for a dvd project I'm authoring. I'm not sure what format the master is on, I'm guessing BetaSP but it is something other than a DV format which is all I can handle. When my client saw the finished DVD I authored he was unhappy with the video quality, it is noisy/grainy. I told him I that is how I received it from this company (the company houses all of my client's masters) but he said his master was of higher quality. So we asked the company what the deal was and they are telling me these two things, both of which I don't believe.
My client had sent them the check disc (an authored dvd) I sent him and I sent the mpeg2 file back to them. They claim that the video quality is worse on the check disc because when you author a DVD it transcodes the files when it creates the vob files. Now the mpeg2 file imported into Encore fine and Encore defaulted to it being "do not transcode". So encore as far as I know definitely did no transcoding. Is there any validity to what they are saying? I don't think so.
They also claim that for optimum video quality I should've requested the master be transfered to DVCAM (dvcam I can indeed handle). So they are saying going from the master to dvcam to mpeg2 would be better than going from master to mpeg2. That makes no sense to me. If the master is DigiBeta, going from digibeta to the lesser quality dvcam and then to mpeg is the best route? Now way right? It seems to me that THEIR mpeg2 encoder just isn't any good.
Any thoughts would be appreciated (so I can argue my case).
    thanks
    Ryan

    I agree with Joe.
DVCAM from DigiBeta is no quality increase at all. If anything (depending on the digibeta) you're dropping quality. You're certainly not gaining anything.
Correct workflow for DVD Authoring with DigiBeta masters is as follows:
1 - Transfer from DigiBeta to NLE Workstation.
    2 - Edit as required
3 - Export from workstation to final version*
4 - Create DVD - and the biggest difference is going to be what is used - and
    i how
it is used - to do the MPEG-2 encoding that the DVD application will require. MPEG encoding is not a matter of bashing out a PRESET from a menu. That will
    i never
give the highest quality. MPEG encoding is every bit as much an art form as the shooting, cutting & producing of the film in the first place, and is a skill that takes both time & experience to learn properly.
    NB.
    * = This has been a bone of contention for a while now. It is often recommended to go to DV AVI as the interim format, but for absolute highest possible quality, this is not really true as DV AVI (DVCAM) is a compressed form, albeit lightly. Some prefer a more filmic look to their footage (which DV will never give you).
It's all swings & roundabouts. The final Master (for us) is usually a 10 bit Blackmagic type file, or an uncompressed AVI file. Expect to see around 40Gb/hour in this form, even more with a 10 bit file. Does going to 10 bits make a difference? As long as you do not have your NLE set to 8 bits, you bet it does!
