Importing Canon Picture Styles into Aperture (how to keep the metadata) RAW

I have a Canon 30D. Often I use the picture styles settings to shoot Monochromes. When I bring them up in Aperture to import they read as Monochromes (they are RAW) and as soon as I import them....Aperture strips it. This is pretty frustrating when I have a shoot of 300 images and 85 of them are black and whites. Canon software keeps the settings if I use their software, but i'm building an Aperture Library.
Does anyone have a fix around this?

Although I don't know for sure, it is possible that Canon Picture Styles are not in industry standard EXIF, and so they might be a Canon private format only readable by Canon software. If that is the case, there isn't much Apple can do but reach some kind of deal with Canon. Apple may or may not want to go to the trouble, because they might not want to also support the private data in other manufacturers' private raw data, like Nikon's encrypted white balance.
It's worth noting that Adobe's software doesn't read Canon Picture Styles either; I've read posts asking about it on their forums too.
Possibly worth noting most of all: The only advantage to shooting in monochrome is to be able to use the camera to visualize it. You can often get a better black-and-white by customizing the conversion from the original raw color data.

  • High Contrast themes on Windows 7&8 overwrites css styles on webpage, how do keep the High Contrast themes setting on window and use the stock CCS?

This was not a problem for me until Windows 8 now makes it so you HAVE to use high contrast theme to be able to change the background on windows explorer. Otherwise you have to accept it always being white. If there is a windows program that allowed me to change the windows colors like you used to be able to then I would not need to use the high contrast.

Note I have click on the Firefox button (Tools menu) and then click Options
Select the Content panel then Click the Colors... button.
I do have checkbox beside "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" checked.
    BUT Still
Windows somehow overrides this. This is bugging the hell out of me. How is it what windows has any control over Firefox's controls anyways?

  • Canon Picture Style Support in Aperture

Is there a way to support the Canon Picture Styles in Aperture? The reason I want to use the Picture Styles is as they give a basic touch to pictures which is often fine for most picture. Only some pictures I really want to go through the full range of processing.
When I shoot picture using my EOS 400D and apply a specific Picture Style, i.e. monochrome, portrait or landscape, then this setting is not applied when importing the pictures into aperture at all!
I realized this when using monochrome as a picture style and then the pictures turned up in color in aperture...

this is probably a good way to come up with your own presets ...
i personally have never used the picture styles (except the BW on my IR only camera - i only want BW jpgs) ... but conceivably you could shoot RAW+JPEG and tweak the RAW till it looks like the JPEG and save those as presets ... it may take a few times to get them close ...
but definitely worth a shot if the picture styles really is the way you want to go ...

  • I have imported my pictures into aperture, how do I export into jpeg files so i can share files with friends who dont use aperture ?

I have imported my pictures into aperture, how do I export into jpeg files so i can share files with friends who dont use aperture ?

If you want the same export settings on some or all of the images you can select all that have the same export requirements and export them as a group.
If all the images have the same requirements then you can select them all and run the export command.

  • Preserve Canon Picture Styles

Is it possible to setup Lightroom so that when it first reads my pictures from my Canon 5D it doesn't apply any of the Lightroom preset processing but instead apply whatever in-camera preset I may have selected using the well known Canon Picture Styles.
Note that when I first import the pictures form my 5D into Lightroom before doing the first loading, the picture is showed with the settings that was taken in-camera, but as soon as the loading is complete, the Lightroom preset is applied and I loose all my in-camera presets. So that makes me believe that Lightroom can read those in-camera presets so I'm just looking for a way of avoiding it to over write them automatically.
    Any idea if that's possible?
    Thanks

I think the main problem Richard is the extreme difficulty (at least for me who doesnt want to spend to much time on the technical side) in coming up with a preset that provides consistent results for all the pictures, whatever the conditions in which there are captured.
In DPP the "landscape" style provides great Velvia results consistently for pictures taken in any kind of light. So in terms of colour rendition, the main adjustments required are usually WB and that's all.
So I believe the main problem with LR, ACR or the like, is to come up with such consistent preset.
Personally, I always look for the best quality in all my pictures so RAW is a must, especially for fine art printing. And although RAW provides us with this advantage of more freedom in the processing of our photos, the main problem for me is that since I've gone digital 3 years ago, my time in the field has significantly gone down and been replaced by countless hours on the computer solving quite difficult technical problems.
The camera and software manufacturers are really enjoying all this as it provides them with huge opportunities for selling products. But as for photographers that means they need to be more than that, i.e. software and computer "gurus" too! and I'm not sure we have the time for that (I don't anyway and I'd rather spend that time out there taking photos).

  • Places not imported correctly from iPhoto into Aperture 3

    Hello,
I'm a first time mac user and have recently installed Aperture 3. I already had an iPhoto library setup with all my events metadata filled out, including faces, places and event descriptions.
Upon importing my iPhoto library into Aperture 3, the faces were copied over, but none of the places or event descriptions were imported.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Is there a way to pull this across after the import, or should I just delete the aperture library and try again. Ideally, I'd like to avoid having to manually add all this information again!
Thanks in advance for your help.

This is not what I found to be the case in a recent experiment using iPhoto11- I did repeat it to be sure.

Quickly, what I found is that only the ones I did actual adjustments on brought over two images.  Images that were simply rotated, had "quick fixes" or "Effects" did not bring in two images.  More importantly, among the ones with adjustments that did bring in two images, the ones with the keyword  "iPhoto Edited" appear to be nothing more than iPhoto's 6MB JPEG Previews.  The master was a 25MB RAW image.
I don't know why some users are experiencing doubles on everything, but I recommend caution in deciding which ones to remove or you may find yourself deleting masters and keeping previews.

  • Importing Lightroom 2 keywords into Aperture

    Hi.
I just got Aperture but am currently using Lightroom 2 and am trying to switch over. I'm trying to find a way to export my photos from Lightroom and them import them into Aperture but still have the keywords attached to the photos so that I do not have to go through all of the photos and re-keyword them.
    Thanks for any help!

I've got similar issue, but for me it's importing my photos from Digikam (Linux).
Digikam supports hierarchal tags (keywords) and stores them as ITPC keywords and, as noted by the OP, Aperture picks these up which is great. The problem/limitation is that ITPC keywords are flat so, in order to maintain the hierarchy, DK writes them to ITPC as '/' delimited.
For example, I have the following tag hierarchy in DK:
    People
    ...Family
    ......Me
    ......Mo
    ......Tanya
    ......Tamzyn
A photo tagged in DK with Me and Tanya results in the following ITPC keywords:
    People, People/Family, People/Family/Me, People/Family/Tanya
Aperture adds each of those as a discrete keyword which is OK as it means the metadata is retained, but is there anyway, scripting perhaps, to have Aperture recognize the '/' delimited keywords as a hierarchy (I've created the same hierarchy in Aperture)?

  • I can't import from my iPhone into Aperture anymore

Since upgrading last night to 10.10.3 and running the new Photos app, I'm unable to import from my iPhone into Aperture. My iPhone does not show up in the Import pane. Anybody else seeing this? or am I missing something?

I agree that Apple screwed Aperture users. I don't understand why. Over the last few years, Apple has dumbed down some applications which makes those apps much less useful. Then they slowly start adding some functions back in for a couple of years then nothing. Look at Pages. It still is missing features that the old pages had.
Apple should have simply given Aperture to everybody and maybe implemented a Simple User function for those people that don't need professional features. Here was an app ready to go and what does Apple do? Get rid of Aperture to come up with a "toy" replacement, as somebody on these discussion boards mentioned. I'm very disappointed in Apple and the direction that some of these apps are taking. I used to enthusiastically push Apple products to everybody but now I mind my own business. It's a sad state of affairs. The whole quality has gone down. All this reminds me of Apple before Steve Jobs took over. Somebody needs to crack the whip over there and focus on quality and useful apps AND listen to the users.

  • Why do I get two images when importing from i-photo into aperture

    Guys
I am a new convert to Mac's and am a keen amateur photographer ,I have transfered my photo library from my old pc into i-photo initially which worked fine and for my photo editing package I have loaded up aperture 3.When I transfer RAW photos from I-photo library into Aperture I end up with two raw images of the same photo one is called 'i-photo original raw' and the other ' i-photo edited raw ' I think I am probably missing a trick somewhere but am worried I will rapidly fill up file space with all these raw images.

When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically makes a jpeg Preview of the shot. Why? Because you can't do anything with Raw - can't print it, share it online, use it in other apps etc. So to allow you to use the file immediately the Preview is available. That's the second file you're getting.
You're not trying to use iPhoto and Aperture together are you? It's a waste of time and a cause of some frustration. Aperture is a complete replacement for iphoto, and you're really better off picking one horse to ride and forget about the other. Like iphoto, Aperture is a Photo Manager and post processor - but rather more powerful. Both apps are database driven. Aperture is not an "editing package".
If you do opt to stay with iPhoto then use an editor like Photoshop, Elements, Acorn, Pixelmator etc as your editng package.

  • Porblems importing Canon C300 footage into Premiere Pro CC 2014: only import 30 seconds

Hi! I'm having problems importing Canon C300 footage into Adobe Premiere Pro 2014. I'm taking the files directly from the media browser to I can only import the first 30 seconds of each clip.
Why can be that? Do I need a specific plugin?

Since you did not perform the copy process yourself, my thinking is that maybe something went wrong when it was done.  Far too many people don't understand or follow the process that works.
My recommendation would be to get your hands on the cards and do it again, making sure to use only Explorer or Finder for the task.

  • Problems importing iPhoto 06 files into Aperture 2.1

I have iphoto 06 on a 2006 Mac Book Pro with OS X 10.4.11. I've upgraded RAM to 2Gb and have recently installed Aperture 2.0 with the upgrade to Aperture 2.1.
I'm trying to drag individual RAW (12Mb) files from iPhoto 06 into Aperture 2.1 via the File > show iPhoto Browser command. Unfortunately, Aperture just seems to hang at this stage. The program appears to be importing (little wheels spinning etc) however, nothing happens. I usually loose patience at the 20-min stage and force quit. I figure even with 2Gb of RAM it should not take +20-min to transfer one 12Mb file. Please note i've tried dragging the files in as both Masters and Referenced Masters and it makes no difference Aperture still seems to hang.
    Any advice?
    Thx,

Aperture, actually OS X, goes by camera make and model not by file. The reason being that RAW files from the same manufacturer with the same file extension but from different camera models can and often do have different formats.
So it's not possible to talk about adding a certain manufactures file or extension you need to specify the camera make and model. Then you can see what version of Aperture and Camera RAW bundle you need to accomplish that.
See http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html for the list of RAW cameras currently supported. The only Kodak that shows up is the DCS Pro/SLR n which was supported starting back with Aperture 2 in Tiger or Leopard.
    regards

  • I have 1000  photos in an iPhoto Library that won't import into Photos because it says the metadata can't be read.  Yet those JPG files open just fine in iPhoto, GraphicConverter, et al.  What gives?

I have 1000  photos in an iPhoto Library that won't import into Photos because it says the metadata can't be read.  Yet those JPG files open just fine in iPhoto, GraphicConverter, et al.  Any thoughts?

It’s part of the basic install of OS X. So unless you deleted it then it’s there in your apps folder. If you have deleted it, it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. You will be able to extract the installation package using Pacifist.
Alternatively, if you’re using almost any camera +apart from a Canon+ then the camera card is visible on the desktop and you can drag the movie to the desktop using the Finder and import from there.
No matter what camera you use, if you pop the card from it into a USB Card Reader then it will be accessible via the Finder. Card Readers are inexpensive and all round a better idea.
    Why use a Card Reader?
Because it’s safer: Less risk of your images being lost if your camera shuts down during transfer.
Because it saves the battery on your camera
Because it saves wear and tear on your camera ports
    Because it’s almost always faster.
