Importing DV in iMovie09

I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and iLife09. I am now trying to import videos from my JVC DV camera. iMovie recognizes the camera and reproduces the videos without problems. But when I try to import them, well it rewinds the tape, it signals the beginning of the import process, but then ... nothing happens. The system is stuck, the preview window shows the importing sign, but nothing happens.
Can anyone help, please?
Thank you

Yes, DV is always imported at full quality - via Firewire, of course. It's simply a digital file transfer from tape to your computer. Beware of judging video quality on your laptops' monitor - it's will not look as good, for many tech reasons - it will seem darker and softer. It will look fine once you output it to video again.

  • How to import a wmv file into imovie09

i got a friend to film me scuba diving and he put it on a SDHC but imovie09 wont let me import it into imovie09 as he already did some editing on it and added music. Is there any possible way as i only want the video footage ideally but i dont mind even with the music. Please help in very simple steps please Thank you.

    try this
Use MPEG Streamclip (free i think)
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
use MPEG Streamclip to convert your WMV files to Apple Intermediate Codec
Then import the AIC files (which will have a .mov extension) into iMovie 09.

  • IMovie09 poor video quality - very strange

I'm putting together a sequence of movie trailers using clips downloaded from youtube. These are 360p .mp4 files.
I import them into iMovie09 and when played from my event library they look exactly the same as the originals. The quality is pretty good (surprisingly!)
However, when I drag a clip to my project and play it directly from there, the quality is considerably worse. There is little detail in the blacks, obvious compression artifacts and miscolouring of dark areas.
When I then export the project as a quicktime movie, h264 or any other format the exported video bears the same artifacts as were visible in the project library.
I understand why the exported movie may suffer compression artifacts, but I cannot see why the clip within my project before export should look so much worse than the same clip in my event library.
I'm using iMovie09 on Snow Leopard.
    Any ideas?

  • It's not clear to me why within the Apple eccosystem of products something as basic as editing a MOV file recorded with an iPhone requires any 3PV software for conversion so that it may be edited in iMovie09.  Is this an iMovie Bug?

Is this a bug within the iMovie?  This seems as if it should be extremely simple.  I recorded a movie with my iPhone 4.  iPhone records that in the standard apple MOV format.  I can play the file in Quicktime.  However, when I try to drag and drop it into iMovie09 or import it into iMovie09 it is not allowed.  It used to be said that Apple just "Works".
    Sean

I own the movies and I want them to stay in my iTunes library basically forever.
But in both cases the file name no longer shows in the movie list, so I don't know how to re-download it from the Cloud.
iTunes prefs > Store > Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.
This will show all your iTunes purchases in your library with a cloud icon down arrow. Click the icon to redownload or click on Play to stream without downloading.
Also see this , -> Download past purchases
and techncially, you don't "own" the movie, You simply have a license to use it.
Yet the first thing iTunes does when you hit the delete key is tell you that it will remove the movie forever from all devices and the library.
Actually, no it does not tell you that.
FYI: You should keep copies of all yoru iTnue spurahses as the labels/movie studios/copyright owners can pull their product at anytime and it won't be available to redownload.

  • IMovie09/iMovie HD and Xacti HD - setup help please

I am not a video expert so be gentle with me!
I have a Xacti HD camera. After reading some bulletin boards I have now set this to record at HD-SHQ (1280x720 30fps), but I have lots of video shot previously at Full-HD (1920x1080 60field/s). I have copied all this 1080 video from the camera's card onto an external drive. I want to import it into iMovie09 or iMovieHD to edit and produce movies.
I have MPEG Streamclip and have set it up as advised in the useful YouTube video on importing Xacti footage. I open the mp4 clips in MPEG Streamclip and export to Quicktime using Apple Intermediate Codec 1280x720 (HDTV720p), which works fine.
iMovie09 can see and import the resulting .mov file - but the footage viewed in iMovie09 has noticeable lines, which I think is something to do with interlacing. I have tried the export process with the 'Deinterlace video' box checked and unchecked but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
I also have iMoveHD, which does seem to import the files without these lines, but it doesn't generate any thumbnails. It's hard to edit when the clips are just black (though they show very well in the main window).
I would be so grateful if someone could advise me in simple terms as to the best setup to get my Xacti footage into one of these two apps so that I can have fun making movies instead of spending hours trying to understand the world of codecs!
Hopefully this advice will help all those out there with Xactis and Macs, which must be many hundreds if not thousands by now.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I have an Xacti camera as well, but mine only shoots in 720p, so I don't know anything about the interlacing stuff. But I was wondering, why are you using another program to convert your files? Both iMovie '09 and iMovie HD can import .mp4 files, and iMovie '09 just plays the video as is (i.e. without converting it or anything).
Although I have heard that iMovie '09 is having a problem with interlaced video, but I'm not sure on the details on that.

  • IPhone 4 video to iMovie 09 (iMac)

I have been taking videos in my iPhone 4 and they are in format .mov. However when I transfer them to my iMac (using image capture or the iTunes) and then try to import them to iMovie09 the iMovie does not recognize the format, in other words I cannot open them in iMovie 09 for further edition. Can anybody tell how can I open those videos in iMovie? Am I doing something wrong? by the way direct transfer from the iPhone to the iMovie does not work either.
Thanks a lot for the help, this is driving me crazy.

...So I decided to connect my iPhone to the computer and import the movie in true HD. I see the video on my computer in HD but when I upload the HD movie to YouTube through the web browser then movie is still blurry.
Shortly after uploading it to YouTube (via web browser) your video will be immediately available in a lower resolution quality.
You will have to *wait for YouTube to "Process" your HD video, before it becomes available in 720p*.
It can take anywhere from 1 to several hours.

  • Quality loss

My original footage was in MTS format (AVCHD), which I converted into MPEG-4.
    Both files have fantastic quality.
It's basically an interview with a black suit in front of a white screen.
When I edited the video and exported into a .MOV HD file (1280x720).
Once it got done chewing threw, I noticed a VERY pixilated black suit (that used to be flawless).
In the editor alone, it already looks bad, but I figured that might be because I haven't exported it.
    Why is this?
And more importantly, how can I fix this problem so I have a good product?
Any help and input would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I'm here looking for the answer to I think the same problem. I have a 1280x688 very high quality mp4 of a black and white film with a lot of night scenes and dark shadows etc.
When I import it into iMovie09 it suddenly looks terrible. Anytime people are in a dark room or something with shadows or whatever, there is extreme pixelation of all the low-lights and they jump all around hopping from one shade of gray to another (extremely distracting). An entire wall of a room can look like jaggies moving all around.
One thing is that, even though I'm importing and then export with the full original size options selected, the movie seems to come out in 960 size anyway. But that may be separate issue. The main thing is that the movie seems like it looses its number of colors during import. But my perception of this is useless to me as long as I don't know how to do anything about it.
Anyone have any ideas what's going on with this?

  • Working with flash videos .flv format

I got a bunch of .flv flash videos that I have to use (And archive first).
The only program I found that display those files are
    - Adobe Media Player and
    - VLC
I would rather be able to import them in iView Media pro to tag them first but since I cannot import them into iMovie09 either I ask here.
    What should I do?
    - bulk convert them first so that iView Media pro (and iMovie) would import them?
    Thanks for your creative ideas

I have the same issue. Everything works great in Flash 7 and
    8. I am playing .flv files from a different spot in the server and
I am calling them from a swf file.
In Flash 9 the file won't play. Here is my sample file:

The quick fix security.allowDomain("*"); has no impact on this
call. I am using my_video.attachVideo(stream_ns); to load the

I have changed the mime type in another server, restarted and
I have the same problem. Any help would be great!

  • Importing mini dv movie into iMovie09 with USB

My Sony DCR-HC24 mini dv camera only has a USB port which means when I connect it to my mac book pro using iMovie09, it does not recognise the video camera so I can not import anything. Any ideas? Is it as simple as buying a USB to fire wire cable or hub? Thanks

Your camera does have a FireWire out port - see this Sony article:
    http://www.sony.co.uk/product/sdh-minidv/dcr-hc24e
Sony calls this port iLINK (DV out). MiniDV can be imported to iMovie only when the camera is connected by FireWire (iLINK or IEE1394) - USB will not work for importing miniDV. You need either a 4 pin to 6 pin cable or a 4 pin to 9 pin cable , depending on whether your Mac has a FW400 or FW800 port.
Look for a port on your camera labelled DV - that is probably the FireWire connection point.

  • Clip dates lost on import from iMovieHD to iMovie09

So I have tons of old video I'm finally going to edit with iMovie09. Some of this is on tape, and some is on the hard drive as iMovieHD projects. Both types imported into iMovie09. The only difference was that the clips from video kept the time/date info for the clips, while the imports from iMovieHD didn't have the correct data. Every date for example has an August 30th, date regardless of when it was shot. This date is when I imported the video in the to iMovieHD. Now if I go into iMovie HD and select a clip and view it's info, it does show the correct date of the individual clip.
Any thoughts on this. I wouldn't care about this except that I'm mixing in other video in the same date range, and I want the events sorted by dates.

I can right click a clip in iMovie HD to see that date, then I go to iMovie 09, and chose "File > Adjust Clip Date and Time" and change the date. Now in my case I didn't care about exact time, but just date. So I took a number of clips that had the same shoot date, and adjusted them all at once. As it happens I had two computers, which made things easier so I could have the same clips open in iMovie HD on one, and iMovie 09 on another. This made it easy, but same thing could have been done with one computer, but would just need to toggle back and forth between apps.

  • Importing VGA 640x480 into Imovie09

I recently bought a Panasonic GH-1 and shot some video in MOTION JPEG VGA 640x480. Next I discovered that my Powerbook G-4 was too old and slow to do much editing so I bought a new MacBook Pro. Now I find that I can't import the video into iMovie09. I read one post that said you could load VGA into iPhoto and then into iMovie but that doesn't seem to work for me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could I load an older version of iMovie, import the video into that and then somehow export to 09? Any help would be much appreciated.

I recently imported Motion Jpeg/A at 1920x1080 into iMovie 09 successfully.
    Did you try FILE/IMPORT/MOVIES...?
If that did not work, try dragging your movie into MPEG Streamclip and exporting to QuickTIme as Motion Jpeg/A in the original dimensions.
It could also be the case that iMovie 09 can handle the Motion JPEG but cannot handle the Audio Codec. In this case, MPEG Streamclip can also help. FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME as Motion Jpeg with audio codec set to uncompressed.
Open your movie in QuickTIme Player and click WINDOW/INSPECTOR. You should see the codecs next to the word "Format".
    Good luck.

  • IMovie09 Shuts Down When I Try to Import

I've been trying to upload some videos from my Canon FS100 camcorder using iMovie09 but every time I click "Import" and select this camcorder, it completely shuts down and I get an error saying that iMovie shut down unexpectedly.
This hasn't happened before and I've had the camcorder for a year (and my Mac for a year and a half).
    What could be the problem?
Thanks in advance. Tell me if you need additional info.

I have a Canon HF 20 records to flash memory. I cannot import a clip more than about 3.5 minutes. To get a clip that size in usually takes 3-4 tries with iMovie 09 locking up and I must Force Quit it. Eventually a clip this size will import. Under 2 minutes usually goes the first try and over 3.5 minutes I have yet to be successful. Very disappointing because Apple claims iMovie 09 is compatible. I was having the same problem with my old OS and iMovie 08. Apple recommended upgrading so $169 later I have Snow Leopard and iMovie 09 and the same problem. I have sent a note to Apple and wish this would be fixed ASAP. As a side note, my son can download video from my camera to his Toshiba laptop running Vista with no problems. The only reason I have my Mac is for video. Makes you wonder doesn't it.

  • Hi 8 data loss import to iMovie09 vs 07

Is there really loss of data when importing old Hi8 video into iMovie09 using an ADC that doesn't occur if importing into iMovie 07 ? Have been told that iMovie 09 drops every other line of video and that imovie07 doesn't, so you should import old video into 07 and then move file to 09. Anyone know for sure ?

It's when iM09 EDITS that it "deinterlaces" (drops lines) with interlace video to convert it to progressive video. So it won't do you any good to import with any other product.
Rather, you need to import using iM09 and then externally convert to a codec that iM09 will not deinterlace. When converting, you want to adaptively (smartly) deinterlaces so iM09 will not create ugly scaling artifacts when you use certain FX.
No time to describe details here as I'm off to Asia for a month. (You can find details in my ebook.)
I've also got tons of V8 and Hi8 to edit so I've really worked on this problem.

  • IMovie09 cannot import DV stream

I have a video mixer which have a 4 pins 1394 DV output. I have been using it to output video stream into iMovie4 running on a MBP G4. I just got a new MBP 2010 which have iMovie09 and a 9 pins to 4 pins firewire cable. When I try to import from camera, it doesn't allow the firewire DV as an option. It only shows iSight camera. I tried to connect the firewire cable to a camcorder and it can recognize it and import from it. Only when I connect it to the video mixer that it doesn't recognize it.
I pull out my old MBP G4 again and it can connect to the video mixer and capture video from it. Due to deadline, I use the MBP G4 to record a two hours video production. When I am done. I copy the resulting project to my new MBP. Now MBP cannot recognize the project and cannot open it.
    I have two questions:
    1) How can I capture DV from a non-tape device (which do not support any of the firewire control command to FF, REW etc.) using iMovie09?
    2) How can I import iMovie4 projects into iMovie09?
    I have a MBP running OSX 10.6.4, iMovie09
My old MBP G4 is running OSX 10.4.11, iMovie 4.0.1

Project-Import is not supported.. but you can import the timeline as a single, solid, consolidated 'movie' .. so, any title or dissolve is 'as is' and not editable any more. export from within iM4 as 'Full Quality' Quicktime.mov, or, inside the iM-project folder, you should find the timeline.mov ..
