Importing entire folder and subfolder hierarchy?

I just bought Lightroom with the assumption that it could easily import my photos. I believe I made a bad assumption. I have thousands of photos scattered throughout hundreds of folders and subfolders consisting of hundreds of GIGS of pictures. It appears that lightroom does not have the ability to import all photos within all subfolders of a hierarchy. It seems as though I have to import photos one direcotory at a time. Please tell me I am missing something. I've read the help, and searched the knowledge base, but I can't find any way to import all photos at once.

Thank you for your responses. I found a forum reply somewhere that said I could click the "choose selected" button of the "import photos from disk" dialog after choosing the top level folder I wanted to import. That worked. Of course it took a few hours, but it worked.
BTW: My comment about scattered photos was not the best choice of words. Since the late 90's I've been saving all my digital photos in folders by year -> year-month -> day-event-name, but they grow fast and pictures of full moons may be in dozens of folders, so it just seemed scattered to me. Now I can have fun of keywording everything. :)

Can I import an entire folder and sub-folders at once?

I am fairly new to LR and have TONS of files in a main Photo folder on Vista. Some of these files have duplicate names, some were taken with very early gen digital camera as well as newer files with my 40D. But importing each folder and sub folder 1 at a time is going to take a million years. Here is basically what I want to do.
1) Import ALL pics (probably about 6-8 thousand) at once
2) Go through these photos and tag them as well as get rid of the obviously crappy pics that i will never do anything with, kill the dupes
3) Meta tag as many as i can
4) export to a new foler
All files are jpg. Nice memorial day project eh?

I would make some suggestions to your proposed workflow.
Instead of "3) Meta tag as many as i can", I would say assign keywords and captions on all of your photos. Keywords and captions are a very powerful way of organizing, and when well done, they make finding your photos extremely easy. I understand that this takes time and effort, but you will find that the time and effort you put into this pays off well.
If you leave some photos without keywords and captions, how will you find them? I know how ... you will search for 30 minutes and probably say some four-letter words in the process.
Instead of "4) export to a new foler[sic]", don't bother exporting as a regular part of your workflow. Just don't do it! Only export when you need the photos outside of Lightroom, such as for e-mail or uploading or printing at a commercial printer. Otherwise, there is no need for you to take up the disk space with thousands of exported .jpgs.

Error when importing entire folder with many logs

Hi,
I came across an error when trying to import an entire folder containing 118 logs (total size 63 MB), created by and imported to Signal Express 2012 (version 6.0.0).
After about 80 of them have been imported without problem the error, shown in the attached file, is displayed.
The remaining log files can be opened one by one after SE have been restarted so there are apparently no problems with the files.
My path to the folder containing the log files are 81 characters long. I also tried a shorter path with only 9 characters but it didn't help.
Seems like it's a bug in SE. Is there a workaround?

Hi JockeR,
The error message indicates that at least one TDMS file in your log folder was not generated by SignalExpress. SignalExpress 2012 can only import TDMS files generated by SignalExpress itself.
There is a utility on ni.com which can convert the non-SignalExpress TDMS into SignalExpress TDMS. Check it out here:

I have lost a folder with all of my future travel emails in it. Could I have deleted an entire folder and can I retrieve it?

I was trying to move an email into my travel folder and I couldn't find it. Then I searched for one of my hotel confirmations that was in that folder and there is no sign of it. Could I have deleted an entire folder? If so, can I retrieve it?

You might have moved it, but if search doesn't find it.....
Your travel folder is it on the server or on your pc?
If it's on the server and you use IMAP you might have lost the subscription
(right click on the account and subscribe)
If its in local folders: try open ''Troubleshooting information'' (under help)
click on button show folder and examine MAIL\Local Folders\ ..... for your missing travel -file. If its there make a copy (for safety) of the one without an extension. Dont do anything else without shutting down Tbird.
And when your at it, paste your ''Troubleshooting information'' (use ''copy to clipboard' -button) here.

When I perform a search, get a list of results and within this list I find the email I was after, HOW do I locate the message? In other words, how can I open the folder which contains that particular email?

Creation of folder and subfolder in library through web service

Hi,
Facing an issue in creating folder in library through SOAP service.
I'm sending a request to sharepoint site for creation of folder.The folder gets created in sharepoint but service returs error as "Error id=2, failed"
And when i'm trying to create subfolder under the above folder service throws an exception saying "FolderNotFound"
The same service is working on other env.

Today I've been working with some Share Point develompment but the truth is that I can't just get it.
Can any body help me with some easy links to start Share Point Development?
Here is wath I'm trying: I need to create a new folder (lets say Folder1) inside a Document library. After Folder1 is created, I need to create a new Folder inside Folder1 (lets say Folder1.1) and so on.
Until now, I'm able to create Folder1 but after that I don't know how to continue creating subfolders.
It's important to say that I would like to solve this problem by using webservices and let de Microsoft.Sharepoint.dll as just in case.

I have movie covers saved as a jpeg for every movie my family and I own. There is about 700 and they each have a comment of the main actors, release dates, and descriptions. This makes it easy to find what to watch.Is there an applescript, automator, program I can download, or program code supported in xcode that will do the following set of inscructions?
Take the name of the picture file and spotlight comment, copy and paste it to a movie file's comments to a file with the same name but obviously has different extention. For an example
In a Pictures folder
Name: Dark Knight, The.jpeg       Comment: (2008) Genre: Action...             <- copy comment
In a Movie Folder
Name: Dark Knight, The.m4v       Comment:                                               <- paste
and do this for all 700 files

Is there a simple way for an AIR app to download an entire
folder and it's contents from a web sever and copy it to the local

detect the contents of folders but nothing I can find on entire
folders.

contents of a folder on the web server (if you don't have an
index.html, some web servers by default serve a html page listing
all the contents) and download each one and also recurse when you
encounter another folder.

Hello All,
I want to put an entire folder (and it's contents) into memory.
Use Case :
1) Computer 1 has a folder called "foo" with 5 files in it. I want to run some program here which will serialize down into some file call it "fooserialized"
2) Computer 2 deserializes "fooserialized" and can then create folder "foo" with all of it's original contents.
Any suggestions? I browsed through the java.util.zip package with no avail.

Check your Import settings in the Import Panel, i.e. all that might exclude the image type you want to import:
If you did not exclude any file types, and still Aperture will not import, remove your ImageCapture preferences fro your user library:
To remove the image capture preferences:
If Aperture is running, quit Aperture, and log off and on again.
Open your user library from the Finder's Go menu: Hit Command Shift G (⌘⇧G) and then type in: ~/Library/Preferences/ then hit return.
In the window that opens remove "com.apple.ImageCapture.plist"
and look into the subfolder "ByHost": if there are files named com.apple.ImageCapture something .plist remove them too.
then try again.
And if that still does not help, remove the Aperture preferences as well:
~/Library/Preferences/aperture.plist

P.S. in MacOS Lion and later the user library ~/Library is hidden by default.
You can reveal it also from the Finder's "Go" menu:
Finder > Go, then hold down the options ⌥ key, until the Library appears in the drop-down menu, select it and open the Library folder. Then go to the "Preferences".

This is what that error means:

Download and launch BatChmod. Put the videos into a subfolder and drag that folder containing the video files into the Batchmod window. Make sure you are the owner and have R,W, X access as well as the group. Everyone will have R only.
Check the Change ownership and privileges, Unlock and Apply to enclosed boxes and then click on the Apply button. When done try importing the files again.
