Importing .avi DV movies captured on PC using winDV failed!

I just thought i'd have a go at creating a video out of the footage that i shot at christmas this year. My PC has the most hdd space and so i imported it over firewire using winDV. This has made a set of .avi files with the dv codec inside.
Importing these movies into imovie and telling it to move the files took a while, mostly making thumbnails. Frustratingly after finishing all i'm left with is identical 13second clip previews to scrub over, its a clip from somewhere near the end of the sets of files that i imported in one go. Basically although the actual clips are quite long i can only play through them up to the 13 second limit the borked thumbnails have created.
Looking in my imovie created folders i spot the following
~/Movies/iMovie/Events.localized/Xmas 2007/iMovie Cache/Cache.mov
is a small file that is the full clip set all 50minutes of it.
~/Movies/iMovie/Events.localized/Xmas 2007/iMovie Thumbnails/xmas07
is a quicktime movie that is the offending clip section that makes up all my thumbnail images and is 13 seconds long
~/Movies/iMovie/Events.localized/Xmas 2007/iMovie Thumbnails/iMovie Cache/Cache.mov
is the same short quicktime movie, small file so i assume its a reference to the xmas07 file i described above.
Is this the problem somehow its using this cache instead of the correct cache under the iMovie Cache folder directly under the Xmas 2007 event folder.
I want to know what i can do to fix this, and why this happened in the first place. I do have perian installed to get better playback of files that i usually work with.
Is this a known bug, could anyone else see if they could recreate it?
Cheers

yes, i know .avi support on mac varies, especially without perian, but then thats more down to the codecs inside rather than the .avi files themselves. My stills camera files imported easily into imovie and worked fine, these are also .avi files i think.
Converting to quicktime is nice and quick, and i could try doing this, a lot of files to do though, wish i could do them all in a batch.. sadly automator doesn't seem to have a save-as action for quicktime, as far as i can tell. i'd really like to try and remux the files into .dv containers as the mac would expect but i'm not having any look finding a program to do this on windows or mac.

  • Exporting  to .avi or .mov format

How can I export and iMovie to a .avi or .mov format? For use by others with PC's , etc.

both, avi and mov are no formats, just containers, some say wrappers...
in the share/expert settings dialog, you're offerd with zillions of options...
PC users need to install the latest version of QuicktimeForWindows, free for download at apple.com...
avi is little supported on Mac... old school & wrong side of the street..
think about investing into some plug-ins from www.flip4mac.com …

  • Unable to import FCE movie captured using firewire

We are using firewire output from Sony 2100 camera and cpturing it using Final Cut Express, however when using Final Cut Pro X to import the movie,
FCP X crashes.  Tried many options on the import menu, however are resulted in the same thing, crash.
Removing the audio from the movie FCP X accepted the movie with no problem.  If Final Cut Express can import the same movie with no problem way
can't the new Final Cut Pro X do the same.  We need help, Thanks.

Can you open the file in QuickTime Player?
If so, click Window/Inspector, and tell us what video and audio codecs are listed by "format:".
If the audio and video formats look ok, then I would check for chapter tracks, closed captioning tracks, etc. Extra tracks would make the movie uneditable in iMovie.

  • Capturing images from avi or mov in QT

What's out there to capture single images in jpeg format for an avi or mov file that I can play through qt pro ?
    thanks

What's out there to capture single images in jpeg format for an avi or mov file that I can play through qt pro ?
Not sure if you are referring to a single JPEG image (as for a poster image) here or a JPEG image sequence.
In the former case, you can use QT 7 Pro "Movie to Picture" option to export a single frame to a PCT image file (with or without compression) which, if double-clicked will then open in Preview and allowing you to re-save the image in several image formats including JPEG. If you want to go directly to a JPEG image and have the free MPEG Streamclip application installed, use it.
In the latter case, use the QT 7 Pro "Movie to Image Sequence" export option to save a sequence of JPEG images to folder using the "Options" palette set the image frequency.

  • Importing AVI movies to Itunes ver 6

How do i import avi movies from my hard drive into Itunes 6.I have tried dragging and dropping into the movies folder but to no avail.do i have to convert them to another format and what programme would I need to do this?

.avi is not one of the few formats that iTunes supports. Use Google, there should be a bunch of programs that convert from .avi to mp4 or other iTunes/iPod compatible formats.

  • IMovie HD refuses to import .MOV clips that it used to import.

I've got an odd problem. Doing a search didn't turn up anything relevant to my situation so I'm gonna try to pick some brains on here.
My Problem: My version of iMovie(5.0.2) no longer recognizes .mov clips that it used to. Meaning that when I try to import clips using settings that worked previously, I am now confronted with an Error during import message that reads "The file could not be imported: Unknown Error". Two things have changed since I last made a project.
1.) I have added a microphone that now allows me to record stereo audio. I don't think this is the culprit.
2.) I updated to 10.6.6 Recently. I think this may be what messed things up.
After trying to Drag and also import clips through the menu with no success, I tried to import clips that I have used before under the exact same conditions and was greeted with the same error. This is importing using the HDV 720p setting. If I try to import new or old clips using the standard DV (16:9) setting then everything works.
These same clips are able to be imported into iMovie '09 with no trouble but I am uncomfortable with that interface. Is there anything I can do to continue to work in iMovie HD or would I just be better off with getting used to iMovie 09?
    Thank you for any replies.

I have Mac 10.6.6 and use iMovie 05 transferring it to iDVD 08. It is getting less easy to do, but usually i make the movie in 05, complete with chapter marking and press the export to DVD.
The file for the Movie I have made is saved automatically in the Movie folder on my owner/home page. To get it out to iDVD 08 open 08 and select create new project and click save This puts a small file into Documents, However to get your work into the new DVD select import>video and when the screen opens for you to find it go to your movie folder in your owners area and click to open the file. It works, but there is usually a problem somewhere along the line. Usually a different one each time, occasionally it goes like clockwork. It won't work if you try the drop down 'open' option.
This last time I got so irritated that I've downloaded the last set of film clips to 05 and then transferred them to 08 to compare the results. I still feel that the later versions are less good (?dumbed down) and await to be converted.

    Thank you,
Yes we've done that. They've confirmed a problem with the links/scripts on the note. The 10.1 and up version was not really 10.1 and up.
As they would not have a new version available in time for the move we needed to perform, we switched our approach to using dbms_redefinition instead.
    Thanks for the reply,

  • How to reinstall plugin Media Core CFHD AVI importer 32 and MOV importer 32.pm?

I instralled the After Effects trial program and it was running okay for a few days, then I was hit with a warning to reinstall plugins.  How to reinstall plugin Media Core CFHD AVI importer 32 and MOV importer 32.pm?

    Has anyone figure this out?
I started getting this after installing GoPro Studio 2.
Uninstalling it and even deleting the plugins manually didn't work, and neither did reinstalling AE.
All I could get was stop getting the error message at start-up but the problem is that any .AVI file that I import only plays audio, no video.
    Please, any help appreciated.

when I import a Quick Time movie into the timeline using Final Cut Express, why does it need rendering?

Because your clip properties do not match your sequence settings.
It will help a lot if you provide details ...
    FCE Easy Setup
Sequence settings (vid rate, frame size, compressor)
Source of your clips (camcorder make/model, etc)
Clip properties (vid rate, frame size, compressor)

  • How do I convert MP4 file to AVI or MOV using MacBook Pro (2010)

I am 10.6.4 new user on a new MacBook Pro. This is my first Mac computer.
I want to convert a MP4 video file to AVI or MOV file type. How would I do this on my new Mac? Documentation says I have Quicktime X, but I cannot find Quicktime X on my system. When I try to load Quicktime 7 Pro, my system says I have Quicktime X and cannot load Pro. Apple websites say Pro version will allow me to convert the MP4 files. Anyone have any experience or ideas on what I should do? How do I find Quicktime X? Will it do the conversion for me? Thanks

Use MPEG Streamclip, or open the QuickTime Player from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, installing this software if needed.

  • Artifacts in Using Save As for AVI to MOV Conversion?

When I SAVE AS a compressed avi file to mov, I am seeing artifacts (they look like interlacing errors) in the final mov file, vs the same frames in the .avi file.  Can I avoid this somehow?  The avi file was compressed with the BlackMagic Intensity code (I think it's motion jpg too).
The file sizes are the same.
Bummer, I bought Quicktime Pro just for this.  Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Can anyone here tell me why two duplicate laptops treat the avi-to-mov conversion so differently and why I must export at 480p?
As to QT playback, either the codec component configuration is different on each system or the the AVI file contains a legacy video codec that is turned on for system "A" but left off for system "B" but which is included in the Perian bundle installed on system "B." With reguard to the forced conversion rather than a simple "Save As..." action, please confirm the video codec name given in the "Inspector" window for each system. I suspect that either the video codec is different on each system or that the Perian version of the same codec with a different name may be forcing the "Export" conversion.

  • Importing AVI

Hi im a Newbe here coming from the world of Audio Edeting.
I have to import AVI Video files (DV-PAL 25) in Final Cut. there are a few problems now. first FC says these files are not optimized for fc, so how to optimize them? those filse been captured in windows via premiere. so what are the most important thinks i hav to know importing avi in final cut.
ah and is there a way to export them with compressor as a avi again. im only able to make mov files.
    thanks for any awnser.....

    Hi,
AVIs are not best for use with FCP, however, you could ignore that warning and edit your AVIs with no insurmountable issues or convert the AVIs to QTs. but that may add undesired compression steps.
Yes Compressor allows you to compress as AVI:
In Compressor settings tab there's a button with a plus icon on the top right corner. Click it and in the popdown menu choose Quicktime Export Components.
You've just created a new untitled setting. It sits at the bottom of the settings in the untitled folder.
Double click it and/or see it in the inspector window. Give it a name and in the encoder type choose AVI.
Now if you click Options button below you can change a number of settings. Remember, the higher the bit rate the better the video will look but greater wil be the size of the video.
Do some tests to find best settings.

  • Issues importing AVI files into iPhoto

    Hi there,
I am trying to import the videos I've taken with my Olympus Digicam over the weekend into iPhoto but for the longer ones it doesn't work. When I select the movies to import it looks like it's doing it but then, after a while, iPhoto displays an error message stating the following:
The following file could not be imported. (The import failed.)
As already mentioned, the issues I have are with the AVI files, and they are pretty long movies...some up to 4 or 5 minutes I think.
Has anyone got an idea how I can get them to import and play in iPhoto?
    Thanks heaps.
    Nadine

    Nadine
iPhoto will baulk at importing longer movies from a camera. The trick is to copy the movies to your desktop using the Finder (if your camera appears on the desktop) or Image Capture (in your apps folder) and then importing them to iPhoto.
