Importing D90 footage

I have FCP 5.1.4 and just got a D90. What's the best setting to import the .AVI files
or is it better to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec? And if so should I convert them to 23.98?
Thanks a lot for all your help!

I've upgraded to FCP 6.0.6 and started a test converting the clips to ProRes 422 (not High Quality)
and it works perfect

  • Nikon D90 footage: Can you edit natively in Final Cut?

Just wondering if anyone has been using the new Nikon D90 to shoot video, and then importing the footage natively into FCP6. The camera's video-recording format, from what I have read, is 720p24, an .avi file, and a Motion JPEG codec.
I see that in the settings for a Final Cut sequence, you can choose 1280X720 frame size, a true 24 frames per second rate, and either a Motion JPEG A or Motion JPEG B compressor. It seems like with these settings, you could put your footage into the timeline and not have to render it before editing . . . unless the .avi file format goofs it up. Can you edit .avi in Final Cut natively, or do you have to use a Quicktime file?
    Any workflow advice much appreciated,
    Jim

No, sorry to say, I do not own the camera. And in looking around the web for an original, as-shot-by-the-D90 clip to experiment with, the only ones I found were at this site:
    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08090101nikond90samplegallery.asp
They were billed as: D90 sample movie 1 • original .AVI format • 21 seconds, 35.7 MB
    and: D90 sample movie 3 • original .AVI format • 9 seconds, 24.5 MB
So I downloaded them, imported them into Final Cut, and they showed up with settings in the browser of: 1280X720 and 24 fps (so far so good) but then a compressor setting of "Apple OpenDML JPEG" rather than what I was expecting, Motion JPEG, which is what the D90 spec is. If the clip was truly "original .AVI format," I would have expected the compressor setting to be Motion JPEG.
Then, when I tried to change the sequence settings to Apple OpenDML JPEG, I found that there is no such setting. My thought was if the size, 1280X720, the frame rate, 24, and the compressor settings all matched, you could edit natively. And when I dragged the clip into the timeline, it did not give me a dialogue box asking if I would like the sequence settings to match the clip, the way it does with some footage.
Yes, you can render the clip and then edit it, but it would be great to avoid that step. Anyway, I got the red bar in the timeline with every combination of sequence compressor settings I tried, maybe 10 of them.
So maybe the answer is some time is needed for Final Cut to support the D90's Motion JPEG files natively, though I believe that is an older codec. Too bad the D90 does not record in something like DVCPRO HD. For a $1000 camera, the image quality looks pretty good, and the shallow depth of field really turned my head. I was thinking it might be a cheap Red Rock or Letus killer.
    Thanks for the input,
    Jim

  • Codec for Nikon D90 footage

I'm playing around with Nikon D90 footage for the first time. It imports as an Apple Open DML Jpeg 1280x720, 24 FPS file.
Any recommendation as to which Codec or sequence setting I should use to keep as much quality of the raw?
    Thanks,
    mp

I'm on a MacPro with FCP 6. I do not have an SDI connection or RAID Array drives, so uncompressed is out of the question. I wonder how much of a difference there is between uncompressed and Apple Prores, aside from a huge file size disparity. I think I will play with Apple Prores HQ.

  • What cable do I need to import video footage from my Nikon D5100 DSLR?

Currently I am just inserting my SD card into my Mac and copying over all video clips then importing those directly into FCPX.
I'd prefer to use a cable, and since these DSLR's don't use the same Firewire my Sony Handycam did (seemingly), I'm at a loss about what to use.
I am also interested in importing my footage as I record, directly into FCPX. So the cable must be capable of that as well.
    Thanks

Ok I'll be sincere, video editing is not my thing, but I do own a Nikon D5000, and this one as far as I know is not able to "stream" recordings right into FCP. I maybe wrong though, and in that case, your USB cable should suit your needs.

  • Can't import P2 Footage after 5.1.2 update

This one has me stumped. After updating to 5.1.2 I can not import P2 footage.
When I click on the import Panasonic P2 tab under the import menu, nothing happens. Then, I click on it one more time and the import window loads but there is nothing there (I see the dividing lines but there is no text or buttons to click...just a solid grey background).
Tried the usual...trashed prefs, rebuilt permissions, downloaded the full FCP update off of the apple website and re-installed.
Also pulled all my plug-ins out just in case it was somehow related to that issue.
    Still nothing.
Also, searched this form, creative cow and HVXUSER...no one else seems to have this issue.
    Any thing I am missing?

    Dual 2 Gig G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Same problem here on two different G5 machines after installing 5.1.2. Love the new import tool - but 10-20% of our clips just won't import anymore. Done all the recommended clean-ups and like many others on this forum and CreativeCow...it just won't work on some 24PN clips.
Getting desperate as we have daily shows that go out and need to get the rest of those clips in so I'm looking for any workarounds at this point and hoping Apple has a fix soon. This is clearly related to 5.1.2 as the same clips were previously imported in 5.1.1 and are readable in the P2 viewer and even playable in the 5.1.2 P2 import window.

  • How do I capture tape-based media to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The manual says to import tape footage directly into fcpx, but then I lose my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

In FCP X How do I capture tape-based media (hdv clips)- which I want to import-to my external hard drive?  There is only one firewire 800 port on the back of my I mac.  The FCPX manual says to import tape footage directly into final cut, which works, but then I lose  my external hard drive    Do I  have to import it into an event, then copy it over to an external hard drive?  On Larry Jordan's tutorial, he has 3 external hard drives that show up on his monitor WHILE he imports his tape based media.  How is that done?  I can only get either the camera to appear OR my external hard drive.   thanks for your help.

Thanks for your response, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Yes, the LaCie hard drive has 2 firewire ports-
I have always done what you suggest (works fine in FCP7), but in FCPX when I do that the camcorder icon
does not appear.  It only shows up when I DIRECTLY import the footage via firewire.  ????

  • Need help importing HD footage from external hard drive

I have an external hard drive with some footage from a friend. I cannot view the footage either in QT or through importing to FCP. I have version 4.5 of FCP HD. The audio works on the clips, but the video does not. Im guessing it might be a format issue, as the footage is HD footage shot at 24P. I've tried opening a separate timeline and changing the settings there, but that didnt seem to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that the footage is HDV, and FCP 4.5 cannot work with HDV. That format came out over a year after FCP 4.5 was released. FCP 4.5 was dubbed FCP HD because it worked with DVCPRO HD footage natively. HDV support didn't hit FCP until 5.0.
You have options. Because HDV came out when FCP 4.5 was in use and didn't work with it, a couple companies made solutions to import this footage. www.lumierehd.com and www.hdvxdv.com.
BUT...that will get you the HDV footage at 29.97...60i. HDV 24p support didn't arrive until FCP 5.1.2. So you can try those solutions and see what happens, but most likely you'll have to upgrade to the latest version of FCP...6.0.2

  • After Effects CC import "Sequence Footage" frame rate settings in "Import" preferences

Just started using the new AE CC (v12 as Adobe will not refer to it as) I noticed one thing that seems to work differently from CS6 and that is in the preferences for import Sequence footage settings.  It doesn't seem to work normally, at least for me.  I don't know if this is an issue related to how AE CC works with the cloud but the dfault frame rate for sequence footage importing is 30fps.  I am trying to import footage that is natively 23.97 at 24 fps.  So like in CS6 I go to Preferences - Import - Sequence Footage - frame per second and change it from 30 to 24 frames per second.  Closed the software, opened it back up, checked the settings and saw that they took, it still says 24 frames per second like I told it.  But when I import a piece of 23.976 footage, it comes in at 23.976 as opposed to the 24 fps I set it as.  Same goes for 30 fps footage, it comes in at 30 fps and not 24.  User error is always my first assumption, I'm not proud i just want it to work, am I doing something wrong or just confused?  Thanks for any help.  p.s.  help is not someone responding with, "I don't know" or "I don't have AECC yet".  I know somebody is going to!

    Hi Tim,
WOW!  Thanks for the super-fast reply!  As soon as I posted this I realised I should have mentioned that I am importing DPX files.  I do import quicktimes as well but know that the footage import does not apply to a single file, only a sequence of files.  But I still wonder if I may be either doing something wrong or am just a little confused.  I have been using After Effects since CS3 doing compositing for film and I always use DPX sequences.  I did a bunch of comparing and back and forth with AE CS6 and AECC while trying to figure this out.  I always set my preferences up when I upgrade before I start working and I always set them up the same.  I have been using CS6 since last July and it still works the same.  What I did is imported five or six different DPX sequences, some were rendered out as 24 fps, some at 30 and some at 23.976.  Assuming AE looks at the metadata to decide how to auto interpret, AE CC opened them all at their native frame rates of the just mentioned 24, 30 and 23.976 respectively, even though I told it to import at 24fps in the preferences.  I also imported the same files in AE CS6 and they all opened at 24 fps like always.  I know I can change the frame rate in the "Interpret footage" option, that is what I have been doing today so that I can work with footage in 24fps but since I have it set in the preferences to import image sequences at 24fps, I am perplexed as to why it does not do so, so I do not have to interpret the footage to my preferred frame rate, as is the case in AE CS6 as well as it was in CS 5.5 and CS 3.  Since I was lucky enough to have an Adobe employee chime in Tim, I would be curious to see what you may find if you recreated this scenario.  Would it be possible for you or someone at Adobe to set the sequence footage import frame rate to 24 fps in the preferences then try to open a piece of footage that is natively 23.976 fps in both AE CS6 and AE CC?  Like I said, I certainly beleive I may be doing something wrong but I would be very curious to see what you find on your side.  I would not be suprised if it imported at 24 fps in AE CS6 and 23.976 fps in AE CC.

  • Need help importing Hi8 footage into FCE4

    Hi all,
I have a Sony Digital 8 TRV310 camcorder. I'd like to be able to import the Sony footage directly into FCE 4 but am having trouble.
I've successfully imported Hi8 footage from the TRV310 into FCE 4 in the past (it's been a couple years) but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it (it had something to do with Easy Setup and choosing 'device control = none' or something like that. I can't seem to find that option anymore and the only 'device control none' is 'DV-NTSC DV Converter' and that selection doesn't work for the import).
Here is the process that I am going through:
    1. I hook my Sony TRV310 up to my Mac Pro via a firewire 400 cable, turn the camera on and switch it to VTR (play) mode. I manually cue to the beginning of the footage I want to capture.
    2. Before attempting to import Sony footage into FCE 4 I go to 'easy setup' and dial in format=NTSC and use=DV-NTSC then click the setup button. I then go to file-->capture and a small window pops up indicating that capture is being initialized.
    3. The the 'capture window' pops up with preview screen indicating that 'preview has been disabled'
    4. I then hit the 'play' button in the capture window and then hit the 'capture now' button.
A black window with 'Final Cut Express and Apple logo' pops up for a few seconds, then a warning window pops up which states 'this operation could not be completed as there is no video'.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Dennis

    Sounds pretty close to me.
Try starting a NEW Project the the DV Converter option selected , you may not have initiated the DV Converter option.
Also there is no device control, so the Capture Now will not work, Start the camera manually and use the Escape key to stop capture.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I think maybe you took a wrong turn somewhere. You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum. You may want to try posting in the iMovie Forum.

  • PP Sequences Imported as Footage Not Comp

Hello. I am having a sudden and strange problem.
I am trying to import a Premiere sequence into After Effects and am having the sequence show up as Footage. I have imported another sequence from the same project and it imported perfectly (sequential layers, footage, folders) but now my sequences are showing up as a timeline only viewable as one chunk of footage.
As a test, I tried to import the sequence that had imported flawlessly and now that one will not import as a comp, only footage.
When importing by File->Import->(click project) I see the drop down box for Import as: but I only have the option for Import as Footage, Import as Comp is greyed out. I get the Dynamic Link box for selecting the sequence, and it shows up as footage in AE.
When importing through File->Adobe Dynamic Link->(project name)->(sequence) I get the same result.
Am I missing something? Are there settings needed to be changed despite me not changing them in the first place?
    I am on a Mac Pro, 8-core 2.66Ghz, 12GB RAM, using CS4 Master Collection
    Thanks.

I could but I never had to do that before. Not even a week ago. It's a very strange turn of events.
    I have found a workaround:
    File->Import->Adobe Premiere Pro Sequence.
That imports the sequence as a comp the way it's always been for me in the past.
But still, it's just not working right the traditional way.

  • How to import 1080i60 footage in FCE?

This is the continuation of a former question where I was wondering about the crappy results of exporting a sequence from FCE. Turns out that the problem occurs much earlier, during import.
So here it goes: I have a Sony CV550V camcorder recording in 1080i60 AVCHD. I use FCE Log and Transfer to import the footage. At this early stage ALREADY, I can see the fields offset with respect to one another in the Log and Transfer preview window. If I look at the footage by connecting my camcorder to my HD TV, I see no such artifact.
I looked at the FCE manual, tried all options of the Log and Transfer window (ZERO as far as I can see), but it does not seem that I have any choice on how FCE imports 1080i60 AVCHD footage. Am I doomed? I have heard from users of Sony Vegas software for instance, and they do not have such artifacts...
    Thanks for your advice.

"Completely wrong" is a bit harsh, but indeed the whole issue is addressed in threadID=2497894 "How to export/convert FCE movies into AVCHD format?"

  • Debug Event when importing HDV footage

    In short:
When I try to import HDV footage into a project (.mpeg format),
    I receive the following message:
    Premiere Pro Debug Event
premiere pro has encountered an error.
    [..\..\src\time.cpp-105]
Subsequently premiere fails to import the files...
I first noticed this problem last week, so I thought it might
be related to a product update. But even when uninstalling Premiere
Pro and re-installing it (thus being version 3.0) the problem
still exists. Updating to 3.2 doesn't solve the issue either.
    Does anyone recognize this issue?

  • AE is clipping a fraction of a second off my imported WMV footage, how can I stop this happening?

    Hi all,
I've created a new composition using some WMV footage and I want to add a bit of adobe illustrator art on at the end like a closing title. I don't need to extend the length of the movie, the art can just lay over the top of the imported footage.
The problem I have is when I import the footage (File > Import > File...) I import the WMV file and once inside the composition After Effects trims a tiny bit off the end of the imported footage where there's a fade to white then it ends on a black screen. It wouldn't be a problem if I wasn't losing part of someone's sentence as it fades out.
    Can anyone help me please?
For further info, I've set fps to 25 which is the same as the imported footage and I've tried importing it into longer compositions. Oh and also if it helps I'm working on a PC using After Effects 7 Professional.
I wonder if it might be something to do with the fade out in the imported footage???
Many thanks in advance for any responses.
    KarlOSX

The issue is most likely with the source file. The last keyframe interval is not complete and thus AE makes wrong assumptions about the clip duration because it stops at the last full keyframe. This usuall happens, if you use VBR encoding in the WMV files and leave everything at the Automatic settings. If you plan on using WMV files for your work in Ae, you should export them differentlyx from whatever otehr app you use, that is with a fixed keyframe interval and a constant data rate. As Rick said, though, re-editing already compressed files is not the best way to work, so if you have full control over the source material, consider otehr file formats, CoDecs and so on...
