Importing bookmarks

I have just upgraded to 10.9.2 and using Safari.  I wish to import bookmarks from Firefox but am unable to locate the source.
How do I get to the Firefox bookmark source?
If the bookmarks are located in the personal library (~/user/me/library/mozilla/profile/me/r4pab0tu.slt) not only could bookmarks NOT be found but also ~/library is not available Safari import search as it is a hiden object.
I have had this problem/issue since Apple has decided to make ~/library unavailable/hidden from the user in, if I recall, OS 10.7.

From Safari's help:
You can import bookmarks from many browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, OmniWeb, and FireFox. You can also export your bookmarks to an HTML file that many browsers can import.
The first time you open Safari, it automatically imports your bookmarks from Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Mozilla.
To import bookmarks, choose File > Import Bookmarks.
To export bookmarks, choose File > Export Bookmarks.
If you cannot import your bookmarks from a web browser, you might be able to move them to Safari by exporting them from that web browser as an HTML document. Then open the document in Safari and open your Bookmarks Library in a separate window. Drag the links from the first window to a collection in your Bookmarks Library.

  • Error Message When Importing Bookmarks From A Network Share

An error message is generated whenever I try to import bookmarks.html from a network share on kubuntu. This same operation is sucessful on the windows version of firefox.
    To replicate:
The bookmarks.html is created by Firefox 3.68 on windows 7. And is saved to a network share location. When trying to import this file into firefox 3.6.8 on my kubuntu 10.04 machine, I get the error message/window titled: remote files not accepted. The message states: You can only select local files.
If I copy bookmarks.html local to the kubuntu machine, it imports without error.
On windows, I can import bookmarks.html from the network share without error.
Does anyone know why I can't import across the network on the kubuntu version?
browser being run on windows 7:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100722 Firefox/3.6.8
browser being run on kubuntu 10.04:
Firefox 3.6.8 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0.

It appears to be any remote file, not just the bookmarks file. When trying to upload a file to a website, firefox threw up the same error:
error message/window titled: remote files not accepted. The message states: You can only select local files.
So what is it about files that are sitting on a server, firefox and kubuntu that causes this? I don't get the error message when using win7 on the same files.

  • Importing Bookmarks from an HTML Folder

I had to have a new hard drive install. The tech created a file call old back up which have all of my bookmarks in a HTML folder call favorites. Is there any way to import the whole folder into firefox 4.0 I can go in and do them one at a time, but I would rather just do the folder because it is already organize with subfolders.

The file that stores bookmarks may be locked or damaged which is preventing them from being deleted. Try deleting places.sqlite as shown on this site - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite
Firefox will try to import bookmarks from a backup when you restart Firefox. If you do not want that to happen, in the profile folder where you found places.sqlite, there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing a few files with extension .json, delete all of those files. Also delete or rename bookmarks.html in the profile folder to prevent Firefox trying to import bookmarks from that file.

  • How do I Import Bookmarks from one profile to another ? I have tried searching online but I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" Thanks

    Hi,
I was wondering how to Import Bookmarks from an old firefox profile to a new one ? My laptop stopped working but I managed to copy my firefox data from the mozilla appdata folder. I want to now copy my old bookmarks to my new firefox profile on my new laptop. I have tried searching online for guidance but most methods mention a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file. However, I can find no "bookmarksbackups" folder and no "places.sqlite" file. Among the files in profile I am trying to import FROM are a "bookmarks" html file(which seems to only contain the default firefox bookmarks) as well as "places.sqlite-shm" and "places.sqlite-wal" files. Although, the NEW profile on my new laptop I am trying to import TO DOES have a "bookmarksbackups" folder and a "places.sqlite" file.
I would be most grateful for any help received. Many thanks in advance for your help and for your time

    f458italia,
Per your screenshot - you don't have the /bookmarksbackup/ folder nor the places.sqlite file - your bookmarks don't exist in that old Profile. ''cor-el mentioned another file that is missing, so that Profile wouldn't have been operational.''
Are you sure that you don't have another Profile for that user account?

  • I can't import bookmarks (from Firefox) or Sync bookmarks using sync

    Hi
I'm on a mac desktop and running Firefox 21. I want to import the bookmarks from my laptop and so I have tried the following without any success.:
    1. Saving Firefox Bookmarks as a HTML file and using Import Bookmarks feature in 'show all bookmarks'
    2. Use sync to sync both machines.
On each occasion, using both methods, I can see the bookmark structure but only the folders seem to be imported and when I hover over the folder the message 'empty' is displayed.
I'm not sure what else I can do but it seems that Firefox will not actually import its own exported files from and identical version of Firefox: 21.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

  • When importing bookmarks, can I import them to a folder other than "Bookmarks Menu"?

I want to import bookmarks from an html file. I would like to keep them separate from the bookmarks I already have in Firefox.
Can I import them into a sub-folder that I create within the "Bookmarks Menu" folder?
For example, I might make a folder "Imported Bookmarks".
    I have Firefox 6.0 and Windows 7.
    Thanks.

They will be imported into a folder at the bottom of your "Bookmarks Menu" folder.
Simply drag it to where you want it, and rename it to "Imported bookmarks from ....". It will still be somewhere in you "Bookmarks Menu" though.
Unless you import them through the File menu directly from another browser.
Suggest you create a bookmarks backup if you are going to play where you not familiar.

  • I recently changed from IE to Mozilla. I imported all my bookmarks to Mozilla but can't add new bookmarks to imported bookmarks. Can someone please help me?

I have used IE browser for many years and have collected hundreds of Bookmarks there. I recently changed over to Mozilla browser and imported all my Bookmarks to Mozilla from IE. The problem is whenever I try to add a new Bookmark to the Bookmarks I imported from IE it won't allow me to add new Bookmarks there. It only allows me to add a new Bookmark to Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Unsorted Bookmarks, or create a new folder. It doesn't give me an option of adding new Bookmarks to the Bookmarks I imported from IE. I would like to keep all my Bookmarks in order and not have to switch back and forth from new Mozilla Bookmarks and the Bookmarks I imported from IE. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks.

<b>NOTE: </b>You are using an outdated version of the Firefox program. For the best browsing experience, update to the most recent version.
    Please, try the following:
    # Press <code>Ctrl</code> + <code>Shift</code> + <code>B</code> when Firefox is open
    # In the Bookmark Library, locate the folder containing your imported ''Internet Explorer'' bookmarks
    # Select all of the imported bookmarks and <i>Cut</i> them
    # Paste them into the <code>Bookmarks Toolbar</code>, <code>Bookmarks Menu</code> or <code>Unsorted Bookmarks</code> folders
Please report back with the results of the above solution.
Thank you for using Mozilla Firefox!

How do I import Bookmarks from my old hard drive to the one in my new Mac? The old drive is installed in Bay 2 of my new Mac.

    Hi
Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist is the file you want. Use a copy, just in case & do it with Safari quit.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in permanent [[Private Browsing]] mode.
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

  • How can I import bookmark HTML records directly into pre-defined (but empty) Folders?

Firefox is my default browser. I am in the process of replacing an old computer with a new one. I've converted into HTML files the Bookmark content of all of the Folders appearing within the Bookmarks section of Firefox on my old computer. I then uploaded this into the cloud, and downloaded it to my new computer. I've loaded Firefox afresh on the new computer. Now . . .
Ideally, I would like to be able to import these saved/HTML bookmarks (now on my new computer) directly into the new Firefox, keeping the Folder structure maintained in saving them from the old computer; less ideally, but still acceptable, would be to simply re-create as empty Folders each Folder from the old computer's Firefox setup and then do a 'Select All' copy/paste from each of these Folders as saved in my downloaded HTML bookmarks into these initially empty Folders created in the new computer's Firefox Bookmarks section. Is either of these currently possible? In short, this is a quite distinct scenario from importing bookmarks from other browsers on the same computer.
I have tried, but it seems that neither of these functions is currently viable. As common as replacing one computer with another is, I find this a pretty significant oversight which will require a very time consuming conversion process if such functions are not currently available; i.e., I'll have to open each saved HTML Folder and manually activate each individual html bookmark, go to that website, and individually re-bookmark each of these one by one within the Bookmarks section of Firefox on my new computer as if I were bookmarking this site for the very first time. With hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks segregated into about 30 Folders, I think you can see what a productivity drain this will be.
While there appear to be some quite interesting and potentially useful FireFox Addons - e.g., Categorize - none of these seems to address/resolve this problem. Can you advise? Thank you.

To start out with, Firefox hasn't used the HTML format for storing bookmarks for a few years now; you can still import and export bookmarks in HTML format, as you can with just about any other browser out there as an interchange format. Firefox 3.0+ versions use an SQLite database for storing bookmarks and browsing history in the place.sqlite file. Firefox 3.0+ versions do automatic backups of your bookmarks in the JSON format; that file includes "Tags" data but not the web site Favicon data. Restoring a backup from an old PC to the new PC is how Mozilla handles replacing an old computer - or you can "backup" the entire old Profile and transfer that data to the new PC manually. A user could also use Firefox Sync to "sync" their personal data onto the new PC. IMO, you're over-thinking this using dated information (talking about HTML files) without knowing about what options you currently have with Firefox and Mozilla.
Is that a genuine Netscape-1 bookmarks.html file? ''Look at the first line of code in that HTML file to see.'' <br />
Or is it a standard HTML file?
If you have a genuine bookmarks.html file, you can '''Import''' that file thru Organize Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import HTML... > From an HTML file.
Doing it that way you will be appending the bookmarks & folders that are in the '''Bookmarks Menu''' folder right now. The ordering of the folders and bookmarks in the "imported" file is identical, the "imported" data is added below the existing data. That said, the '''''Bookmarks Toolbar''''' folder and the '''''Unsorted Bookmarks''''' folder from the "imported" data will be in the Bookmarks Menu folder at the bottom; you'll have to move the bookmarks that are in that folder to their respective folders, above and below the Bookmarks Menu folder.

We didn't get a reply from you.  I just wanted to try and follow up before I close this out.
I'd like to know if the issue went away, and/or if you could confirm whether it's Firefox specific or happening in all browsers.

  • I have imported bookmarks from Safari to Firefox but the bookmarks bar does not change in Firefox and match that of Safari. That's the part I need most. Any ideas why? Also, I don't see where to choose for Firefox to be my default browser.

I use a Imac with OS 10.6.7. I've just uploaded Firefox 4. I had Firefox 3 already but do not use it often. I've been using Safari. I imported bookmarks from Safari to Firefox, but the bookmarks bar in Firefox did not change to match that of Safari, and that's where the important bookmarks are. Any ideas?
Also, I can't find where to choose Firefox as my default browser.

Copy the files from the old Profile into the new Profile, replacing the existing files that are in the new Profile. That will make your new installation just like the old one.
Or if you just want your bookmarks, copy only the '''places.sqlite''' file from the old Profile into the new Profile.

  • I want to import bookmarks from Safari but there is no import choice in the file menu

my firefox does not have the option to import my bookmarks, even though in Help it says it does. What do I do?

    Exporting bookmarks from Safari
Go to File->Export Bookmarks. Safari saves your bookmarks in an HTML file. Save the HTML file to the Desktop or any other location of your choice.
    Importing bookmarks to Firefox
Go to Bookmarks->Show all bookmarks. This will open up the Bookmarks Library.
    Click Import and Backup...
Select Import Bookmarks from HTML.. from drop down menu.
Locate your HTML file exported from Safari.
You can use Safari Bookmark Exporter to export bookmarks to an HTML file,if exporting to the HTML file is not supported by Safari.

You need to '''restore''' json backups through Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import&Backup > Restore - from file
