Importing AVCHD files into FCE without a camera

I have a folder of AVCHD files and am unable to open them via Log and Transfer. I don't have access to the camera, I was given the files already in a folder which I copied to my drive. I believe the folder I have contains the entire AVCHD directory structure. They are not just MTS files.
When I use the import button in Log and Transfer, all the files are grayed out, and when I try to drag any files or folders over to the queue, I get a warning message saying that it contains unsupported media.
I'm guessing this is because it is looking for a camera and there is no camera?
I currently have a workaround where I convert the MTS file using third-party trial software, but before I go and buy another piece of software, is there any way I can import these files from within FCE?

Still grayed out, from the top level on down. I've tried each level. I must not have a complete directory tree then.
My structure is:
PRIVATE > AVCHD > AVCHDTN / BDMV / IISVPL > …
Each of the slashes represents a separate folder, and the MTS files are stored in the BDMV > STREAM folder.
I'm told by the camera owner that "PRIVATE" is what the camera automatically names the entire thing and that everything contained within it are the complete contents of the drive. He says that he copies the same thing to a USB drive and it opens fine for him.

  • How to import .mpg files into FCE ?

I have succesfully installed the MPEG StreamClip & flip4mac into my iMac. So now I can both play wmv files on my iMac as well as importing wmv files into iMovie & FCE.
But now I have another problem:
    1) How do I play mpg files on my iMac ?
    2) How do I bring import mpg files into FCE ?
    Thank you.

QTPro gives you many more capabilities than the free player, but I don't think you need it to do anything you've described. You DO need the MPEG-2 Playback component. I'd start there, then see if you need any of the options provided by QTPro.
    Hi there,
I have purchased the MPEG-2 Playback component from the Apple Store.
I can now convert the mpg files to mov using the MPEG StreamClip.
However, I cannot playback the original mpg files using QuickTime Player. I can only playback the original mpg files if I click on the mpg file then goto more info & change open with MPEG StreamClip.
But how do I open with QuickTime MPEG-2 playback ? I do not even know where the OS installed the MPEG-2 Playback component to ?
    Thanks

  • Importing H.264 into FCE without decoding/re-encoding. How?

QuickTime cannot open my Handycam VOB files (mpgv/a52) so I'm using ffmpegX to convert them to H.264 (4000+ kbps). when I import the H.264 files into FCE, FCE insists on decoding the files, taking a long time to do so and producing very large in-project media files. I tried converting to the DV format; same problem.
I seem to remember with iMovie that one could place their media files into the project package in a specific format and iMovie wouldn't re-encode them. if I'm importing H.264 files into FCE, what format should they be exactly (video and audio), and how could I import them into an FCE project without FCE decoding/re-encoding them? I'd prefer to use H.264/Dolby+AC3 if possible.
    sincerely,
    Gregory

Ok, you should be converting directly to DV or Apple Intermediate Codec if you intend to edit the video in FCE. Not to H.264 and then importing the H.264 into FCE. You're going from one highly compressed format to another highly compressed format and then FCE is trying to render it into something it can edit.
Also, you can't directly import 5.1 audio into FCE. Even though FCE supports up to 99 audio tracks in a project, you can only import or export a single stereo pair at a time. There are ways to trick it out, but you can't do 5.1 all at once directly in FCE.
Have you tried MPEG Streamclip instead of ffmpegX to do your conversions?

  • Ingesting .mts AVCHD files into FCE

Is it possible to ingest avchd (.mts) files using Log and Transfer? Reading from past discussions it seems I need a converter. I used voltaic with my old powermac but I thought with an intelmac I would not need to convert .mts files, besides if I connect my videocamera (canon hf200) I am able to import and convert to .mov without the need of any application, however it seems FCE cannot read .mts files saved on disc. I am bit confused, any suggestion?
    Thanks

I actually use MTS files frequently on FCE. I use a Panasonic HMC40 camera. Just go to log and transfer, plug in your card or your camera, it will then take a little bit to figure all the clips out, then it will show all your clips and you then choose which ones you want then convert, with my comp it takes a long time to convert and is usually about 1GB per min of footage but it's a really high quality camera. Anyways I hope that helps. FCE does support MTS files, but not JUST mts, you also need the "stream" data as well to convert it.

  • Trying to Import M2TS Files into FCE 4

I read an answer by Tom Wolsky about bringing in AVCHD files that were already downloaded on another system. Tom suggested using MPEG Streamclip to do the work. I downloaded Streamclip and tried to open an M2TS file and convert but I get an error trying to read the M2TS file. I then went to the SQUARED 5 web site, and the supported formates look like it takes M2T but not M2TS. I am thinking because I have a SONY HDR-SR8 HDD camera, the M2TS is the Sony format, and the M2T is probably other AVCHD formats.
Has anyone tried to bring in just the M2TS files? I know that I have posted a few other posts, but after re-reading the requirements, it seems like there is an issue with M2TS and not M2T.
Hope I made this clear. Thanks for any advice on this.
    Gary

I am a noob to Mac, but largely based the switchover from PC for video editing. I have the HDR-SR1 and FCE4. After running into the majority of the stumbling blocks listed in this forum, I have been successful with the following approach - therefore I offer it as a suggestion.
I chose to store the raw footage to an external (target) hard drive.
    1) record footage (in HD)
    2) connect HDR-SR1 via USB, ('no name' disk image on desktop)
    3) on the target drive create a folder name (usually just date range, e.g. 200612_200701) which covers the date range of the footage to be copied
    4) copy an image of the ENTIRE contents of the HDR-SR1 harddrive, such that ALL file name and structure is recreated and paste to the newly created folder
    5) clear the hard drive of the camcorder (using Sony interface after disconnect - just being overly careful)
    6) Use "log and transfer" function and locate the desired folder (e.g. 200612_200701) and click on the Open button - voila! The files are available to be imported to scratch files in FCE4. (The scratch files take up a significant amount of disk space.)
By using a new folder to copy to each time, I can ensure a comprehensive copy of the camcorder contents. The FCE software seems happy enough. There may be an easier way, but this works consistently for me.
    Hope this helps... good luck!

  • Importing AVCHD files into CS4 4.1.0 question

I have a Mac Pro and I am using Premiere 4.1.0 and am using a Sony HDR-SR8 video cam which produces AVCHD video.  When I copy the folder off the camera to the hard drive, then import the video files, they look grainy in the viewer.
I also have Final Cut Express and tried bringing in the same files, but FCE converts to Quicktime and once the files are dropped in the viewer, they look great.
Why do the files brought into Premiere CS4 look lousy?

Not from the camera you use, but from several others, Sony Z1, Canon H1, and the like and it always looks very sharp.
However, I hate Mac's, so I use a PC. Maybe that is the distinguishing difference.

  • Cannot import .mov files into FCE

I bought a new Kodak Zi8 pocket video camera to use to finish a video project because my right hand is in a cast and I cannot use my HD video camera. Unfortunately for me, I have a deadline to meet.
I shot video at 720p and tried to import it into FCE 4.0.1 to edit using Log and Transfer and got the warning message, '"863_0156.MOV" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.' I also shot video at 1080p and, of course, cannot import it into FCE either using Log and Transfer.
I am still a relatively new FCE user and would appreciate any suggestions you can give me. I looked in Tom's book (FCE 4 Editing Workshop)on page 73. Will Quicktime Pro 10 convert the files? If so what is the procedure?
I have seen similar questions in this discussion forum on importing .mov files, but I haven't seen a solution that works for me. How can I convert the .mov files to get Log and transfer in FCE to accept them?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
This pocket camera record H.264. So the material as to be converted to a format supoported natively by FCE as Apple Intermediate Codec 1080. Search this forum with +MPEG streamclip+ keyword.

  • Any advice on importing wmv files into FCE?

I'd like to bring in some wmv files into a sequence in FCE. Of course this format is not directly supported. i'm having a rough time finding a third party app to use on my mac that would convert wmv files into something importable such as .mov. Any suggestions? Thanks.

flip for mac is a quicktime plug that works in all qt based applications. with it, you can open a wmv in quicktime and export it as a .mov
While I use it the other way round, to export wmv's for the web it will do what you want.
be aware that wmv is a highly compressed format and transcoding it, even to a higher size file for example dv will look horrible.
wmv is meant to be a delivery codec, not an editable one.

  • Audio level difference of 18dB after importing AVCHD file in FCE

After I import an AVCHD clip via Log & Transfer in FCE4 the right audio channel is 18dB louder than the left audio channel. Effectively the sound comes through the right channel.
When I import the same clip in iMovie '08 the channels are equally loud in iMovie.
When I export this clip from iMovie '08 to FCE XML, then import it into FCE, the audio channels are equally loud in FCE!!!
    Can anybody explain this?
The preference setting for audio input in FCE is set to Matrix Audio.
Clips are shot with Panasonic HDC-SD1.

    Try plain stereo.

  • In PSE 9.0, how do I import from files into organizer without duplicating images already in the orga

In PSE 9.0, how do I import images from hard drive files into the organizer without importing duplicated files already in the organizer or
How do I find duplicated images within the organizer so that I can delete them?

I imported a bunch of photos from iPhoto 4 on one machine to iPhoto 5 on another, expecting it to catch duplicates, without testing beforehand (duh). It didn't catch them, and now I'm trying to figure out which were the imported ones so I can delete them.
As this looks to be a laborious task if done from within iPhoto, and deleting the files via the Finder is a no-no -- assuming I can even identify the duplicates -- is there a third-party app, or even a good trick, for doing this?

  • Black block when importing LiveType file into FCE

    Help.
I've gone through all of the training videos and was really excited to use LiveType on my new MacBook Pro. However, FCE imports my files as black screens (none of my LiveType data shows up). Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

    Thanks. It worked!

  • Importing AVCHD Light into FCE cuts duration by half - plays 2x speed

I just got a new Panasonic Lumix GF1 camera. It films in AVCHD Light format.
When I import the video with Final Cut Express 4.0.1 using the Log and Transfer the duration is cut in half and the resulting import plays at 2 times the speed and the audio is out of sync. The audio is not playing at 2x speed.
The clips play fine in the Log and Transfer preview menu.
If I open the source MTS file in VLC it has the following attributes
    Codec H264
    Resolution: 1280x720
    Frame rate 119.880120
The frame rate shown in VLC seems to be incorrect. The camera manual says that it records in 60fps but VLC seems to show that it is double that.
I have converted some clips to mp4 using handbrake and handbrake seems to be fine with the Camera's MTS file and the resulting mp4 is fine.
So I am confused if FCE can't handle it or maybe the Camera's MTS files are marked in some way with the incorrect fps.

The final cut Express documentation seems to say that 60 fps it is supported. After some googling around I am getting conflicting answers.
I ended up using imovie to convert to AIC and FCE seems to be ok with it now. It looks like imovie brought it down to 30 fps.
I am a video newb so I am not sure what is going on.

  • Importing .pst files into mail without a PC

Hello to all those lovely Mac users,
I've got an Outlook .pst file on CD. How can I import mail messages
b without having access to a PC???
The only OS X email client I'm aware of that supports .pst files is entourage 2004 + pst importer for entourage. I, however, only have Office X which is not supported by pst importer. Nor is Office 2004 Test drive.
Thunderbird for OS X is a dead end as well.
    Please help me!

You should probably take a look at one of the following options:

  • How to import AVCHD movies into iPhoto without wavy lines.

Seems to be quite the common plight but few resolved answers (that I could find) ...
Importing videos in to iPhoto from Sony Handycam "works", but upon viewing the quality is garbage with lines, shooting in 1080i mode at 30 fps.
I know I can import into iMovie but because it converts that to AIC it chews up way more space. I've also played around with ClipWare, but that only seems to reduce the distraction slightly.
Any other automated software out there to do this? Seems like a good market to make some serious coin for whoever comes up with software for it.

Lighten up Francis! It was meant to be lighthearted observation of some frustrating facts. Didn't you see my smiling winking emoticon?
It is cathartic to vent a little now and then by the way, you should try it sometime.
I originally posted to confirm for others that the bug was still there.
Your post was not helpful since you simply told me to stop doing what I need to do. I understand that is all the advice you could give since there is no workaround for the bug. I explained why changing to another video format would not meet my needs.
Your suggestion for contacting Apple directly and giving feedback is good but at this point we are probably having a tempest in a teacup over nothing since it will be a whole new ballgame in Photos.
So long and have a nice day.

  • Importing .wmv Files Into FCE Using ffmpegX  ??????

    Was it a dream?
A month or so ago I converted some .wmv files to use in FCE and iMovie.
I am absolutely certain that I used ffmpegX.
Yesterday I tried to convert some more but couldn't! I tried every possible format setting I could find - but no luck.
Did I dream it? The wmv/FCE/iMovie movies are there for all to see.
The only other conversion programs I have are HandBrake and Toast but I am sure I didn't use those.
    Any ideas?
    Ian.
