Importing Flip .avi clips from hard drive

I got a Flip camcorder (standard def) for christmas last year and have copied all of its footage onto my Mac hard drive from an external PC hard drive. After having downloaded the proper DIVX software, I can play back the clips in Quicktime without a problem. In iMovie, however, I really can't figure out what's wrong. I just downloaded the latest update of MacOSX and the latest updates to iMovie.
When I go into the import dialogue box, I can select (and preview-play) the .avi files I copied over, (set the import to copy instead of move), and the program goes through all the steps of importing the video, asks to generate thumbnails, the whole nine yards. Once it's done though, none of the clips show up in the event library. All the event library window says is "no matching video." The show function is set to "all clips." The only other thing I can see is in the left side of the events library, there's a hard disk icon with an exclamation point in a yellow inverted triangle labeled "imovie8.0.6" so something's not right...I just don't know what or how to fix it.

Update: I just tried importing again, and the videos are not playing back properly in the import window, only the sound track plays whilst the video remains frozen on the first frame.

Importig Clips from Hard Drive Cameras

iMovie HD imports *.mod clips (provided there are not too many) very rapidly from Hard Drive camcorders. It creates a series of event folders, one for each day! These event files are *.dv and can be imported by iMovie HD 6 and FC Express. Why can't Apple update FC Express and iMovie 6 so we could bring our clips right into those programs without going through iMovie 8 or another third party conversion to dv if we want to do real video editing?

Instead of renaming them manually you can use a program such as namemangler: http://www.manytricks.com/namemangler/ to change the names at a batch

Importing photos into iPhoto from Hard Drive

Mike just downloaded our back up onto our newish Mac after our Macbook bravely went to it's grave in coffee. I'm now trying to import about 100 - 200G of photos into iPhoto from my hard drive. I really do not want to spend the whole time selecting and dragging these pictures. All that I read so far says that is the only way to get them off your hard drive. Some one please rescue me and tell me there is another way! Unfortunately I have already started a new photo album with pictures from my iPhone, so I can't just start a new album with these pics. first off do not import an old library into iPhoto - it does not work
If you have an old library you simply drag it to the new computer and launch iPhoto while depressing the option key to get the select library window and then select it - repeat to select a different library
If you have just the photos (not =an iPhoto library) then simply drag the folder of photos to iPhoto

11.1.3 crashes when importing an mp3 file from hard drive

When I try to 'add file' from my hard drive to iTunes 11.1.3 the program crashes. The file is not added. Until updating to 11.1.3 I could add one or more files with no problem. Windows 7.
Is this a glitch in the update or specific to my machine and how could I tell?

Importing .dv clips from hard drive -- clips imported in random order

I use Firewire DTE drives with my camera when filming. Previously I could connect the drives to my computer via firewire and then import the clips into iMovie HD and the clips would go into the clip sorter in chronological order.
As of about two weeks ago my clips have started showing up in the clip sorter in completely random order. My projects are typically about 400 clips, so going through and getting them in order takes forever.
Any ideas?

Trouble importing from Hard Drive

So I downloaded my mini DV camcorder tape to my hard drive thinking that I would edit and make a movie later. I think I should have originally archived from my camcorder to my hard drive. I am now having difficulty importing from my hard drive as all my clips have been separated by days. What is the best way to import from my hard drive to iMovie so that it will create thumbnails, etc? I hope this makes sense.

You should be able to open iMovie with the hard drive attached, and you should be good to go. The thumbnails would have been generated when you imported the DV to your hard drive (assuming you used iMovie for the import).
iMovie will automatically split clips into days much like iPhoto creates Events. You can rename these in imovie so they have a meaningful name to you. You can all merge events if necessary, for example if a whole weekend is all the same thing, you could merge it into a single event rather than three separate days. You do this by dragging and dropping within iMovie.

What exactly did you do?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

Colour differences & LR not deleting from hard drive

I am running a Dell Dimension 1100, a NEC MultiSync 70 monitor, Xp SP 2 home, Olympus Master 2 and a full version of Lightroom 1.0,Photoshop CS2, and use a Olympus E-500 DSLR.
I have a slight issue with how Lightroom shows the colours of my pictures when i am comparing Olympus Master 2 v. Lightroom 1.0. Most pictures its hard to tell the difference without going back and forth constantly, but when i look at my pictures of flowers or landscapes, my pictures look so much more vibrant in Olympus Master compared to Lightroom. Is this a settings issue? or perhaps something else?

when deleting pictures from Lightroom, it asks me if i wish to delete from the hard drive or just remove from Lightroom, when i choose delete from hard drive, after it says its done, if i go look at the folder its still there :/.
any help would be apprieciated, I am a novice dslr user and still learning how to use the softwares out there

Are you shooting images in raw or jpeg mode?
I assume that Olympus Master 2 is the raw processing software bundled with your camera. If so, then you are asking why Olympus software renders pictures differently than Lr. This question has been asked (and answered) many times but it boils down to the fact that the Olympus default rendering could be far different than that chosen by Lr. Also, Olympus may embed proprietary information in the raw image useful to Master 2 but entirely unknown to Lr.
If you want Lr to operate more like Master 2, then create a Lr preset (with the appropriate adjustments -- likely a saturation boost), then apply this preset when importing.
Finally, the camera raw engine (ACR) used by Lr is noted for producing images more muted than that produced by software bundled with cameras. In my opinion this is a good thing since the default rendering that many cameras produce is not at all natural. But the powerful Lr develop module allows me to create any interpretation I choose. Including a head spinning contrast and saturation boost.

How do I import a dvd to my hard drive on my g4 powerbook so I can import it to my ipod nano for viewing? My operating system is osx 10.3.9

I don't believe iPod Nanos can display video. If you are asking about importing music then you use iTunes to import from music DVDs. iTunes will convert the imported files to mp3s. After import you can then sync your iPod Nano and iTunes will automatically download to the iPod.
You should find this explained in both iTunes Help (Help menu of iTunes) and the user guide for your iPod Nano.

I have just set up a new iTunes account for my mum on her new windows laptop it doesn't have a cd burner so have copied some of her CDs onto a external hard drive however having trouble transferring music from hard drive into iTunes any suggestions?

I was instructed to reset my notebook to repair fingerprint device.
Thought I had backup of data on external hard drive, but not.

How to install arch 2009.08 from hard drive? Please enlighten me

OK, I admit I am impatient for the installation from the CD drive. Whenever possible and whatever distro I wanna try, I head first to try to install it from the hard drive. I don't remember how many times and how many distros I have done the same to, ubuntu, zenwalk, sidux, fedora, opensuse and of course arch. It rarely failed as long as I followed someone's guide, sth like "install any OS from hard drive", I do not exactly remember. And I did the same in the past with arch. But after 2009.08, it simply didn't work. I've read the article "fast install arch from existing linux system" in the wiki, it didn't work either (by the way, if someone can solve my problem, I think the article should be updated). After it boots, at some stage, it says "Use Hook [archiso]", then tell me "waiting for /dev/archiso for 30 seconds ..." then when the time due, it throws me into a ramfs shell. I've hacked for a long time, but no luck. Then I went back to download the 2009.02 iso, however, it works flawlessly.
I did find some differences in the menu.lst/isolinux.cfg between two version.
In 2009.02, we have
title Boot Arch Linux Live CD
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 lang=en locale=en_US.UTF-8 usbdelay=5 ramdisk_size=75%
initrd /boot/archiso_pata.img
While in 2009.08, it is
title Boot Arch Linux Live CD

I know I can install arch from usb, but I simply wanna know what's wrong here, so guys, if you have any idea, don't hesitate to enlighten me.

Hi, vacant, thanks for the reply. I did not notice you are the author of the article. Actually I missed the head of the article which directs me to another (the amalgamated one you mentioned). I take a look at it, it seems to make things complicated. I still miss the old days: you simply download the iso, mount it and copy all the contents into a separate partition, edit your current grub, then reboot and everything works. I don't understand how Arch could be so evolved to exclude this simple installation scheme. I am not complaining the development of Arch. In my opinion, a distro as flexible as Arch should provide as much installation strategy as possible. In this respect, I think we can learn from Ubuntu or sidux (in sidux, it provides a very convenient kernel parameter called "fromiso" which allows you to install sidux from the plain iso, that means, you even don't have to mount it and copy the contents out of it to a separate partition).

Deleting from library does not delete from hard drive????

itunes support states when deleting from library, it should prompt to remove from hard drive. i am not getting this prompt. i cannot find a setting that changes this either. please advise

It only deletes it from the hard drive if it is in the iTunes Music folder path;
Look at your itunes menu > Edit > Preferences >Advanced tab.
"itunes music folder location"
For example, say it is set to C:/Music. If you delete a file from the itunes library list that exists in C:/Music you'll get asked if you want to keep or delete the file.
If you delete a file from the itunes library lists that exists in C:/SomeOtherFolder, it will not get deleted from the hard drive.
