In that case, you are left with working with the .VOB's. Remember that that material has already been pretty heavily compressed to MPEG-2 already. Quality has been compromised. This will become evident, if you then output to DVD-Video again.
Other than the mechanics of ripping the MPEG-2 from the .VOB, you might want to consider another NLE program. There are some, that will allow for "smart rendering," which will not re-Transcode material that has not been altered. I do not have a list of which NLE's will allow for this, unfortunately. I have heard that Sony Vegas offers this but do not know, as I have never used it. Some folk have mentioned a Corel product, but again, I have no experience. You might want to Google for "smart rendering," and see which programs show up. Also, others here might well have good recs., and experience. I just do not, as I seldom am faced with having to edit from .VOB's. When I am, I just point out the quality hit, and urge the client to get the original material. Guess I'm just lazy. Heck, I might even have a program that does do smart rendering, and just do not know it... ?
Good luck,
Hunt

    Sure.
Choose Share>Export Using QuickTime.  Then select Sound to AIFF from the Export dropdown menu.
The resulting will be an audio only AIFF file.  The Sound to AU or Wave work in the same way and will create audio files of those file types.

The Flip Video camcorder records or "captures" video in MPEG-4 advanced simple profile format, saved as an AVI file.

  • Importing as MPEG audio instead of MPEG video

I have MPEG Movie Clip (.mpg) files from my Sony camcorder which I am trying to backup to DVD's.  When I import them some are importing as MPEG video correctly and some are appearing as MPEG audio incorectly.
The ones showing as audio files are defienlty video files as can play them in windows media player but for some reason only the audio is being imported.
Any ideas on why this is happening and how can be rectified.
Thanks - please can someone help - this has been taking me ages to resolve.  The sony software is rubbish - hence using encore.

    Hi guys,
Thanks for your prompt advice - I am using CS4 version.
I am trying to create dvd’s from my video files which I created on my sony hard disk camcorder so that I can play them on my dvd player.  I am in UK so require PAL format.
So I need to use Premiere Pro – is that right?.  So do I export from Premiere Pro to Encore whilst they are both open?  Can I not just create the dvd’s in Premiere Pro – I don’t need fancy menus.
I am confused why some appear in Encore correctly as video but others as audio.  When I play the files from explorer they open in windows media player and play as a video.
I am really new to this so apologies for the basic questions.
    Thanks

  • Can't Import .avi xvid file with Premiere Elements 11

I just purchased Premiere 11, and it won't import an .avi xvid file. The codec is installed as reported by G-Spot. And the file imports to Win Movie Maker just fine. Any known problems here?
    Thanks

I have used Premiere Elements 11 for a few years and never had any problems with codecs, it ran .avi files fine, but then my hard drive started sending failure eminent warnings so I saved everything I could (for some reason I was never able to save a backup with my old system), I got a new hard drive, loaded a clean new Windows 7 install and built my system from there.
When I got to the Premiere Elements 11 and used it I noticed it came up with the "no codec for .avi" message that I had never seen before and would not play the same .avi movies that I had played with it hundreds of times before.
I was a little baffled so I went back and installed my old Premiere Elements 8 that I used to use and same codec message came up.
I remembered that I had some other video players installed on my old system so I went back and installed the old players one by one.
    1. Cyberlink PowerDVD from the original Dell install didn't fix the codec problem.....
    2. I had the "REAL" player on my old system so I installed it next and it didn't fix the codec problem....(The new "REAL" player live is a little to aggressive for me so I uninstalled it when it didn't fix my problem)
    3. I had Quicktime installed so I installed it again and BINGO, my Premiere Elements 11 now plays .avi files like it used to.
I won't guarantee it will work for everyone but the basic Quicktime player is free so it won't hurt to try it (And it definitely worked for me)

  • Audio only on a video clip

    Hello gang,
Hope someone can answer this question.  I took a series of video clips over a week.  After I began putting them together, I somehow "lost" video.
They show up as a video clip in the menu screen, but when I go to play them it is only the audio portion that shows up.
Then after I let it play the clip "loses" the video pic associated with the clip and shows the "audio" note.  so I guess its now an
audio clip and I lost my video?  Any ideas from the smart crowd????  I am definately not in that group.  very novice!\
    Thanks,
    coach

I was able to bring up the video clips, edit them (using PE7) and save them as a project.  A couple days later, I went to view them and they showed up as audio only.
    Coach,
These two lines cause me to wonder a bit. I wonder if you are looking at, and trying to play the proper files. Let me give a bit of background, just so we're both on the same page. First a few questions: When you transfered the files from the SD card, what format did they appear as? Where did you copy them to? Would you download and install G-Spot. Run one of those files, the ones that you copied over from the SD card, and see what that program shows, expecially the upper right of the screen, where the CODEC used is shown. There will be both the "name" of the CODEC and the full specifications of it. That info might contain an answer for us. Next, look to the lower left of the G-Spot screen. You'll see two columns of little squares, with the number 1 in them. One is for Video, and one for Audio. Hit the #1 for Video, and you *should* get a box below, with #2 in it. Hit it, and you *should* get a box with a #3 in it. Again, hit #3, and you'll get a tiny viewer at the upper-left of the screen. Your Video *should* play. You may also need to render the Audio too.
Now, for the info: In PE, when you Save, you are only saving a Project file, with the .PREL extension. It is only a database, with no media in it, only links to media. There are also some Audio Conforming files, that appear in the PE Project folder structure, that will have the same filename, as your media files, but will have the .WAV extension. These are only Audio files. There will be some much smaller files there, with .PEK extensions. These are the Waveform Display.
PE is a non-destructive editor, in that it does not alter the original media files. They *should* be intact, as you copied them from the SD card. It would be easy to accidently play, say the conformed Audio files (remember, same filename, but with the .WAV extension*). You *should* be able to play your original (actually the copies that you made from the SD card) with no problem. If they play only Audio, and you have opened the right files, then you likely do not have the proper CODEC on your machine. That's what paragraph two is all about. and we'll have that answer.
Let us know what G-Spot says, and good luck,
    Hunt
    * If you have your OS's Folder Options to not show file extensions, please change that setting. You definitely want to see the file extensions, especially as many of your files will have the same filename, with NLE work.

  • Importing AVI; no audio

I'm getting no audio when importing AVIs from Camtasia (TechSmith + MPEG Layer 3)... any particular compression that's needed afterwards to get it to work in PP?

DV codec with uncompressed PCM audio is the best choice for Premiere. Problem is, I don't that that's an option with Camtasia. I myself prefer a hardware scaler solution.

  • How do I show still photos with audio-only portion of video?

My raw video is an interview with a talking head. I want the audio portion of the video to continue (with video portion not visible) while I show photos relating to what the head is talking about. How do I do this?

Drag the photo onto the frame where you want it to start.
[See Karsten Schluter's blog for a bug I found and how I got around it.|http://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/im08tricks] Scroll down to "the many photos over a clip bug"
    Another way:
If you want all slides and no video, you can drag just the audio track into your project by selecting it in the Event and holding down Command and Shift while you drag it into the project.
[Here is a blog entry describing this|http://imovie08.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-extract-audio-from-clip.html]
Finally, you could upgrade to iMovie 09 where this is all much easier.

  • Importing changes the audio quality of original video

When I import a video into a new project the audio sampling rate of the video goes down and the audio channel changes to mono though the video is stereo.
I have tried creating new projects changing the sequence presets to ones that include the higher sample rates and stereo, but this didn't work.
More info on the original raw video:
    AVI
    Frame size: 1280x720
    Frame rate: 29/frames per second
    Data rate: 5000kbps
    Total bitrate 5192kbps
    Audio:
    Bit rate: 192 kbps
    Channels: 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate 44kHz
When I drag and drop this video into the project section of premiere, and I click the "Info" tab, I notice that the audio is "11025 Hz - 16-bit - Mono" which is different from the original video.
Does anyone know why this is and how I can fix it?
    Thanks!

It might help if you were to post a screenshot with the
full details (codecs, etc.) of the .avi file in question.

  • IMac quicktime movies [HD] play audio only on PC (video is green)

We have an iMac w/two 500 GB external drives for video storage and a 1 TB TimeCapsule.  The iMac recently stopped running and failed to boot; after opening and reseating the memory, it is back up and running, but fails to recognize either external drive.  In a panic, we copied all the quicktime movies (all our kids baby movies) from the TimeCapsule backups to a separate PC for backup.
On the PC, the movies play and we hear the audio, but the video is just green.  The same movie plays fine on the iMac, even when playing from the PC hard drive.

With some googlefu I have found the problem, which lies in the icod or Apple Intermediate Codec which was used to encode the movies when they were imported from my HD camcorder.
Unfortunately, Apple saw fit to use a proprietary codec on my personal files, limiting their use elsewhere, without any obvious notification before the files were removed from the source device to make space for new movies.  Now I have 550 GB of quicktime movie files readable only with a Mac-based product.

  • Can iTunes import 5.1 Audio CDs (basically a DVD)

I have picked up some new albums recently and they are not being imported by iTunes. Some are the DualDisc format. CD on one side and DVD on the other with 5.1 audio. The CD side will import but the other side will not. e.g. Weird Al, Straight Outta Lynwood. Some albums just have the 5.1 Audio format. e.g. Barenaked Ladies, Are Me Deluxe Edition 5.1
I would like to import it for the enhanced audio along with the various videos or extra footage that may exist. At this point I would just be happy if I could just get the audio imported. Is there any way for iTunes to import these formats or will I need a 3rd party application?
      Windows XP Pro

That may work for the dual disc formats. Although I question the point of a video iPod that won't import video. A CD is copywritten material and it will import.
So, for an album that is only in the DVD format like BNL "Are Me Deluxe Edition" there is no way to get it into iTunes and eventually my iPod. iTunes even sells the album in a standard format. Are you saying that I need to buy it a second time for the iPod/iTunes?
