Importing cd as unknown artist

When i'm importing a cd where itunes does not recognize song title and album name, it automatically places it in a folder "unknown artist" in my itunes folder on my hard drive. I go in and manually label it and organize it in my itunes folder then pop into my itunes as a new playlist only to find that itunes automatically reorganizes it again as an "unknown artist" in my folder.
How unbelievably annoying. How can I prevent this from happening?

Rather than trying to alter the information outside of iTunes manually, you need to make the adjustments from within iTunes.
Highlight the 'Unknown Album' in iTunes libraries Album pane, then do a 'Get Info', that's Command and the I key together. You will get a warning about editing information for multiple items, just click yes. Now you can fill in the Artist, Album, Composer, Genre etc. When you have finished click OK. Now you need to click on each track individually and input the relevant info there like track name for each track. Now when you look inside your itunes folder the files should no longer reside in an unknown album folder but a folder with the albums name, which may well be inside a folder with the artist name. If you select Compilation, you will find it in a folder called Compilations then artist then album name.
Hope that helps

  • Album artwork imports into iTunes, but artist tags do not

    Hello,
After importing my music from an external hard drive backup, I have a problem with ~5% of my music. The songs are listed in iTunes as "Unknown Artist" and "Unknown Album". However, if I find the file within my iTunes folder, all of the artist information tags are listed if I use "Get Info" --> "More Info" in the Finder. Back in iTunes, the album artwork is there, but the tags are missing. These are for .m4a, Apple MPEG-4 audio files. How can I get iTunes to recognize the tags that are obviousy still present in the file?
There are too many songs like this to relabel the, realistically.
I have tried deleting the songs from my library and re-importing them into iTunes, but this does not fix the problem. I cannot find any logic as to which songs this affects.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

This same thing happened to me, so I plugged my iphone into the computer and I unchecked all the songs so it deleted from my phone and then i rechecked sync music back to the phone and all the album artwork were there.

  • Unknown artist and folder issue/itunes mac

So, for some reason, some albums imported to itunes get sorted in "unknown artist/unknown album" folder on the harddrive. I mean, in itunes they are where they're supposed to, but they dont show up under the right artist folder in Finder/harddrive.
Is there any way to fix this?
I ask, because sometimes I try and be clever and do backup, but I just realised that there are hours worth of music that I havent backupped, cause it's hidden in some unknow folder.
    Help?

When the tracks are added to iTunes, iTunes will file them according to how the files are tagged.

Keep your library consolidated, and make sure to back up the entire iTunes folder.

  • After "Organize Library" 1/2 are Unknown Artist/Album

What could go wrong letting iTunes Organize my library?
I had all my songs in one place in folders labeled with Artist names.
After Organizing, 1/2 my files are under unknown artist and unknown album.
In iTunes "Get Info" all these songs show Encoded With = Unknown.
The artist and album fields are blank.
In explorer properties, all these songs have artist and album names.
They also show Encoded by = iTunes v7.1.1.5
Since the Artist, Album, and Encoding info is attached to the actual song files, can I get iTunes to look at that info?
I have tried to Organize several other times but iTunes doesn't pick up the information it missed the first time.
I know I can manually spend a week imputing the artist and album info but the Encoded With field would still be incorrect.
Could it cause problems later on?
Is there a way to take the songs out of the library and bring them back in?

See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy before you start. That way if you eliminate too much data you can recover the files in their current state.
Try MediaMonkey. Select a test file, then use Tools > Advanced Tag Management > Clear ID3v1 Tags or Clean ID3v2 Tags. Then try playing the track in iTunes. See which, if either, causes iTunes to see the correct data.
Assuming your library had the correct data for these tracks before you updated it another possible approach would be to temporarily connect to a recent database in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder, export metadata using my script ExportImport, then switch back to the main library and import the data.

Try posting in a more appropriate forum, as this has noting to do with itunes U - the place where University/college/museums post education material.

  • Music app shows unknown artist for compilation albums

I just submitted a bug report to Apple, though I can't believe I am the only person with this issue.
Since iOS7 (I am currently on iOS7.0.4) I have noticed that the music app (along with many many other issues) will no longer display the artist for compilation albums that I have.  In iTunes the artist on the compilation is clearly defined but in iOS7 the Music app simply states "unknown artist".
Surely I am not the only one with this issue?

I am very annoyed by this bug too, I have  a lot of compilation albums and soundtracks with lots of differents artists, and my library is super organized in iTunes, with the “Album artist” field empty and the “Part of a compilation” checkbox enabled, and it shows the compilations as a “Various Artists” album.
But when I tried to download through iTunes Match in my iPhone 5C some few songs from those albums today, I found out that the music app has this bug that makes almost all of the compilation albums appear within this “UNKNOWN ARTIST” category under the artists tab.
It is very annoying and I hope Apple fixes this, cuz it is driving me crazy.

  • ITunes Reorganized My Music to Unknown Artist / Album

Due to computer problem, had to reload Windows and iTunes, etc.
I backed up my music files first onto an external hard drive.
Problem: when iTunes was re-setup, it reorganized my music on the backup file and moved about 80% of my music in the unknown artist / unknown album folder (previously empty). The songs are now in iTunes but the only data remaining is "07 - Fire and Rain", etc.
How can I recover the data so that all of my info exists? This is literally thousands of songs.

maybe try deleting those songs and copying them back on with itunes settings changed - edit > preferences > store > automatically download missing album artwork

  • All Tracks Now Unknown Artist - Can I Reverse This And Restore All Artists

Got a new PC one year ago. Had 350 CD's and decided to go digital with iTunes. Bought two external USB drives. One to use one for backup. Was using iTunes very happily up to one week ago. External HD one crashed. Not a problem have an EXACT COPY that was put back in the box a year ago after ripping all CD's to ext HD one and making ext HD two an EXACT COPY. Well, I plug in the ext HD two and OBVIOUSLY I had something checked wrong. iTunes in it's infinite wisdom decides that it doesn't care about my songs belonging to specific CD's, in some cases on CD per artist in others several different CD's per artist. So, now I still have all my songs BUT if I want to listen to a specific CD in either straight or random mode I CAN NOT | because ALL OF MY 4,000+ songs are all in the same folder called UNKNOWN ARTIST. I am in tears. It is nice to have the tracks but I don't know the names of most of them I listened to the CD's and knew the songs as being on a certain CD. Now all that information appears lost. AHH ! The one saving grace I may have is that I still have a copy of the original iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml THE ONES THAT WERE MADE THE SAME WEEK A YEAR AGO WHEN I FIRST RIPPED ALL MY CD'S !!! I can't re rip as I gave the CD's away since I didn't need them anymore. Might there be a way to restore the ARTIST AND CD data to each song without my having to buy all the CD's again and re-rip everything again OR having to look everything up and go into each songs info page and re-enter all the information ? PLEASE HELP ! Thanks.

You can do a factory restore and then restore from a backup after you've upgraded.  I just did this with my mom's iPad, but you had to have either an iTunes backup or iCloud backup to do the restore.  If you don't have the backup, could be that a lot of your apps and music are still available, but your settings are lost.  Your most recent 1000 pics or so would still be in photostream, so you'd want to rescue them back to your recent pictures folder.  Your mail, contacts, reminders, notes, are all already probably in icloud or another cloud provider for those services, just need to reenter your login information.  If you do secure backups, a lot of the setup is restored, without backup, you'd need to log back in to those services like twitter, facebook, etc to see your info there.

  • [Solution] No audio with AirPlay on startup (untitled, unknown artist, unknown album)

I have the problem of airplay not playing audio on startup.
While apple TV is in standby mode, if I connect my iPod touch or iTunes to
apple TV using airplay, no audio will come out from my TV nor speakers.
Music information displayed on TV will be untitled, unknown artist, unknown album
    while this problem is happening.
I bet everyone's apple TV have same problem if you updated your upple TV to latest version.
I contacted apple support regarding this problem.
They actually tested airplay using new apple TV hardware they own.
They told me that their apple TV has same problem exactly as I told them.
But...they are not going to fix this problem!!!
Only 4 people total reported this probem to apple support including myself.
They will need more people who report this problem to make new update.
So, I need your help. please report this problem to apple support.
    Here's the link.

    Thank you.
    K. H.

Not sure if this is related but I am going to post a response for similar problems that might help other folks. When my Airplay came through with no sound, I went to Settings, General, then Restart (at the very bottom). Then waited a few seconds for the tv to reset itself. Airplay streamed with sound after that.
Today, I got that display you mentioned "Untitled, Unknown Artist, Unknown Album." All my panels disappeared, the screen was totally dark except for that "Untitled..." message which just kept flipping back and forth. The tv seemed stuck in a loop, unresponsive to the remote control. The solution to this is to unplug the power cord to your apple box for 3-5 seconds then plug it back in. You should then see the apple icon reappear on your tv as it resets itself and all your panels (apps) should return.

  • "Unknown Artist" comes up on iPhone music library for some albums even though they have an artist in iTunes, Also some artwork not showing on iPhone even though the artwork for the album is on the iTunes library on my iMac

Trying to copy full albums onto my iphone 5s, some (About 25%) albums have "unknown artist" where the artist should be, even though they have the correct artist names in Itunes on my MBP.
Also some albums dont have artwork on the iphone but it is there on itunes on my MBP.
    Is there a fix?
    (itunes 11.1.2, iphone 7.0.3)

When you fix track names and album art in iTunes the information is written to an XML database and not to the file itself. You can use Doug's scripts to embed meta information to the file.
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=embedart
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scriptcount.php
There is also an iTunes vbscript if you're using windows.

  • "Unknown Artist" using Zen Xtra and WM

I have a Zen Xtra updated with the latest firmware and it is syncing fine with Windows Media Player on Windows XP SP2. The issue I am having is when I try to "sync from" my Zen Xtra back to my PC, all of the music gets placed into an "Unknown Artist" folder and then into a folder with the correct Album name within my "My Music" folder.
    For Example:
When syncing "In Your Honor" by the Foo Fighters from my Zen to my PC I get this:
    My Music\Unknown Artist\In Your Honor
All of the music is tagged with the correct Title, Artist, Album, and Genre information.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I think you can already do this with the ipod. I was looking at Belkins website and found a device you plug compact flash cards into, and which then plugs into your ipod. Transfers all you piccies.
Since the micro (and i guess other h.dri've players) can store data then it should really be a case of some simple software and a memory card reader.
This facility on the Micro, for me, would be almost as useful as having music to listen to.
Creative must be aware of this as the new colour screen photo micro is coming out this year sometime. Lets hope a media card reader adaptor will also be available.
    Cheers.

  • How do I keep imported albums featuring various artists in one list?

I'm new to iTunes and have not figured out how to create a single library listing when importing CD's that feature various artists. iTunes always creates separate library listings for each artist, spreading them across the library in alphabetical order. I can make a single playlist from all of the library listings, but I'd rather that the album just lists as a single listing in the library. (the song order gets messed up)
Has anyone figured out how to accomplish this? Many thanks in advance.

As Zevoneer pointed out, first thing to do is select all the tracks in the compilation album, do a Get Info and make sure they are checked off as "Part of a Compilation".
Next all you have to do is click on the "Album" heading and it will change to Album By Artist, then clicking again Album By Year and one more time brings you back to Album.
As it turns out, both the Album by Artist and Album by Year sort by artist first in the list then either by album name (Album By Artist) or the Year (Album by Year).
Finally, go into Preference and in the main (General) tab there is a check box for "Group Compilation while browsing". Check this box.
Now if you sort by the other two "Album" sorts (by artist or by year), your main library will be listed by artist alphabetically. Then within each artist the albums but alphabetical or by year. And finally, if you scroll down to the bottom your list, you will find your compilation albums grouped nicely together by album rather than scattered all over the library.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Can't Import Footage 101 Unknown error

Hi, we are having some problems moving captured clips from one system to another. Both systems are on the same version of FCP (6.0.2) and QT (7.4.1). The clips were captured to a scratch disk on an external drive, then moved to a second external drive. The clips will open in Finder and QT on the second system, but when we try to import into FCP it says the following error "0 files recognized, 0 access denied, 101 unknown".
The first system is a Mac Pro (2x2.66GHz) the second is a brand new 20" aluminum iMac. Both running Leopard.
We just ftp'd a single clip from the MacPro to the iMac and it imported no problem. Permissions on the clips on the external drive (that aren't importing) show read and write access.
    Any ideas?

In the info box for the external drive, have you selected "ignore permissions on this drive"?
There was a post yesterday suggesting that if the user ids (esoteric Unix stuff) between the two machines don't match, Leopard won't let access happen but Tiger would. Don't know how this pans out for you but it would explain why FTPing the file would work but sneekerneting a drive wouldn't.
    Good luck,

  • LR 2.1 - Importing catalog sees 'Unknown Error' and fails.

Anybody else seen this dialog box?
'Could not import catalog due to unknown error'
This is happening in LR 2.1. First catalog import attempt. I've had no issues previously.
Upon importing, LR will go through the whole process as though importing, and then at the end of the progress bar, I get the above dialog box. And nothing's there. The import failed.
    Anyone else seen this? Suggestions?

    (MacBook Pro intel 2.2)

    Hey Geoff,
Great to hear from you, as always. :)
Well, there were more un-cataloged images that may have been contributing to the situation. I had created web-rez images for my client within subfolders of the main client folder. Once I synchronized, the images were added. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the error message at the end of my import. Now, the weird thing is, if I import the LR catalog only, it disappears after the error message. But, if I tell the import to include the 'Digital Negatives', which includes all the session files (RAW,PSD, jpegs), after the import and then the error box, everything seems to be there and actually looks fine. At least as far as I can tell. I can see the all the files, the ratings, the keywords, etc. A little un-nerving though to say the least. I'm afraid to dump my original catalog and folders.
FYI, what's going on is that I work on my current client sessions (including all related files) off of my MacBook Pro as my 'Current' catalog. I then have my main LR Catalog (all other images) on a back-up RAID drive. So I'm trying to export from the MBP, over to the back-up RAID LR Catalog.
Again, the 'Export' seems to go fine. Not sure what's going on here.
Thanks for your help and input.

  • Every geotagged pictures imported labelled as Unknown Place

Hi have lately installed iPhoto 8.0 (from iLife '09) and I like it a lot. I already had some of my pictures that were geotagged (the pictures took from my iPhone) but iPhoto does not name the place for them. They all appears as "Lieu sans nom" (or Unknown place in English...I am operating in French).
I did verified in the iPhoto preferences and the "search for place" is set to "automatically". I also tried to export, rename and reimport without success. The pins are correctly positioned but since the place is not named, I cannot use the browse feature (by country, states, etc.).
    What I am doing wrong?

I tried to see if there were strange location properties using EXIF Viewer and everything seems fine. There is noting defined in the location. Just plain good latitude & longitudes. Just FYI, you do not need EXIF viewer to verify this. You just have to show the image properties from iPhoto.
One development. The same pictures on another computer gives perfect results. The location are identified correctly and there is no more Unknown location.
I tried to rebuilt my whole library from scratch using iPhoto Library Manager and it gives the same exact result. Again, the same original pictures imported into another computer works perfectly so I don't think that this issue comes from the pictures. Furthermore, to rebuild the library from scratch do not help.
    Can you help me?
