Importing avi movies from my Canon camera makes iPhone crash

Every time when i make some movies with my Canon camera (Powershot S2 IS) and I want to import them, together will all my pics on my camera, into iPhoto it makes iPhot crash from the point where it is importing the first AVI movie it comes across.
Now I've successfully imported the movies onto my harddrive now using the Image Capture program, but still when I want to import the movies from my harddrive into iPhoto, or even when i want to play them in Quicktime, it makes iPhoto crash, and also Quicktime crashes when i'm trying to view the movie in there.
can somebody point me to an alternative solution or tell me what's wrong and what i need to fix in order to fix it?

Thanks. I'd love to install that one, but i've heard some stories that this piece of software does quite some harm to some things. I dont remember where i read that or what harm it would do. but i'm sure i've heard it someone say.
can you confirm this? or do you still very much recommend me to install this?

  • IPhoto crashes when importing AVI sequences from Digital Photo camera

I am attempting to use my IPhoto 601.
I have a huge collection of Photos and many AVI sequences taken with my Digital camera (Canon G5).
IPhoto crashes when I attempt to import the video sequences.
    I am getting frustrated here.
    Do you have suggestions?
Should I wait for IPhoto version 10 ?!?!

Are you importing them into iPhoto directly from the camera? If so, you might want to use Image Capture, found in your Applications folder, to import them instead. I download to a folder on my desktop called "Holding" and then drag the images and movies I want to keep into iPhoto.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • Can't import video (.mov) from Coolpix P100 camera to iPhoto

I can't import any .mov files from my Coolpix p100 camera to iPhoto (iPhoto '08, version 7.1.5) Mac OS X 10.4.11. I can import pictures no problem when I use a firewire connection from the camera to my iBook G4. This is the message I get:
    Unreadable files.
The following file could not be imported. (The import failed)
    DSCN0573.MOV
For example, I can see the .mov file under "Information" before I try to import. It says it is a QuickTime movie, 274 MB. I can watch it on my camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Is there a chance the .mov file could be imported via some
third party (free ware) video software into the Mac, such as
VLC or a shareware video utility; perhaps Snapz ProX?
Another idea may be to see if the iMovie software would do it.
This topic has come up several years ago, and depending on
the model or brand of camera in some cases, different paths
were taken to get the product and files to work.
In a few cases, some proprietary software provided limited
support for a camera's feature set; some didn't work for Mac.
When the camera creates a hybrid image file, and their own
software was not available in a Mac format, another may be
available to provide the missing link.
There may be some third-party plug-ins that may allow the
QuickTime you have, to open and view the .mov files; not
sure what exact ones would qualify, however, to do it.
With my cameras, which can create .mov files, I have not
experimented with them; as both are essentially still image
cameras and know the results wouldn't suit my projects.
Hopefully one of the video player software products can help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Question about Imported AVI movies from Digital Cameras

    Hi
I use a Canon "Ixus" series digital camera., the video clips on this camera are AVI (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions).,
My problem is saving edits i do to these video clips in the in the same original format when opening them in QT, unlike photos Qt makes you save AS instead of saving modifications to the original file.
Again, if Qt does not allow you to save the edits to the clip itself but rather asks you what you want to save it as, and i can not find the same exact QT which is "AVI" (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions)., then what is the correct format to avoid any loss in quality?
    Can anyone advise?

i just have to rotate these clips, they where shot sideways.
I understand - however, video is a horizontal format; when you rotate your file 90 degrees either the 640 vertical dimension must shrink to 480 pixels which will leave black borders on each side of the image or you expand the 480 horizontal dimension of your clip to 640 pixels and you crop of the top and bottom of your image.
Here is how to do it: How can I rotate rectangular pixel DV material 90° while maintaining the correct aspect ratio and interlacing? at http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#vert-horizrotate
    Good luck.

  • How to import a movie from a digital camera that cannot be connected

The friend who recorded my wedding has a camera that doesn't have the connection cable for the laptop, but only for the TV. Is there a way to download the movie in the Powerbook. I need to import it in iMovie because i had to mix it with another video that my mother did.
I connected the camera to the dvd recorder of the tv and I save the movie as video, but now it is a dvd and I cannot use the content of the dvd and work on it with iMovie, can I?
    Thanks
    Silvia

If your mother shot a video with a camcorder which can be connected to iMovie ..i.e; a 'miniDV' or 'Digital-8' camcorder which has a 'DV' or 'i.Link' digital connection.. then your friend's camcorder can probably be connected to that ..probably via a small adaptor and the cable which connects it to the TV (..which may be an 'RCA'-plug 'composite video' connection).
So your friend's video could probably be played straight onto a miniDV tape which could then be imported into iMovie. Or it may be possible to pass the "TV-style" composite video signal straight through the other (your mother's?) camcorder and directly into iMovie that way, without even needing to copy it onto another tape.
You need to find out the make and model number of your friend's camcorder - as catspaw suggests; it may be perfectly compatible with iMovie anyway! - and also the details of the one your mother used, too.
Or just look at the actual physical tapes:
..if they look like this: second picture down, on the left on this page ..that's a miniDV tape ..that WILL import straight into iMovie using a miniDV camcorder. (Here's that pic again:)
..and if one of those tapes is a 'Digital-8' tape, and looks like this then it might also be imported straight into iMovie with a suitable camcorder. (Here's that tape again:)
So you may be able to get the original footage straight into iMovie, rather than having to use an extra program like 'MPEG Streamclip' or 'Handbrake' to extract the footage off a DVD.

  • Importing AVI movies to Itunes ver 6

How do i import avi movies from my hard drive into Itunes 6.I have tried dragging and dropping into the movies folder but to no avail.do i have to convert them to another format and what programme would I need to do this?

.avi is not one of the few formats that iTunes supports. Use Google, there should be a bunch of programs that convert from .avi to mp4 or other iTunes/iPod compatible formats.

  • How to import AVCHD movies from Canon HR10 (mini DVD) to iMac / iMovie?

I have just bought an iMac (I am a PC user for a very long time and not yet familiar with the Mac software), and I am having troubles with some basic tasks: I want to transfer AVCHD movies from my Canon HR10 (mini DVDs) to my iMac / iMovie. However, the iMac / iMovie does not seem to recognize the camera when I connect it via the USB cable, i.e. nothing happens at all (the disc is finalized, and the camera is in "Play" mode). I have also tried to import the contents of the mini DVDs via a network harddisk, but iMovie does not seem to recognize the format?! I don't know what I am doing wrong?

I think iMovie will want to see the camera as a device before it will do the import.
Not sure you can import direct from the card, as your experiments have shown.
It may be due to the processing of the video as it comes off the camera.
Other people may have a solution though.

Cannot transfer videos taken from my Canon camera(MOV files) to the iPad 4. They have previous with no problems at all. Is this an update issue? I tried to sync them over using iTunes last night but it says that they cannot be played on the device. But they have previously

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • IMovie doesn't import all movies from iPhoto - at least one solution

I noticed that iMovie 08 imported my movies from iPhoto, but strangely not all of them. A quick search of the support forums indicated many others were having the same issue.
After comparing file attributes of movies that were importing successfully into iMovie versus movies that didn't show up, I found that a rogue character ("&") was preventing iMovie from importing the file properly.
Renaming the title in iPhoto does not resolve the issue, since the file name (in Finder) remains the same. However, if I make a copy of that file outside of the iPhoto Library, rename it in Finder, then re-import it back into iPhoto, then iMovie will see it. I didn't rename the movie file inside of the iPhoto Library for fear of corrupting the library structure.
I found this to work at least with my .avi files. I still have the same issue as everyone else with iMovie not importing .mpg files that play properly in iPhoto.

Good thinking! The only way to change the filename in iPhoto is to export the movie file, import it back in, copy over comments, keywords from the old to the new movie, and then delete the old movie.
