Importing Canon 60D footage CS5.5 Problems

I just bought a Canon 60D and am filming in 60fps to get the slow motion effect. The problem is when I import the footage it is really grainy and seems to be poor quaility. I can successfully make it slow motion but even the video appears to be smaller in the top right where it shows the video actually being edited. What import settings should I use and everything? Thanks so much!

> I am running adobe premiere pro cs5.5 (5.5.0).  My apps are all up to date.
Those two sentences contradict each other. The current version of Premiere Pro is 5.5.2. The recent updates include many bug fixes and performance improvements, including some for DSLR video. I recommend that you install those updates before attempting any further troubleshooting.

    Hi! I'm having problems importing Canon C300 footage into Adobe Premiere Pro 2014. I'm taking the files directly from the media browser to I can only import the first 30 seconds of each clip.
    Why can be that? Do I need a specific plugin?

    Since you did not perform the copy process yourself, my thinking is that maybe something went wrong when it was done.  Far too many people don't understand or follow the process that works.
    My recommendation would be to get your hands on the cards and do it again, making sure to use only Explorer or Finder for the task.

  • Vertical lines showing up after rendering chroma key on Canon 60D footage...

    Ok so I am working with Final Cut Pro 7 right now and this is my first green screen attempt.
    1) I shot the footage with my Canon 60D and did a log and transfer so I could make the H.264 files into Apple Pro Res 422, the correct method.
    2) I then applied Color Smoother 4:2:2 , then Blue and Green Screen and selected green, then Spill Supressor, then Matte Choker, then Mask Feather.   After tweaking the parameters throughout the filters I came out with a perfect image.
    3) I then tried placing another ProRes video underneathe of the clip so that the video would show in place of the green.  It worked and looked great.
    HOWEVER
    4) Upon rendering and playing back through the final image I noticed vertical lines running down the 60D footage.  At first I thought it was the image underneath coming through, but even after removing the image and simply using chroma key until the green turned to black and rendering again, the lines were still present. Am I doing something wrong?
    Please help, I have a deadline

    The HQ flavor of ProRes is overkill for this footage (I also have this model Canon), but that's not really important to fixing your problem.
    Further to what Rv told you: I've long been advised by people who are savvy about keyers to avoid the stock FCP keyer and use the Primatte plug-in – and that's been my go-to tool. Recently, I tried the new keyer in Motion5 and was very impressed. I tested it on a project I'd been only OK about and found it made a huge  difference. If you're going to do a lot of this kind of work, check it out. For $50 the keyer alone is worth it.

  • Importing Canon 5D footage: No video input available

    System: MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard), Production Premium CS5
    When I import or open footage from my Canon 5D (1080 25p) within OnLocation CS5 I get the message "No video input available" below the clip monitor. However, the audio plays. Footage that I take with a Sony EX3 (1080 25p) plays correctly.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Andreas

    Hi Mark,
    Thanks for your answer.
    Being able to add and merge metadata with 5D/7D clips is exactly how I use OnLocation; not for live recording or live logging. I typically have assignments where I shoot about 200-400 clips in a day or two, covering an event from multiple angles and in various shot sizes. I exclusively work with DSLRs and have no immediate plans to switch to other formats. I chose CS5 because of native DSLR workflow support without the need for transcoding. So you would expect all parts of the suite to embrace it, including OL. Initially, it appeared to be that way, but now you call video playback of DSLR footage inside OL "a bug"!?
    With the original installment of OL 5.0 I could quickly review a clip and start adding metadata to the clips (for easy reference) and then import them in PPro using the media browser (PPro does have a tendency to have incredible long save times/crashes when you keep the media browser open). After importing, by dragging the Description field right next to the name of the clip in the project panel, I can easily find the material I need for editing purposes (although a search box would help).
    I guess now with 5.0.1 I have to have both Bridge (or some other video player) open to be able to view the files and then add metadata to the corresponding clip in OnLocation. Where else could I add meaning to my footage?
    Just how strange is that!? Luckily Windows 7 now offers a side-by-side sticky viewing option, but surely there must be a way for OnLocation to do video playback natively...  Come on, it's just a video player, right? If Bridge and PPro and most other parts of the CS5 suite can play this footage back (you can even do matte painting inside Photoshop, right?), then why can't OnLocation? Why is it so difficult to "support" playback of these H.264 files?
    The only thing I can imagine is that it may be a technical challenge to read out vectorscope info from compressed footage. So for now (CS5), you could grey out the ability to set in and outpoints inside OnLocation (rough cutting), and disable read-out of all the vectorscopes for DSLR footage... and then provide full native DSLR support in CS6. I just need video and audio playback, to be able to add metadata efficiently and keep my workflow going.
    For a DSLR workflow, OnLocation can be a VERY valuable relational database tool that reads and adds metadata from/to associated footage files and creates an XML project-reference file which can then be imported in PPro. IF it works, of course...
    I am more than happy to beta-test this for you guys and provide feedback.

  • Choppy Playback FCPx from Canon 60D Footage

    Hi guys,
    Running Lion on MBP with 8GB ram 2.53 Ghz dual core. Moved up from iMovie 09 to FCPx. Shooting 1920 x 1080 30P on Canon 60D DSLR. Using card reader and importing into FCPx. Playback is choppy and sound is out of sync. Unusable. Read that the Canon plugin CE1110X.dmg wasnt necessary with FCPx and that DSLR users' lives were made a lot easier in FCPx. Hmmm. Downloaded the plugin out of desperation but no improvement. What am I doing wrong?
    Interestingly enough, my wife is running Snow Leopard on MBP with FCPx and the same footage plays smoothly in FCPx. The project doesn't export so great but that's another probem altogether.
    Help! Thanks.

    Thank you.
    I've tried saving to the external hard-drive WD My Book Studio 2TB (over 1 TB free) and also to the 250GB MBP hard drive, 40 or so GB free to see if it made a difference.

  • How do I import Canon HD footage shot @ 30 fps into FCP?

    Greetings all -- have Canon HD footage shot at 30 fps, not realizing Sony equipment can't "read" it and when I tried hooking the camera directly up to the computer to import the footage into FCP, FCP does not recognize the camera (No Communication). Anyone who can help with what settings I should use, etc.? I would be most grateful! Thank you....

    Use HDV FireWire Basic as a device control setting in FCP.. might also help to read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407

  • Match canon 60d still to canon 60d footage.

    I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.
    I have a still taken with a canon 60d. I also have movie footage, taken from exactly the same position. I want to match up the still pixel-for-pixel with the footage. The difficulty is that the still is 5184x3456 = 3:2 and the movie footage is 1920x1080 = 16:9
    What I want to do, is take the still into Photoshop and crop/resize it so that it is 1920x1080, and it has a pixel-for-pixel match with the movie footage.
    Looking at a screengrab from the footage, and comparing it to the still, it's clear that the still is cropped, but I haven't been able to work out exactly what sequence of actions will match the still to the screengrab.
    A further complication is that 60d actually records at 1920x1088, not 1920x1080, although After Effects seems to ignore this.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    'the right forum' depends on which software you're using - this is the Premiere Pro section. Let us know and we'll move the message to the right place for you.
    If you're cropping in PS the easiest way to match the two images (still and an exported frame from the video) is to open the exported frame and add the still as a new layer, move and scale it to match (turn down the opacity on the still to see what you're doing then reset the opacity when done). Then save the file as a JPEG or TIFF, which will crop everything to the document size - as your base layer was the exported frame, the resulting file will be the same dimensions as the video. This of course assumes that the still and video were shot with camera and lens settings so that everything you can see in the video is also present in the still.
    Premiere Pro, After Effects etc. can crop and zoom a still image too, but it's easier in PS if all you want is a static image (i.e. the zoom isn't animated).
    You will find it tricky to get a perfect 1:1 pixel match, as the encoding for video used on DSLRs doesn't read the same pixels as a still shot does. There's interpolation and sampling going on, so you can get the two layers to be visually the same, but not mathematically.
    Canon video at 1088 is always a bit confusing, it's down to the way the sensor polling takes place. Just place the footage into a 1920x1080 timeline at 100% and it'll crop off the left and/or right edges - do not use the 'scale to frame size' feature in Prem Pro or you'll force a resampling of every pixel, and lose a lot of quality.

  • Will my mac be able to handle Canon 60d footage?

    My computer specs are: G5 PowerPC, 2.0Ghz Dual core processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 MB Ati Radeon 9800 pro graphics card and Final Cut pro 6.0.6.
    Now my friend is thinking of buying a Canon 60d and my computer is the one we always edit on. Will it be able to edit the footage if I converted it to Apple Prores (LP, HQ or standard)?
    Thanks,
    Alfie.

    To be clear, your is a dual processor, not a dual core.
    An image is an image. As long as you can get the photos from the camera to the computer, your software should work as it always does.
    Now, are you really asking about RAW support, or some other format support?

    It is highly probable that your G5 is a bit old, slow, and that the software a bit late to be fully compatible with the Canon.

  • Lossless editing of Canon 60d footage

    I'd like to bring some 60d  footage into Premiere, cut it, and export it. Is there any way I can do that without having Premiere modify it in anyway? I've tried various settings for the output, but haven't managed it yet. The 60D footage is quicktime/H264.
    Thanks,
    JB

    Yep, in that case, Streamclip will do precisely what you want. It even has a batch window, so you can save all your edits to the batch and process them in one go--pretty slick.
    A couple tips:
    Open the Batch List before you process your first file; that way, it and all following clips are added to the Batch instead of being processed automatically.
    When you navigate to the frame you want as your in or out point, use the Go To Keyframe command (Ctrl/Cmd+K) before marking the clip. This will cause MPEG Streamclip to trim on an I-frame, so that you get a nice, clean, non-re-encoded clip.
    There's no need to trim the clip using the Trim commands; just mark an in and out point and send to the Batch List. It will respect the marks.
    Use the Save As or Save Track option, NOT the Export options. The Save options do a lossless extraction; the Export options will force a recompression.
    Hope that helps!

  • Lag on imported canon t2i footage

    I recently imported native 720p canon t2i footgae via a memory card reader to my late 2011 MBP (2.2 i7, 8GB RAM) and the playback is choppy. The stagnant nature shots are smooth, but when riders come on screen it becomes starts to 'stutter' and it needs to be paused for a little bit before resuming in order to temporarily aleviate the problem.
    What gives?

    A follow up question to that: The person who sends me the VLC screen recordings told me that he can adjust the following parameters. Which of those (if any) can help fix that problem?
    * keyint=<number of frames> allows to set the maximal amount of frames between 2 key frames;
    * idrint=<number of frames> allows to set the maximal amount of frames between 2 IDR frames;
    * bframes=<amount of frames> allows to set the amount of B frames between an I and a P frame;
    * qp=<quantizer parameter> allows to specify a fixed quantizer (between 1 and 51);
    * qp-max=<quantizer parameter> allows to set the maximum value for the quantizer;
    * qp-min=<quantizer parameter> allows to set the minimum value for the quantizer;
    * cabac enables the CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) algorithm (slower, but enhances quality);
    * loopfilter enables deblocking loop filter;
    * analyse enables the analyze mode;
    * frameref=<amount of frames> allows to set the number of previous frames used as predictors;
    * scenecut=<sensibility> allows to control how aggressively the encoder should insert extra I-frame, on scene change.

  • How to import Canon FS100 footage (.MOD) via Log and Transfer?

    I have a Canon FS100 video camera. I records in standard definition 480p video, and saves the files in the .MOD format. Lately, I've just been using iMovie to edit my videos because it can easily import to files. Final Cut Express cannot, though, as far as I'm aware. What I've been doing is copying the files onto my computer, then using a convertor to convert the MOD files into .MOV files, but then FCE has trouble editing it. It causes it to have to render after each edit. Is there an easier way to edit my video? I've tried converting the MOD files into other formats such as DV video, but it still has the rendering problem. My FS100 doesn't show up in the Log and Transfer window of FCE. Is there a way I can make it appear? Thanks.

    .mod files are a problem. Are you shooting in 4:3 or 16:9 mode?
    What app are you using to convert them ... and what are you converting them to?
    The .moi files are index information associated with the .mod files that contain the actual video.
    MPEG Streamclip should be able to convert the .mod files. You may need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Componen, if you don't already have it on your Mac. ($20 download from the Apple Store). (You may need to change the .mod file extension to .mpg then open it in MPEG Streamclip.) If you are shooting 4:3 then in MPEG Streamclip convert the videos to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression (this is a selection on the conversion screen).

  • Importing Canon C300 footage into FCPX

    So I shot about 100GB worth of footage on a C300. Now, when I go to import the footage into FCPX, I get the message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again."
    I've read in other threads that FCPX directly supports MXF files, and that I should just be able to import directly. However, it's not working! Anyone else deal with this or have found a solid workaround??

    Hi Chris, I use C300 footage all the time, FCPx loves it, all you have to do is install the plugin : http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120224_xf_plugin_fcp_x.shtml

  • Canon 60D Raw File Problems

    I have a copy of CS4 installed on my computer. I've been looking around the forums and other websites for help and I've literally tried EVERYTHING. I would upgrade for CS6 (which seems to be the only solution at this point) but it's a costly endeavor. Maybe someone can guide me.
    I'm not very knowledgable with Photoshop and in depth technology. I want to edit my photos in RAW, but I can't. I tried the DNG converter, and it did not recognize any files at all. I downloaded Camera Raw (the latest version as well as another one) and it said I needed Adobe Manager. I tried that as well but nothing.
    I have no clue what I am doing and I have been downloading different things in search of a solution. I just need some guidance in where to start to fix this, if there is a way.
    I'm using Windows Vista if that helps. Thanks!

    You can't directly.
    An app like Streamclip can transcode to a QuickTime file that FCE can use.
    Use one of the HD FCE Easy Setup specs as the template for the Streamclip settings.
    Seems like a 720p Easy Setup may be a good place to start.
