Importing DVD-RAM vs. DVD-R into imovie'08

Hi,
I have an older Panasonic model VDR-M50PP which records unto both DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. Over the years, I have made recordings in both types of discs... I know one of these is incompatible with iMovie but I am confused as to which. Can someone explain? I'm anxious to get my home movies into iMovie, but I guess I picked the wrong camcorder all those years ago. But if I can get either my DVD-RAM discs or my DVR-R discs to transfer, then at least I'll have something to work with. This camcorder has an USB cable and a Windows disc driver. Thanks!
Fio

I have an older Panasonic model VDR-M50PP which records unto both DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. Over the years, I have made recordings in both types of discs... I know one of these is incompatible with iMovie but I am confused as to which. Can someone explain?
Compatibility issues can most simply be divided into two categories: either the content is recognized for what it is or it is not. In the first case, iMovie '08 will open/switch to the "Import from Camera..." mode and import/convert the content to an iMovie '08 edit compatible compression format. In the second, the content is recognized as a file and is handled by the "Import Movies..." module which does not perform any automatic conversions. The ultimate reason for the failure of a particular media format (hardware incompatibility, media incompatibility, format incompatibility, improper work flow, etc.) is immaterial if all you want to do is get the content into iMovie '08 (or iMovie HD for that matter).
Once you reach this disjunction, there are three possible strategies -- find the reason for the incompatibility and correct it (IF YOU CAN), image the data to your hard drive so that iMovie '08 will recognize the content as being on/from a camcorder, or simply convert the content manually to a compression format acceptable to any specific or all video editors.
1) As incompatibility and work flow issues are usually unique in nature or next to impossible to diagnose without being physically preset to observe the work flow, I won't attempt to address this area here.
2) In the case of HDD or DVD content, the data files/folders can be placed in an image file. When opened, the image content will appears as a separate volume as if a camcorder had been plugged into you computer. I don't use this option wery ofent but when I have used it, an ISO image file seemed to work for me most often.
3) In most cases, I would personally recommend the manual conversion of your content which I assume to be MPEG-2 video multiplexed with AC3 audio in an MPEG, VOB, VRO, or similar file container. As such compression is not natively compatible with the QT structure nor editable by the QT engine, a third-party MPEG-based conversion application is required. I usually use MPEG Streamclip here since it is a free but full featured converter application which complements the capabilities of QT Pr which I also use for other tasks. Unfortunately, MPEG Streamclip is designed to rely on your complement of installed QT components and, thus, requires the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) be installed. I prefer this combination as it allows me to convert directly to any of the iMovie '08 native editing compression formats -- DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, and compatible MPEG-4 and H.264 profiles along with their commonly associated audio compression formats. Depending on the files types involved, iSquint (free)/Visual Hub (pay-ware) applications will also work if you already have one or the other but are no longer supported by their developer. FFmpegX (donation-ware) and MPEG2 Works (pay-ware) should also work. (With the exception of MPEG2 Works, these applications do not require the QT MPEG-2 Playback component.)

    I have 70 DVD's of home movies made on my Mac, is it possible to import these DVD's into iMovie 08'? If so, how is this done? I'm not sure if this is something that I would really want to do but perhaps to have all of my videos into one video library makes sense (similar to how we import cd's into itunes)

    DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing... so, any conversion process will add a (dramatic) loss in picture quality.
    for usage in iLife, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:

  • Importing DVD Movies into iMovie with anything OTHER than a camcorder

    I tried to look around the discussion board for my questions but 643 pages is a lot. This question has probably been asked 8,000,000 times but I will be 8,000,001.
    I recorded some video footage on to a DVD-R disc. I tried to insert this disc into my Mac Mini and I cannot import the video footage into iMovie. I called Apple Support and they told me that once its in a format where other DVD devices can read it, I cannot import it into any Apple Software.
    My question is, how can I use my DVD footage in iMovie? Is there additional software that I need to buy? (SUCH AS:)
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    I have no idea what these programs do and I would appreciate it if someone can direct me to the correct one if one of these can help.
    Can I convert this footage into some sort of file (Quicktime or something) that will be accepted in iMovie?
    If this question was asked already (which i am sure it has) please direct me to the link where I can get my questions answered. Thanks.

  • Importing DVD video into iMovie

    I am a novice at video. I have DVDs of 20 year old 8mm Camcorder video that I want to edit in iMovie. I am using HandBrake to make mp4 movies which I can then import into iMovie. But it takes hours for HandBrake to encode the mp4 files and then even longer for iMovie to make thumbnails even of just a few minutes of video. What am I missing? There must be an easier way to do this???.

    I got everything to work using the Disk Utility except I didn't get any audio imported to iMovie. Funny thing is when I use DVD player to play the mounted image, it plays both video and audio perfectly. I just can't get the audio imported properly into iMovie 08.
    Any idea?

    I m working on a project where I have been given a bunch of dvd'. The footage on these dvd's was converted from a camcorder. The dvd's are in a read only permission format. Can I import these into IMovie? If so, how?

    A. No not with any standard program in You Mac
    B. Violating Copyright and Comercial DVDs: Are not even alowed to be discussed
    in this forum
    C. Using Your own material from previously done DVDs
    • Put DVD in DVD-player and connect a miniDV tape Camera and copy
    • Or use a program that can back engineer to streamingDV that iMovie or FCE/P can use
    I prefere Roxio Toast™ to do this
    D. All methods reduces the quality - BEST is to use original material and re-edit.

  • Importing DVD files into iMovie

    If I own a purchased DVD of a football game, (and the appropriate software to create it into VOB files), and an iTunes audio (aiff) version of the radio broadcast of the same game, is there a way to import into iMovie the video files (from the DVD)? Then I can import (from iTunes) the audio, and have a radio commentary version of the football game. I assume I can then (using the correct software) shrink the file size to fit onto a 4.3 gig DVD, and burn the final project. Is this correct process? Thank you for your assisstance.

    I have created DVD's from old home movies & I'm trying to import them into IMovie, but it doesn't work....what am I doing wrong?

    A DVD is the final destination, not intended for editing. You should have created miniDV tapes instead. The miniDV tapes have better quality that a DVD and lends itself to editing.
    It IS possible to import a DVD, but it's a bit complicated, costs money, time and effort:

  • Can I import DVD's into imovie HD

    Here is my question. I have recently had some photos taken of myself and the photographer gave me an actual DVD (like a movie that you can watch on a real DVD player) of the proofs in a slide show. I would like to post this movie (it's short) on my iweb website but can not figure out a way to import the DVD into imovie HD so I can then make it smaller for use in iweb. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hello Jonathan,
    you will have to convert the files contained in the DVD to a format readable by Quicktime. Normally you would convert the DVD to full quality DV format but as you are going to post it on the web, consider resizing it (e.g. 320x240) and using a suitable codec (e.g. Sorensen3 or MPEG-4). A movie in DV format would be too large a file to view online.

  • Import DVD back into iMove

    I burned an iMovie slideshow in toast onto a DVD.

    I lost the project on my HD,and a lot more stuff.
    How can I import the project back into iMove from the DVD?
    I keep geting a error message. When I try.

    You need to use an application that will convert MPEG 2 video to .mov or DV. There are many that do this including Toast 7, Cinematize, MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Pro with the Quicktime MPEG 2 Component, DVDxDV and many others.

  • Import home video DVD's into iMovie

    I want to import my home video DVD's into iMovie for editing and backup. What is the best way to do this? I have already tried creating a disk image, but somehow when I open these images with iMovie, some parts of the original video are missing. (for example the video on DVD is 60 minutes, but the video opened on iMovie is 50 minutes). I also tried to convert to MPEG 2 using MPEG Streamclip, and purchased the MPEG2 Playback component from Apple Store, but it turns out that this component was intended for earlier versions of OS X, so I could not even install it. I am currently at a lockdown, please help me out!!!

    There are directions on the MPEG Streamclip website on how to get the MPEG2 Playback component installed on your computer (I'm assuming your running Mac OS X 10.7). I'm cutting and pasting them here in case someone else runs into the same problems.
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
    The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
    To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
    The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
    Also read the information for Snow Leopard below.
    Snow Leopard and MPEG-2 Playback Component
    The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe the content of the /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, and delete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall the MPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.
    If you are going to upgrade to Snow Leopard
    Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it. Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the /System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password if necessary).
    If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard
    You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
    If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back in time until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that file and then click Restore.
    If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains the installer. Use Spotlight to search for "QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg": if you find a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image, double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.
    If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple Online Store but you can't find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can download the file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple ID used when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID then go to Apple iforgot). Visit the Apple Online Store, click on "Account" in the store menu, then click "Downloadable Software Purchases," enter your Apple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to download it again.
    If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation of Final Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final Cut Studio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... command to get to the /Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/ folder inside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or the QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall the MPEG-2 component.

    I have some home DVDs with 3 types of files on them (.BUP, .IFO, and .VOB), and they are all grayed out when I try to import them in iMovie. iMovie help says the format has to be in MPEG-4, DV, or .mov files
    What's the recommended converter/process to get the DVD video into iMovie?
    All I really want to do with the video is capture clips from the DVDs

    Hi Appleman1958,
    Here's situation: I have several DVDs that were burned from home videos (high school football games, etc.). I don't know whether they were burned using iMovie/iDVD or some other program. I need to pull clips from the individual DVDs and combine them into a new DVD. I've edited movies that were recorded on my digital camera with iMovie and burned the project to a DVD using iDVD, so that part isn't a problem.
    My questions are as follows:
    1. I downloaded the QuickTime component and Streamclip, per the instructions in your post dated 12/5/09. After I installed each application (or thought I did), I dragged the files from the "download" folder to the trash. Now I don't see the applications in the Finder. Did I uninstall the applications when I dragged the downloaded files to the trash? Also, the file types in the trash are "Disk Images" (.dmg). Is that correct?
    1. Will the QuickTime MPEG2 Component/Streamclip process work for DVDs that weren't created using Apple software?
    Thanks in advance for your help.
