Importing Bookmarks from an HTML Folder

I had to have a new hard drive install. The tech created a file call old back up which have all of my bookmarks in a HTML folder call favorites. Is there any way to import the whole folder into firefox 4.0 I can go in and do them one at a time, but I would rather just do the folder because it is already organize with subfolders.

The file that stores bookmarks may be locked or damaged which is preventing them from being deleted. Try deleting places.sqlite as shown on this site - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Firefox will try to import bookmarks from a backup when you restart Firefox. If you do not want that to happen, in the profile folder where you found places.sqlite, there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing a few files with extension .json, delete all of those files. Also delete or rename bookmarks.html in the profile folder to prevent Firefox trying to import bookmarks from that file.

  • How do I import bookmarks from a Favorites folder that I've copied from another computer? I'm using Win 7

I copied the "Favorites" folder off off another computer and now have in on a local hard drive. How do I either point Firefox to it or import those bookmarks. I'm using Win 7 and Firefox menu has no "Import" function that I can find.
    Thanks,
    Rich

Firefox can't handle the .url type IE favorites.
You would have to copy the favorites in that folder to the current IE favorites folder and see if you can import the IE favorites in Firefox.
If not then you need to export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import this file in Firefox.

  • How do I import bookmarks from a different PC installation?

I recently changed from a desktop to a laptop for my primary system when the desktop power supply failed. I was able to recover all desktop files by moving the HDD to an external USB enclosure.
Now I need to import the old extensive bookmark collection in Firefox 3.x to the laptop Firefox 3.x and combine it with the current bookmarks on the laptop.
How do I do this without destroying the bookmarks already on the laptop?

Before you do this, backup your laptops bookmarks as shown in the first part of the [[backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article. This step should not be necessary but I am just playing it safe so you can restore them if required.
The process below will save a copy of your bookmarks from the laptop, next it will replace the bookmarks on the laptop with those that were on the desktop. Finally it will import the laptops bookmarks, adding them to those from the desktop.
Export the bookmarks on the laptop again, this time to an HTML file, for details see [[exporting bookmarks to an HTML file]].
The next step is to restore the bookmarks from the HDD for the desktop. Follow the instructions in the [[backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article for restoring bookmarks, using the "Choose File" option. Now browse to the old profile folder on the HDD. For details of finding this folder see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox]. Inside the profile folder there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json, select the one with the latest date. This will import those bookmarks, and in the process replace those that are on the laptop.
The final stage is re-importing the bookmarks from the HTML file that you exported above, for details see [[importing Bookmarks from an HTML File]]. This will add the bookmarks to those that were originally on the desktop.
If you are likely to have duplicate bookmarks, you can use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10897/ CheckPlaces] add-on to remove them if you wish.

  • How do I import Bookmarks from Firefox 28.0 into Firefox 29.0.1?

How do I import Bookmarks from Firefox 28.0 into Firefox 29.0.1? I am running OS X 10.7.5 and just updated Firefox from 28.0 to 29.0.1. How do I import my old 28.0 bookmarks into 29.0.1? I've tried all the suggestions but nothing works. WHERE are my old bookmarks? Help, please!

Your bookmarks can be imported and exported from the Library (Bookmarks Manager).
*Go to the clipboard icon, click Show All Bookmarks <i>OR</i> press Cmd + Shift + B
*Once there, you'll see Import and Backup (see screenshot), you have a choice to choose between backing up as a JSON (Import and Backup -> Backup) or HTML (Import and Backup - > Export bookmarks to HTML)
Once this is done and the file has been backed up, you can import them using the same method (Import & Backup -> Backup for JSON/Import & Backup -> Import bookmarks from HTML (HTML)
One of our awesome contributors explained the difference between a JSON backup and a HTML backup that is very explanatory:
Restoring a JSON backup will replace all your current bookmarks (you get a warning about that), so if you already have bookmarks that you wish to keep then export them to an HTML file before restoring the JSON backup.
You can import that HTML file after you have restored the JSON backup to get your current bookmarks back (you need to remove duplicates).
You can't import a JSON backup to add (merge) bookmarks.
Importing bookmarks from an HTML file adds the imported bookmarks to the already existing bookmarks, so you may need to remove duplicates.
An HTML backup doesn't support tags and annotations, so if you want to preserve those then you need to use a JSON backup.
A JSON backup doesn't preserve the website favicons, so you need to visit a website to get back that favicon.

  • How do I Import Bookmarks from one profile to another ? I have tried searching online but I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" Thanks

    Hi,
I was wondering how to Import Bookmarks from an old firefox profile to a new one ? My laptop stopped working but I managed to copy my firefox data from the mozilla appdata folder. I want to now copy my old bookmarks to my new firefox profile on my new laptop. I have tried searching online for guidance but most methods mention a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file. However, I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" file. Among the files in profile I am trying to import FROM are a "bookmarks" html file(which seems to only contain the default firefox bookmarks) as well as "places.sqlite-shm" and "places.sqlite-wal" files. Although, the NEW profile on my new laptop I am trying to import TO DOES have a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file.
I would be most grateful for any help received. Many thanks in advance for your help and for your time

    f458italia,
Per your screenshot - you don't have the /bookmarksbackup/ folder nor the places.sqlite file - your bookmarks don't exist in that old Profile. ''cor-el mentioned another file that is missing, so that Profile wouldn't have been operational.''
Are you sure that you don't have another Profile for that user account?

  • Imported bookmarks from firefox

I have imported bookmarks from Firefox in to Safari that are not allowing Safari to function properly. They've given themselves folder names of "imported 2/7/07". Since I did this Safari is slow to open, it goes into not responding several times before opening. When I try to delete these folders Safari locks up totally. Is there a way to reset, reinstall or use terminal to delete these bookmark folders?

Only one collection folder should have been created, unless you selected "import" more than one time.
Because Safari is slow to open, buggy etc. one option would be to delete the existing Safari bookmark file and try the import again.
With that said, when you imported the Bookmarks, where you adding to your existing bookmarks (other than the standard Apple bookmarks), or were you starting anew? If it is the latter, go to the User Library>Safari folder and move to the trash the Bookmarks.plist file. Also, in the Preferences folder move the com.apple.safari.plist to the desktop. Restart Safari. A new Bookmarks folder is created, with the Apple Standard bookmarks.
Since this creates a new preference file, you'll need to reset your Safari preferences to your liking, plus any custom settings found in the Edit Menu (spelling) or View Menu (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons in the "Customize Address Bar" ).
Does Safari now seem functional? If it is, then go to import bookmarks. Here is the Finder path to the Firefox bookmarks:
    User Library>Applications Support>Firefox>Profiles>onxd8rpi.default>bookmarks.html. Select it.
Then open Safari's Bookmark Manager by clicking on the Book Icon. Once open, you ought to see the Firefox Bookmarks on the left side under "collections". You can modify, redistribute, create new folders from there. I suggest moving the folders up to your Bookmarks Bar collection, so they are accessible from the Bar.

Did you manage to export the bookmarks in Safari to an HTML file like posted above?
You need to do that first.<br />
Then you can open the HTML file in a (plain) text editor to check whether sections that start with "<H3" have a FOLDED attribute.<br />
If that is the case then you need to remove all the occurrences of the FOLDED attribute and save the file as plain text.<br />
After that you should be able to import the file in Firefox.

  • Importing bookmarks from internet explorer doesn't work

when i try to import bookmarks from internet explorer it say it's completed the import, but nothing was imported.

You can usually find the imported IE Favorites in a folder ("From Internet Explorer") at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu folder (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks).
If you can't find them in the folder ("From Internet Explorer") or otherwise have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.<br />
That way you also preserve any sorting that you may have done in IE with the Favorites.
    * Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
    * Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File
See "Import from another browser" and "Import from file":

  • How I import bookmarks from 1 browser to Safari?

    Hello everyone.
How I import bookmarks from 1 browser to Safari?
    This applies to version 5.0.1

It is Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox
    Thanks.
To export your bookmarks from Chrome, see:
[Bookmarks: Import or export bookmarks|http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=96816 ]
To export your bookmarks from Firefox, go "Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks". In the bookmarks Library screen, go "Import and Backup > Export HTML".
Once you've got the bookmarks html files from Chrome or Firefox, in Safari bring up your menu bar and go "File > Import Bookmarks". Browse to the html file you exported from Safari or Chrome, select the html file, and click "Open". That'll take you to the Bookmarks page in Safari. The bookmarks will be in a new folder called "Imported <DateYouImportedThem>".

  • How do I restore my bookmarks from an HTML file?

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I want to restore my bookmarks from an HTML file.
This used to be accessible via "Bookmarks-> Organise Bookmarks" but the "Organise Bookmarks" menu item no longer exists so I'm stymied.
This help system seems to think that it does exist, however, so please note that on my system, it does NOT. I suspect that hundreds, thousands, or even millions of new Ubuntu 11.04 users will be facing exactly the same problem.
I don't think users will be able to help with this one unless someone knows how to restore the "Organise Bookmarks" menu item. It's the only one that will do what I want and so there's no point recommending "Show All Bookmarks" as a solution. That doesn't work.
Finally, persuading this system that I really do have a new problem that isn't covered in the FAQs was a very irritating experience. I wonder if Chrome will know what to do with my "bookmarks.html" file?

Update to my previous posting. I just installed Chromium, and it took '''LESS than 10 seconds''' to import my bookmarks. Why would I waste any more time with Firefox?? I had intended to give Firefox 4 a chance to show me what improvements had been made, but who needs the grief. Bad move guys... bad move.
