Importing & encoding dv assets in iDVD 6 - also 16:9 mix with 4:3

This could go under iDVD, or iMovie or Final Cut Express, choices, choices...
Will try to be clear & succint in the scenario:
Making a quick DVD containing several discrete movies.
Just upgraded to iLife 6. Did the edits in this.
Saved out individual movies (3 to 12 min ea) as full quality *.dv to optimize space for the movie projects.
Now I am ready to assemble several 3 to 12 minute movies into the iDVD project.
iDVD4 would show you encoding of files as I recall, a progress bar - while converting the dv into appropriate format. Not sure this is happening anymore -
I don't seem to be getting feedback that indicates progress. I hear the drive cranking away, but it may just be rendering my theme motions, ad infinitum.
This is what I need clarified - does iDVD6 auto encode dv files to the appropriate format? The sizes when adding the *.dv files indicates that it is NOT compressing them as expected. Any ideas or comments?
Furthe complication: I have lost my chapter markers when I exported as *.dv - so I need to bring it into either iMovie6 or Final Cut Express2 (or iDVD6?) in order to add few, so that one can skip through the movies.
Was hoping to do this in iDVD, so I don't need multiple re-renders. (?)
I want to use the new themes in iDVD6 - that's the 2nd of my questions - can I make the theme 16:9 & the actual films as 4:3? (how they were shot).
Some of the "friendly" features of the newer version have confounded me a little. I am in the middle of a project, editing a few more small films – quickly maxing out on room, so its not conducive to involved experimentation.
Help!, Mr Wizard!!!
g5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I think I can answer some of these:
Saved out individual movies (3 to 12 min ea) as full quality *.dv to optimize space for the movie projects.
You will need to go back to iMovie to add chapter markers.
Was hoping to do this in iDVD, so I don't need multiple re-renders
Everthing is already rendered, so no re-renders will happen. After your original export, iMovie treat every fade, title, transition, etc., just like plain DV input, since it has already been rendered.
does iDVD6 auto encode dv files to the appropriate format
Yes, but you have to have your preferences set to "best performance" to do this. I usually use "best quality", where iDVD does NO encoding until you hit the burn button. If you want background encoding, then set your iDVD prefs to Best Performance.
To "see" the encoding status in iDVD6 (when set to best performance) look for "project info" under the project menu in iDVD 6.
can I make the theme 16:9 & the actual films as 4:3?
Sure but there are 4:3 settings for the new themes too....again look under the Project menu in iDVD.

  • What's the recommended import encoding for best 'practical' ipod use?

I just really found out that you can change the import encoding for different quality sound and such and I'm wondering what is the best or most practical quality setting for use on my IPOD? Also how about the best, period? It would be nice to have my favorite albums on my ITUNES in the best quality I can have them.
Most of my songs are AAC encoded, 128 kbps, 44.1khz, low-complexity, stereo.
A while ago I was messing around and changed preferences settings and so some music is encoded as MPEG-1 Layer 3, 160kbps, joint stereo, ID3-v2.2.
    How would you import?
    Thanks!

Meg has a good memory. I do rip in AAC@256 VBR. After experimenting around for about 2 years or so, I have found that this setting yields the best audio quality for my tastes. You have to keep in mind what kind of equipment you are using. If you are using Apple earbuds & internal computer speakers, then it's doubtful that you will be able to tell much difference. I use Shure SE310 earphones & Bose Companion 5 speakers with my computer, so I can most definitely tell lower audio quality files. The last thing to remember is that ripping at a higher bitrate or with a Lossless format will increase the size of your files & thus use more room on your iPod. My AAC@256 files are 2x the size of the same files ripped @128. This doesn't matter to me as I recently purchased a 160GB Classic a few months ago. Hope this helps.

  • What's the best format to import/encode with?

I must sound foolish but I just learned that my preferences for import encoding was set on mp3. I'm not sure how this has affected the sound quality of what I've been importing for the last couple of months but I think they're all mpeg-1 at 160kbps, 44.1khz. Before them, most all I see are AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1khz. Both are small file sizes, like 2-6mb average. This is about as much as an mp3. Have I been importing and encoding all of my music in inferior sound? My songs exported from Logic are in AIFF and their file sizes are in the 30mb range. What should I be importing/encoding in?

Have a look at this article, you'll get an extensive comparison of the AAC and MP3 formats and bit rates benchmarked against CD format: Planet of Sound - Quality of AAC audio and MP3
You could also make two copies of something you are familiar with in MP3 and AAC and have a listen for yourself. People will have different preferences so it's always best to go by your ears. Whatever your decision, it's always preferable to re-rip from the original uncompressed format rather than converting from one lossy format to another. In fact converting from one lossy format to another can result in even more quality loss. It's a bit like photocopying a photocopy, the farther you get away from the original the lower the quality.

aperture stuck importing photos, loading asset frozen

I found a sequence that has worked for me a couple of times, first with a managed library and also with a referenced library. Once you see in the Activity window that nothing is progressing, select the root Folder Import and hit Pause Task. This should pause everything. Now, go and try to Quit Aperture. This will send you a warning that you are Importing, etc. and give you either Quit or Continue. Select Continue.
Go back to the Activity window and select the root Folder Import and hit Run Task. It should be working again.

  • Not enough free disc space for encoding remaining assets

I get this message when I try to print my DVD   "not enough free disc space for encoding remaining assets"
Does this mean I have too much videos and material on the computer.  I have tried to delete several but it does not seem to be making any difference.  Please help/explain...  Thank you!
    I

IDVD is limited by the duration of your movie and nothing else.
A single layer DVD is good for about two hours.  A dual layer DVD is good for about three hours and 45 minutes.
You do need a certain amount of free space to create DVDs.
To burn your iDVD project to a single-layer DVD disc, you should have 8 to 10 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space on your hard disk, depending on the size of your project. For double-layer discs, you need 15 to 20 GB of free disk space. To check how much disk space you have, Control-click the hard disk icon on your desktop and choose Get Info. Then look next to Available to see how much space you have.
The encoded DVD files remain on your hard disk inside your project’s folder. If you do not want to save the encoded files after you burn your project to a disc, you can delete them.

Is there a way to import photos to the iPad and put in an album without having the photo also in the Camera Roll?  I have a photo transfer app but when I import the album and photos they are also shown in the CR.  When you delete them from CR they are deleted from the album too.

You can sync photos from your computer via iTunes, and each folder that you sync will get its own album : syncing photos. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next sync.
In terms of albums that you create directly on the iPad no, effectively you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you delete the original photo you will therefore also be deleting all pointers to it.
You could consider a third-party photo management app instead e.g. Photo Manager Pro

  • Importing photos from iphoto into idvd

I am trying to import photos from iphoto into idvd for a slideshow. When the photos move into idvd they are not in the same order as they were in the iphoto library. What could be the possible cause of this?? I did go into iphoto and place comments in after the fact. Would that have anything to do with it?

Try this possible solution from acgray on Mac OS X Hints:
I have worked with many users who like to take iPhoto albums and make DVDs of them with iDVD. However, one very annoying bug (feature?) has to do with the fact that when you are in iDVD, it randomizes the sort order of the Photos in your album. Not only that, but it is painstaking and time consuming changing the order in iDVD.
    My solution..
Select All in the album in iPhoto you want to use in iDVD as a slideshow. Then use File -> Export -> File Export. The secret is to select "Use Album Name" as this will rename the images in sequential order, based on the order that you put them in. Save them in their own new folder somehwere easy to find (ie on the Desktop).
Then, in iDVD, either drag, or I believe you can import the entire folder into the Slideshow project window, and voila! your slides are in order. I believe you can throw away the folder with the exported images as they should now be saved into the Project, but don't quote me on that.

  • Importing a movie (mov) into iDVD 16.9

I have been attempting to import a movie (mov) into iDVD. The movie is 16.9 aspect ratio and every time I import it into iDVD it defaults tp 4.3 even though I set it in the beginning within iDVD at 16.9.
    Can someone help me

    Hi
There are in two places You need to set 16x9
    • First when You Create a new project
    • Then under Project Info (top row menu)
This can jump back to 4x3 if You select to use such a theme - then just go up and change it back again
    SAVE AS A DISKIMAGE
Test this first - to see that all plays as You want it
    Then first burn Your DVD

  • Media Encoder Greater that 7.0 does not recongnise SD footage with correct pixel aspect ratio

    Hello,
I logged this bug with Adobe last year but even through the latest releases the bug still remains and is a real issue for anyone editing in SD via Premiere Pro CC.
Effectvely when you create a PAL sequence within Premiere Pro CC using SD 720x576 pixels (4:3) you have 2 options to export, either Queue or Export. If you export the footage directly from the PP application to MPEG2 SD then the resulting files are perfect, however if you use the queue option and send it to Media Encoder then the resulting files are incorrectly interpreted and the resulting file looks squashed. I suspect the Media Encoder is defaulting to Square pixels and not 1.09xx which is the default for PAL SD 4:3
The issue only started on Media Encoder version 7.1 but I also checked 7.2 and this still has the bug.
I can't believe this is not effecting a lot of people and its taking so long to resolve. Adobe at the time acknowledged the issue but did not provide a time scale to fix.
If anyone has any words of wisdom I would love to hear from you. Maybe I am missing a simple workaround ?? Which could be to just export and NOT queue, however because I use the batch function a lot this is not always viable.
    thanks
    Steve

    Hi Tom,
thanks for the quick response. I'll attach two screenshots -- one from PP and one from AME, both showing the same test chart, but distorted in AME.
    Basically the given parameters are:
    Sequence is D1/DV PAL, 720x576, PAR 1.0940, framerate 25
Export settings are: MXF OP1a, resolution + framerate same as sequence, IMX 50 PAL.
If you still require the preset file, I'll send that separately.
    all the best
    Daniel

  • I have the latest version IPAD.  In Garage Band I am trying to import karaoke songs purchased on itunes so that I can sing with them via garage band.  In Garage Band, when I try in import a song from Itunes, nothing comes up?  How do I do this...?

I have the latest version IPAD.  In Garage Band I am trying to import karaoke songs purchased on itunes so that I can sing with them via garage band.  In Garage Band, when I try in import a song from Itunes, nothing comes up?  How do I do this...?

Make sure you understand the difference between an Audio File and a GarageBand Project File (also known as GarageBand Song File)
The + sing in the My Songs page is for opening a GarageBand Project File, either a new one or one that is copied vie the iTunes File Sharing mechanism. If I understand you right, then you want to import an Audio File from your iTunes library in a GarageBand Project and not open an existing GarageBand Project.
To import an Audio File from your iTunes Library to an existing GarageBand Project.
Make sure you sync your iTunes Library (all songs or a selection) to your iPad. This is the standard procedure so you can listen to your iTunes Library on your iPad (this step has nothing to do with GarageBand yet)
Once you are in your GarageBand Project, tap the Loop Browser icon (the ribbon) to open the Loop Browser
The misleading part here is that this window can display three tabs, not only the Apple Loops. It also displays any synced audio file via the iTunes Fle Sharing (the tab is labeled "Audio Files) and also any songs that you have synced to yoyr iPad that I just described. This tab is now called "Music".
Look at the screenshot of my previous post. The Music tab provides the same browsing capabilities (Playlists, Artist, etc) as your iTunes.
Navigate to the Kareoke Song (audio file) and drag it onto a GarageBand audio track
I explain all those details and concepts in my GarageBand book
    Hope that helps

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

My iPad Mini with retina display suddenly will not connect to the Internet. It shows full wifi bars, yet no web pages will load. My Internet is working with all other apple devices in my house. The iPad also no longer works with celluar data. I'm not sure what has happened. It was working fine a few hours ago. I have tried resetting it, ive restarted my browser etc. I tried to erase all data from my Ipad but I can't do that because it needs to sign into my Apple ID and use the Internet!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

This has nothing to do with your pictures. As long as LR works, nothing happens. The CC app merely has lost an entry in the installer database. Would a reinstall fix it? Sure. Is it necessary? Not really (until the next version or update). So unless you have too much time to spend or something isn't working, I'm sure you can find more interesting things to do with your tiem.
