Importing DPM 2010 tapes to DPM2012 SP1 - Endless Recataloging?

I've got a DPM2012 SP1 server that I'm using to replace my existing DPM2010 server.  I've got quite a lot of tapes that I need to import - they show up correctly as (Imported) <tapename> when I inventory them, but when I try to view content
on the tape, I get an error saying I need to recatalog.  I perform the catalog, and the same error recurs.  I'm familiar with the general process, and have done it before in 2010, so I think there's something funky going on.  Any help appreciated!
Environment:
DPM2012 SP1 v4.1.3408.0
Windows Server 2008R2 (fully patched) running on VMWare ESXi 5.0
Dell TL2000 library with iSCSI bridge and LTO4 drives

I also experienced the endless recataloging issue with DPM 2012 R2. The solution turned out to be to change the tape drive driver from the IBM driver that windows chooses by default to the generic circa 2006 Microsoft `LTO Tape Drive` driver.  The telltale
was that, in addition to endless recataloging, DPM was also unable to erase the tapes.

    Hi,
You can try to reproduce the problem outside of DPM using some external utilities.  If you have more than one drive in the library, run the test against both drives simultaneously to simulate multiple backup jobs running.  If you get an error
before the tape fills you can use net helpmsg errorcode to see what the error was.
Download the DPMerasetape.zip file from the following link and extract to c:\temp folder.

  • DPM 2010 How to use autoloader tape library

    Dear Team
    Hello All,
We have implemented the DPM 2010 successfully in our organization. But while creating the protection group it shows the tape library name but not the individual tapes.
So, our requirement is as below.
We want to create the daily backup in one tape. and weekly backup in another tape.
How we can select the specific tape Slot in library for different backup?
An early response will be highly appreciated.
    Regards
    Selvaraj.S
    [email protected]

    Hi,
DPM has a flat tape handling model and does not provide the direct ability to assign certain tapes or slots to specific backup jobs.   Depending on the retention period of the two goals, DPM should use separate tapes by default.  You have
some control by tweaking the TapeWritePeriodRatio and ExpiryToleranceRange settings.
See the following resources for more information on the above parameters:

  • DPM 2010; migrated DPM protection group to new storage pool ; data on source disk is not expiring

I am running DPM 2010 with 4 storage pool disks. 2 are iSCSI; 1 is SAS; the fourth, also iSCSI, was recently deployed to replace the SAS storage pool disk.
    (1) iSCSI
    (2) iSCSI
    (3) SAS - Source
    (4) iSCSI - Destination
Initially we tried to migrate the entire data source (3) to the new iSCSI storage pool disk destination (4). This failed
Set-ProtectionGroup: The allocation of disk space for storage pool volume failed because there is not enough unallocated disk space in the storage pool (ID: 358). (Sorry, I was not allowed to attach an image).
We believe the source disk previously created dynamic links to the long-term retention device (tape) which resulted in exceeding the available space on the new destination iSCSI storage pool disk. The source storage pool disk was totaling ~2.5TB, but needed
    ~9TB for the destination.
Instead I've tried to migrate the DPM protection group. The migration was successful. I followed the procedure outlined here
"Microsoft DPM 2012 Sp1 – How To Migrate Data Source using MigrateDatasourceDataFromDPM by ICTtechie" (Sorry, I was not allowed to include a link).
My understanding / expectation was that the data on the source disk would expire within 5 days (as this is our retention time set for disk replication); instead data started to expire from the other 2 iSCSI (1), (2) storage pool disks.
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks

  • Restore from DPM 2010 backup in DPM 2012

    Hi,
I am planning to move from current DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 R2.
In-place upgrade to DPM2012 does not seem to be possible due to upgrade errors so I will have to wipe off the physical server and install DPM2012 from scratch. I use virtual tape drive (firestreamer) and backup to disk for long term protection.
The problem is how will I read my existing DPM2010 backups in DPM2012.
Is there a way to attach old virtual tapes  and be able to restore data from it?
    Thanks for all your feedback.
    Tech Farmer

    Hi Eugene,
    Thanks for your reply.
Your solution will work for inplace upgrade. My scenario is building DPM2012r2 from scratch., which means I will not be restoring DPM2010 DB. Due to this, DPM will have no record of the tape catalog/contents.
Firestreamer will be able to mount the vTape but not identify whats in the vTape.
With this in mind, I trying to figure out if there is a way to read the old virtual tapes (files) in the new DPM2012r2.

  • DPM 2010 - Getting errors when viewing reports

    Microsoft DPM Forum,
I am getting the following error when attempting to view reports in DPM 2010:
An error occurred during client rendering.
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
Cannot create a connection to data source 'DLS'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection)
Cannot open database "DPMDB" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'servername\DPMR$servername'.
This is occurring after I rebuilt the OS on the DPM server to resolve a "tape system disconnect" issue that plagued us since November of 2013.
Any idea how to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

    Mike,
Thank you for that post.  Yes, I saw that while I was researching a possible solution to the problem.  No dice.  However, I reached out to Prosenjit Kanjilal of the Microsoft DPM Support Team (as he was emailing me on our re-occurring issue
of Event ID: 15 errors - see other thread).  He had me do the following:
Open SQL Studio and connect to the instance
    Go to Security->Logins
Now Add 'servername\DPMR$servername' if it is not already added
I also had to add the
dbowner role to the DPMDB database under 'user mapping' for this specific user to actually resolve the issue.  The user wasn't listed in the Logins in SQL Studio.
    Thanks again!

  • DPM 2010 installation failure (SQL-server Reporting Services Problem)

    Hi everyone,
The last 2 days I have been trying to get DPM 2010 installed on a DC. I know this is not recommended, but for our company with the current setup it's the only way to do it.
I have been reading some Microsoft articles (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399416.aspx) about doing this but I fail to do so.
I have made all of the right service accounts (I guess) and am doing everything in the guide but still get the same error message over and over again:
Setup has detected that the installation of Reporting Services is not correctly configured or no instance of Reporting Services is linked to DPM2010 of SQL Server
I just can't get my head around it. This is the error message when I try to install DPM 2010 using an existing SQL-database which I have configured in the SQL 2008-server sp1 installation.
I have enclosed some screenshots so you could maybe check some things that are not correct? Hopefully we can get this issue resolved, because it's driving me crazy to be honest!
Physical server which is ADC and where I need to install SQL-server and DPM: VMBACKUP
The service account for DPM is: DPMSQLSvcsAcct
Also have another service account: DPMR$VMBACKUP
I have also enclosed the error log located in C:\DPMLogs\

  • DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 Upgrade

    Hello
We did an in-place upgrade on a few of our DPM 2010 servers to DPM 2012 and it went well. In the Reporting section, we have configured tape management reports on a weekly basis. The issue is that the information on 'overdue tapes' is not mentioned in the
report which is now being sent. This issue persists on all the DPM servers that we upgraded. Any suggestion?

  • VM Protection running on Hyper-V 2012 R2 with DPM 2010

    Hi everyone,
We recently setup  a new Hyper-V 2012 R2 server hosting virtual machine running with a Win2012 R2 server OS and 2008R2 standard Edition
Our backup solution is still running DPM 2010.
As I understand from the DPM Protection Support Matrix, You can only protect virtual machine running on a hyper-v server under Windows 2012 R2 OS with DPM 2012 R2. Isn't there possible any walkaround to have the vm protection working on dpm2010?
Otherwise, if we choose to protect the VM at guest level instead of host-level, is DPM able to perform the recovery point?
For instance, we've got a VM running a SQL database. We would like specifically to back up that SQL  database running on that virtual machine. Is DPM able to perfom that job?
    Regards,
    Evan

    Hi,
To remain in a supported configuration you need to a DPM 2012 R2 server to protect the Windows 2012 R2 hyper-v server.  Unfortunately, the path to get there from DPM 2012 is not an easy one.
    Upgrade steps.

    2) Update the Agents to 3.0.8195.0
    3) Backup the DPM 2010 database.

    12) Install latest DPM 2012 R2 update and update agents.
Else, you could stand up a new dedicated DPM 2012 R2 server from scratch to protect that new server and leave the DPM 2010 as is for current protection.

  • Migrate data from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012

    Hello.
I am currently using DPM 2010. I want to move to DPM 2012, but not as an upgrade. I am using a 20 TB storage pool for nightly backups and tape for weekly backups. The goal of the upgrade is to upgrade the OS as well as DPM, so this will be a fresh installation,
not an in place upgrade. Is there a way to get the recovery point information for tapes and the storage pool migrated into DPM 2012 from DPM 2010?

This topic is closer to system center forum and even there the answer is well beyond the scope. I would recommend

  • DPM 2010 Short and Long Term goals

My question is related to size restrictions.
Our existing DPM 2010 is setup with two protections groups, System State, and a Default (file) protection group. Both are set up the same. A co worker recently had to re-create a protection group due to his negligence and deleted it without looking at how
it was setup in the first place, since then I've been having errors in backing up to tape:
Synchronization frequency is set to just before recovery point
    Short term goals are:
Recovery points are at 8:00 AM, 12:00PM, 6:00PM Everyday, Express Full is 8:00PM Everyday
    Long term goals are:
Retention range 2 weeks, Frequency Weekly (1 recovery point every 1 week for the last 2 weeks)
Full backups are set to Saturday at 11:00 PM
Here's the thing, we have 3x3TB external drives that, historically have been swapped out weekly (Monday mornings, using Firestreamer for tape emulation). Since the co-worker broke, and re-created the protection groups, when we view DPM Console on Monday
morning, we see that the backup jobs are failing, the 3TB drive is full.
Could this 3TB drive be full due to this weekly swapping out when it is set to a retention range of 2 weeks? Obviously, it could be because the protection group actually contains that much data, but I'm trying to wrap my head around sync frequency, recovery
points and how that works into recovery goals.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
Right. After the registry key is added, all new recovery points written to tape will show they expire at midnight (12:00am) on they day they expire so any tape jobs that run later that day will be able to use that tape after the expiry
    date.
To prevent tape jobs from failing because there are no tapes available, you can also add this registry value.
During a new tape backup or if a tape becomes full and there are no other tapes marked free, Free (contains data) or expired in the library, DPM will raise an alert to prompt for another free tape to continue backup.  The same is true during a
restore, if the needed tape is not in the library an alert will be raised.  By Default, DPM It will wait for
1 hour before failing the job.
This prompting timeout can be configured by the registry entry “PromptingTimeOut” under “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\1.0\Prompting”
    PromptingTimeOut:REG_Dword:43200000  (dec) = 12hrs
    The Formula is   (#hrs * 1000 * 60 * 60)
    1HR =  1*1000*60*60 =  3600000  decimal
So for each hour to wait, multiply by 3600000.
    8hrs = 28800000  decimal
    Restart the DPMRA service.

  • DPM 2010 Shell Cmdlets usage leading to Powershell crash

    Hi all,
I have 71 DPM 2010 servers located at various places in the world. The most of them have a good and reliable network connection while some of them are connected via Sat-Link. All of my DPM 2010 servers have the same version, and are all running in identical
W2K8 Servers with Powershell 3 installed on them. I've made a script to inventorize Datasource Replica disk usage/allocation, shadow volume disk usage/allocation and the number of recovery points, their size. The goal of this script is to do the job that DPM
2010 should normaly do, for instance, deleting recovery points above retention date because it is not always the case... File recovery points number grows to their maximum (64) and for system State (because there is no User recovery on these ressources) their
number can be above 100 and generally it's about 150...
The script is running well locally, but if I try yo run a single Get-Datasource from one of my servers targeting another server, sometimes it leads to a simple Powershell crash... I also tried an invoke-command as job it's the same, the job returns nothing
but it is marked as completed or sometimes as failed. This happens always on some server and on the other only sometimes...
I really don't understand where is the origin of this problem... As anyone encountered such behaviour ?
Thanks a lot in advance ;-)

I did not find a solution to my problem yet, but I solved a part of it...
The first of all "Powershell crash" was solved by issuing a Disconnect-DPMServer before each Get-DataSource...
The second problem solved was the fact that the Get-DataSource cmdlet required the parameter <DPMServer> to be fully in Uppercase...
The last problem remaining is the Invoke-command that continue to fail... Here is my code :
    $DPMServerStatusList = @()
    foreach($DPMServer in $DPMServerList){
    if(Test-Connection -Count 1 -BufferSize 16 -ComputerName $DPMServer){

  • Importing DV/HDV Tapes

    Hi,
I would like to know if there is any software to import DV/HDV tapes to my Macbook pro (doing the same job that we can do using the "Log and Capture" window) ?
I don't want to use the FCP to do it because I want to use it at the same time in another tasks.
    Thanks

You cannot capture video AND use FCP at the same time doing something else. Meaning you cannot capture video AND edit video at the same time on the same machine. Just not possible. Nor can you capture and compress video at the same time.
To be able to capture video while you are working on something else in FCP....you'd need another machine.

  • DPM 2010 Scheduled Jobs Disappear rather than Run

I have a situation where I have a DPM server that appears to be functioning fine, but none of the scheduled jobs run.  No errors are given, there are no Alerts, and there is nothing in the Event log (Application and System) which indicates a failure.
All my Protection Groups show a green tick to indicate that they are fine, but the last successful backup for all of them is Friday the 8th of February.
If I go to Monitoring and Jobs I see the jobs scheduled, but when the time comes for the job to run, it does not go into the "All jobs in progress", it just merely disappears, like thus:
    And a few minutes later,
As you can see, the jobs disappear from the queue, and the total number of jobs decreases accordingly.  These jobs do not go into any of the other 3 Statusses (Completed, Failed or In Progress), they just disappear without a trace.
There is some unallocated space, albeit not much (Used space: 21 155,05 GB Unallocated space: 469,16 GB). If space was an issue I would expect to see errors to indicate this.
DPM 2010 running version 3.0.8193.0 (hotfix rollup package 6) using remote instance of SQL 2008 which is functioning fine.  I have tried stopping/starting the services, and even rebooted the server twice.  The remote instance of SQL server is using
a domain account as its service account.  There are no pending Windows updates, i.e. it is fully up-to-date.
The System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 Troubleshooting Guide (July 2010) does not show how to troubleshoot this particular probelm.
Does anybody know how to resolve this issue or which logs might help me troubleshoot it?

    OK,
Did you change the SQL Agent user account ?
If so, DPM enters the SQL Agent account name into the registry and later we check that account each time the DPM engine launches.  The internal interfaces to DPM are secured using this account so the account name needs to match the account the SQL Agent
    is using.
    Step 1
In the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Setup alter  both
SqlAgentAccountName and SchedulerJobOwnerName keys to reflect the SQL Agent user account being used.
    Step 2
Update DCOM launch and access permissions to match what was granted to the Microsoft$DPM$Acct account.
