Importing B&Ws glitch

I've been trying to import some black and whites for a while now. Every time they turn out as black (sometimes even "noisy") thumbnails and the photos themselves are extremely low in contrast and negative.
Even weirder, I've tried moving the contrast or brightness sliders from right to left (something someone on some forum recommended) and instead of fixing it, the background or very low contrast areas to begin with would actually disappear and reveal the window behind iPhoto! I.E. there would be a hole in the iPhoto window, so much so that I could actually click through the hole and the window behind would pop up! I find this very odd and interesting...although maybe it's a known glitch.
Anyhow, I've also tried reverting the pictures to their originals (as someone else recommended) but since these photos were literally created in B&W and scanned in B&W there was no original to revert to.
So, I realize this is a known issue, but it appears mine is taking this to a new level perhaps...and it also seems this is a known issue for later versions of iPhoto so Im have a feeling upgrading won't solve anything.

iPhoto is designed around digital cameras and works only with RGB images - not greyscale images
in the future scan using the sRGB color profile
Old Toad has a script that will convert grayscale to sRGB - see tutorial #14 - http://web.me.com/toad.hall/ToadsTutorials/No._14.html

  • Importing Photoshop layer glitch?

I imported a PS file that has 14 layers into AE CS5.
I brought the comp of it into the timeline.
It automatically imported it as a 2 frame comp, which I know I can change.
The problem is that one frame is correct, the next is flipped horizontally?   I haven't added any effects to the comp.
When I lengthened the comp and then stretch timewise all the layers with in it, the first half the all the frames are correct, the second are flipped horizontally.
What is going on? I just want a comp to be 30 seconds and have all the layers within the comp 30 seconds, and I want them all the way I created them, not half flipped horizontally.
Does this sound even remotely familiar to anyone? I've imported a 4 layer layered PSD and didn't have this strange problem.
EDIT: This is because I accidentally had import sequence checked. It was importing a previous version that had the image flipped horizontally.

    Thanks for reporting back.

  • Importing stops at every glitch in tape when using the ADVC300 to imprt vhs

When I import a analog video from VHS or an 8mm with the ADVC300 iMovie stops the import at every glitch in the tape, I am looking for a way to import an entire VHS from beginning to end. Is the a preference setting in iMovie 09 that I can change? Or maybe Final Cut Express?

I have exactly the same problem. I'm importing old VHS which has a lot of bad spots. I have the ADVC300 - default settings.
iMovie seems to be coded to stop importing whenever it sees a break in the tape. I guess for digital media that's a good assumption - but for ratty VHS it's a real problem.
iMovie does better than Quicktime 7 Pro - but neither work very well for this kind of import.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - if I find a solution in the meantime - I'll post it here.

  • SWF Import Glitches

I have a swf file created by exporting from 3D Max via Swift 3D.  The SWF file looks great! No problems. When importing into Flash 5.5 via File > Import, there are glitches in the animation, sections dropping color, etc.
What can I do to have a clean import of my swf into flash?  It's only 60 frames long and the file size is about 1MB.
Note:  Contacted Swift3D and they were able to duplicate the problem in Flash 6. But the problem is on Flash's end because the SWF created works great.

I've solve it myself. Just two days before deadline. Thanks to those who were considering giving me their feedback or suggestions .
And for those who are curious what I did to solve it.  I simple rendered separate objects from 3D Max using Swift3D and output them as swf instead of rendering everything in a single swf. Then I layered them correctly in Flash. No more glitches.  My only guess is Flash did not like so many objects close together in the swf and was dropping colors.  Separating them made flash happy.

  • Glitch when updating to CC2014

    Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone out there is experiencing problems since they updated their CC to CC 2014?
I'm running CC 2014 on a MAC book Pro  OS X Yosemite version 10.10.1
Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
I never had any issues before this latest update. All of a sudden opening up a file creates an error: Could not complete your request because of a program error.
I end up having to to command O, several times in order to access my files and open them. It happens sporadically, that I cannot access them from Photoshop>File>Open or Illustrator>File>Open. ....all of a sudden it's fine...then again I start getting the same error. I was on the phone with support, they didn't see anything wrong when they tried to duplicate the problem. This is really annoying and am wondering if someone else is experiencing the same problem. More importantly will this glitch be resolved any time soon?
    Thanks in advance!

Now I'm getting this error...I've never seen this before.

  • SD DV import problem

I am trying to import into Final Cut Pro X old SD NTSC DV tapes from a camera I no longer have. Most of the time (but not every) FCP stops importing the clip after 2 minutes and 13 seconds. I have tried different cameras, cabling, and storage locations, but nothing seems to work. In contrast, HDV imports without a glitch. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

I tried both versions of Quicktime. They give me a different problem. At each clip transition, they stop capturing the video. These videos are from an early Panasonic DV cam and there appears to be some bizarre compatibility problem. Any recommendations for third party video capture software?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Editing Metadata - locked out?

I've just started with iTunes and am starting my library from my CD collection. Some CDs will import with minor glitches (for example, a 3-disc boxed set will come in with the boxed set name different for each CD, even though it should be the same and just say disc 1 / disc 2 / disc 3).
I have edited the minor glitches in the metadata in these cases (right click on album cover > hit 'get info' > make changes and highlight checkboxes as needed > hit 'OK'), but discovered a mistake in one of my changes. Now I can't go back into that CD and re-edit the metadata - the changes I make do not take effect. If I look at a track on the edited album, all of the metadata is greyed out. For albums where the metadata has not been edited, the track-by-track metadata is all black (editable).
Does iTunes limit you to one metadata editing session per CD? If so, do I have to reimport the entire CD and start over?

I agree with ed235; it's your windows permissions on the file itself or the parent folders in which the files reside.
Give your windows userID full control and ownership for the entire itunes folder. Make sure to check the box for "replace owner..." as shown on the 4th screenshot from this web page:
    http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-how-to-delete-files-protected-by-tru stedinstaller/
Your test of being only able to edit it once is puzzling, though. I'd think you'd never be able to edit it, but looking through the permissions while sitting at the PC might solve that puzzle.

  • Tiger Install Screws Up Colours

    Hi all.
I've been going crazy - no one can seem to help me out. And I've been on two other forums with this...
I'm not certain it's an Adobe issues, actually. I think it's an Apple issue. However, no one on the Apple forums can help me. Perhaps there's a genius out there somewhere in Adobe world who knows the answer!
    Here's my issue:
I have a PowerMac G4 with two HDs. I've had Panther on one of them and have just recently installed Tiger on the other.
After installing Tiger for the first time on a second interior HD, I selected in my display prefs the Adobe RGB 1998 setting, which has been perfect on my other interior HD with Panther on it. Yet colours on screen appeared to be way too contrasty.
So I calibrated my monitor. Soon after clicking 'done' and saving my profile, the screen seemed to change again to the way too contrasty look of the Adobe RGB 1998 profile!
I then opened an Illustrator CS1 file that I had created on my Panther disk. The image had an orange background which was now viewing as insanely bright assaulting redish orange, while all dark colours were too saturated!
Keeping this file open, I recalibrated my monitor using it as a barometer for colour comparison. Everything seemed to be going well, and I even set my Target Gamma to a much lower number (1.27) until my Illustrator file resembled the colour I had viewed it on my Panther disk.
Then again when clicking 'done' and saving my profile, the screen reverted to a dark and intense colour as before.
My Illustrator file looked 'normal', so I closed it. Then I opened a Photoshop file - same intensely saturated colour issue!
Upon reopening the Illustrator file to view alongside this Photoshop one, the colour was back to the insanely intense reddish orange prior to my calibration!
I will mention here that my entire Creative Suite is set to Adobe RGB as the colour space - just like on my Panther disk. I am convinced it isn't a CS problem.
And what convinces me even more is what happened next:
I kept the too bright Illustrator file open, and opened up an older copy of it that I had created days before (I had made a minor change to a graphic, then did a 'Save As'). They both were viewing as different colours! The original intensely orange one remained so, and the older file had a browny colour to it! Same file, same colours, viewing as if they were on two different monitors! I even went into the individual files to compare the colour values and they were exact.
I even went so far as to replace all Colorsync folders/files with the ones on my Panther disk, which I wouldn't normally do, but hey - I'm desperate! Anyway, no difference at all - still screwed up colour.
The odd thing is that even when I select all of the other display settings, they still make my CS documents look awful. So neither profile works at all.
What to do, what to do....!?
At first, I thought it was an issue when I selected the 'import' option at the end of the Tiger install. It imported all settings from my Panther disk. But the I erased the disk, and reinstalled Tiger clean with no imports. Same glitch.
And it isn't just my CS apps - my desktop is affected (wallpaper) and icons....
Any geniuses out there who can help poor lil old me?
    thanks,
    B.

It sounds like you are going through the growing pains of figuring out the basics of color management, and of monitor profiling in particular.
It would behoove you to stop all the frantic going-around, take a breath, and figure out the fundamentals before you go any further and compound the confusion.
Read "Real World Color Management", for example (
), slowly, starting from page 1. Try to understand and absorb the basic concepts, and then move on from there to the specifics (monitor profiling, print profiling, scanner profiling, etc.).
It will take time, but it will be time well spent.

  • Lightroom 5 glitching photos on import.

I've been using Lightroom 5 for about a week without problems. Today I went to import two photo shoots and the images come in fine until LR does a second pass and then they are all glitched.
I'm not doing anything differently with this import than I did with the previous one. Same camera, same CR2 file format, same lens, same subject as well.
Not applying any presets or develop settings.
Anyone know what's going on? This is freaking me out.
BRAND NEW iMac, all software updated.

This is almost always a hardware problem. Some piece of hardware in the chain of transmission from your camera to your hard disk and memory, is bad and is corrupting your images, resulting in what you see.
You need to isolate the inidivdual pieces of hardware one by one, transferring photos using a different piece of hardware, to see if the problem goes away.

  • IMovie 11 projects no longer working, preview window is glitched or black, event library not playing imported vids

I am having a lot of trouble with iMovie 11.  I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" for the sole purpose of editing surgical videos for work.  iMovie 11 was working great initially for me (taking full length surgical video - up to 2 hours) and editing these down to anywhere from 5 to 30 min videos highlighting crucial steps for the surgeries along with transitions, ken burns, etc  (with the plan of overlaying narrative voice-over later).  I had about 15 of these videos edited sitting in my Project Library and multiple imported videos (dvd to m4v via handbrake then imported via iMovie 11) in my Project Library.  Now none of my projects play in the preview window, it's either black or a weird glitchy picture (like messed up pic of my doc or desktop... really weird) and only about 2 of my imported videos play in the project library, otherwise they are just black when I roll over them.  My projects are still intact as far as edited clip lengths and transitions, but nothing plays, even in full screen mode.  I tried making a new project and the imported video shows in the event library but when I add it to a project it's black (but does play in full screen mode, but impossible to edit this way).  I think the audio is actually intact although i'm not positive because these videos don't have any audio (there's some baseline level that fluctuates on the audio bars).
I tried finalizing and exporting a project as an m4v (one that was a combination of two edited imported videos - one of the source imported vids working in the event library and the other not working) and the first half is all glitched up with no surgery video, but the second half is there with the transitions and everything (the half that is working in the event library).  This part does not show up when I am trying to edit the project.
fyi - I had deleted some of the videos from my event library to unclutter a little some time ago, the projects were still working after that.
I can find all of my imported videos (in .mov format) that should be working in the event library when I look in the folder:
    users/me/movies/iMovie events
If someone could please help me resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it.  I put a lot of work and time into these videos and it would be near impossible to start from scratch (which would probably be on some other movie editor like windows movie maker since my iMovie is not working properly even for new projects).  I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch that can be fixed and my projects are still salvagable.  I can't remember if this started after I did a system software update or not.  This will be a huge dissapointment for me in the Apple platform if I have to scrap my projects because I had just switched over from the PC platform.
I even got Norton antivirus and internet security to make sure I don't have some sort of weird virus.
    I have a Feb 2011 15 in MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, 4 g RAM, 750 g HD, 1 g vid card.  iMovie ver 9.0.4.  Lion 10.7.2

Did you by any chance upgrade your Mac OS from version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion) during the time you were working in iMovie on all these projects?
If not, start by deleting the iMovie Preferences file.
    Go to the Desktop
Hold down the Option key and choose the Go Menu > Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move the .plist file to the trash and restart iMovie
See if the Project files react any differently. Failing that try doing a Repair Disk Permissions:
Restart the Mac, hold down the Option key continuously until 2 hard drive icons appear
Choose the Recovery Volume as your startup disk and let it run until you see the Desktop
Choose Disk Utility from the Recovery Menu
Run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Reboot the Mac and when you see the Desktop appear launch iMovie
See if the Project files are the same or different. Next step after this is to one at a time take the Project folders out of users/me/movies/imovie projects. Move one to the desktop and start iMovie. Try skimming the projects that acted up recently. Moving one project at a time might help isolate which project may be causing problems. You can also place project folders back in their original location after doing this testing and iMovie will recognize them on the next relaunch. It won't hurt anything.

  • Video Import glitch

I've encountered an odd glitch while importing video to FCPX. I can't find an answer to this anywhere on the forum.
I'm making an audio demo. I used ProTools to create it. As it stands, the demo is two minutes long, mostly audio (i.e. with just a blank, black screen for video) but in the middle of it there's about thirty seconds of video footage, matching the audio. So you have a two minute video, mostly just audio with thirty seconds of video in the middle. I hope that makes sense.
I export the videos from ProTools as Quicktime files.
I'm trying to use FCP to finish the video. I'm going to replace the blank screen on either side of the video footage with still images, which I know FCP can do.
However, when I import the video into my FCP session, it only plays up to the point where the actual video footage ends. My remaining audio is gone. This seems to be unique to FCP, because the actual Quicktime movie files play fine.
This is extremely frustrating. Has anyone encountered this before? Got a solution?
I'm using FCPX 10.0.6 Trial Version, on an Intel Core 2 Macbook with Mountain Lion. The actual QT exports from ProTools play fine, all the way to the end. Their info is as follows:
    H.264, 960 x 540
Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    FPS:25
    Data size: 45.1mb
    Data rate: 5 Mbit/sec
And by the way, I'm very new to video, so please answer this post as if I was a total idiot who needs big words spelled out. Muchas gracias.
(I originally posted this in the FCP7 forum by mistake - that discussion is here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21869327?ac_cid=op123456#21869327)

There you go. See the space to the right of the cursor? There should be audio there, similar to the first big chunk of the clip. It won't expand beyond that space - all I get is a little red line on the clip when I try to do so.
@Tom - not sure I follow you, but it should be exactly the same as the chunk at the start of the clip.

  • Importing From After Effects - Glitching Out??

I'm importing lower thirds that I put together in After Effects CS5.5 into Premiere CS5.5.  Everything was working fine, until a few days ago.  Now all the lower thirds glitch between multiple other lower thirds surrounding it in the timeline.  Like 30% of the frames are randomly swapped out with other bits that I imported from final cut.
I opened After Effects, and everything appears fine.  When I play through something, then go back to premiere, it seems fixed the first time I play through it.  Then the next time it's doing the same thing.
I imported the project to Encore in case it was just my computer, and the actual footage was fine, but in Encore and then the DVD I burned the glitches show up.
    Need help!!
    Thanks!

Are you Dynamically Linking your Ae comps to your Pr Seq?
If so, render your lower thirds out of AE and replace the linked comps in Pr.  That doesn't solve your problem, but it will get your project finished.
Fixing it may require a cache dump or deleting your previews in Pr.

  • IMovie seems to have developed a glitch. When i try to import photos they show in the timeline but not in the movie.

iMovie seems to have developed a glitch. When i try to import photos they show in the timeline but not in the movie.
    Any ideas?

You are probably looking in the wrong place - all photos in Photo view and in event too unless you have a corrupted library
most common cause of your not finding them is bad sort - view menu ==> sort events
Nest most common cause is a bad data/time on the camera - this can be corrected using a smart album to find the photos from that camera and then using using the adjust time/date command to fix the bad ones
YOu can alwasy find the event a Photo is in by selecting it and selecting show event

  • Any one experiencing glitches on iTunes or Media Browser imports?

When I import a song to Garageband 10, like a karaoke track from iTunes or the Meida Browser, the very first few milliseconds glitch (bump, pop, whatever you call it). I have had to back in with the original songs which have space before the music and splice in to correct the problem. Very time consuming. Any thoughts? I never had a problem with this until Garagband 10

Was reading some post and a person with similar wi-fi drop issues said it was resolved when he turned his Bluetooth off. Just around the time my iPod was dropping wi-fi was when I kept Bluetooth on for my new Bose Soundlink speaker. Turned Bluetooth off and issue resolved so far. Just though if anyone read this they'll have an idea of what's causing it.
