Importing comments from Word 2004 isn't working?

In my hope not to have to upgrade to Office 2008 (and I say that even as a Microsoft shareholder), I am trying to move a 200-page manuscript (which will be soon be a 450-page manuscript) to Pages. It's a novel, no images, only basic formatting and footers and right now, comments. My only issue (besides not having chapter numbering in Pages, hello Apple?) is that my numerous comments in the Word 2004 document are NOT importing over to Pages. I don't understand this, as I have imported smaller Word 2004 documents into Pages with comments intact. Any suggestions as to what I might try would be deeply appreciated; I will have to finish this novel in Word 2004 if I can't get this to work. And I would prefer not to.

jvabbott,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
I know this sounds obvious, but have you turned on the Comments feature for that document? I get book manuscripts all the time with comments, and have no problems with them.

  • Modifying Word 2003 documents on Win XP partition from Word 2004 on Mac

    Hello -
I was under the impression that installing Win XP SP2 on a FAT32-formatted Boot Camp partition would allow me to create Word documents in Windows (using Word 2003), and then open and modify the documents when I am back running under OSX Leopard. I can open the documents from OSX in Word 2004 for Mac, but if I change the document and then try to save it back to the Win XP partition I get the error message:
"You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a new name."
When I try to save with a new name (again, from Word 2004 for Mac, to the Win XP partition) I then get the error message:
"Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected..."
I can of course save the modified file on the Mac partition, but was hoping I'd have the option of also being able to work with Win XP Word files directly from Mac OSX as well. Anyone have any insight into getting around this issue? Thanks much.

Thanks for the response - I'll keep a note of that forum for any future problems I may have.
I've come up with my own workaround for the problem though.
It seems that new documents I create on the Mac work just fine in Windows. So I simply created a blank document on the Mac, set up the document margins etc to match the edited document I was having trouble with and copied the entire contents over. Worked a treat. Must have been the way it was created in the first place.

  • Importing footnotes from Word (and making endnotes)

I have always had great problems importing footnotes from Word. After having saved Word as an .rtf and importing the text through and Cmd/Ctrl-D the footnotes come in at the bottom of every column in the text frame.
Is there any way of getting them to go to the end of the text whilst still keeping their numbers and the numbers in the body of the text?
I think what I want to do is change footnotes to endnotes.
At the moment I'm just deleting all the footnotes from each column and changing the leading to zero to close the box and then pasting all the footnotes from Word into the document as endnotes.
This way at least I still get the superscript numbers in the text OK but it's not a very elegant solution.

Hello Guys, Thank you so much for your answers. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been really busy and I've only just got back to this job where I have all the footnotes. I tried  the Footnotes2Endnotes_v23.jsx and it worked first time!!
This will save me countless hours with this issue. I have resorted to pasting in the text and laboriously re-entered the numbers in the past!
    Thank you Eugene and David.

Adobe Acrobat 8 has two problems on my iMac. The lesser problem comes when I go into the Print command and click "Preview." I get a message that says that Preview isn't supported.
Preview is not supported because building a preview of a print job under OS X involves creating a .PDF file. You already have a .PDF file open if you're using Acrobat, so there's no point creating a new one.
The greater problem just cropped up as I was writing about my problems with Quicktime and Real Player: Acrobat tried to update itself and then gave me a message that says, "Cannot overwrite file /Users/(myname)/Documents/Update5/AdobeUpdater/acrobat8pro-en_US/AUMProduct.dmg .
That's not a problem with Acrobat. The system is saying that you have a file named AUMProduct.dmg in place already, and you don't have permission to update it. You need to change the permissions on that file so that you can update it, or to use an account which has update permission. Or it might just be locked and you need to unlock it. Locate it using the Finder (you have the complete path to the file listed above) and see what permissions are on the file and whether or not it is locked.
You might also just put the entire Update5 folder into the Trash and try updating again.
The file maybe be locked or you may not have sufficient access rights. Please make sure you have write access to this file." Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • How can I import comments from shared reviewer who doesn't have acrobat pro?

How can I import comments from shared reviewer who doesn't have acrobat pro? I sent out a shared review, but not all of the reviewers have acrobat pro, they do have acrobat reader 9 and have made comments on the document, but they do not appear when I open the shared review from the workspace. Can I import his comments so that they are apart of the shared review?

I figured it out, so I will share just in case anyone else has this issue...
The reviewer emailed me his comments on the document. I opened it and made a comment. When I went to publish my comment a dialogue box opended asking if I wanted to publish his comments to the shared review for him. Says yes and the reviewers comments are now published and a part of the shared review.

  • Place text from Word 2004 into ID CS3

I was using Pagemaker 7 for a newsletter for the past few years and was placing Word documents with tags for various text styles.  These imported and were set in the tagged styles and no changes in text format were necessary.  I have now not been able to place the files into PM7 as it says there are no filters found for the operation.  I assume this is from updating the Word 2004.  I have moved the newsletter template to IDI have tried to do the same thing into a newsletter template in ID CS3 but it doesn't seem to work.  I don't know if the tags are correct, if there is a problem in my selection or if it can't be done in ID which for all the bells and whistles is a step backwards from PM7.  Could someone please help with this?  Thank you

Just figured a bit out that seems to work.  You are right about the plain text.  I saved the file in "Text Edit" as .txt.  You are also right in that the first line needs to describe the format.  That works with<ASCII-MAC>.  Using this, I placed the document into ID just as it was exported. Also there needs to be a <ParaStyle:Normal> in the blank lines between paragraphs to hold the proper space otherwise that space is determined by the size of the text preceeding the space.  Now if we can make it work with Word saved as .txt then things will be a great deal simpler.

  • How can I import text from Word including paragraph indents?

    I'm using Captivate 7.
I need to import text from a series of documents written in Microsoft Word.
When I copy and paste most of the formatting is retained. Bold, italics and underline import perfectly but I lose the indented paragraphs. They all become left aligned.
Is there a way to import the indented first lines in the paragraphs?
    Thanks in advance.

Lilybiri, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Life sometimes interferes with living.
Thanks for sharing your opinions. Your deep and penetrating insights have changed my life forever. As in: "...that people expect ..." Gee; I've pondered that for years. Now that you've opened my eyes to "what people expect" I can let that go and concentrate on something else. Like, is cheese REALLY binding?
With your helpful and concerned attitude I'm sure you'll be glad to know that my problem has been solved. Not by anything from Adobe; the company or the forum, but by simply finding another program that works as it should.
By the way, I marked my own answer correct as it was clear that there is no answer and I just wanted to close the thread. Actually, after I reread what I said,  I realized my answer IS correct. So, I'll stand by it.
    Thanks again, it's been interesting.
So long Lilybiri, and good-bye Adobe Captivate.

  • Trying to import photos into Lightroom 5 isn't working

I am trying to import photos into my lightroom 5 catalog and it isn't working.  Done this MANY times before and this time nothing.  Tried importing directly from memory card and copying the files to the hard drive both just start the process and it never moves.  Even tried putting the files in the folder I was going to use and then selected to Sync the folder.  Lightroom recognized the 203 times in that folder...  but nothing.  Just sits there.
Using Lightroom on the Mac, importing JPG and a few AVI files.  Tried single JPG (that I could open in preview) but nothing...
    Any help would be appreciated!

Seems like this is related to specific files.  If I make a new folder with only certain files it works.  But seeming like it is more then a handful.  Really painful, because once it has the issue you need to close lightroom, then lightroom needs to be forced to quit... it doesn't close cleanly.....
All the images that cause the problem seem fine in any other viewer....

  • Why do imported hyperlinks from Word not show up in Indesign Hyperlinks panel?

    ID CS6 Windows 7
I am able to copy and paste hyperlinked text from Word into ID and everything works ok-- when exported to PDF the links work fine.
except now client wants to rename the text of the hyperlink- but there seems to be no way to even see what the URL destination is.
None of the Word links show up in the Hyperlinks panel.
I have to find out the URL and delete the original linked text and redo them.

Um. Are you not talking about proper URLs? I kind of assumed you were :)
Actually, hyperlinks *should* import just nicely into ID, not only plain URLs but also those with alternative text. But if they do, they'd show in the hyperlink panel ...
Can you check if they are mentioned in the Hyperlink Destination list in your ID document? That would confirm or disprove they are actually present, at some level.

  • Importing text from Word to ID

Hello. Which are the best way to import text files? I mean, step by step, from Microsoft Word to ID? It is a headache when you apply an style and booom all the italics and bolds dissapear... Sometimes it works fine when i apply a style, but sometimes it does a disaster. From now, I am really curious about how indesign thinks to resolve the import cases and the work of styles.
    1) Why sometimes erase all the word local formats and sometimes does not?
    2) Is it a problem using .doc, .docx or .rtf to save text files an import?
    3) Is the problem that you work with .TTF fonts (like Arial, Times, Courier) from word and on ID you use OpenType Fonts?
    4) What is the NON-FAIL way to do an excellent import? from Microsoft Word to ID
    Thanks
    Alejandro

    1) Why sometimes erase all the word local formats and sometimes does not?
When placing, you can select to either preserve 'local' formatting or remove it. Local formatting is "anything done without using a style", just as it is in InDesign. As Ellis says, check your import settings.
In addition, even if you 'preserve' local formatting, it's very easy to accidentally remove it in InDesign when you apply another style. If common attributes such as bold and italics are not applied through character styles in the original Word document, you should preserve them yourself by doing that in InDesign.
    2) Is it a problem using .doc, .docx or .rtf to save text files an import?
Yes, on all three. There is no single format that InDesign works best with. If a Word document causes me trouble, I try the other options until I get not exactly the "best" result, but more accurately a "least bad".
    3) Is the problem that you work with .TTF fonts (like Arial, Times, Courier) from word and on ID you use OpenType Fonts?
Not in the least. Actually, you can use TTF fonts as well as OTF fonts with InDesign. The import is totally indifferent of the fonts used -- it doesn't matter what you used in Word, you'll get the same fonts in the imported text. That is, except when it's bitmap fonts, which you cannot use in InDesign, or when the author italicized or bolded text in Word where the actual Bold or Italic font doesn't exist. But even then, InDesign will happily import the text -- it will just have an 'unavailable' font assigned to it, and you'll be notified of that.
    4) What is the NON-FAIL way to do an excellent import? from Microsoft Word to ID
I would like to know the answer to that as well. The import filter has problems with tables, footnotes, endnotes, automatic references, and new page codes, for .docx, .rtf, and .doc files.

  • Selecting and importing text from Word

    Hi..
I am interested in importing text from Microsoft Word into labview.
The text will be identified by a particular 'style'. I have seen examples of reading text marked by 'bookmarks' however this doesn't appear to be sufficient or flexible enough for this application.
I have tried adapting the 'bookmark' code (using different property/invoke nodes) but can't seem to find something that works in a similar way.
Just wondering if anyone has already tried something similar.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Mike
(Labview 8.2.1 + Report Generation Toolkits)

    Hi Mark,
The plan was to be able to sift through text in a Word document for blocks of text that match a particular 'style' (determined by us) and import the text into Labview to populate VI descriptions/free labels etc.
I have adapted some code I have found to be able to cycle through table rows/columns and be able to match text/string patterns, however matching the 'style' property should make this operation a little cleaner or perhaps give us more control over what strings are matched.

  • Imported footnote from word won't be removed in indesign textbox

I have such an annoying problem!
I got a indesign doc from my client, they already imported the text (with styles) from word for me.
But now, I keep having problems wit a footnotecontainer  that doesn't want to be deleted from my text box. It stays in the bottom of my indesign text box, visible with a black line.
I tried everything I know to delete it, but goes beyond my knowledge of indesign (which is quite a lot). Does anyone have a solution for me??
    Regards and thanks, Liek

    Liek,
(In English, for those with the same problem:
    1. Click inside the Footnote box at the bottom
    2. From the context pop-up menu, choose "Go to Footnote Reference"
    3. Select "Go to Footnote Reference", somewhere near the middle of the menu list.
    4. The text cursor moves to behind the reference. Use Backspace to delete it.
If this doesn't work we'll have ta try something else.

  • Clicking from Word to InDesign not working

I am trying to copy and paste from MS Word 2011 into the lastest CC InDesign 2014 (10.1.0.71) (on a Mavericks 10.9.4) and it is not working to simply click from Word into InDesign. I must use the toggle shortcut  (Command + Tab) to activate the workspace in InDesign, then click my targeted text box.
This is an extra step in my workflow and has never been a problem in previous versions or any other software for that matter. Clicking a window should make that application active.
    Please HELP! Fix!
    Thanks!
    K

Just realizing this is an issue across displays. Any software that I have on monitor B will not allow me to click into InDesign on Monitor A to activate the InDesign application. I must toggle, or click another application's window then click InDesign, to make it active.

  • Importing text from word into indesign3

I am importing text from a word document that has lots of footnotes in it into an indesign3 file  - I need to keep some of the formatting from the word document i.e italics and tabs however I need to be able to edit and reposition the 'word' footnotes within indesign - I don't seem to be able to do this without turning off the footnotes editing completely before importing? Is there a way around this?

Word is wordprocessor. iWeb is an application to create webpages with.
Copy/pasting formatted text always has unexpected results.
To overcome that, save your Word document as a html file.
Open it in a browser and then copy/paste the text.
    iWeb will retain the formatting.
And Lion is an operating system. Just like a Mercedes is a car. Neither has anything to do with your problem.

  • Import text from Word 2007/2010

    Hi There,
I have already a lot of content in Word Courses. I can off course cut and paste content from Word to Captivate but how can I keep the formatting of the styles from Word. Or do I have to paste it as plain text and modify it in Captivate. Is for example Captivate also using some styles like Word does.
Hope one of you could help me.
    Regards,

The two are not at all the same. Paste involves copying text to the clipboard and then pasting from the clipboard. Place is an import operation.
