Importing files too big

Whenever I try to import CDs the CD shows up as nearly 500 MB. I know that that is too much space, but I don't know how to fix it. What should I do?

I'm not sure what you mean. When you insert the CD and it appears in iTunes it's normal to have a total of several hundreds of MB for the files on the CD.
When the same amount shows up for the same files in iTunes, after importing, you probably imported them as AIFF or WAV.
You can change these settings in
b Preferences>Advanced>Importing
in
b Import Using:
A good start would be AAC Encoder High Quality (128kbps).
If you want MP3 at about the same quality choose MP3 Encoder High Quality (160 kbps)
The file sizes of the latter are somewhat larger.
Importing in AAC would reduce the total file size with about 90%

  • Is an 8.7GB file too big to import into iMovie 9?

Is an 8.7GB file too big to import into iMovie 9?  I am using iMovie 8.0.6 on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8 on 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB Memory.  I can't get my movie file to import into iMovie...any advice would be much appreciated!

When you import into iMovie, your video is converted into DV format. This uses 13 GB per hour of video. So the first thing you have to do is make sure you have 26 GB free on your hard drive, plus another 10GB free for OSX to perform, plus 10GB free if you plan on burning a DVD.
iMovie has non-destructive editing. If you have used any part of a clip and discard the rest, that entire clip is still saved in your project - unused but eating up disc space. If you use no part of a clip and discard the clip, then the clip can go in the trash and you get back disc space. So...
If you import 2 hours of video (26GB) as one clip, and only use 2 minutes, your 2-minute segment retains its 2-hr source in memory. 2 min = 26 GB.
One thing you can do is set the iMovie preferences to automatically create new clips every 3 minutes. (2 hours of 3-min clips = 40 clips.) This allows you to find the 2-minute segment you want and delete all of the unused clips. Say your 2-minute segment comes from 2 of these 3-min clips, so you keep 6 minutes of source footage and delete the rest. Clips that are entirely unused will be completely deleted and give you back disc space. At .65 GB per clip, your 6-minute project is now only 1.3 GB, and you've just regained 24.7 GB of disc space.

  • Published site won't load. Are my video files too big?

I'm a video editor and have published a site through iWeb. I have about 8 movie files on the site. The site never fully loads. Are my video files too big? If so, what would you recommend the average MB's should be?

You need to use a movie player that doesn't require the files to load with the webpage...

  • Backup file too big using Disk Utility

I need to back up my 160GB Mackintosh HD on my imac OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) using disk utility. After a short period of the imaging process I get a message saying 'file too big'. What can I do to resolve the problem? My external drive is 1TB with 500GB available.
I've tried using Time Machine but this seems to want to wipe my external disk.

You may or may not be able to use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to shrink the single partition and create a new one in the free space.

I have tried to export a sequence using Quicktime conversion. It is a two minute clip and I keep getting an "Error, File too big" message. Does anyone know what can be happening?

What exactly are you exporting to? Settings, codec, data rate? What drive are you exporting to? How is it formatted?

  • Import Message - Files Too Big

While doing my initial import, I got a message the end that about 8 of my 1000 or so photos were not imported because they were too big. I'm leaving the photos on my NAS drive (not moving them). What's the problem? Thanks in advance for any help.
    Steve

No files 10K pixels a side or larger will be imported regardless of Mb size.
    From Help: About file formats
    >TIFF format
    >Tagged-Image File Format (TIFF, TIF) is used to exchange files between applications and computer platforms. TIFF is a flexible bitmap image format supported by virtually all paint, image-editing, and page-layout applications. Also, virtually all desktop scanners can produce TIFF images. Lightroom supports large documents saved in TIFF format (up to 100 million pixels with pixel dimensions of no more than 10,000 on a side). However, most other applications, including older versions of Photoshop (pre-Photoshop CS), do not support documents with file sizes greater than 2 GB.

  • .mov file too big for posting on my website

i am using i-photo to create a slideshow. i've used photos that were 72 dpi on one slideshow and photos that were 300 dpi on another. i have about 55 photos on each slideshow. the 72 dpi slideshow is actually larger than the 300. what gives? i can't post either on my website for display. they are both too big (over 42mb). can anyone help me out on this and maybe give me some insight?
    thanks-
    i-Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi GinaP,
Yes, the 55 images equaling 42mb sounds right. What is the limitation that you have?
There might be 2 ways to reduce the total file size.
1: You may need to reduce the resolution (dimensions and file size) of each image. You can do this in iPhoto, select image, use the Share > Export, make sure you choose the 'Scale images no larger than: insert a smaller dimension that original. This will reduce resolution which in turn will reduce the file size. I would create a new folder on your desktop, name it appropriately and export into this folder. Afterwards, just take the folder and drop into iPhoto, will import and make your slideshow... BTW - you can batch export and resize
2: If you want to keep same image dimensions but need to reduce the file size, you will need to use export function again, but then you can open your images in PREVIEW, use the SAVE AS option, you will notice a 'Quality' slide, move this to the left to 'shrink' images... and again import and make your slide show.
It's alot of work, but I know of nothing else you can do to reduce file size w/o downloading another App...

  • Lightroom reports file too big

Problem with panos stitched with PTGui. Three D2X NEFs converted in Lightroom then opened in CS2, saved as TIF files and stitched to one 75MB image in PTGui are then reported by Lightroom to be too big to import. The resulting TIF file opens happily in Photoshop and other applications (ACDSee, Neat Image etc). It makes no difference if I then save it as JPEG (takes it down to 15MB), Lightroom still refuses to import. I have a feeling that this is not related to file size (15MB JPEG?)
    Anyone with a hint?
    Peter

Your are welcome Peter, I believe that it is only in recent times that PS moved to 30k pixels so we might have to wait until the other bugs/features are sorted out !!
    Enjoy LR !!

  • HDV preset disappear, always crash, file too big

I have several problem with premiere cs4 on my Mac Os x 10.5.8.
before unistall cs4 I'm trying to resolve the problems because I have a important project not exported yet and that I can't open anymore.
after found some plug in that make premiere crashing everytime and deleted them, now it opens but can't support anymore any file inside my project saying they're too big size! ( until last week it was working perfectly!)
now I just saw thet I don't have anymore the HDV preset , what's going on ?
shall I unistall it and start again?!
How can I open my project again with out lost anything??
    many thanks

You can try removing the preferences and see if that helps you.  user>documents>Adobe>Premiere Pro.  Take the 4.0 folder to your desktop and start Premiere Pro.  If that doesn't work, I would probably uninstall and reinstall just to be sure.
To uninstall on Mac go to the utilities folder and look at the ADobe Installers folder.  There you should be able to uninstall (yes, you even have to do it on a Mac!)
    Hope this helps,
    Dennis

  • Lightroom saying files too big

When importing a folder under LIBRARY I get a message telling me "The following files were not imported. The files are too big"
Anyone know what the size limit is or why I would get this error. The files are 7 of 50 all the same size.
    Peter

    > Lee Jay, how can we stop "whining" about it when it is so clearly a design flaw?
Because it's not an LR design-flaw, and the team is *fully* aware of the issue.
    > It is not acceptable in any way like it is.
Really? So, I guess the fact that I get tremendous use out of it right now is an illusion? ACR was developed for *RAW* files. It was extended to process non-RAW files *this year* - an extension that generated this issue. The next step is to extend the extension to handle large files. This was not an issue for RAW files since there aren't any cameras that can produce RAW images of this size.
    > An Lee Jay, even though you are satisified does not mean that LR in some ways totally lack the functionality that is needed. The fact that it is a 1.x product is not an excuse for anything.
Really? How'd you like Photoshop 1? DOS 1? Did you use Windows 1?
BTW, I'm not satisfied. I doubt I'll ever be satisfied. But it's absolutely the best 1.x product I've ever used, and it's getting better all the time. This is one edge-case that needs to be addressed. If you think I'm satisfied, you should see the 2-page single-spaced, one-per-line feature request list I submitted (which had this on it). Yet, what it doesn't have doesn't detract from what it does have, which is a powerful set of tools for *most* people to use on *most* of their images.
I use PTGui, Panorama Tools, Autopano, and enblend to produce my panos. I have quite a few, and every single one is over 10,000 pixels. For now, I've just created 7200 pixel versions for import into LR, and this lets me know the larger ones are available in the folder. Happily, I can just right-click on one and hit "show in explorer" to see the larger ones, and double-click those to edit them in PS. All of this is a very minor annoyance for handling large panos.

  • Music files too BIG! Pleas Help!

I'm probably just new with this iTunes program but for some reason my music files are insanly big. Files that should be 2 to 3MB are 20 to 30MB. I have checked the sample rate under importing preferences and it says automatic. What am I doing wrong and can I change the ones that are too big without reimporting.

Thank you for your suggestion however since I upgraded to the new iTunes software nothing has seemed to work correctly. I am currently using the software that came with my iPod which is the version previous but with all the problems from the new software. as you suggested I tried to change the format of my audio files. The formats the worked were MP3, WAV, and apple lossless. When I try it with the AIFF I get and Unknown error (-213) message. Unfortunatly thats the only format which will make my files smaller, the others only made them larger, 40MB for one song ouch. I believe my problem is stemming from the software upgrade, before I upgraded I could import music and the files were the correct size, I could import photos with out them coming up white blank pages on my iPod. Needless to say I am pretty frustrated. Also my iTunes won't even play the AIFF files any more (since I upgraded). I guess the thing that would help me the most is how could I restore my Itunes to the way it was before I upgraded software?
Everything worked "perfectly" then. I hope this gives an Idea of the problems I am having. Thank you for your time.

  • File Too Big to Open?

I have a ~26 MB CSV file, which I had wanted to open in Numbers 09. But when I did, Numbers displayed the Opening dialog box, and then said that the file can't be opened because it was too big. How can I work around this and open the CSV file?

CSV is a text file, so if it's a spreadsheet, it likely exceeds the 64K row limit for a Numbers table.
You might be able to open the file in TextEdit, then split it into smaller pieces which you will be able to open.
Or it may be possible to open the file using either NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org, both of which can be downloaded from their respective websites (linked to the names in this line).
Make a copy of the file to try these with.

  • Archived file too big for DVD

    Hello
I have created an archive file that looks to be 7.4 GB - obviously too big to fit on one DVD. Is there a way to put this file onto TWO DVD's, or do I have to try and make two files that are smaller in order to put them on DVD?
It doesn't look like the archive file is much smaller than the originals put together - there was an M4V (iPod movie - 163 MB), a disk image of the same (iDVD - 1.77 GB) and the original file from iMovie (6.6GB). I'm afraid that even if I split them up into two files, I won't be able to get the iMovie file onto one disk just by itself!
I really want them on a disk rather than an external hard drive - at the rate my son is making these movies, I'll have no space left really soon! Please help! Thanks.

"SuperDrive" is just Apple's term for their internal DVD writers. In the last couple of years, SuperDrives have been updated with DL-burning capability.
A "regular" single-layer DVD has around 4.7GB of capacity, which roughly translates to 90 minutes of video.
Commercial movie DVDs have long used the DL format, meaning that they can fit twice the length of video onto the disk. You will specifically need "DVD +R DL" disks to record this amount of data. Apple sells them, but you should also find them at good office stockists.
DVD players/readers can read both formats.

  • Keynote - files too big to email/share, looking for PDF resolution solution

Has anyone worked out how to change a keynote presentation PDF resolution when preparing for sharing? The file I get is too big to email (6 photos gave me 55mb) as it appears to retain the input resolution of the embedded photos?

If using Acrobat 9 Go To Document>Reduce File size.
If Using Acrobat X or XI to tot he tools sidebar and use Optimize for Web Distribution.
If you do not want to fool witht he pdf in any way then download Adobe Send Now app and use their free service or subscribe for a year for a whopping $29.95.
The free version allows you to upload files upt to 500MB there may be limitis to how many files you can upload it sends an e-mail to the parties you want to download the files and they simply follow the link and it downloads.
The paid version allows you to upload files as large as 2 GB and gives you 20GB of storage. I immediately myself purchased the paid version.
If you hppen to upgrade to the cloud then you get the paid version free.

  • Flv files too big?

i have three video files on my website. each is 1 minute long
and each is just under 5 megs big. is this an acceptable size for
the videos or are they still too big and require further
compression? what is considered acceptable? i am finding that when
they play they play fine (streaming from my website) however they
are not reliable in actually starting. sometimes it takes 2 or 3
clicks before they start to stream. i am not sure why this is
happening. i thought it could be related to the file size
    thanks !
    angus

I don't understand why so much detail on my process is needed. It's just a file conversion to view a movie I downloaded. I do have FCE and work in it, but not in this case. It just seemed that most Streamclip discussions were in this thread area, so I came here. Anyway, thank you. I will try what you suggest, but I do think it's a useful feature for these programs to clearly show, when possible, final converted file sizes based on what parameters have been chosen. For example, the newest Quicktime photo conversion window features a slider that allows you to SELECT the file size for .jpg. I always needed something like this and was delighted to see it appear in the new version. It's the great thing about Apple - user-friendliness.
