Importing/capturing to PP from a DVR

Importing/capturing from a DVR
I am trying to solve some issues for a client who is learning how to take clips of sporting events recorded on a DVR, adding graphics and visual/voice annotation to them, and publishing them on YouTube.
The DVR is from DirectTV, model HR22-100, which my brief research indicates is quite popular. I don’t know much about it, but it seems to record using an MP4 codec. These games are recorded in full resolution HD. The client is using a MacBook. He bought a dongle-type gadget called El Gato, and he has been able to move clips from the DVR onto the Mac this way, apparently in some proprietary format, and then the software that comes with this Gato converts them to QTs.
The problem is that the results are in a 4:3 ratio, and the players are squeezed (toothpicks). Since he is using AE for the visual effects (he has both AE and PP, CS4, installed), we’ve tried various interpret footage settings to get a wider picture, but to no avail. We’ve also tried the various settings on the Gato software, also no luck.
The goal would be to have a frame with standard-def resolution, but at a 16:9 ratio; he doesn’t have enough bitrate power on the Mac right now for HD resolution, and that would only increase bandwidth requirements all around.
The idea workflow would be to bring the raw clips into PP, trim them, then move to AE for the effects, and back to PP to lay in narration, a music bed and wild crowd audio, and finally recompress back to MP4 or what’s best for YT.
Has anyone here captured directly into PP from this DVR box? Outputs include composite, component, S-video and HDMI, but no firewire. Of course on the MacBook, the only way in is through the firewire.
One route might be through a component or HDMI to firewire converter. Can anyone recommend a decent but not too expensive converter? Device control is not important, the playback could be started manually from the DVR, the clips trimmed after.
TIA for any advice and suggestions on this.

Google for ADVC-300 or ADVC-110 (I think those are the model numbers)

  • Capture HD Recordings from DVR

SomeJoe777: FYI - I forwarded the link to this thread and some screen captures to the team (or, at least, one of the teams) that are looking into this issue. Thanks for sharing your info, I'm sure it'll help.

Yes, I know the DVR is not meant to archive.  But, as discussed with my husband last night - back in the day when we recorded shows to VHS tapes, we had them for many years.   I still have some VHS recordings that work just fine.  Yet, with these digital recorders there isn't an easier way to save them to a DVD????  I mean, come on.  We might as well go back to the early 90's.  Otherwise, technology needs to change.  Why can't we just plug in a DVD recorder and save the programs from the DVR to a disc???? I'm sure it's "technologically possible" - just as it's technologically possible to get the data for a movie from a Blu-Ray player and save it to your hard drive, and then use it to burn perfect copies of the movie on other Blu-Ray discs.  That's probably also why it doesn't exist at the "home" level; too many studios are afraid of people making digital copies.  (Converting it to an analog broadcast signal, then sending that to, say, a Hauppauge box, which then converts it back to digital, is not considered to be as bad because every conversion between analog and digital will cause a slight reduction in the signal's quality.) By the way...you can record from one of the STBs to a DVD Recorder, if (a) you have the right kind of recorder, and (b) it's an SD signal being output.  Of course, the time it takes to record something equals the length of the recording itself, and once again, it's going through digital-to-analog-to-digital conversion.

  • Can I import a movie from a DVR and save to hard drive on computer with Premiere Elements?

Changing providers and want to salvage recordings from old DVR.
Also, If I can salvage the recordings, can I copy back to a new DVR?
I've got Premiere Elements 9 and haven't used in a long time.

Probably not... most DVR makers code to the hard drive in a proprietary format that will not work in any other DVR
You may be able to PLAY the video out to an external recording device, such as a VCR or a DVD recorder
Or, for a computer, you may be able to use a converter such as at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters

  • Unable to properly capture HD video from miniDV tape in FCE

unable to capture HD video from miniDV tape
When I connect my Sony HDR-HC3 miniDV HDV camcorder to my iMac via firewire cable and use Final Cut Express to capture the video from the tape, I do not get a Capture window that allows me to specify in and out points, I just get a playback window that immediately starts capturing and the only option I have in this window is hit ESC to stop capturing. If I let this capture window continue to capture the video from the camera with miniDV HD tape, then the entire tape would be captured as one massive single video clip.
QUESTION: Is there something I change or do to make the proper capture window appear where I can specify in and out points to capture from tape for each clip?
NOTE: using same camera and tape with iMovie with automatic capture enabled, all the clips get captured properly. I also tried to use the manual setting in iMovie and it worked too.
More details(read only if you want more information)
I have a several miniDV tapes containing HD video created on a Sony Sony HDR-HC5 and Sony HDR-HC7. Unfortunately, both these camera were stolen, and I have since moved to a camera that uses flash memory, not tape. However, I need to get the video footage off these tapes, so I bought a used Sony HDR-HC3, it plays the HD miniDV tapes just fine and iMovie reads the video from this camera just fine, but Final Cut Express does not.
When I setup Final Cut Express, I used the Easy Setup and specified:
    Format: HD
    Rate: 29.97 fps
    Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
These setting match those of the camera and recorded tape. If I use any other settings but these, then Final Cut Express never sees the camera and never opens any capture window at all. Using Quicktime 10 movie inspector on the clips captured by iMovie from same camera, all the clips match this setting too.
    Final Cut Express version 4.0.1
    iMovie 09 Version 8.0.2 (821)
iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
My Final Cut Express scratch disk is a Seagate 2TB external USB 2.0 Hard Drive that has been formatted to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This external disk is also where iMovie successfully captured all the video from the same camera.

Thanks for the answer. It makes me sad. I thought using Final Cut Express would be an upgrade to a more robust editing system from iMovie, yet iMovie does a superior job of logging and capturing video from HDV video on miniDV tape in comparison to FCE. Not only does iMovie capture each clip on the tape into it's own video file automatically, it also includes timestamp information in the filename indicating when the clip was originally recorded, which appears to be something that is missing from Final Cut Express. Now I realize that HDV miniDV cameras had a relatively short life span in the consumer marketplace and have since all been replaced by flash and hard drive based AVCHD cameras, but from circa 2004 to 2007, miniDV HDV camcorders were very popular and I am sure there are lots of consumers that must be super frustrated by Final Cut Express limited ability to log and capture clips properly from these cameras.
Assuming I do not want to make a rough cut of video in iMovie and prefer to begin my editing project in Final Cut Express (not doing XML export of iMovie project), I need to determine the best way to get clips captured via iMovie into Final Cut Express and determine if there is anything inferior in the iMovie captured clips that I need to be aware of. So far it appears that both iMovie and Final Cut Express reduce the 5.1 surround sound captured on the HDV miniDV tapes to stereo sound, which is not a big lose given the 5.1 sound was recorded from camera's built-in microphone, but it makes me wonder if the video is reduced in any way by the iMovie import process, examining the video in quicktime's inspector window the video appears to be the same in both iMovie and FCE, but I'll research the answers to these questions elsewhere on this forum and post additional questions if I do not find the information I need.

  • How can I capture film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder into my computer?

I've captured film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder before so you can understand how frustrated I now feel not being able to do it today. I have just one 30-second clip on the memory card. It plays on my camcorder but I cannot transfer the clip to my computer.
I have an HP desktop computer that's two years old with plenty of hard drive space. I've tried capturing using the memory card inserted into the computer and I've tried using the USB2.0 port. Nothing works anymore. I used to capture with ease using Windows Movie Maker or Photo Gallery.
In the past when the capture was successful I would import the clips into Magix Edit Pro 16 for editing. I could never capture directly into this program though. I hope someone can help me out.

In Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery I click on Import From Device or Import Photos and Videos. A box appears but it is empty. The message above the box is, "if you do not see your device..." click Refresh. Refresh doesn't do it.
When I try to import with Magix Edit Pro 16 (a German video editing program) I get the message: "Magix could not connect to selected device."
I have run out of options. I don't know what else to do. This Friday I'm going to do some filming at a ballroom dance but I'm pessimistic about being able to capture the raw video to my computer.
This is an edit later in the day. Now I can capture into Photo Gallery and then into Windows Movie Maker or Magix. But I can only do this with the USB 2.0 connection. When I put the memory card into the computer slot, nothing happens. It used to work. Anyway, I'm glad I can finally do some practice editing again. I'm just in the learning stage with anything graphic.

Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

  • How to import images and keywords from Nikon PictureProject to LR2?

I have several thousand pictures that I have captured with my Nikon cameras (the present being a D300). I have imported those to my Mac (OS X) using the Nikon PictureProject software. This software has now been discontinued by Nikon, and I have switched to using Lightroom 2 instead.  But when I try to import my photo library from Nikon PictureProject all the keywords describing the images are eliminated and I only get a date and number. This is obviously creating a big problem. Nikon has replied that they have no solution to propose! Has anyone else been exposed to the same difficulty? And has some creative person found a solution?
    Thank you for your assistance!

Thank you for your help! My wife Marianne who has the problem has used PictureProject in a very special way. She has typed in the keywords on the line where PictureProject gives the basic information about the photo DCS3_7325 for example. Where DCS3 shows it is a digital Nikon camera D300 and the 7325 is the camera's (own I imagine) number for the original photo.
In front of this my wife has written the description of the photos e.g. "Paris bridges Pont Neuf". (And not in the place provided by PictureProject for keywords.)
It has been possible to search the photos by typing in the added words.
Do you think that this additional (not intended by PictureProject) information could be imported to Lightroom2?
Thank you for using your experience to see if this can be solved.

  • I am not being able to play sound when I import a .MTS file from my folder

I am not being able to play sound when I import a .MTS file from my folder on my sequence bar of my Premiere Pro CS6. Even if I use my Media Browser to import the file, the video plays fine, but the audio is disabled it seems. I don't know what to do since I have used .MTS files before without hassle on CS5.5. It is quite frustrating. What can I do?

    Hi debesh05,
Please mention the Operating System that you are using and also make and model of the Camera that was used to capture those clips. Also, try to make another folder with the same name in the same location where the .MTS files are and move all the clips into the new folder and then try to import the files again using Media Browser in Premiere Pro CS6. If this doesn't work then make a copy of one file and rename it as .M2TS and then import that single file into Premiere Pro CS6. Please update if either of the solution works for you.

  • How does one import Capture One 7.0 Pro files into Lightroom 5.3?

I'm trying to import CR2 files from Capture One Pro 7.0 into Lightroom 5.3. I've done this before but this time around LR5 is not seeing the files yet I know they're there.

Ok, I poorly communicated. I realize that the CR2 files came from my Canon camera. I made an assumption that the issue had something to do with the files being in a Capture One folder. It didn't make sense to me why I could view the files in a finder window. I had too many images in subfolders to drag and drop or move them. They were organized in Capture One subfolders from the shoot.
I also realize that the files are no more in Capture One then they are in LR.
Right after I posted this I decided to quit LR and restart my computer.
    Issue resolved.
No idea what the issue was but it's moot.
Thank you both for the reply.

  • How do I import all my photos from my iPhone into iPhoto?

Following the directions for importing, iPhoto only shows 131 photos for importing which seems to be a random selection from my 21 different files containing almost 1100 photos.  I want to import all my photos and would prefer they import in the labeled files that I have on my iPhone.  Why is this so difficult?

  • How can I import CDs and mp3s from my externals device to Itunes?

    Hello,
I have got a real problem with ITunes. It does not import any data neither from CDs nor externals drives (mp3-drive). It is nearly impossible to do so because I haven't got the access rights. Thank you for your help.
    Mathias

If you use iPhoto you can put your iPhoto Library on an external disk.
If you don't, use Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) to get the material from your camera or phone to wherever you want to put it.
    To move an iPhoto Library
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards

  • Capturing a frame from a *.mov file

I need to capture a frame from a *.mov movie file, but Elements 9 apparently does not recognize that file format.  Does anyone know a way to do what I need to do either by changing the file format to something Elements 9 does recognize or by some other way?  If Elements 9 does recognize the .mov format, what am I doing wrong?  With Elements open, but no file selected, I click on Import/frame from video, then browse to the .mov file after selecting (all files).  When try to open the .mov file,  Elements says it is an unsupported file type.
    I am using Windows Vista.
    Robert Carney

Hi Robert, you can do this in Windows Movie Maker on Vista
    1) Click Import Media
    2) Navigate to your video folder and select All Files (*.*) from the dropdown
    3) highlight your MOV file and click the Import button
    4) Play your clip and pause where you want the screen grab
    5) On the menu bar click tools and choose Take Picture From Preview
    6) Save as Jpeg

  • How to have iPad (iOS 5) import only the JPEG from a RAW JPEG pair?

I have an iPad 2 16 GB, running iOS 5. I also have a Canon EOS 7D. I purchased a CF Card Reader for the iPad (see http://store.micgadget.com/card-readers/280-ipad-2-cf-card-camera-connection-kit .html) so that I can view and edit photos quickly in the field, without having to lug my laptop around. To make this easier, I set my camera to shoot RAW+JPEG. I shoot with the smallest JPEG files possible, still a relatively large for the iPad 2,592x1,728, with the idea that I'd only import the JPEG files to the iPad, but still have the RAW files to work with when I get back to my computer. This works great with one exception: the iPad doesn't allow me to import only the JPEG files, but grabs the RAW files along with them. As you can imagine, this fills up my iPad rather quickly, and takes quite a bit longer to import than if it only grabbed the JPEGs.
So here is my question: How do I have my iPad import only the JPEGs from the RAW+JPEG pairs on the memory card?
One workaround that helps slightly. If I connect my iPad to my computer after the import, I can go in via Image Capture, select all the RAW images and delete them, leaving the JPEGs behind. This is an underwhelming solution, but does save space after the fact.

What you are seeing is how Safari works now in iOS 5. There is no way to get that icon in Safari now. There other much better browsers available in the App Store. Look at iCab Mobile, Mercury, Atomic, ....
I have been running iOS 5x for so long now, that I don't even remember if that icon did appear in earlier iOS versions
