Importing AVI files into PE 7

Newbie poster here, hope I'm doing this right.
I am using Premiere Elements 7 on a Vista computer. I imported some files from a DVD (which had files I had copied from VHS), then trimmed to the part I wanted to keep. I exported, which is what I thought I needed to do to make the output readable on a DVD player, as opposed to saving as a PE project. The only option for format was AVI, so I picked that. I then tried to read back into PE, but it says that file format isn't supported and needed the codec. I searched the Adobe Help files (which I admit I had trouble finding my way around in), and found information about compatible video formats with PE7. AVI is listed, but the help document also said that when connected to the internet, the appropriate format files will automatically be downloaded. So, I'm not sure what I need to do to be able to read my AVI files.
I hope there is a simple answer to this; I'm trying to convert old home movies from VHS and have a bunch to do, but I don't want to only be able to export to Microsoft AVI format.
Thanks.

Some confusion there, Dan.
1) The ideal format to bring into Premiere Elements is a DV-AVI. That's an AVI that uses the DV codec. There are hundreds of codecs out there, so not every AVI is a DV-AVI, and most will cause nothing but problems in Premiere Elements. That sounds like what's happening when you say "The only option for format was AVI, so I picked that. I then tried to read back into PE, but it says that file format isn't supported and needed the codec."
2) You don't say how you're getting your original files from VHS to DVD but, if you're planning to edit your files in Premiere Elements, this isn't the best way to get them into the program by any means. Since Premiere Elements uses a DV-AVI workflow, everything you put into it (included DVD footage) must be converted by the program to DV-AVI before the program can work with it -- and that can take a lot of resources, can cause quality problems because of the extra conversion and simply isn't a very efficient way to work. Particularly because you will be going from a DVD to an AVI and then back out to a DVD, which means yet another conversion is taking place!
Maybe if I knew more about the hardware/software set-up you're using to capture your VHS I could make a better recommendation. Remember that most under-$100 capture devices are designed pretty much to work with the software that comes with it and aren't compatible with programs like Premiere Elements.
On the other hand, DV bridges (which start at $100-150) can take any input and can capture it as DV-AVIs, perfectly compatible with Premiere Elements. We make some recommendations in the FAQs at the top of this forum.

  • Importing AVI files into Final cut creates a pop

How can I stop getting a popping sound when I import AVI files into Final Cut. I figured it must be the type of file itself but I cant seem to find a free converter to convert my AVIs into what ever is need (which is what? .mov files?)
    Please help

The very basics of non-linear editing is to know what video and audio codecs your particular NLE works with natively. FCP works with many video codecs but only a few audio codecs. Typically it works best with AIFF at 48khz, 16 bit.
You can find out all the various native codecs and formats in the User's Manual, Help Files or by looking through the Easy Setup list.
FWIW, both AVI and MOV are not really codecs at all; they are both merely containers that could contain video and audio made from any number of codecs. So saying you have an AVI file or a MOV file is kind of like saying you have a car ... it doesn't really tell anyone much at all.
Both QuickTime Pro and Compressor (which you most likely already have installed) should be able to convert to a native codec for use in FCP.

  • Importing avi files into jsp pages

hello all. im new to jsp and java. i would like to know how i could import .avi files from my MySQL database (where ive given paths for the avi files) into a jsp page. i am basically trying to make an application that allows users to select particular video files and play them. the user has the ability to upload and delete these videos

    newbie4337 wrote:
im sorry i guess i didn't phrase that properly. i meant to say that i had saved the paths in the database If you have some saved URLs in the database (URLs to where these avi files can be found)
you just need to retrieve the URLs and use them when generating links (<a href="..."></a>) in the html produced by your JSP.
You have already given the paths in the html generated by your jsp? Paths as in URLs?
Then you must already have a servlet deployed that accepts HTTP requests for .avi URLs and reads the relevant .avi from the database and serves back an avi stream with the right mime type (video/x-msvideo) in the headers...
    ([w3schools|http://www.w3schools.com/media/media_mimeref.asp]).
could you give me some more info on that?If the URLs are hosted somewhere else you do not need any of this.

  • Can't import .avi files into Captivate 4

I need some help, I'm getting really frustrated.  My project consists of about 10 short movies (2-3 minutes each) with quiz questions between the movies.  The movies were produced in Adobe Premiere Elements 2 and exported as .avi files.  When I go to import the files, I get this error:  "This AVI file cannot be converted into a Adobe Flash file.  Conversion aborted."
I have tried converting the .avi files into .flv files (using Flash Video Encoder CS3), but that doesn't work for us for two reasons.  Captivate won't display the .flv files while in edit mode; it will only play them after the entire project has been produced.  After the project has been produced, however, the video of the .flv displays, but the audio from ALL of the .flv files in the project plays at the same time, rendering all of the dialogue unintelligible.
I have been trying to solve this problem for a couple of weeks now, but I'm not getting anywhere.  Is there a specific codec I should be trying to use here?  Is there another process I should be using?  Is there a way that I can resolve the .flv issues?

I'm OCD about this sort of stuff, too!
I just insert my .avi files as animations, and that seems to work fine, so I'm no help there.
I don't know enough about codecs to even comment. *sigh*
And, my problem with .flv's has always been the other way around. When I insert an .flv, it always asks for the absolute path (like C:\Videos\VideoName.flv). Then, right before I create the .zip to upload to the LMS, I have to edit the path to VideoName.flv, and then check to make sure the file is on the .zip root, otherwise it won't play on the LMS 'cause it "can't find the file."
Sorry I couldn't be of any more help, but if you're like me, at least you can get your work done while this eats into your mind and eventually drives you crazy. *grin*

  • No video, only audio when importing .avi file into CS2

I recorded 920p footage on a GoPro Hero 3 at 50fps. GoPro recordes MP4 files, I wanted to edit the footage in PP CS2 as it gives me more control than GoPro studio.
I used GoPro Studio to convert the MP4 files into avi files and amended the white balance and saturation etc, as I recorded using Pro Tune which gives a flatter colour profile.
The avi files run well in Windows Media Player (although don't seem to have the clarity of video's on the GoPro website!)
I have then imported the avi files into CS2 to put together the edit and I can only hear the audio and can't see the video in the source stream or the program stream.
I assume I have a setting wrong in CS2, could any one advise what I need to change to get the problem rectified?
I was planning on exporting the finished problem at 720p if makes a differance

    Also, CS2 has a different forum http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_previous

  • Imported .avi files into iPhoto 09 (8.12) but they can't be viewed.  What to do ?

Found a discontinued camera (over eight years old( with built-in memory, similar to a GoPro.   Attached it via USB and it mounted as a drive.  Copied over both jpg and avi files, then imported into iPhoto 09.  From within iPhoto, the jpg's can be viewed of course, but the .avi files give the usual flag that Quicktime cannot read the avi.
The .avi files can easy be viewed by VLC Player outside of iPhoto.
Downloaded and installed Flip4Mac, but still iPhoto doesn't allow launching of the avi files from within iPhoto.
Is this failure because the iPhoto needs to be updated ?  What can be done to view the avi files in iPhoto ?
    Thank you.

Check to see what version of Quicktime Player you have installed on your Mac.  If it's later that V7 download and install version QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later and try again.
Also you might try installing Perian.  Even though it's been discontinued it will work.

  • Issues importing AVI files into iPhoto

    Hi there,
I am trying to import the videos I've taken with my Olympus Digicam over the weekend into iPhoto but for the longer ones it doesn't work. When I select the movies to import it looks like it's doing it but then, after a while, iPhoto displays an error message stating the following:
The following file could not be imported. (The import failed.)
As already mentioned, the issues I have are with the AVI files, and they are pretty long movies...some up to 4 or 5 minutes I think.
Has anyone got an idea how I can get them to import and play in iPhoto?
    Thanks heaps.
    Nadine

    Nadine
iPhoto will baulk at importing longer movies from a camera. The trick is to copy the movies to your desktop using the Finder (if your camera appears on the desktop) or Image Capture (in your apps folder) and then importing them to iPhoto.

  • Can not import avi files into pse12 catalog

I am wondering if any one else is having an issue with importing avi (video files from my Nikon D5000) into the PSE 12 catalog.
Running windows 7 SP1 with all updates.
    Camera is a Nikon D5000
    file type is AVI
Every time I go to import an avi file (either from my SD card or from my HDD) organizer comes up with the message that it has stopped working and windows is looking for a solution.
I do not shoot much video so it is not a large concern but it used to work in previous versions of PSE.
Any and all help with this issue is appreciated.

    Ray
In many instances, a utility software will be bundled in with the camera purchase. Installing that utility software might bring along with it codecs that are needed to work with the video on the computer and in the program. If you do not see or have such a utility software, so much for that idea. If you go after this from the MotionJPEG codec angle, the Morgan MotionJPEG codec has been available online as tryout (later purchase).
    http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/morgan/php/products.php?sProductId=5&sProductSub=download s
    See
M-JPEG-2000 Codec v3 (32 bit and 64 bit) and the associated tab for "Download - trial/demo".
    But, could you clarify on
As soon as I move the avi file off of the sd card the import works.
Given you have the .avi file on the SD card, what is the path to the point where the import works?
That is, where are you moving the .avi file to as it leaves the SD card? Surely not to the hard drive since you wrote.
Also if I go to my hard drive where I saved the avi file and try to import it all by itself, it fails.
I wonder if you are saying that you take it through a route which includes the Video Importer.
    Thanks for the follow ups.

  • Importing .avi file into Premiere CS5 and losing on quality

    Hello Adobe users,
I'm having a problem with importing my material in Premiere CS5. It's file extension is .avi and I'm not sure which step I do wrong to get his but it's pretty important to me to find out what's the problem.
Every time I try to import material which was captured on another computer, I get it all lossy in Premiere and it's really obvious.
Maybe I make mistake with opening new project?
I'm not sure which camera is used, but I'm sure it's Panasonic and it films in cinemascope (widescreen).
I would really appreciate your help here!
    Thanks in advance, Filip!

    Flip,
    Welcome to the forum.
AVI can hold all sorts of things, and those will be all important in addressing your problem. This ARTICLE goes into more detail, and shows how to "peek inside the AVI wrapper." Please let us know what CODEC is used in that file.
How are you Importing/Capturing the AVI file?
    What Sequence Preset was chosen?

  • Importing .avi file into premier pro CS3 without losing quality

I have used CAMStudio to capture datalogging on my screen. The file size is 1280 x 800 pixels with a frame rate of 200 frames/second. I have tried using virtual dub and many other programs to create an avi file that I can import into premier without losing quality. None of this has worked. I have tried using the forum post http://forums.adobe.com/message/2060872#2060872 but this didn't work for me either. If anyone has a simple solution for this problem I would greatly appreciate it. Even if anyone could suggest a different screen capture program the will smoothly import into premiere without losing quality.

Very recently, Jeff Bellune posted his workflow for Camtasia/CamStudio material. I'd do a Search for "Techsmith" then filter on this forum and on People = Jeff Bellune. IIRC, he basically updated Dan Isaacs' suggestions. I do not think that his techniques were limited to CS4, but could be wrong.
If I can find that post, I'll add the link here. Actually, I need to make sure that I have that link in an article that I did on Camtasia/CamStudio workflow elsewhere.
    Good luck,

  • Importing AVI file into iMovie

I converted an .m4v file (13m31s long) to an .avi file so I can import it into iMovie for editing. All of this completed, I opened iMovie, went File > Import > Movies > ___.avi file. It showed the importing progress, and once it was completed nothing showed up anywhere! I tried 3 times, restarted my computer, updated iMovie, NOTHING! Please help :[

Yes I did try to import the .m4v file first. I used Prism to convert the video file to AVI. I am not entirely sure how to answer your question about the codec, but I believe it is an MPEG-4 ?

  • Cannot import .AVI files into Adobe Premiere CS5

Hello Adobe users, I have recently begun a project within Premiere Pro, and I began importing files into my Premiere project, which I shot using my NS-DV1080P Insignia camcorder. I did some research and discovered that I needed some missing codecs. I found and istalled both codec packs, K-Lite, and ffdshow, and still the problem remains. I have contacted Insignia's help forums about this issue and they advised me to contact Adobe. Did I install the codecs wrong, or is there another problem? Could someone help me on this? Thanks.

After you format your drive to remove those codec packs, you need to find the SPECIFIC codec you need
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
    What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing
    For PC http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en
    For Mac http://mediainspector.massanti.com/
Once you know the SPECIFIC codec used by that camera, come back and ask for more information

  • Importing .avi files into Final Cut

I'm in the process of switching from Adobe Premiere Pro to Final Cut Studio Pro. I have a number of files in .avi format that import but only play audio. The video says "unrendered". When I tried to render, the sys. responded that there was no matching Codec. How does one get the .avi video to import correctly? Will Quicktime Pro solve the Codec problem?
    Thanks

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Perian yet.
    http://perian.org/
Once I installed Perian, all my format conversion issues disappeared. I initially had to convert .avi's created by Camtasia Studio on a windows machine to a QT friendly format. After Perian, they act as native to FCP/QT. Very nice piece of software that will save you a lot of headaches and format conversions (READ: Hard Drive Space)
